As a Near-IR instrument to PRL's upcoming 2.5 m telescope, NISP is designed indigeniously at PRL to serve as a multifaceted instrument. Optical, Mechanical and Electronics subsystems are being designed and developed in-house at PRL. It will consist of imaging, spectroscopy and imaging-polarimetry mode in the wavelength bands Y, J, H, Ks i.e. 0.8 - 2.5 micron. The detector is an 2K x 2K H2RG (MCT) array detector from Teledyne, which will give a large FOV of 10' x 10' in the imaging mode. Spectroscopic modes with resolving power of R ~ 3000, will be achieved using grisms. Spectroscopy will be available in single order and a cross-dispersed mode shall be planned for simultaneous spectra. The instrument enables multi-wavelength imaging-polarimetry using Wedged-Double Wollaston (WeDoWo) prisms to get single shot Stokes parameters (I, Q, U) for linear polarisation simultaneously, thus increasing the efficiency of polarisation measurements and reducing observation time.
NISP, a multifaceted near-infrared instrument for the upcoming 2.5m IR telescope at MIRO Gurushikhar, Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India is being developed at PRL, Ahmedabad. NISP will have wide (FOV = 10' x 10') field imaging, moderate (R=3000) spectroscopy and imaging polarimetry operating modes. It is designed based on 0.8 to 2.5 micron sensitive, 2048 X 2048 HgCdTe (MCT) array detector from Teledyne. Optical, Mechanical and Electronics subsystems are being designed and developed in-house at PRL. HAWAII-2RG (H2RG) detector will be mounted along with controlling SIDECAR ASIC inside LN2 filled cryog…

NISP is designed to work in the Near-IR (0.8-2.5 micron) using a H2RG detector. Collimator and camera lenses would transfer the image from the focal plane of the telescope to the detector plane. The entire optics, mechanical support structures, detector-SIDECAR assembly will be cooled to cryo-temperatures using an open cycle Liquid Nitrogen tank inside a vacuum De…
We report the design concept and performance of a compact, light-weight, and economic imaging polarimeter, TRIPOL (the Triple Range Imager and POLarimeter), capable of simultaneous optical imagery and polarimetry. TRIPOL splits the beam from wavelength 400 to 830 nm into g'-, r'-, and i'-bands with two dichroic mirrors, and measures polarization with an achromatic half-waveplate and a wire-grid. The simultaneity makes TRIPOL a useful tool for small telescopes for photometry and polarimetry of time variable and wavelength dependent phenomena. TRIPOL is devised for a Cassegrain telescope of an a…
The Sun is the nearest astrophysical source with a very intense emission in the X-ray band. The study of energetic events, such as solar flares, can help us to understand the behaviour of the magnetic field of our star. There are in the literature numerous studies published about polarization predictions, for a wide range of solar flares models involving the emission from thermal and/or non-thermal processes, but observations in the X-ray band have never been exhaustive. The gas pixel detector (GPD) was designed to achieve X-ray polarimetric measurements as well as X-ray images for far astroph…
Euclid Near Infrared Spectro-Photometer: spatial considerations on H2RG detectors interpixel capacitance and IPC corrected conversion gain from on-ground characterization
Astrophysical polarization measurements in the soft gamma-ray band are becoming more feasible as detectors with high position and energy resolution are deployed. Previous work has shown that the minimum detectable polarization (MDP) of an ideal Compton polarimeter can be improved by $\sim 21\%$ when an unbinned, maximum likelihood method is used instead of the standard approach of fitting a sinusoid to a histogram of azimuthal scattering angles. Here we outline a procedure for implementing this maximum likelihood approach for real, non-ideal polarimeters. As an example, we use the recent obser…
Euclid-VIS is a large format visible imager for the ESA Euclid space mission in their Cosmic Vision program, scheduled for launch in 2019. Together with the near infrared imaging within the NISP instrument it forms the basis of the weak lensing measurements of Euclid. VIS will image in a single r+i+z band from 550-900 nm over a field of view of ~0.5 deg2. By combining 4 exposures with a total of 2240 sec, VIS will reach to V=24.5 (10σ) for sources with extent ~0.3 arcsec. The image sampling is 0.1 arcsec. VIS will provide deep imaging with a tightly controlled and stable point spread function …
The Gamma-Ray Imager/Polarimeter for Solar flares (GRIPS) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to study solar-flare particle acceleration and transport. We describe GRIPS's first Antarctic long-duration flight in Jan 2016 and report preliminary calibration and science results. Electron and ion dynamics, particle abundances and the ambient plasma conditions in solar flares can be understood by examining hard X-ray (HXR) and gamma-ray emission (20 keV to 10 MeV) with enhanced imaging, spectroscopy and polarimetry. GRIPS is specifically designed to answer questions including: What causes the spa…

Together with the near infrared imaging within the NISP instrument, it forms the basis of the weak lensing measurements of Euclid. VIS will image in a single r+i+z band from 550-900 nm over a field of view of ~0.5 deg2. By combining 4 exposures with a total of 2260 sec, VIS will reach to deeper than mAB=24.5 (10sigma) for sources with extent ~0.3 arcsec. The image sampling is 0.1 arcsec. VIS will provide deep imaging with a tightly controlled and stable p…
The AstroSat satellite is designed to make multi-waveband observations of astronomical sources and the Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager (CZTI) instrument of AstroSat covers the hard X-ray band. CZTI has a large area position sensitive hard X-ray detector equipped with a Coded Aperture Mask, thus enabling simultaneous background measurement. Ability to record simultaneous detection of ionizing interactions in multiple detector elements is a special feature of the instrument and this is exploited to provide polarization information in the 100 - 380 keV region. CZTI provides sensitive spectroscopic …
Multi-Application Solar Telescope (MAST) is a 50 cm off-axis Gregorian telescope and started operational recently at Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO). For understanding the evolution and dynamics of solar magnetic and velocity fields, an imaging spectropolarimeter is being developed as one of the back-end instruments of MAST. This system consists of a narrow-band filter and a polarimeter. Polarimeter includes a linear polarizer and two sets of Liquid Crystal Variable Retarders (LCVRs). The instrument is intended for the simultaneous observations in the spectral lines 617.3 nm and 854.2 nm, whic…
We present a novel X-ray assembly of functionally related instrument blocks intended to measure solar flare and active region (AR) spectra from within the Russian instrument complex KORTES, to be mounted aboard the International Space Station (ISS). SolpeX consists of three blocks: fast-rotating multiple flat crystal Bragg spectrometer, pin-hole X-ray spectral imager and Bragg polarimeter. This combination of measuring blocks will offer an opportunity to detect/measure possible X-ray polarization in soft X-ray emission lines/continuum and record spectra of solar flares, in particular during th…
The Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is a balloon-borne, soft-gamma ray imager, spectrometer, and polarimeter with sensitivity from 0.2 to 5 MeV. Utilizing a compact Compton telescope design with twelve cross-strip, high-purity germanium detectors, COSI has three main science goals: study the 511 keV positron annihilation line from the Galactic plane, image diffuse emission from stellar nuclear lines, and perform polarization studies of gamma-ray bursts and other extreme astrophysical environments. COSI has just completed a successful 46-day flight on NASA's new Super Pressure Balloon, l…
We describe the Zurich Imaging Polarimeter (ZIMPOL), the visual focal plane subsystem of the SPHERE "VLT planet finder", which pushes the limits of current AO systems to shorter wavelengths, higher spatial resolution, and much improved polarimetric performance. We provide new benchmarks for the performance of high contrast instruments, in particular for polarimetric differential imaging. We have analyzed SPHERE/ZIMPOL point spread functions and measure the peak surface brightness, the encircled energy, and the full width half maximum (FWHM) for different wavelengths, atmospheric conditions, st…

The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) has as its science instrument an infrared integral field spectrograph/polarimeter (IFS). Integral field spectrographs are scientificially powerful but require sophisticated data reduction systems. For GPI to achieve its scientific goals of exoplanet and disk characterization, IFS data must be reconstructed into high quality astrometrically and photometrically accurate datacubes in both spectral and polarization modes, via flexible software that is usable by the broad Gemini community. The data reduction pipeline developed by the GPI instrument team to meet these …
The Canarias InfraRed Camera Experiment (CIRCE) is a near-infrared (1-2.5 micron) imager, polarimeter and low-resolution spectrograph operating as a visitor instrument for the Gran Telescopio Canarias 10.4-meter telescope. It was designed and built largely by graduate students and postdocs, with help from the UF astronomy engineering group, and is funded by the University of Florida and the U.S. National Science Foundation. CIRCE is intended to help fill the gap in near-infrared capabilities prior to the arrival of EMIR to the GTC, and will also provide the following scientific capabilities to…
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph Instrument is a high-contrast imager, polarimeter, and spectrometer that will enable the study of exoplanets and circumstellar disks at visible wavelengths ($\sim$550--850~nm) at contrasts 2--3 orders of magnitude better than can currently be achieved by ground or space-based direct imaging facilities. To capitalize on this sensitivity, precise flux calibration will be required. The Roman Coronagraph, like other space-based missions, will use on-orbit flatfields to measure and correct for phenomena that impact the measured total effective throu…
