The effect of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback on the host galaxy, and its role in quenching or enhancing star-formation, is still uncertain due to the fact that usual star-formation rate (SFR) indicators -- emission-line luminosities based on the assumption of photoionisation by young stars -- cannot be used for active galaxies as the ionising source is the AGN. We thus investigate the use of SFR derived from the stellar population and its relation with that derived from the gas for a sample of 170 AGN hosts and a matched control sample of 291 galaxies. We compare the values of SFR densities obtained via the Ha emission line (SFRg) for regions ionised by hot stars according to diagnostic diagrams with those obtained from stellar population synthesis (SFRstars) over the last 1 to 100~Myr. We find that the SFRstars over the last 20~Myrs closely reproduces the SFRg, although a better match is obtained via the transformation: log(SFRstars) = (0.870+/-0.004) log(SFRg) +(0.007+/-0.006), which is valid for both AGN hosts and non-active galaxies. We also compare the reddening obtained via the gas Ha/Hb ratio with that derived via the full spectral fitting in the stellar population synthesis. We find that the ratio between the gas and stellar extinction is in the range 2.64 < A_Vgas/A_Vstar} < 2.85, in approximate agreement with previous results from the literature, obtained for smaller samples. We interpret the difference as being due to the fact that the reddening of the stars is dominated by that affecting the less obscured underlying older population, while the reddening of the gas is larger as it is associated to a younger stellar population buried deeper in the dust.
Using artificial neural network (ANN) predictions of total infra-red luminosities (LIR), we compare the host galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) of ~21,000 optically selected active galactic nuclei (AGN), 466 low excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) and 721 mid-IR selected AGN. SFR offsets (Delta SFR) relative to a sample of star-forming `main sequence' galaxies (matched in M*, z and local environment) are computed for the AGN hosts. Optically selected AGN exhibit a wide range of Delta SFR, with a distribution skewed to low SFRs and a median Delta SFR = -0.06 dex. The LERGs have SFRs that are shif…
The unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) proposes that different AGN optical spectral types are caused by different viewing angles with respect to an obscuring 'torus'. Therefore, this model predicts that type 1 and type 2 AGNs should have similar host-galaxy properties. We investigate this prediction with 2463 X-ray selected AGNs in the COSMOS field. We divide our sample into type 1 and type 2 AGNs based on their spectra, morphologies, and variability. We derive their host-galaxy stellar masses ($M_\star$) through SED fitting, and find that the host $M_\star$ of type 1 AGNs tend to …
We present deep Near-infrared (NIR) images of a sample of 19 intermediate-redshift ($0.3<z<1.0$) radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) with powerful relativistic jets ($L_{1.4GHz} >10^{27}$ WHz$^{-1}$), previously classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars. We also compile host galaxy and nuclear magnitudes for blazars from literature. The combined sample (this work and compilation) contains 100 radio-loud AGN with host galaxy detections and a broad range of radio luminosities $L_{1.4GHz} \sim 10^{23.7} - 10^{28.3}$~WHz$^{-1}$, allowing us to divide our sample into high-luminosity blazars (HL…
Mid-Infrared Outbursts in Nearby Galaxies: Nuclear Obscuration and Connections to Hidden Tidal Disruption Events and Changing-Look Active Galactic Nuclei
We present detailed image analysis of rest-frame optical images of 235 low-redshift ($z \leq$ 0.35) type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. The high-resolution images enable us to perform rigorous two-dimensional image modeling to decouple the luminous central point source from the host galaxy, which, when warranted, is further decomposed into its principal structural components (bulge, bar, and disk). In many cases, care must be taken to account for structural complexities such as spiral arms, tidal features, and overlapping or interacting companion gala…
Partially obscured AGNs within a redshift range $z=0.011\sim0.256$ are used to re-study the role of feedback in the AGN-host coevolution issue in terms of their [OIII]$λ$5007 emission line profile. The spectra of these objects enable us to determine the AGN's accretion properties directly from their broad H$α$ emission. This is essential for getting rid of the "circular reasoning" in our previous study of narrow emission-line galaxies, in which the [OIII] emission line was used not only as a proxy of AGN's bolometric luminosity, but also as a diagnostic of outflow. In addition, the measurement…
Nucleation is a common phenomenon in all types of galaxies and at least 70% of them host nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in their centres. Many of the NSCs co-habit with super-massive black holes and follow similar scaling relations with host galaxy properties. NSCs, unlike black holes, preserve the signature of their evolutionary path imprinted onto their kinematics and stellar populations. Thus their study provides us with important information about the formation of galactic nuclei. In this paper we explored the angular momentum of the nuclei of six intermediate mass (9.7 > log(Mdyn/M_sun) > 1…
Context. The formation and evolution of galaxies appear linked to the growth of supermassive black holes, as evidenced by empirical scaling relations in nearby galaxies. Understanding this co-evolution over cosmic time requires the revelation of the dynamical state of galaxies and the measurement of the mass of their central black holes (MBH) at a range of cosmic distances. Bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are ideal for this purpose. Aims. The High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph (HARMONI), the first light integral-field spectrograph for …
We explore host galaxy properties and environment of a sample of Type 1 and 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) taken from the COSMOS2015 catalog, within 0.3 $\leq z \leq$ 1.1 selected for their emission in X-rays, optical spectra and SED signatures. We find different properties of host galaxies of distinct AGNs: Type 1 AGNs reside in blue, star-forming and less massive host galaxies compared to Type 2. The majority of the AGNs have intermediate X-ray luminosities, $10^{42}\leq L_X<10^{44}$ \ergs, while only a few have X-ray luminosities ($L_X > 10^{44}$ \ergs) as those observed in QSOs. Non-parame…
Our understanding of the cosmic evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) has been revolutionized by the advent of large multiwavelength extragalactic surveys, which have enabled detailed statistical studies of the host galaxies and large-scale structures of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We give an overview of some recent results on SMBH evolution, including the connection between AGN activity and star formation in galaxies, the role of galaxy mergers in fueling AGN activity, the nature of luminous obscured AGN, and the connection between AGN and their host dark matter halos. We conclude b…
Aims. The main purpose of this study is to investigate aspects regarding the validity of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) unification paradigm (UP). In particular, we focus on the AGN host galaxies, which according to the UP should show no systematic differences depending on the AGN classification. Methods. For the purpose of this study, we used (a) the spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release (DR) 14 catalogue, in order to select and classify AGNs using emission line diagnostics, up to a redshift of z=0.2, and (b) the Galaxy Zoo Project catalogue, which classifies SDSS galaxi…

It has been suggested that ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies are the "threshed'" remains of larger galaxies. Simulations have revealed that extensive tidal-stripping may pare a galaxy back to its tightly-bound, compact nuclear star cluster. It has therefore been proposed that the two-component nature of UCD galaxies may reflect the original nuclear star cluster surrounded by the paltry remnants of its host galaxy. A simple quantitative test of this theory is devised and applied here. If the mass of the central black hole in UCD galaxies, relative to the mass of the UCD galaxies' inner stellar…
The growth of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies are thought to be linked, but the precise nature of this symbiotic relationship is still poorly understood. Both observations and simulations of galaxy formation suggest that the energy input from active galactic nuclei (AGN), as the central supermassive black hole accretes material and grows, heats the interstellar material and suppresses star formation. In this Letter, we show that most host galaxies of moderate-luminosity supermassive black holes in the local universe have intermediate optical colors that imply the host galaxies…
We present the star formation rate (SFR) measurements based on the spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis with new sub-mm fluxes combined with archival multi-wavelength data for a sample of 52 AGN host galaxies at z $<0.2$. We carried out sub-mm observations using the SCUBA-2 camera at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and obtained flux or an upper limit at 450 and 850 $μ$m for each target. By experimenting the effect of the AGN dust component in the SED fit, we find that dust luminosity can be overestimated if AGN contribution is ignored. While the SFR based on 4000Å break shows a signi…

We present a new relationship between central black hole (BH) mass and host galaxy stellar bulge mass extending to the lowest BH masses known in dwarf galaxies ($M_{\rm BH} \lesssim 10^{5} M_{\odot}$; $M_{\star} \sim 10^{9} M_{\odot}$). We have obtained visible and near-infrared $Hubble \ Space \ Telescope \ (HST)$ imaging of seven dwarf galaxies with optically-selected broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) and BH mass estimates from single epoch spectroscopy. We perform 2D photometric modeling with GALFIT to decompose the structure of these galaxies and find that the majority have an inner …
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are axisymmetric systems to first order; their observed properties are likely strong functions of inclination with respect to our line of sight, yet the specific inclinations of all but a few AGN are generally unknown. By determining the inclinations and geometries of nearby Seyfert galaxies using the kinematics of their narrow-line regions (NLRs), and comparing them with observed properties, we find strong correlations between inclination and total hydrogen column density, infrared color, and H-beta full-width at half maximum (FWHM). These correlations provide evi…
We report the multi-wavelength properties of millimeter galaxies hosting X-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS). ALCS is an extensive survey of well-studied lensing clusters with ALMA, covering an area of 133 arcmin$^2$ over 33 clusters with a 1.2 mm flux-density limit of ${\sim}$60 $\mathrm{μJy}$ ($1σ$). Utilizing the archival data of Chandra, we identify three AGNs at $z=$1.06, 2.09, and 2.84 among the 180 millimeter sources securely detected in the ALCS (of which 155 are inside the coverage of Chandra). The X-ray spectral analysis shows that…
Major galaxy mergers can trigger nuclear activities and are responsible for high-luminosity quasi-stellar objects /active galactic nuclei (QSOs/AGNs). In certain circumstances, such mergers may cause dual active galactic nuclei (dAGN) phenomenon. This study investigates dAGN triggering and evolution of massive black holes (MBHs) during the merging processes using hydrodynamic code GADGET-2 to simulate several gas-rich major mergers at redshift $z=2$ and $3$, respectively. Results reveal that gas-rich major mergers can trigger significant nuclear activities after the second and third pericentri…

We present the latest results of a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, "New Numerical Galaxy Catalogue", which is combined with large cosmological N-body simulations. This model can reproduce statistical properties of galaxies at z < 6.0. We focus on the properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and supermassive black holes, especially on the accretion timescale onto black holes. We find that the number density of AGNs at z < 1.5 and at hard X-ray luminosity 10^{ 44 }< erg/s is underestimated compared with recent observational estimates when we assume the exponentially decreasing accret…

X-ray emission detection in a galaxy is one of the efficient tools for selecting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). However, many X-ray-selected AGNs are not easily selected as AGNs by their optical emission. These galaxies, so-called optically dull (OD) AGNs, are fascinating since their X-ray emission is bright even though the AGN signature in the optical regime is absent. In a deep multiwavelength survey over 2 deg$^2$ of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field, we have looked for the OD AGNs using photometric, spectroscopic, and X-ray data. We identified 310 non-broad line sources with optic…
We analyse different photometric and spectroscopic properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars (QSOs) selected by their mid-IR power-law and X-ray emission from the COSMOS survey. We use a set of star-forming galaxies as a control sample to compare with the results. We have considered samples of obscured (HR > -0.2) and unobscured (HR < -0.2) sources including AGNs with $L_X$ < $10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, as well as QSOs ($L_X$ > $10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) with 1.4 < z < 2.5. We also study the typical environment of these samples, by assessing neighbouring galaxy number density and neighb…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are thought to play a critical role in shaping galaxies, but their effect on the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is not well studied. We present results from the COS-AGN survey: 19 quasar sightlines that probe the CGM of 20 optically-selected AGN host galaxies with impact parameters $80 < ρ_{imp} < 300$ kpc. Absorption lines from a variety of species are measured and compared to a stellar mass and impact parameter matched sample of sightlines through non-AGN galaxies. Amongst the observed species in the COS-AGN sample (HI, CII, SiII, SiIII, CIV, SiIV, NV), only Ly$α$ s…
We discuss the environment of local hard X-ray selected active galaxies, with reference to two independent group catalogues. We find that the fraction of these AGN in S0 host galaxies decreases strongly as a function of galaxy group size (halo mass) - which contrasts with the increasing fraction of galaxies of S0 type in denser environments. However, there is no evidence for an environmental dependence of AGN in spiral galaxies. Because most AGN are found in spiral galaxies, this dilutes the signature of environmental dependence for the population as a whole. We argue that the differing result…
We present an analysis of 39 nuclei and their early-type hosts in the Virgo Cluster using ten broadband filters: F300W, F475W, F850LP, F160W, $u^*griz$, and $K_s$. We describe the Virgo Redux program, which provides high-resolution UV and NIR imaging. Combining this data with optical and NIR imaging from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey and the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey, we estimate masses, metallicities and ages using simple stellar population (SSP) models. For 19 nuclei, we compare to SSP parameters derived from Keck and Gemini spectra and find reasonable agreement between the photome…
We use Herschel data to analyze the size of the far-infrared 70micron emission for z<0.06 local samples of 277 hosts of Swift-BAT selected active galactic nuclei (AGN), and 515 comparison galaxies that are not detected by BAT. For modest far-infrared luminosities 8.5<log(LFIR)<10.5, we find large scatter of half light radii Re70 for both populations, but a typical Re70 <~ 1 kpc for the BAT hosts that is only half that of comparison galaxies of same far-infrared luminosity. The result mostly reflects a more compact distribution of star formation (and hence gas) in the AGN hosts, but compact AGN…
Post-starburst (PSB) galaxies may be in rapid transition from star-forming to quiescence and are excellent candidates to constrain active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback models. We study galactic winds in the stacked spectrum of 560 AGN PSBs and that of a control sample of star-forming galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using a two component (inter-stellar +wind) absorption-line model of the \ion{Na}{i} doublet, and after accounting for the stellar photospheric absorption, we find that the AGN PSBs have a centroid wind velocity shift of $-252^{+64}_{-57}$ km s$^{-1}$ and a maximum…
We present the discovery of rare active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in nearby (z < 0.05) compact elliptical galaxies (cEs) located in isolated environments. Using spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12, four AGNs were identified based on the optical emission-line diagnostic diagram. SDSS optical spectra of AGNs show the presence of distinct narrow-line emissions. Utilizing the black hole (BH) mass-stellar velocity dispersion scaling relation and the correlation between the narrow L([OIII])/L(H\b{eta}) line ratio and the width of the broad Hα emission line, we es…
Outflows in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are crucial to understand in investigating the co-evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies since outflows may play an important role as an AGN feedback mechanism. Based on the archival UV spectra obtained with HST and IUE, we investigate outflows in the broad-line region (BLR) in low-redshift AGNs (z < 0.4) through the detailed analysis of the velocity profile of the CIV emission line. We find a dependence of the outflow strength on the Eddington ratio and the BLR metallicity in our low-redshift AGN sample, which is consist…
We study winds in 12 X-ray AGN host galaxies at z ~ 1. We find, using the low-ionization Fe II 2586 absorption in the stacked spectra, that the probability distribution function (PDF) of the centroid velocity shift in AGN has a median, 16th and 84th percentiles of (-87, -251, +86) km/s respectively. The PDF of the velocity dispersion in AGN has a median, 84th and 16th percentile of (139, 253, 52) km/s respectively. The centroid velocity and the velocity dispersions are obtained from a two component (ISM+wind) absorption line model. The equivalent width PDF of the outflow in AGN has median, 84t…
The scaling relations between supermassive black holes and their host galaxy properties are of fundamental importance in the context black hole-host galaxy co-evolution throughout cosmic time. In this work, we use a novel algorithm that identifies smooth trends in complex datasets and apply it to a sample of 2,000 type I active galactic nuclei (AGN) spectra. We detect a sequence in emission line shapes and strengths which reveals a correlation between the narrow L([OIII])/L(H$β$) line ratio and the width of the broad H$α$. This scaling relation ties the kinematics of the gas clouds in the broa…
Binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provide clues to how gas-rich mergers trigger and fuel AGNs and how supermassive black hole (SMBH) pairs evolve in a gas-rich environment. While significant effort has been invested in their identification, the detailed properties of binary AGNs and their host galaxies are still poorly constrained. In a companion paper, we examined the nature of ionizing sources in the double nuclei of four kpc-scale binary AGNs with redshifts between 0.1~0.2. Here, we present their host galaxy morphology based on F336W (U-band) and F105W (Y-band) images taken by the Wide F…
A statistical study of intermediate Palomar Transient Factory supernovae (SNe) in Type 1 AGN has shown a major deficit of supernovae around Type 1 AGN host galaxies, with respect to Type 2 AGN hosts. The aim of this work is to test whether there is any preference for Type 1 AGN to host SN of a specific kind. Through the analysis of SN occurrence and their type (thermonuclear vs core-collapse), we can directly link the type of stars producing the SN events, thus this is an indirect way to study host galaxies in Type 1 AGN. We examine the detection fractions of SNe, the host galaxies and compare…
We use bulge-type classifications of 809 representative SDSS galaxies by Gadotti (2009) to classify a large sample of galaxies into real bulges (classical or elliptical) and pseudobulges using Random Forest. We use structural and stellar population predictors that can easily be measured without image decomposition. Multiple parameters such as the central mass density with 1 kpc, concentration index, Sérsic index and velocity dispersion do result in accurate bulge classifications when combined together. We classify $\sim 44,500$ face-on galaxies above stellar mass of 10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$ and red…
We present a detailed study of the optical spectroscopic properties of 12 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with candidate low-mass black holes (BHs) selected by Kamizasa et al. through rapid X-ray variability. The high-quality, echellette Magellan spectra reveal broad H$α$ emission in all the sources, allowing us to estimate robust viral BH masses and Eddington ratios for this unique sample. We confirm that the sample contains low-mass BHs accreting at high rates: the median $M_{\rm BH} = 1.2\times 10^6M_\odot$ and median $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}=0.44$. The sample follows the $M_{\rm BH}-σ_*$ rel…

We present a multi-wavelength study of seven AGN at spectroscopic redshift >2.5 in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South, selected to have good FIR/sub-mm detections. Our aim is to investigate the possibility that the obscuration observed in the X-rays can be produced by the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. Based on the 7 Ms Chandra spectra, we measured obscuring column densities N$_{H, X}$ in excess of 7x10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and intrinsic X-ray luminosities L$_{X}$>10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for our targets, as well as equivalent widths for the Fe K$α$ emission line EW>0.5-1 keV. We built…

The mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of type-2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at 1.2 < z < 4.0 is investigated by using high-z radio galaxies (HzRGs) and X-ray selected radio-quiet AGNs. We combine new rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of two radio-quiet type-2 AGNs obtained with FOCAS on the Subaru Telescope with existing rest-frame UV emission lines, i.e., CIV1549, HeII1640, and CIII]1909, of a sample of 16 HzRGs and 6 additional X-ray selected type-2 AGNs, whose host stellar masses have been estimated in literature. We divided our sample in three stellar mass bins and calculated averaged em…
We investigate the relation of black hole mass versus host stellar mass and that of mass accretion rate versus star formation rate (SFR) in moderately luminous ($\log L_{\rm bol} \sim 44.5-46.5\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$), X-ray selected broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at $z=1.18-1.68$ in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. The far-infrared to far-ultraviolet spectral energy distributions of 85 AGNs are reproduced with the latest version of Code Investigating GALaxy Emission ({\tt CIGALE}), where the AGN clumpy torus model {\tt SKIRTOR} is implemented. Most of their hosts are confirmed to be m…
We produce a kinematic analysis of AGN-hosting cluster galaxies from a sample 33 galaxy clusters selected using the X-ray Clusters Database (BAX) and populated with galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 (DR8). The 33 galaxy clusters are delimited by their relative intensity of member galaxy substructuring as a proxy to core merging to derive two smaller sub-samples of 8 dynamically active (merging) and 25 dynamically relaxed (non-merging) states. The AGN were selected for each cluster sub-sample by employing the WHAN diagram to the strict criteria of log$_{10}$([NII]…
We study the relationship between the structure and star-formation rate (SFR) of X-ray selected low and moderate luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the two Chandra Deep Fields, using Hubble Space Telescope imaging from the Cosmic Assembly Near Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and deep far-infrared maps from the PEP+GOODS-Herschel survey. We derive detailed distributions of structural parameters and FIR luminosities from carefully constructed control samples of galaxies, which we then compare to those of the AGNs. At z~1, AGNs show slightly diskier light profiles than mas…
Dwarf galaxies are the numerically dominating population in the dense regions of the universe. Although they seem to be simple systems at first view, the stellar populations of dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) might be fairly complex. Nucleated dEs are of particular interest, since a number of objects exhibit different stellar populations in their nuclei and host galaxy. We present stellar population parameters obtained from integrated optical spectra using a Lick index analysis of seven nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxies and their nuclei. After subtracting the scaled galaxy spectra from the n…
We present a series of $N$-body simulations representing the evolution of a galactic nucleus and its stellar content in a nearly one-to-one representation. The aim of this suite of simulations is to shed light on the interplay between nuclear clusters (NCs), super-massive black holes (SMBH) and the galactic nuclei in which they are contained. We modelled galaxies with masses from few times $10^8$ to $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, hosting in their nucleus a number of globular clusters and, in some cases, a central SMBH.
We study the properties of the host galaxies of Changing-Look Active Galactic Nuclei (CL AGNs) with the aim of understanding the conditions responsible for triggering CL activity. We find that CL AGN hosts primarily reside in the so-called green valley that is located between spiral-like star-forming galaxies and dead ellipticals, implying that CL AGNs are activated during distinct periods of quenching and galaxy transformation processes. CL AGN hosts have low galaxy asymmetry indicators, suggesting that secular evolutionary processes (the influence of bars and spirals, and possibly minor merg…

We investigate limits on the extinction values of Type Ia supernovae to statistically determine the most probable color excess, E(B-V), with galactocentric distance, and use these statistics to determine the absorption-to-reddening ratio, $R_V$, for dust in the host galaxies. We determined pixel-based dust mass surface density maps for 59 galaxies from the Key Insight on Nearby Galaxies: a Far-Infrared Survey with \textit{Herschel} (KINGFISH, Kennicutt et al. (2011)). We use Type Ia supernova spectral templates (Hsiao et al. 2007) to develop a Monte Carlo simulation of color excess E(B-V) with…
