Dust productivity and impact collision of the asteroid (596) Scheila

Photometric observations of asteroid (596) Scheila were obtained during and after its 2010 outburst. The estimated radius of the body (spherical approximation of the asteroidal body) was 51.2 km and 50.67 km for different methods. The ejected dust mass from the asteroid ranged from 2.5*10e7 to 3.4*10^7 kg for different methods. An impact mechanism for triggering Scheila's activity is discussed. A few days before the impact, Scheila passed through the corridors of two potential cometary streams.

Near Infrared Observations of Comet-Like Asteroid (596) Scheila

Scheila's Scar: Direct Evidence of Impact Surface Alteration on a Primitive Asteroid

Asteroid (596) Scheila was the first object for which the immediate aftermath of an inter-asteroidal collision was observed. In Dec. 2010, the 113 km-sized asteroid was impacted by a smaller asteroid of less than 100 m in diameter. The scale of the impactor was established by observations of fading ejecta plumes. Comparison of the light curves obtained before and after the impact allowed us to assess how much of Scheila's surface was altered. Collisional Excavation of Asteroid (596) Scheila

We observed asteroid (596) Scheila and its ejecta cloud using the Swift UV-optical telescope. We obtained photometry of the nucleus and the ejecta, and for the first time measured the asteroid's reflection spectrum between 290 - 500 nm. Our measurements indicate significant reddening at UV wavelengths (13% per 1000 Å) and a possible broad, unidentified absorption feature around 380 nm. Optical and Dynamical Characterization of Comet-Like Main-Belt Asteroid (596) Scheila

We present observations and a dynamical analysis of the comet-like main-belt object, (596) Scheila. V-band photometry obtained on UT 2010 December 12 indicates that Scheila's dust cloud has a scattering cross-section ~1.4 times larger than that of the nucleus, corresponding to a dust mass of M_d~3x10^7 kg. V-R color measurements indicate that both the nucleus and dust are redder than the Sun, with no significant color differences between the dust cloud's northern and southern plumes. Results of Complex Observations of Asteroid (596) Scheila at the Sanglokh International Astronomical Observatory

Results of astrometric and BVRI photometric observations of the active asteroid (596) Scheila are presented. Interpretation of (596) Scheila's Triple Dust Tails

Strange-looking dust cloud around asteroid (596) Scheila was discovered on 2010 December 11.44-11.47. Unlike normal cometary tails, it consisted of three tails and faded within two months. We constructed a model to reproduce the morphology of the dust cloud based on the laboratory measurement of high velocity impacts and the dust dynamics. Dust emission was detected on main-belt asteroid 596 Scheila in December 2010, and attributed to the collision of a few-tens-of-meters projectile on the surface of the asteroid. Hubble Space Telescope Observations of Main Belt Comet (596) Scheila

We present Hubble Space Telescope Observations of (596) Scheila during its recent dust outburst. The nucleus remained point-like with absolute magnitude V(1,1,0) = 8.85+/-0.02 in our data, equal to the pre-outburst value, with no secondary fragments of diameter =>100 m (for assumed albedos 0.04). Some asteroids eject dust, unexpectedly producing transient, comet-like comae and tails. First ascribed to the sublimation of near-surface water ice, mass losing asteroids (also called "main-belt comets") can in fact be driven by a surprising diversity of mechanisms. Limits to Ice on Asteroids (24) Themis and (65) Cybele

We present optical spectra of (24) Themis and (65) Cybele, two large main-belt asteroids on which exposed water ice has recently been reported. No emission lines, expected from resonance fluorescence in gas sublimated from the ice, were detected. Derived limits to the production rates of water are < 400 kg/s (5σ), for each object, assuming a cometary H2O/CN ratio. Modelling the brightness increase signature due to asteroid collisions

We have developed a model to predict the post-collision brightness increase of sub-catastrophic collisions between asteroids and to evaluate the likelihood of a survey detecting these events. It is based on the cratering scaling laws of Holsapple and Housen (2007) and models the ejecta expansion following an impact as occurring in discrete shells each with their own velocity. We present initial results from observations and numerical analyses aimed at characterizing main-belt comet P/2012 T1 (PANSTARRS).
