The search for Earth-like exoplanets requires high-contrast and high-angular resolution instruments, which designs can be very complex: they need an adaptive optics system to compensate for the effect of the atmospheric turbulence on image quality and a coronagraph to reduce the starlight and enable the companion imaging. During the instrument design phase and the error budget process, studies of performance as a function of optical errors are needed and require multiple end-to-end numerical simulations of wavefront errors through the optical system.
In particular, the detailed analysis of long-exposure images enables to evaluate the image quality (photon noise level, impact of optical aberrations and of adaptive optics residuals, etc.). Nowadays simulating one long but finite exposure image means drawing several thousands of random frozen phase screens, simulating the image associated with each of them after propagation through the imaging instrument, and averaging all the images. Such a process is time consuming, demands a great deal of computer resources, and limits the number of parametric optimization.
We propose an alternative and innovative method to directly express the statistics of ground-based images for long but finite exposure times. It is based on an analytical model, which only requires the statistical properties of the atmospheric turbulence. Such a method can be applied to optimize the design of future instruments such as SPHERE+ (VLT) or the planetary camera and spectrograph (PCS - ELT) or any ground-based instrument.
We report the atmospheric turbulence parameters namely, atmospheric seeing, the tilt-anisoplanatic angle ($θ_0$) and the coherence time ($τ_0$), measured under various sky conditions, at Vainu Bappu Observatory in Kavalur. Bursts of short exposure images of selected stars were recorded with a high-speed, frame-transfer CCD mounted on the Cassegrain focus of a newly commissioned 1.3 m telescope. The estimated median seeing is $ \approx 1.85^{\prime\prime} $ at wavelength of $\sim 600$ nm, the image motion correlation between different pairs of stars is $\sim 44\%$ for $θ_0 \approx 36^{\prime\pr…
Atmospheric profiling is a requirement for controlling wide-field Adaptive Optics (AO) instruments, analyzing the AO performance with respect to the observing conditions and predicting the Point Spread Function (PSF) spatial variations. We present PEPITO, a new concept for profiling atmospheric turbulence from {\em post~facto} tip-tilt (TT) corrected short-exposure images. PEPITO utilizes the anisokinetism effect in the images between several stars separated from a reference star, and then produces the profile estimation using a model-fitting methodology, by fitting to the long exposure TT-cor…
The effect of satellite constellations on observations in the visible and IR domains is estimated, considering 18 constellations in development by SpaceX, Amazon, OneWeb, and others, with over 26,000 satellites, constituting a representative distribution. This study uses a series of simplifications and assumptions to obtain conservative, order-of-magnitude estimates of the effects. The number of illuminated satellites from the constellations above the horizon ranges from ~1600 right after sunset, decreasing to 1100 at the end of astronomical twilight, most of them (~85%) close to the horizon (…
The atmospheric scintillation of stars is the main limitation of the accuracy of ground-based photometry of astronomical objects. This becomes particularly noticeable for a study of a variability with amplitudes on the order to thousandths of stellar magnitude or less. We examined the problem of the colour scintillation --- fluctuations of difference between light intensities measured simultaneously in two different photometric bands. Relations between the colour scintillation power (index) and the atmospheric turbulence, telescope diameter and the characteristics of the photometric channels a…
The accuracy of ground-based astronomical photometry is limited by two factors: photon statistics and stellar scintillation arising when star light passes through Earth's atmosphere. This paper examines the theoretical role of the outer scale $L_0$ of the optical turbulence (OT) which suppresses the low-frequency component of scintillation. It is shown that for typical values of $L_0 \sim 25 - 50$ m, this effect becomes noticeable for a telescopes of diameter around 4 m. On extremely large, $30 - 40$ m, telescopes with exposures longer than a few seconds, the inclusion of the outer scale in th…
Intelligent scheduling of the sequence of scientific exposures taken at ground-based astronomical observatories is massively challenging. Observing time is over-subscribed and atmospheric conditions are constantly changing. We propose to guide observatory scheduling using machine learning. Leveraging a 15-year archive of exposures, environmental, and operating conditions logged by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, we construct a probabilistic data-driven model that accurately predicts image quality. We demonstrate that, by optimizing the opening and closing of twelve vents placed on the dome…

The 3.6 meter Indo-Belgian Devasthal optical telescope (DOT) has been used for optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of celestial objects. The telescope has detected stars of B = 24.5+-0.2; R = 24.6+-0.12 and g = 25.2+-0.2 mag in exposure times of 1200, 4320 and 3600 seconds respectively. In one hour of exposure time, a distant galaxy of 24.3+-0.2 mag and point sources of ~ 25 mag have been detected in the SDSS i band. The NIR observations show that stars up to J = 20+-0.1; H = 18.8+-0.1 and K = 18.2+-0.1 mag can be detected in effective exposure times of 500, 550 and 1000 seconds respe…
We describe a versatile pipeline for processing the data collected by the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on board Indian Multi-wavelength astronomical satellite AstroSat.The UVIT instrument carries out simultaneous astronomical imaging through selected filters / gratings in Far-Ultra-Violet (FUV), Near-Ultra-Violet & visible (VIS) bands of the targeted circular sky field (~ 0.5 deg dia). This pipeline converts the data (Level-1) emanating from UVIT in their raw primitive format supplemented by inputs from the spacecraft sub-systems into UV sky images (& slitless grating spectra) and ass…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be able to perform unprecedented observations of the transient very high-energy sky. An on-line science alert generation (SAG) pipeline, with a required 30 second latency, will allow the discovery or follow-up of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and flaring emission from active galactic nuclei, galactic compact objects and electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves or neutrino messengers. The CTA sensitivity for very short exposures does not only depend on the technological performance of the array (e.g. effective area, background discrimination efficie…
The Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) is a wide field multi-fiber spectrograph using the prime focus of the Subaru telescope, which is capable of observing up to 2400 astronomical objects simultaneously. The instrument control software will manage the observation procedure communicateing with subsystems such as the fiber positioner "COBRA", the metrology camera system, and the spectrograph and camera systems. Before an exposure starts, the instrument control system needs to access to a database where target lists provided by observers are stored in advance, and accurately position fibers onto ast…
Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) use large-aperture (~ 10 - 30 m) optical telescopes with arcminute angular resolution to detect TeV gamma-rays in the atmosphere. I show that IACTs are well-suited for optical observations of bright sources (V <= 8 - 10), because these sources are brighter than the sky background. Their advantages are especially great on rapid time-scales. Thus, IACTs are ideal for studying many phenomena optically, including transiting exoplanets and the brightest gamma-ray bursts. In principle, an IACT could achieve millimagnitude photometry of these objects w…

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan(日本国立天文台);Graduate Institute for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI(综合研究大学院大学);Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan(昴星团望远镜,日本国立天文台)
FIRST, the Fibered Imager foR a Single Telescope, is a spectro-imager using single-mode fibers for pupil remapping, allowing measurements beyond the telescope diffraction limit. Integrated on the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics instrument at the Subaru Telescope, it benefits from a very stable visible light wavefront allowing to acquire long exposure and operate on significantly fainter sources than previously possible. On-sky results demonstrated the ability of the instrument to detect stellar companions separated 43mas in the case of the Capella binary system. A similar approach…
Real-time seeing and outer scale estimation at the location of the focus of a telescope is fundamental for the adaptive optics systems dimensioning and performance prediction, as well as for the operational aspects of instruments. This study attempts to take advantage of multiwavelength long exposure images to instantaneously and simultaneously derive the turbulence outer scale and seeing from the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of seeing-limited images taken at the focus of a telescope. These atmospheric parameters are commonly measured in most observatories by different methods located awa…
The High Latitude Survey of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is expected to measure the positions and shapes of hundreds of millions of galaxies in an area of 2220 deg$^2$. This survey will provide high-quality weak lensing data with unprecedented systematics control. The Roman Space Telescope will survey the sky in near infrared (NIR) bands using Teledyne H4RG HgCdTe photodiode arrays. These NIR arrays exhibit an effect called persistence: charges that are trapped in the photodiodes during earlier exposures are gradually released into later exposures, leading to contamination of the imag…
SAINT (Small Aperture Imaging Network Telescope) -- a wide-field telescope complex for detecting and studying optical transients at times from milliseconds to years
Real-time seeing estimation at the focus of a telescope is nowadays strongly emphasized as this knowledge virtually drives the dimensioning of adaptive optics systems and instrument operational aspects. In this context we study the interest of using active optics Shack-Hartmann (AOSH) sensor images to provide accurate estimate of the seeing. The AOSH practically delivers long exposure spot PSFs -- at the critical location of the telescope focus -- being directly related to the atmospheric seeing in the line of sight. Although AOSH sensors are not specified to measure spot sizes but slopes, we …
To explore capabilities of moderate-size optical telescopes in surveys, the set of 9 new wide-field designs having apertures up to 1 m is considered. All but one systems have angular field of view in a range 3.5-10 degrees and flat focal surface; the field of the last system is 45 degrees in diameter at the 0.5 m aperture and spherical focal surface. The complete description of the optical layouts is given in the Appendix. Relations between the expected limiting magnitude, survey speed and exposure time allow to choose the system that is most suitable for a particular task of observations. In …
HSTCosmicrays is a python-based pipeline designed to find and characterize cosmic rays found in dark frames (exposures taken with the shutter closed). Dark exposures are obtained routinely by all the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) instruments for calibration. The main processing pipeline runs locally or in the cloud on AWS. To date, we have characterized more than 1.2 billion cosmic rays in ~76,000 dark frames obtained with CCDs from the four active instruments ACS/HRC, ACS/WFC, STIS, WFC3/UVIS, and the legacy instrument WFPC2.
High contrast imaging searches for exoplanets have been conducted on 2.4-10 m telescopes, typically at H band (1.6 microns) and used exposure times of ~1 hr to search for planets with semi-major axes of > ~10 AU. We are beginning to plan for surveys using extreme-AO systems on the next generation of 30-meter class telescopes, where we hope to begin probing the habitable zones (HZs) of nearby stars. Here we highlight a heretofore ignorable problem in direct imaging: planets orbit their stars. Under the parameters of current surveys, orbital motion is negligible over the duration of a typical ob…
Bright single and binary stars were observed at the 4.1-m telescope with a fast electron-multiplication camera in the regime of partial turbulence correction by the visible-light adaptive optics system. We compare the angular resolution achieved by simple averaging of AO-corrected images (long-exposure), selection and re-centering (shift-and-add or "lucky" imaging) and speckle interferometry. The effect of partial AO correction, vibrations, and image post-processing on the attained resolution is shown. Potential usefulness of these techniques is evaluated for reaching the diffraction limit in …
The Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) is a new optical/near-infrared multi-fiber spectrograph designed for the prime focus of the 8.2m Subaru telescope. The metrology camera system of PFS serves as the optical encoder of the COBRA fiber motors for the configuring of fibers. The 380mm diameter aperture metrology camera will locate at the Cassegrain focus of Subaru telescope to cover the whole focal plane with one 50M pixel Canon CMOS sensor. The metrology camera is designed to provide the fiber position information within 5μm error over the 45cm focal plane. The positions of all fibers can be obta…
A new era of ground-based observations, either in the infrared with the next-generation of 25-40m extremely large telescopes or in the visible with the 8m Very Large Telescope, is going to be assisted by multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) to restore the unprecedented resolutions potentially available for these systems in absence of atmospheric turbulence. Astrometry is one of the main science drivers, as MCAO can provide good quality and uniform correction over wide field of views ($\sim$ 1 arcmin) and offer a large number of reference sources with high image quality. The requirements have…
Recent advancements in low-cost astronomical equipment, including high-quality medium-aperture telescopes and low-noise CMOS detectors, have made the deployment of large optical telescope arrays both financially feasible and scientifically interesting. The Argus Optical Array is one such system, composed of 900 eight-inch telescopes, which is planned to cover the entire night sky in each exposure and is capable of being the deepest and fastest Northern Hemisphere sky survey. With this new class of telescope comes new challenges: determining optimal individual telescope pointings to achieve req…
The NEID spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5-m telescope at Kitt Peak has completed its first full year of science operations and is reliably delivering sub-m/s precision radial velocity measurements. The NEID instrument control system uses the TIMS package (Bender et al. 2016), which is a client-server software system built around the twisted python software stack. During science observations, interaction with the NEID spectrograph is handled through a pair of graphical user interfaces (GUIs), written in PyQT, which wrap the underlying instrument control software and provide straightforward and reli…

FIRST, the Fibered Imager foR a Single Telescope instrument, is an ultra-high angular resolution spectro-imager, able to deliver calibrated images and measurements beyond the telescope diffraction limit, a regime that is out of reach for conventional AO imaging. FIRST achieves sensitivity and accuracy by coupling the full telescope to an array of single mode fibers. Interferometric fringes are spectrally dispersed and imaged on an EMCCD. An 18-Fiber FIRST setup is currently installed on the Subaru Coronographic Extreme Adaptive Optics instrument at Subaru telescope. It is being exploited for b…

Wayne State University's Dan Zowada Memorial Observatory is a fully robotic 0.5m telescope and imaging system located under the dark skies of New Mexico. The observatory is particularly suited to time domain astronomy: the observation of variable objects, such as tidal disruption events, supernovae, and active galactic nuclei. We have developed a software suite for image reduction, alignment and stacking, and calculation of absolute photometry in the Sloan filters used at the telescope. Our pipeline also performs image subtraction to enable photometry of objects embedded in bright backgrounds …
We recently proposed a new lucky imaging technique, the Power Spectrum Extended (PSE), adapted for image reconstruction of short-exposure astronomical images in case of weak turbulence or partial adaptive optics correction. In this communication we show applications of this technique to observations of about 30 binary stars in H band with the 1m telescope of the Calern C2PU observatory. We show some images reconstructed at the diffraction limit of the telescope and provide measurements of relative astrometry and photometry of observed couples.
Sub milli-arcsecond imaging in the visible band will provide a new perspective in stellar astrophysics. Even though stellar intensity interferometry was abandoned more than 40 years ago, it is capable of imaging and thus accomplishing more than the measurement of stellar diameters as was previously thought. Various phase retrieval techniques can be used to reconstruct actual images provided a sufficient coverage of the interferometric plane is available. Planned large arrays of Air Cherenkov telescopes will provide thousands of simultaneously available baselines ranging from a few tens of mete…
The Transient Optical Sky Survey (TOSS) is an automated, ground-based telescope system dedicated to searching for optical transient events. Small telescope tubes are mounted on a tracking, semi-equatorial frame with a single polar axis. Each fixed declination telescope records successive exposures which overlap in right ascension. Nightly observations produce time-series images of fixed fields within each declination band. We describe the TOSS data pipeline, including automated routines used for image calibration, object detection and identification, astrometry, and differential photometry. Ti…
We evaluate a pre-production BACHES échelle spectrograph in terms of its usefulness for radial velocity surveys of binary stars with small telescopes in a remote and autonomous. We use the Solaris-4 observatory located in Casleo, Argentina, that is part of a global network of autonomous observatories as the test-bed for the instrument. The setup is designed in such a way that spectroscopy and photometry can be carried out using the same telescope without the need to mechanically modify the imaging train. We observe single spectroscopic standard stars as well as binary stars up to 9.75 mag. We …
In order to evaluate the ground-based infrared telescope sensitivity affected by the noise from the atmosphere, instruments and detectors, we construct a sensitivity model that can calculate limiting magnitudes and signal-to-noise ratio ($S/N$). The model is tested with tentative measurements of $\rm M'$-band sky brightness and atmospheric extinction obtained at the Ali and Daocheng sites. We find that the noise caused by an excellent scientific detector and instruments at $-135^\circ \rm C$ can be ignored compared to the $\rm M'$-band sky background noise. Thus, when $S/N=3$ and total exposur…
Long-exposure stellar images recorded with large ground-based telescopes are blurred due to the turbulent nature of the atmosphere. The VLT employs active and adaptive optics (AO) systems to compensate for the deleterious effects of the atmosphere in real time. The speckle imaging technique provides an alternative way to achieve diffraction-limited imaging by post-processing a series of short-exposure images. The use of speckle imaging with the no-AO mode of NACO at the VLT is demonstrated. Application of this technique is particularly suited to the J-band and it provides versatile high angula…
Incorporating Wavefront Error, Wavefront Sensing and Control, and Sensitivities into Exposure Time Calculations for Future Space Missions with the Error Budget Software (EBS)
Space Telescope Science Institute(太空望远镜科学研究所);Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology(喷气推进实验室,加州理工学院)
The strength and vertical distribution of atmospheric turbulence is a key factor determining the performance of optical and infrared telescopes, with and without adaptive optics. Yet, this remains challenging to measure. We describe a new technique using a sequence of short-exposure images of a star field, obtained with a small telescope. Differential motion between all pairs of star images is used to compute the structure functions of longitudinal and transverse wavefront tilt for a range of angular separations. These are compared with theoretical predictions of simple turbulence models by me…
Directly imaging Earth-like exoplanets (``exoEarths'') with a coronagraph instrument on a space telescope requires a stable wavefront with optical path differences limited to tens of picometers RMS during exposure times of a few hours. While the structural dynamics of a segmented mirror can be directly stabilized with telescope metrology, another possibility is to use a closed-loop wavefront sensing and control system in the coronagraph instrument that operates during the science exposures to actively correct the wavefront and relax the constraints on the stability of the telescope. In this pa…
Optical stellar intensity interferometry with air Cherenkov telescope arrays, composed of nearly 100 telescopes, will provide means to measure fundamental stellar parameters and also open the possibility of model-independent imaging. In addition to sensitivity issues, a main limitation of image recovery in intensity interferometry is the loss of phase of the complex degree of coherence during the measurement process. Nevertheless, several model-independent phase reconstruction techniques have been developed. Here we implement a Cauchy-Riemann based algorithm to recover images from simulated da…

We present an application of Deep Learning for the image recognition of asteroid trails in single-exposure photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Using algorithms based on multi-layered deep Convolutional Neural Networks, we report accuracies of above 80% on the validation set. Our project was motivated by the Hubble Asteroid Hunter project on Zooniverse, which focused on identifying these objects in order to localize and better characterize them. We aim to demonstrate that Machine Learning techniques can be very useful in trying to solve problems that are closely related to Astronomy and…
The Star-Planet Activity Research CubeSat (SPARCS) is a 6U CubeSat under development to monitor the flaring and chromospheric activity of M dwarfs at near-ultraviolet (NUV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) wavelengths. The Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME) is one of the main payloads of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT). The background of Insight-HXMT/ME is mainly caused by the environmental charged particles and the background intensity is modulated remarkably by the geomagnetic field, as well as the geographical location. At the same geographical location, the background spectral shape is stable but the intensity varies with the level of the environmental charged particles. In this paper, we develop a model to estimate the ME background based on the ME database that is establish…

The simulated images can be produced for any required field size, exposure time, Point Spread Function (PSF), telescope mirror size, pixel resolution, field star density, and a variety of detec…

Following the suggestion of Gould and Depoy (1998) we investigate the feasibility of studying the brightest microlensing events towards the Galactic bulge using a small aperture (~10 cm) telescope. We used one of the HAT telescopes to obtain 151 exposures spanning 88 nights in 2005 of an 8.4x8.4 square degree FOV centered on (l,b) = (2.85, -5.00). We reduced the data using image subtraction software. We find that such a search method can effectively contribute to monitoring bright microlensing events, as was advocated. Comparing this search method to the existing ones we find a dedicated bulge…
The Astro2020 decadal survey recommended an infrared, optical, ultra-violet (IR/O/UV) telescope with a $\sim$6~m inscribed diameter and equipped with a coronagraph instrument to directly image exoEarths in the habitable zone of their host star. A telescope of such size may need to be segmented to be folded and then carried by current launch vehicles. However, a segmented primary mirror introduces the potential for additional mid spatial frequency optical wavefront instabilities during the science operations that would degrade the coronagraph performance. A coronagraph instrument with a wavefro…
Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) detectors, widely used to obtain digital imaging, can be damaged by high energy radiation. Degraded images appear blurred, because of an effect known as Charge Transfer Inefficiency (CTI), which trails bright objects as the image is read out. It is often possible to correct most of the trailing during post-processing, by moving flux back to where it belongs. We compare several popular algorithms for this: quantifying the effect of their physical assumptions and tradeoffs between speed and accuracy. We combine their best elements to construct a more accurate model of…
