Let $G$ be a finitely generated group. Cashen and Mackay proved that if the contracting boundary of $G$ with the topology of fellow travelling quasi-geodesics is compact then $G$ is a hyperbolic group. Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a finite collection of finitely generated infinite index subgroups of $G$. Let $G^h$ be the cusped space obtained by attaching combinatorial horoballs to each left cosets of elements of $\mathcal {H}$. In this article, we prove that if the combinatorial horoballs are contracting and $G^h$ has compact contracting boundary then $G$ is hyperbolic relative to $\mathcal{H}$.
Let $X$ be a proper CAT(0) space and let $G$ be a cocompact group of isometries of $X$ which acts properly discontinuously. Charney and Sultan constructed a quasi-isometry invariant boundary for proper CAT(0) spaces which they called the contracting boundary. The contracting boundary imitates the Gromov boundary for $δ$-hyperbolic spaces. We will make this comparison more precise by establishing some well known results for the Gromov boundary in the case of the contracting boundary. We show that the dynamics on the contracting boundary is very similar to that of a $δ$-hyperbolic group. In part…
A group $Γ$ with a family of subgroups $\mathbb{P}$ is relatively hyperbolic if $Γ$ admits a cusp-uniform action on a proper $δ$--hyperbolic space. We show that any two such spaces for a given group pair are quasi-isometric, provided the spaces have "constant horospherical distortion," a condition satisfied by Groves--Manning's cusped Cayley graph and by all negatively curved symmetric spaces. Consequently the Bowditch boundary admits a canonical quasisymmetric structure, which coincides with the "naturally occurring" quasisymmetric structure of the symmetric space when considering lattices in…
The main technical result of this paper is to characterize the contracting isometries of a CAT(0) cube complex without any assumption on its local finiteness. Afterwards, we introduce the combinatorial boundary of a CAT(0) cube complex, and we show that contracting isometries are strongly related to isolated points at infinity, when the complex is locally finite. This boundary turns out to appear naturally in the context of Guba and Sapir's diagram groups, and we apply our main criterion to determine precisely when an element of a diagram group induces a contracting isometry on the associated …
The 'contracting boundary' of a proper geodesic metric space consists of equivalence classes of geodesic rays that behave like rays in a hyperbolic space. We introduce a geometrically relevant, quasi-isometry invariant topology on the contracting boundary. When the space is the Cayley graph of a finitely generated group we show that our new topology is metrizable.
Let $X$ be a proper geodesic metric space and let $G$ be a group of isometries of $X$ which acts geometrically. Cordes constructed the Morse boundary of $X$ which generalizes the contracting boundary for CAT(0) spaces and the visual boundary for hyperbolic spaces. We characterize Morse elements in $G$ by their fixed points on the Morse boundary $\partial_MX$. The dynamics on the Morse boundary is very similar to that of a $δ$-hyperbolic space. In particular, we show that the action of $G$ on $\partial_MX$ is minimal if $G$ is not virtually cyclic. We also get a uniform convergence result on th…
For a group hyperbolic relative to virtually nilpotent subgroups, on a cusped graph associated to the group, we construct a random walk whose Martin boundary is the Bowditch boundary of the group. Moreover, the harmonic measure is a conformal density corresponding to a hyperbolic Green metric and is exact dimensional on the Bowditch boundary. The latter equipped with a visual distance induced by the Green metric is an Ahlfors-regular metric measure space. The dimension is given in terms of the drift, a Green drift and the asymptotic entropy. The Patterson-Sullivan density for the action on the…
We establish growth tightness for a class of groups acting geometrically on a geodesic metric space and containing a contracting element. As a consequence, any group with nontrivial Floyd boundary are proven to be growth tight with respect to word metrics. In particular, all non-elementary relatively hyperbolic group are growth tight. This generalizes previous works of Arzhantseva-Lysenok and Sambusetti. Another interesting consequence is that CAT(0) groups with rank-1 elements are growth tight with respect to CAT(0)-metric.
Suppose a finitely generated group $G$ is hyperbolic relative to $\mathcal P$ a set of proper finitely generated subgroups of $G$. Established results in the literature imply that a "visual" metric on $\partial (G,\mathcal P)$ is "linearly connected" if and only if the boundary $\partial (G,\mathcal P)$ has no cut point. Our goal is to produce linearly connected metrics on $\partial (G,\mathcal P)$ that are "piecewise" visual when $\partial (G,\mathcal P)$ contains cut points. %Visual metrics for $\partial (G,\mathcal P)$ are tightly linked to inner products of geodesic rays in "cusped" spaces…
We show that the sublinearly Morse directions in the visual boundary of a rank-1 CAT(0) space with a geometric group action are generic in several commonly studied senses of the word, namely with respect to Patterson-Sullivan measures and stationary measures for random walks. We deduce that the sublinearly Morse boundary is a model of the Poisson boundary for finitely supported random walks on groups acting geometrically on rank-1 CAT (0) spaces. We prove an analogous result for mapping class group actions on Teichmüller space. Our main technical tool is a criterion, valid in any unique geodes…
Suppose $G$ is a 1-ended finitely presented group that is hyperbolic relative to $\mathcal P$ a finite collection of 1-ended finitely presented proper subgroups of $G$. Our main theorem states that if the boundary $\partial (G,{\mathcal P})$ is locally connected and the second cohomology group $H^2(P,\mathbb ZP)$ is free abelian for each $P\in \mathcal P$, then $H^2(G,\mathbb ZG)$ is free abelian. When $G$ is 1-ended it is conjectured that $\partial (G,\mathcal P)$ is always locally connected. Under mild conditions on $G$ and the members of $\mathcal P$ the 1-ended and local connectivity hypot…
We study automaton groups without singular points, that is, points in the boundary for which the map that associates to each point its stabilizer, is not continuous. This is motivated by the problem of finding examples of infinite bireversible automaton groups with all trivial stabilizers in the boundary, raised by Grigorchuk and Savchuk. We show that, in general, the set of singular points has measure zero. Then we focus our attention on several classes of automata. We characterize those contracting automata generating groups without singular points, and apply this characterization to the Bas…
Given a sublinear function $κ$, $κ$-Morse boundaries $\pka X$ of proper \CAT spaces are introduced by Qing, Rafi and Tiozzo. It is a topological space that consists of a large set of quasi-geodesic rays and it is quasi-isometrically invariant and metrizable. In this paper, we study the sublinearly Morse boundaries with the assumption that there is a proper cocompact action of a group $G$ on the \CAT space in question. We show that $G$ acts minimally on $\pka G$ and that contracting elements of $G$ induces a weak north-south dynamic on $\pka G$. Furthermore, we show that a homeomorphism $f \fro…
