We calculate the gravitational waves (GWs) induced by the density fluctuations due to inhomogeneous distribution of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the case where PBHs eventually dominate and reheat the universe by Hawking evaporation. The initial PBH density fluctuations are isocurvature in nature. We find that most of the induced GWs are generated right after evaporation, when the universe transits from the PBH dominated era to the radiation dominated era and the curvature perturbation starts to oscillate wildly. The strongest constraint on the amount of the produced GWs comes from the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). We improve previous constraints on the PBH fraction and find that it cannot exceed $10^{-3}$. Furthermore, this maximum fraction decreases as the mass increases and reaches $10^{-9}$ for $M_{\rm PBH}\sim 5\times10^8 {\rm g}$, which is the largest mass allowed by the BBN constraint on the reheating temperature. Considering that PBH may cluster above a given clustering scale, we also derive a lower bound on the scale of clustering. Interestingly, the GW spectrum for $M_{\rm PBH}\sim 10^4 -10^8 {\rm g}$ enters the observational window of LIGO and DECIGO and could be tested in the future. Although we focus on the PBH dominated early universe in this paper, our methodology is applicable to any model with early isocurvature perturbation.
We investigate primordial black hole formation in the matter-dominated phase of the Universe, where nonspherical effects in gravitational collapse play a crucial role. This is in contrast to the black hole formation in a radiation-dominated era. We apply the Zel'dovich approximation, Thorne's hoop conjecture, and Doroshkevich's probability distribution and subsequently derive the production probability $β_{0}$ of primordial black holes. The numerical result obtained is applicable even if the density fluctuation $σ$ at horizon entry is of the order of unity. For $σ\ll 1$, we find a semi-analyti…
We compute the spectral index of primordial perturbations in a rainbow universe. We allow the Newton constant $G$ to run at (super-)Planckian energies and we consider both vacuum and thermal perturbations. If the rainbow metric is the one associated to a generalized Horava-Lifshitz dispersion relation, we find that only when $G$ tends asymptotically to zero can one match the observed value of the spectral index and solve the horizon problem, both for vacuum and thermal perturbations. For vacuum fluctuations the observational constraints imply that the primordial universe expansion can be both …
We investigate the effect of inhomogeneity on primordial black hole formation in the matter dominated era. In the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous density distribution, a black hole forms if apparent horizon prevents information of the central region of the configuration from leaking. Since information cannot propagate faster than the speed of light, we identify the threshold of the black hole formation by considering the finite speed for propagation of information. We show that the production probability $β_{inhom}(σ)$ of primordial black holes, where $σ$ is density fluctuation at h…
We derive in detail the equations of motion for the tensorial modes of primordial metric perturbations in the Coupled-Scalar-Tachyon Bounce Universe. We solve for the gravitational wave equations in the pre-bounce contraction and the post-bounce expansion epochs. To match the solutions of the tensor perturbations, we idealise the bounce process yet retaining the essential physical properties of the bounce universe. We put forward two matching conditions: one ensures the continuity of the gravitational wave functions and the other respects the symmetric nature of the bounce dynamics. The matchi…
We consider the role of secondary infall and accretion onto an initially overdense perturbation in matter-dominated eras, like the one which is likely to follow the end of inflation. We show that primordial black holes may form through post-collapse accretion, namely the accretion onto an initial overdensity whose collapse has not given rise to a primordial black hole. Accretion may be also responsible for the growth of the primordial black hole masses by orders of magnitude till the end of the matter-dominated era.
We show that primordial black holes can be formed in the matter-dominated era with gravity described by the Brans-Dicke theory. Considering an early matter-dominated era between inflation and reheating, we found that the primordial black holes formed during that era evaporate at a quicker than those of early radiation-dominated era. Thus, in comparison with latter case, less number of primordial black holes could exist today. Again the constraints on primordial black hole formation tend towards the larger value than their radiation-dominated era counterparts indicating a significant enhancemen…
Ultra-light primordial black holes, with masses $m_\mathrm{PBH}<10^9\mathrm{g}$, evaporate before big-bang nucleosynthesis and can therefore not be directly constrained. They can however be so abundant that they dominate the universe content for a transient period (before reheating the universe via Hawking evaporation). If this happens, they support large cosmological fluctuations at small scales, which in turn induce the production of gravitational waves through second-order effects. Contrary to the primordial black holes, those gravitational waves survive after evaporation, and can therefore…
Since Hubble and Lamaitre's discovery of the expanding universe using galaxies till the recent discovery of the accelerating universe using standard candles, direct measurements of the evolution of the scale factor of the universe a(t) have played central roles in establishing the standard model of cosmology. In this letter, we show that such a measurement may be extended to the primordial universe using massive fields as standard clocks, providing a direct evidence for the scenario responsible for the Big Bang. This is a short and non-technical introduction to the idea of classical and quantu…
Exact numerical primordial primordial power spectra are computed and plotted for the for the best-fit Planck 2018 curved universe parameters. It is found that the spectra have generic cut-offs and oscillations within the observable window for the level of curvature allowed by current CMB measurements and provide a better fit to current data. Derivations for the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation for curved universes are presented and analysed, and theoretical implications for the quantum and classical initial conditions for inflation are discussed within the curved regime.
Carr and Hawking showed that the proper size of a spherical overdense region surrounded by a flat FRW universe cannot be arbitrarily large as otherwise the region would close up on itself and become a separate universe. From this result they derived a condition connecting size and density of the overdense region ensuring that it is part of our universe. Carr used this condition to obtain an upper bound for the density fluctuation amplitude with the property that for smaller amplitudes the formation of a primordial black hole is possible, while larger ones indicate a separate universe. In contr…
We investigate the behavior of the entanglement entropy of space in the primordial phase of the universe before the beginning of cosmic inflation. We argue that in this phase the entanglement entropy of a region of space grows from a zero-law to an area-law. This behavior provides a quantum version of the classical BKL conjecture that spatially separated points decouple in the approach to a cosmological singularity. We show that the relational growth of the entanglement entropy with the scale factor provides a new statistical notion of arrow of time in quantum gravity. The growth of entangleme…
We explore cosmological magnetogenesis in the post-inflationary universe, when the inflaton oscillates around its potential minimum and the universe is effectively dominated by cold matter. During this epoch prior to reheating, large-scale magnetic fields can be significantly produced by the cosmological background. By considering magnetogenesis both during and after inflation, we demonstrate that magnetic fields stronger than 10^{-15} G can be generated on Mpc scales without having strong couplings in the theory, or producing too large electric fields that would dominate the universe.
We study possibilities to explain the whole dark matter abundance by primordial black holes (PBHs) or to explain the merger rate of binary black holes estimated from the gravitational wave detections by LIGO/Virgo. We assume that the PBHs are originated in a radiation- or matter-dominated era from large primordial curvature perturbation generated by inflation. We take a simple model-independent approach considering inflation with large running spectral indices which are parametrized by $n_\text{s}, α_\text{s}$, and $β_\text{s}$ consistent with the observational bounds. The merger rate is fitte…
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are, typically light, black holes which can form in the early Universe. There are a number of formation mechanisms, including the collapse of large density perturbations, cosmic string loops and bubble collisions. The number of PBHs formed is tightly constrained by the consequences of their evaporation and their lensing and dynamical effects. Therefore PBHs are a powerful probe of the physics of the early Universe, in particular models of inflation. They are also a potential cold dark matter candidate.
In the presence of the local-type primordial non-Gaussianity, it is known that the clustering of primordial black holes (PBHs) emerges even on super-horizon scales at the formation time. This effect has been investigated in the high-peak limit of the PBH formation in the radiation-dominated epoch in the literature. There is another possibility that the PBH formation takes place in the early matter-dominated epoch. In this scenario, the high-peak limit is not applicable because even initially small perturbations grow and can become a PBH. We first derive a general formula to estimate the cluste…
The spectrum of primordial gravitational waves (GWs), especially its tilt $n_T$, carries significant information about the primordial universe. Combining recent aLIGO and Planck2015+BK14 data, we find that the current limit is $n_T=0.016^{+0.614}_{-0.989}$ at 95% C.L. We also estimate the impacts of Einstein Telescope and LISA on constraining $n_T$. Moreover, based on the effective field theory of cosmological perturbations, we make an attempt to confront some models of early universe scenarios, which produce blue-tilted GWs spectrum ($n_T>0$), with the corresponding datasets.
We investigate primordial magnetogenesis and the evolution of the electromagnetic field through a quantum bounce, in a model that starts in the far past from a contracting phase where only dust is present and the electromagnetic field is in the adiabatic quantum vacuum state. By including a coupling between curvature and electromagnetism of the form $RF_{μν}F^{μν}$, we find acceptable magnetic field seeds within the current observational constraints at 1 mega-parsec (Mpc), and that the magnetic power spectrum evolves as a power-law with spectral index $n_B=6$. It is also shown that the electro…
We speculate that the early Universe was inside a primordial black hole. The interior of the the black hole is a dS background and the two spacetimes are separated on the surface of black hole's event horizon. We argue that this picture provides a natural realization of inflation without invoking the inflaton field. The black hole evaporation by Hawking radiation provides a natural mechanism for terminating inflation so reheating and the hot big bang cosmology starts from the evaporation of black hole to relativistic particles. The quantum gravitational fluctuations at the boundary of black ho…

We numerically study the primordial black hole (PBH) formation by an isocurvature perturbation of a massless scalar field on super Hubble scales in the radiation-dominated universe. As a first step we perform simulations of spherically symmetric configurations. For the initial condition, we employ the spatial gradient expansion and provide the general form of the growing mode solutions valid up through the second order in this expansion. The initial scalar field profile is assumed to be Gaussian with a characteristic comoving wavenumber $k$; $\sim\exp(-k^2R^2)$, where $R$ is the radial coordin…
We propose an explanation for the present accelerated expansion of the universe that does not invoke dark energy or a modification of gravity and is firmly rooted in inflationary cosmology.
We consider a homogeneous and isotropic Universe, described by the minisuperspace Lagrangian with the scale factor as a generalized coordinate. We show that the energy of a closed Universe is zero. We apply the uncertainty principle to this Lagrangian and propose that the quantum uncertainty of the scale factor causes the primordial fluctuations of the matter density. We use the dynamics of the early Universe in the Einstein$-$Cartan theory of gravity with spin and torsion, which eliminates the big-bang singularity and replaces it with a nonsingular bounce. Quantum particle production in highl…
The conventional cosmological perturbation theory has been performed under the assumption that we know the whole spatial region of the universe with infinite volume. This is, however, not the case in the actual observations because observable portion of the universe is limited. To give a theoretical prediction to the observable fluctuations, gauge-invariant observables should be composed of the information in our local observable universe with finite volume. From this point of view, we reexamine the primordial non-Gaussianity in single field models, focusing on the bispectrum in the squeezed l…
Classically oscillating massive fields can be used as "standard clocks" in the primordial universe. They generate features in primordial density perturbations that directly record the scale factor evolution a(t). Detecting and measuring these "fingerprint" signals is challenging but would provide a direct evidence for a specific primordial universe paradigm. In this paper, such a search is performed for the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies using the WMAP7 data. Although a good fit to the data privileges a scale around k=0.01 Mpc^(-1), we do not find statisti…
Massive fields in the primordial universe function as standard clocks and imprint clock signals in the density perturbations that directly record the scale factor of the primordial universe as a function of time, a(t). A measurement of such signals would identify the specific scenario of the primordial universe in a model-independent fashion. In this Letter, we introduce a new mechanism through which quantum fluctuations of massive fields function as standard clocks. The clock signals appear as scale-dependent oscillatory signals in the power spectrum of alternative scenarios to inflation.
In prerecombination resolutions of the Hubble tension, such as early dark energy, new physics before recombination shifts the values of relevant cosmological parameters so that the models can fit with cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillations observations as well as $Λ$CDM does. In this paper, we clarify how the parameter shifts are related with $δH_0$, particularly we find the shift of primordial scalar spectral index scales as ${δn_s}\simeq 0.4{δH_0\over H_0}$ by performing the Monte Carlo Markov chain analysis with the Planck2018+BAO+Pantheon+R19+Keck Array/BICEP dataset.…
Emergent cosmological models, together with the Big Bang and bouncing scenarios, are among the possible descriptions of the early Universe. This work aims at clarifying some general features of the primordial tensor power spectrum in this specific framework. In particular, some naive beliefs are corrected. Using a toy model, we investigate the conditions required to produce a scale invariant spectrum and show to which extent this spectrum can exhibit local features sensitive to the details of the scale factor evolution near the transition time.
We study the effects of velocity dispersion on the formation of primordial black holes~(PBHs) in a matter-dominated era. The velocity dispersion is generated through the nonlinear growth of perturbations and has the potential to impede the gravitational collapse and thereby the formation of PBHs. To make discussions clear, we consider two distinct length scales. The larger one is where gravitational collapse occurs which could lead to PBH formation, and the smaller one is where the velocity dispersion develops due to nonlinear interactions. We estimate the effect of the velocity dispersion on …
Since the temperature fluctuations in cosmic microwave background (CMB) on large-angular scales probe length scales that were super-horizon sized at photon decoupling and hence insensitive to microphysical processes, the low-multipole CMB data are supposed to be a good probe to the physics of the primordial Universe. In this letter we will constrain the cosmological parameters in the base $Λ$CDM model with tensor perturbations by only using low-multipole CMB data, including Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (B2), Planck released in 2013 (P13) and Wilkinson Microwaves Anis…
We study scalar field fluctuations of the inflaton field in an early inflationary universe on an effective 4D Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) metric, which is obtained after make a planar coordinate transformation on a 5D Ricci-flat Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) static metric. We obtain the important result that the spectrum of fluctuations at zeroth order is independent of the scalar field mass $M$ on Schwarzschild scales, while on cosmological scales it exhibits a mass dependence. However, in the first-order expansion, the spectrum depends of the inflaton mass and the amplitude is linear with …
We use the wide-used \textsf{Einstein Toolkit} to solve the Einstein constraints and then simulate the expansion of primordial black hole lattices (PBHLs) with different value of $f_{\mathrm{PBH}}$ and $m_{\mathrm{PBH}}$. We find that $f_{\mathrm{PBH}}$ plays an important role during the evolution of PBHLs. Since the motion of primordial black holes (PBHs) caused by the expansion of PBHLs occurs at speeds close to that of light, we expect the emission of gravitational waves (GWs) during the expansion of PBHLs. We use both analytical estimates and numerical simulations to cross check the produc…
The most distinctive feature of the primordial density inhomogeneities that existed in the cosmic plasma at the instant of decoupling is their scale invariant power spectrum ${\cal P}(k) \sim k$ over the range $k \ll H_{eq}$ of modes with cosmologically large comoving wavelength. We characterize this feature in real space, in terms of their correlation function at two points. We show that over cosmologically large comoving distances $r \gg H^{-1}_{eq}$ the primordial inhomogeneities were (anti)correlated as $f(r) \sim - r^{-4}$. We revisit the so-called {\it origin of structures problem} of th…
We study the induced primordial gravitational waves (GW) coming from the effect of scalar perturbation on the tensor perturbation at the second order of cosmological perturbation theory. We use the evolution of the standard model degrees of freedom with respect to temperature in the early Universe to compute the induced gravitational waves bakcground. Our result shows that the spectrum of the induced GW is affected differently by the standard model degrees of freedom than the GW coming from first order tensor perturbation. This phenomenon is due to the presence of scalar perturbations as a sou…
We provide a very general argument showing that the Universe must have kept its quantum memories from an epoch much earlier than $60$ e-foldings before the end of inflation. The point is that a generic system of enhanced memory storage capacity exhibits a phenomenon of memory burden. Due to its universal nature this effect must be applicable to de Sitter since the latter has a maximal memory storage capacity thanks to its Gibbons-Hawking entropy. The primordial information pattern encoded in de Sitter memory initially costs very little energy. However, because of Gibbons-Hawking evaporation, t…
In this work we derive a scenario {in which} the early universe consists of {radiation fluid} and Bose-Einstein condensate. The possibility of gravitational self-interaction due to an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate is analyzed. The classical behavior of the scale factor of the universe is determined by a parameter associated with the Bose-Einstein fluid with bouncing or Big Crunch solutions. After we proceed to compute the finite-norm wave packet solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The behavior of the scale factor is studied by applying the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mech…
We investigate higher dimensional cosmological models in the semiclassical approximation with Hartle-Hawking Boundary conditions, assuming a gravitational action which is described by the scalar curvature with a cosmological constant. In the framework the probability for quantum creation of an inflationary universe with a pair of black holes in a multidimensional universe is evaluated. The probability for creation of a universe with a spatial section with $S^{1}XS^{D -2}$ topology is then compared with that of a higher dimensional de Sitter universe with $S^{D -1}$ spatial topology. It is foun…
General expressions are given for the generation of Primordial Black Holes (PBH) in a universe with a presently accelerated expansion due to a(n effective) cosmological constant. We give expressions both for a powerlaw scalefree primordial spectrum and for spectra which are not of that type. Specializing to the case of a pure cosmological constant $Λ$ and assuming flatness, we show that a comological constant with $Ω_{Λ,0}=0.7$ will decrease the mass variance at the PBH formation time by about 15% compared with a critical density universe.
We provide a simple but robust bound on the primordial curvature perturbation in the range $10^4 {\rm Mpc}^{-1} < k < 10^5 {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, which has not been constrained so far unlike low wavenumber modes. Perturbations on these scales dissipate the energy of their acoustic oscillations by the Silk damping after primordial nucleosynthesis but before the redshift $z \sim 2 \times 10^6$ and reheat the photon bath without invoking CMB distortions. This {\it acoustic reheating} results in the decrease of the baryon-photon ratio. By combining independent measurements probing the nucleosynthesis er…
Assuming that inflation is followed by a phase where the energy density of the Universe is dominated by a component with a general equation of state, we evaluate the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves induced in the post-inflationary Universe. We show that if the energy density of the Universe is dominated by a component $ϕ$ before Big Bang nucleosynthesis, its equation of state could be constrained by gravitational wave experiments depending on the ratio of energy densities of $ϕ$ and radiation, and also the temperature at the end of the $ϕ$ dominated era. Also, we discuss the impact …
Several processes in the early universe might lead to the formation of primordial black holes with different masses. These black holes would interact with the cosmic plasma through accretion and emission processes. Such interactions might have affected the dynamics of the universe and generated a considerable amount of entropy. In this paper we investigate the effects of the presence of primordial black holes on the evolution of the early universe. We adopt a two-fluid cosmological model with radiation and a primordial black hole gas. The latter is modelled with different initial mass function…
In this work, we study the evolution of Primordial Black Holes within the context of Loop Quantum Gravity. First we calculate the scale factor and energy density of the universe for different cosmic era and then taking these as inputs we study evolution of primordial black holes. From our estimation it is found that accretion of radiation does not affect evolution of primordial black holes in loop quantum gravity even though a larger number of primordial black holes may form in early universe in comparison with Einstein's or scalar-tensor theories.
We revisit the problem of PBH mass evolution in the radiation-dominated era. We solve the complete differential equation in the semiclassical regime with absorption and evaporation terms and show that PBHs can gain very little mass, if at all, in this era. Relativistic proper motion of PBHs respect to the CMBR, as a possible loophole in the growth argument, is shown to be unlikely. Finally we demonstrate that PBHs can not remain in thermodynamical equilibrium with the ambient radiation, and therefore initially non-evaporating black holes must enter the evaporating regime, supporting several ef…
The evolution of primordial black holes in a flat Friedmann universe with a massless scalar field is investigated in fully general relativistic numerical relativity. A primordial black hole is expected to form with a scale comparable to the cosmological apparent horizon, in which case it may go through an initial phase with significant accretion. However, if it is very close to the cosmological apparent horizon size, the accretion is suppressed due to general relativistic effects. In any case, it soon gets smaller than the cosmological horizon and thereafter it can be approximated as an isolat…
Both inflationary and ekpyrotic scenarios can account for the origin of the large scale structure of the universe. It is often said that detecting primordial gravitational waves is the key to distinguish both scenarios. We show that this is not true if the gauge kinetic function is present in the ekpyrotic scenario. In fact, primordial gravitational waves sourced by the gauge field can be produced in an ekpyrotic universe. We also study scalar fluctuations sourced by the gauge field and show that it is negligible compared to primordial gravitational waves. This comes from the fact that the fas…
In this paper, we have investigated the processes of evaporation and accretion of primordial black holes during the radiation-dominated era and the matter-dominated era. This subject is very important since usually these two processes are considered independent of each other. In other words, previous works consider them in such a way that they do not have a direct effect on each other, and as a result, their effects on the mass of primordial black holes are calculated separately. The calculations of this paper indicate that assuming these two processes independently of each other will lead to …
We investigate the spontaneous creation of primordial black holes in a lower-dimensional expanding early universe. We use the no-boundary proposal to construct instanton solutions for both the background and a black hole nucleated inside this background. The resulting creation rate could lead to a significant population of primordial black holes during the lower dimensional phase. We also consider the subsequent evaporation of these dimensionally reduced black holes and find that their temperature increases with mass, whereas it decreases with mass for 4-dimensional black holes. This means tha…
In supergravity models, the evaporation of light Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) should be a source of gravitinos. By considering this process, new stringent limits are derived on the abundance of small black holes with initial masses less than 10^9 g. In minimal supergravity, the subsequent decay of evaporated gravitinos into cascades of non-equilibrium particles leads to the formation of elements whose abundance is constrained by observations. In gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models, their density is required not to overclose the Universe. As a result, cosmological models with substant…
