Dark Matter (DM) may be comprised of axion-like particles (ALPs) with couplings to photons and the standard model fermions. In this paper we study photon signals arising from cosmic ray (CR) electron scattering on background ALPs. For a range of masses we find that these bounds can place competitive new constraints on the ALP-electron coupling, although in many models lifetime constraints may supersede these bounds. In addition to current Fermi constraints, we also consider future e-Astrogram bounds which will have greater sensitivity to ALP-CR induced gamma-rays.

A high finesse optical cavity can be used to search for cosmic axions in the mass range 10^{-6}< m_a <10^{-4} eV. Either a two-arm or a single-arm cavity is suitable and in either case the signal as resonant sidebands imposed on the carrier. Assuming for the local axion density the usual figure of 500 MeV/cm^3 [8], the KSVZ axion line [4] g/m_a = 0.4 Gev^{-2}, can be reached over the full mass range in a one year search.
We revisit the constraint from the recently reported cosmic birefringence on axion-like particles with a general decay constant. A particular attention is paid to the naturalness of the model parameter space, which has been overlooked in the literature. We show that the observed cosmic birefringence is naturally explained by the electroweak axion with a string-theory inspired decay constant $F_A\simeq 10^{16}$ GeV.
Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are hypothetical particles that occur in extensions of the Standard Model and are candidates for cold dark matter. They could be detected through their oscillations into photons in the presence of external electromagnetic fields. gammaALPs is an open-source python framework that computes the oscillation probability between photons and axions/ALPs. In addition to solving the photon-ALP equations of motion, gammaALPs includes models for magnetic fields in different astrophysical environments such as jets of active galactic nuclei, intra-cluster and intergal…
We apply the axion-photon conversion mechanism to the 130 GeV $γ$-ray line observed by the Fermi satellite. Near the Galactic center, some astrophysical sources and/or particle dark matter can produce energetic axions (or axionlike particles), and the axions convert to $γ$ rays in Galactic magnetic fields along their flight to the Earth. Since continuum $γ$-ray and antiproton productions are sufficiently suppressed in axion production, the scenario fits the 130 GeV $γ$-ray line without conflicting with cosmic ray measurements. We derive the axion production cross section and the decay rate of …
QCD axions are a well-motivated candidate for cold dark matter. Cold axions are produced in the early universe by vacuum realignment, axion string decay and axion domain wall decay. We show that cold axions thermalize via their gravitational self-interactions, and form a Bose-Einstein condensate. As a result, axion dark matter behaves differently from the other proposed forms of dark matter. The differences are observable.
We show for the classical Maxwell equations, including the axion electromagnetic anomaly source term, that a cosmic axion field induces an oscillating electric N-moment for any static magnetic N-moment. This is a straightforward result, accessible to anyone who has taken a first year graduate course in electrodynamics.
The recent electron recoil excess observed by XENON1T has a possible interpretation in terms of solar axions coupled to electrons. If such axions are still relativistic at recombination they would also leave a cosmic imprint in the form of an additional radiation component, parameterized by an effective neutrino number $ΔN_\text{eff}$. We explore minimal scenarios with a detectable signal in future CMB surveys: axions coupled democratically to all fermions, axion-electron coupling generated radiatively, the DFSZ framework for the QCD axion. The predicted $ΔN_\text{eff}$ is larger than $0.03-0.…
We model clusters of axions with spherically symmetric spacial but arbitrary momentum distributions and study the directional profile of photos produced in their evolution through spontaneous and stimulated decay of axions via the process a --> gamma + gamma. Several specific examples are presented.
The recently reported non-zero isotropic birefringence angle in Planck 2018 polarization data provides a tantalizing hint for new physics of axions. In this paper, we explain this by a string theory motivated axion with a monodromy potential that plays the role of dark energy. Upon using the birefringence measurement and the constraint on the equation of state for dark energy in this scenario, we find an upper bound on the axion decay constant as $f_a \lesssim 10^{16}$ GeV. This naturally gives an energy scale of order GUT and can resolve the theoretical issue of super-Planckian field range of…
Axionlike particles (ALPs) are a common prediction of theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics that could explain the entirety of the cold dark matter. These particles could be detected through their mixing with photons in external electromagnetic fields. Here, we provide a short review over ALP searches that utilize astrophysical $γ$-ray observations. We summarize current bounds as well as future sensitivities and discuss the possibility that ALPs alter the $γ$-ray opacity of the Universe.
Cosmic ray protons propagating in a spatially-homogeneous but time-dependent field of axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) emit photons in a way that is reminiscent of Cherenkov radiation by charged particles in a preferred background. We compute the emission rate and energy spectrum of the photons, and discuss the possibility of their detection using the Square Kilometre Array which is currently under construction. In the case of a non-detection, constraints can be placed on the parameter space of ALPs whose mass lie between $10^{-7}$eV and $10^{-5}$ eV under the assumption that they are the…
Neutron stars generally cools off by the emission of gamma rays and neutrinos. But axions can also be produced inside a neutron star by the process of nucleon-nucleon axion bremsstrahlung. The escape of these axions adds to the cooling process of neutron star. We explore the nature of cooling of neutron stars including the axion emission and compare our result with the scenario when the neutron star is cooled by only the emission of gamma rays and neutrinos. In our calculations we consider both the degenerate and non-degenerate limits for such axion energy loss rate and the resulting variation…
G. Galanti and M .Roncadelli recently made public some comments on the article by D. Wouters and P. Brun about irregularities induced by photon mixing to axion-like particles in astrophysical media [Phys. Rev. D86, 043005 (2012)]. They claim in particular to have found some mistakes in the article. This note is a response to their comments, we refute their arguments and show that the results presented in the article are correct. It turns out most of the misunderstandings come from the definition of the beam initial state, some clarifications about which are given here.
We revise gamma-ray limits on axion-like particles (ALPs) emitted from supernova SN1987A based on Solar Maximum Mission data. We improve and simplify the computation of the expected gamma-ray signal from ALP decays, while also extending it to non-instantaneous ALP emission. For the first time we make use of the temporal information in the data to update the associated ALP-photon coupling limits. For ALP decays, our updated likelihood only mildly affects the limit compared to previous works due to the absorption of gamma rays close to SN1987A. However, for ALP conversions in the Galactic magnet…
In this mini-review, possible manifestations of mixing between axion-like particles (ALPs) and energetic photons propagating over astronomical distances are considered. We discuss the evidence for the anomalous transparency of the Universe from observations of ensembles of distant gamma-ray sources, present the general formalism for the ALP-photon mixing and explain how this mechanism may remove the anomaly. We present relevant values of ALP parameters and discuss future ways to verify the scenario and to discover the particle in question.
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are a common prediction of certain theories beyond the Standard Model and couple to photons in the presence of external magnetic fields. As a consequence, photon-ALP conversions could lead to an enhancement of the flux of extragalactic gamma-ray sources that is otherwise attenuated due to the interactions with background radiation fields. The magnetic fields traversed by the gamma rays are often turbulent and frequently modelled with a simple domain-like structure. Given a maximum mixing between photons and ALPs, we show that in such models realisations of the field…
The observation of cosmic sub-PeV gamma-rays from the Crab Nebula opens up the possibility of testing cosmic ray photon transparency at the multi-hundred TeV scale. Assuming no deviation from a source gamma-ray emission due to accelerated electron inverse-Compton scattering, higher event energies can extend constraints on the effects of new physics; We consider oscillation between gamma-rays and axions/dark photons, plus attenuation effects from gamma-ray absorption in the case of dark photon dark matter. Combining the recent AS$γ$ and HAWC sub-PeV data with earlier MAGIC and HEGRA data, axion…
Existing searches for cosmic axions relics have relied heavily on the axion being non-relativistic and making up dark matter. However, light axions can be copiously produced in the early Universe and remain relativistic today, thereby constituting a Cosmic $\textit{axion}$ Background (C$a$B). As prototypical examples of axion sources, we consider thermal production, dark-matter decay, parametric resonance, and topological defect decay. Each of these has a characteristic frequency spectrum that can be searched for in axion direct detection experiments. We focus on the axion-photon coupling and …
In a previous work we investigated the propagation of fast moving charged particles in a spatially constant but slowly time dependent pseudoscalar background, such as the one provided by cold relic axions. The background induces cosmic rays to radiate in the low-energy spectrum. While the energy loss caused by this mechanism on the primary cosmic rays is negligible, we investigate the hypothetical detection of the photons radiated and how they could provide an indirect way of verifying the cosmological relevance of axions. Assuming that the cosmic ray flux is of the form J(E)~ E^-g we find tha…
Oscillations from high energy photons into light pseudoscalar particles in an external magnetic field are expected to occur in some extensions of the standard model. It is usually assumed that those axionlike particles (ALPs) could produce a drop in the energy spectra of gamma ray sources and possibly decrease the opacity of the Universe for TeV gamma rays. We show here that these assumptions are in fact based on an average behavior that cannot happen in real observations of single sources. We propose a new method to search for photon-ALP oscillations, taking advantage of the fact that a singl…
Axions have for some time been considered a plausible candidate for dark matter. They can be produced through misalignment, but it has been argued that when inflation occurs before a Peccei-Quinn transition, appreciable production can result from cosmic strings. This has been the subject of extensive simulations. But there are reasons to be skeptical about the possible role of axion strings. We review and elaborate on these questions, and argue that parametrically strings are already accounted for by the assumption of random misalignment angles. We review and elaborate on these questions, and …
Coupling of axion-like particles (ALPs) to photons in the presence of background magnetic field affects propagation of gamma-rays through magnetized environments. This results in modification in the gamma-ray spectra of sources in or behind galaxy clusters. We search for the ALP induced effects in the Fermi/LAT and MAGIC telescope spectra of the radio galaxy NGC 1275 embedded in Perseus galaxy cluster. We report an order-of-magnitude improved upper limit on the ALP-photon coupling constant in the 0.1-10 neV mass range from non-detection of the ALP imprints on the gamma-ray spectra. The improve…
Very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays undergo pair production with low energy photons of background radiation fields. This leads to an attenuation of the primary gamma-ray flux of extragalactic sources in the interaction with the extragalactic background light (EBL) which stretches from ultraviolet to far-infrared wavelengths. In the presence of magnetic fields, gamma-rays could oscillate into hypothetical axion-like particles (ALPs). This might lead to a reduced opacity of the Universe for VHE gamma-rays, as ALPs circumvent pair production. Here, the impact of photon-ALP conversions on the spectr…
We show that axion-like particles that only couple to invisible dark photons can generate visible B-mode signals around the reionization epoch. The axion field starts rolling shortly before reionization, resulting in a tachyonic instability for the dark photons. This generates an exponential growth of the dark photon quanta sourcing both scalar metric modes and gravitational waves that leave an imprint on the reionized baryons. The tensor modes modify the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization at reionization, generating visible B-mode signatures for the next generation of CMB experime…
