Despite the coined quantum walk being a closed quantum system under a unitary evolution, its Hilbert space can be divided in two sub-spaces, which makes it possible for one to analyze one of the subsystems (the coin or the walker) as an open system in contact with a reservoir. In the present work we calculate the asymptotic reduced density matrix of the coin space of the three-state quantum walk in an infinite line, and use that result to analyze the entanglement between the chirality, and position space. We calculate the von Neumann entropy and the entanglement temperature per mean energy of the system in the asymptotic limit.
The definition of entanglement temperature for the quantum walk on the line is extended to $N$-cycles, which are more amenable to a physical implementation. We show that, for these systems, there is a linear connection between the thermalization time and the mixing time, and also that these characteristic times become insensitive to the system size when $N$ is larger than a few units
A thermodynamic theory is developed to describe the behavior of the entanglement between the coin and position degrees of freedom of the quantum walk on the line. This theory shows that, in spite of the unitary evolution, a steady state is established after a Markovian transient stage. This study suggests that if a quantum dynamics is developed in a composite Hilbert space (i.e. the tensor product of several sub-spaces) then the behavior of an operator that only belongs to one of the sub-spaces may camouflage the unitary character of the global evolution.
We obtain stationary measures for the one-dimensional three-state Grover walk with one defect by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. We clarify a relation between stationary and limit measures of the walk.
In this paper, we consider stationary measures of discrete-time three-state quantum walks including the Fourier and Grover walks in the one-dimensional lattice. We give non-uniform stationary measures by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. Our new method is based on a reduced matrix, which is different from the generating function approach in our previous work. As a corollary, the Fourier walk on the cycle has a stationary measure with a periodicity.
We analyze the role of dimensionality in the time evolution of discrete time quantum walks through the example of the three-state walk on a two-dimensional, triangular lattice. We show that the three-state Grover walk does not lead to trapping (localization) or recurrence to the origin, in sharp contrast to the Grover walk on the two dimensional square lattice. We determine the power law scaling of the probability at the origin with the method of stationary phase. We prove that only a special subclass of coin operators can lead to recurrence and there are no coins leading to localization. The …
Evolution operators of certain quantum walks possess, apart from the continuous part, also point spectrum. The existence of eigenvalues and the corresponding stationary states lead to partial trapping of the walker in the vicinity of the origin. We analyze the stability of this feature for three-state quantum walks on a line subject to homogenous coin deformations. We find two classes of coin operators that preserve the point spectrum. These new classes of coins are generalizations of coins found previously by different methods and shed light on the rich spectrum of coins that can drive discre…
Open quantum walks (OQWs) are a new type of quantum walks which are entirely driven by the dissipative interaction with external environments and are formulated as completely positive trace-preserving maps on graphs. A generalized quantum optical scheme for implementing OQWs that includes non-zero temperature of the environment is suggested. In the proposed quantum optical scheme, a two-level atom plays the role of the "walker", and the Fock states of the cavity mode correspond to the lattice sites for the "walker". Using the small unitary rotations approach the effective dynamics of the syste…
Quantum walks are dynamic systems with a wide range of applications in quantum computation and quantum simulation of analog systems, therefore it is of common interest to understand what changes from an isolated process to one embedded in an environment. In the present work, we analyze the decoherence in a three-state uni-dimensional quantum walk. The approaches taken into consideration to account for the environment effects are phase and amplitude damping Kraus operators, unitary noise on the coin space, and broken links.
From the unitary operator used for implementing two-state discrete-time quantum walk on one-, two- and three- dimensional lattice we obtain a two-component Dirac-like Hamiltonian. In particular, using different pairs of Pauli basis as position translation states we obtain three different form of Hamiltonians for evolution on one-dimensional lattice. We extend this to two- and three-dimensional lattices using different Pauli basis states as position translation states for each dimension and show that the external coin operation, which is necessary for one-dimensional walk is not a necessary req…
We study a generalized Hadamard walk in one dimension with three inner states. The particle governed by the three-state quantum walk moves, in superposition, both to the left and to the right according to the inner state. In addition to these two degrees of freedom, it is allowed to stay at the same position. We calculate rigorously the wavefunction of the particle starting from the origin for any initial qubit state, and show the spatial distribution of probability of finding the particle. In contrast with the Hadamard walk with two inner states on a line, the probability of finding the parti…
The entanglement between the position and coin state of a $N$-dimensional quantum walker is shown to lead to a thermodynamic theory. The entropy, in this thermodynamics, is associated to the reduced density operator for the evolution of chirality, taking a partial trace over positions. From the asymptotic reduced density matrix it is possible to define thermodynamic quantities, such as the asymptotic entanglement entropy, temperature, Helmholz free energy, etc. We study in detail the case of a $2$-dimensional quantum walk, in the case of two different initial conditions: a non-separable coin-p…
Based on the three-level quantum system, when it is in resonance, according to any two lattice points closest to Hamiltonian coupling, electrons transition from high energy level to low energy level and release photons; Or absorb photons and transition from low energy level to high energy level, thus obtaining the physical process of quantum walking along a straight line under the condition of equal probability. Then, the optical radiation in the quantum walk is mapped into a Gaussian pulse of the electric field, and the Maxwell's equation is solved by the three dimensional finite-difference t…
We present an entanglement swapping process for unknown nonmaximally entangled photonic states, where the standard Bell-state measurement is replaced by a three-step quantum walk-like state discrimination process, i.e., the practically nontrivial coupling element of two photons is replaced by manipulating their trajectories, which will greatly enrich the dynamics of the coupling between photons in realizing quantum computation, and reduce the integration complexity of optical quantum processing. In addition, the output state can be maximally entangled, which allows for entanglement concentrati…
We perform the fidelity analysis for Boltzmann-Gibbs-like states in order to investigate whether the topological order of 1D fermionic systems at zero temperature is maintained at finite temperatures. We use quantum walk protocols that are known to simulate topological phases and the respective quantum phase transitions for chiral symmetric Hamiltonians. Using the standard approaches of the fidelity analysis and the study of edge states, we conclude that no thermal-like phase transitions occur as temperature increases, i.e., the topological behaviour is washed out gradually. We also show that …
We analyze two families of three-state quantum walks which show the localization effect. We focus on the role of the initial coin state and its coherence in controlling the properties of the quantum walk. In particular, we show that the description of the walk simplifies considerably when the initial coin state is decomposed in the basis formed by the eigenvectors of the coin operator. This allows us to express the limit distributions in a much more convenient form. Consequently, striking features which are hidden in the standard basis description are easily identified. Moreover, the dependenc…
The dynamics of a three-state quantum walk with amplitude-dependent phase shifts is investigated. We consider two representative inputs whose linear evolution is known to display either full dispersion of the wave packet or intrinsic localization on the initial position. The nonlinear counterpart presents much more involved dynamics featuring self-trapping, solitonic pulses, radiation, and chaotic-like behavior. We show that nonlinearity leads to a metastable self-trapped wavepacket component that radiates in the long-time regime with the survival probability $\propto t^{-1/2}$. A sudden dynam…
We calculated reduced density characteristic matrix (RDCM) for quantum walk on cycles (QWC) to study asymptotic properties of the most general form of quantum walk on cycles with general $U(2)$ coin operator. As an example, entanglement temperature for general initial state has been calculated and compared to previous results. Also, we have modified RDCM to derive analytical expression for general form of limiting distribution (LD).
Quantum walks play an important role for developing quantum algorithms and quantum simulations. Here we present one dimensional three-state quantum walk(lazy quantum walk) and show its equivalence for circuit realization in ternary quantum logic for the first of its kind. Using an appropriate logical mapping of the position space on which a walker evolves onto the multi-qutrit states, we present efficient quantum circuits considering the nearest neighbour position space for the implementation of lazy quantum walks in one-dimensional position space in ternary quantum system. We also address sca…
Quantum walks of interacting particles may display non-trivial features due to the interplay between the statistical nature and the many-body interactions associated to them. We analyze the quantum walk of interacting defects on top of an uniform bosonic Mott insulator at unit filling in an one dimensional graph. While the quantum walk of single particle defect shows trivial features, the case of two particles exhibits interesting phenomenon of quantum walk reversal as a function of additional onsite three-body attractive interactions. In the absence of the three-body interaction a quantum wal…
In recent years, new neural network architectures designed to operate on graph-structured data have pushed the state-of-the-art in the field. A large set of these architectures utilize a form of classical random walks to diffuse information. We propose quantum walk neural networks (QWNN), a novel graph neural network architecture based on quantum random walks, the quantum parallel to classical random walks. A QWNN learns a quantum walk on a graph to construct a diffusion operator which can then be applied to graph-structured data. We demonstrate the use of QWNNs on a variety of prediction task…
We perform a finite-time scaling analysis over the detrapping point of a three-state quantum walk on the line. The coin operator is parameterized by $ρ$ that controls the wavepacket spreading velocity. The input state prepared at the origin is set as symmetric linear combination of two eigenstates of the coin operator with a characteristic mixing angle $θ$, one of them being the component that results in full spreading occurring at $θ_c(ρ)$ for which no fraction of the wavepacket remains trapped near the initial position. We show that relevant quantities such as the survival probability and th…
We investigate the quantum dynamics of particles on graphs ("quantum random walks"), with the aim of developing quantum algorithms for determining if two graphs are isomorphic (related to each other by a relabeling of vertices). We focus on quantum random walks of multiple non-interacting particles on strongly regular graphs (SRGs), a class of graphs with high symmetry that is known to have pairs of graphs that are hard to distinguish. Previous work has already demonstrated analytically that two-particle non-interacting quantum walks cannot distinguish non-isomorphic SRGs of the same family. H…
Out-of time-ordered correlators (OTOC) have recently attracted significant attention from the physics of many-body systems, to quantum black-holes, with an exponential growth of the OTOC indicating quantum chaos. Here we consider OTOC in the context of coined discrete quantum walks, a very well studied model of quantization of classical random walks with applications to quantum algorithms. Three separate cases of operators, variously localized in the coin and walker spaces, are discussed in this context and it is found that the approximated behavior of the OTOCs is well described by simple alg…
We present a new scheme for a discrete-time quantum walk on two- and three-dimensional lattices using a two-state particle. We use different Pauli basis as translational eigestates for different axis and show that the coin operation, which is necessary for one-dimensional walk is not a necessary requirement for two- and three- dimensional walk but can serve as an additional resource. Using this scheme, the probability distribution from Grover walk using four-state particle and other equivalent schemes on a square lattice using coin operation is reproduced. We also present the Hamiltonian form …
The finite dihedral group generated by one rotation and one reflection is the simplest case of the non-abelian group. Cayley graphs are diagrammatic counterparts of groups. In this paper, much attention is given to the Cayley graph of the dihedral group. Considering the characteristics of the elements in the dihedral group, we propose a model of three-state discrete-time quantum walk (DTQW) on the Caylay graph of the dihedral group with Grover coin. We derive analytic expressions for the the position probability distribution and the long-time limit of the return probability starting from the o…
We propose a novel implementation of discrete time quantum walks for a neutral atom in an array of optical microtraps or an optical lattice. We analyze a one-dimensional walk in position space, with the coin, the additional qubit degree of freedom that controls the displacement of the quantum walker, implemented as a spatially delocalized qubit, i.e., the coin is also encoded in position space. We analyze the dependence of the quantum walk on temperature and experimental imperfections as shaking in the trap positions. Finally, combining a spatially delocalized qubit and a hyperfine qubit, we a…
We investigate quantum entanglement of three photons performing discrete-time quantum walk (DTQW) on the nearest-neighbor sites of a square lattice. Such a DTQW setup has already been proposed to be realizable using linear optical elements. Each lattice site corresponds to the sequential action of a half-wave plate and a polarizing beam splitter. Two-dimensional DTQW can be mapped to an effective one-dimensional DTQW with a four-sided coin that depends on the polarization and direction of motion of the photons. It is known that such a system is capable to spatially entangle two photons, prepar…
A simple coined quantum walk in one dimension can be characterized by a $SU(2)$ operator with three parameters which represents the coin toss. However, different such coin toss operators lead to equivalent dynamics of the quantum walker. In this manuscript we present the unitary equivalence classes of quantum walks and show that all the nonequivalent quantum walks can be distinguished by a single parameter. Moreover, we argue that the electric quantum walks are equivalent to quantum walks with time dependent coin toss operator.
We obtain some rigorous results on limit theorems for quantum walks driven by many coins introduced by Brun et al. in the long time limit. The results imply that whether the behavior of a particle is quantum or classical depends on the three factors: the initial qubit, the number of coins M, d= [t/M], where t is time step. Our main theorem shows that we can see a transition from classical behavior to quantum one for a class of three factors.
We study quantum walks through chains consisting of two and three star graphs. The first star has a distinguished vertex labelled START and the last has one labelled END. There are multiple paths between these two vertices, and the object is to find these paths. We show that a quantum walk can do this with a quantum speedup.
A quantum walk, \emph{i.e.}, the quantum evolution of a particle on a graph, is termed \emph{scalar} if the internal space of the moving particle (often called the coin) has a dimension one. Here, we study the existence of scalar quantum walks on Cayley graphs, which are built from the generators of a group. After deriving a necessary condition on these generators for the existence of a scalar quantum walk, we present a general method to express the evolution operator of the walk, assuming homogeneity of the evolution. We use this necessary condition and the subsequent constructive method to i…
Generation of entangled state is of paramount importance both from quantum theoretical foundation and technology applications. Entanglement swapping provides an efficient method to generate entanglement in quantum communication protocols. However, perfect Bell measurements for qudits, the key to entanglement swapping, have been proven impossible to achieve by using only linear elements and particle detectors. To avoid this bottleneck, we propose a novel scheme to generate entangled state including two-qubit entangled state, two-qudit entangled state, three-qubit GHZ state and three-qudit GHZ s…
In this article, we undertake a detailed study of the limiting behavior of a three-state discrete-time quantum walk on one dimensional lattice with generalized Grover coins. Two limit theorems are proved and consequently we show that the quantum walk exhibits localization at its initial position, for a wide range of coin parameters. Finally, we discuss the effect of the coin parameters on the peak velocities of probability distributions of the underlying quantum walks.
We simulate dynamics of many-particle systems of bosons and fermions using discrete time quantum walks on lattices. We present a computational proof of a behavior of the simulated systems similar to the one observed in Hamiltonian dynamics during quantum thermalization. We record the time evolution of the entropy and the temperature of a specific particle configuration during the entire dynamics and observe how they relax to a state we call quantum walks thermal state. This observation is made on two types of lattices while simulating different numbers of particles walking on two grid graphs w…
We study the simulation of the topological phases in three subsequent dimensions with quantum walks. We are mainly focused on the completion of a table for the protocols of the quantum walk that could simulate different family of the topological phases in one, two dimensions and take the first initiatives to build necessary protocols for three-dimensional cases. We also highlight the possible boundary states that can be observed for each protocol in different dimensions and extract the conditions for their emergences or absences. To further enrich the simulation of the topological phenomenas, …
A two-dimensional discrete-time quantum walk (DTQW) can be realized by alternating a two-state DTQW in one spatial dimension followed by an evolution in the other dimension. This was shown to reproduce a probability distribution for a certain configuration of a four-state DTQW on a two-dimensional lattice. In this work we present a three-state alternate DTQW with a parameterized coin-flip operator and show that it can produce localization that is also observed for a certain other configuration of the four-state DTQW and non-reproducible using the two-state alternate DTQW. We will present two l…
Mathematical analysis on the existence of eigenvalues is essential because it is equivalent to the occurrence of localization, which is an exceptionally crucial property of quantum walks. We construct the method for the eigenvalue problem via the transfer matrix for space-inhomogeneous $n$-state quantum walks in one dimension with $n-2$ self-loops, which is an extension of the technique in a previous study (Quantum Inf. Process 20(5), 2021). This method reveals the necessary and sufficient condition for the eigenvalue problem of a two-phase three-state quantum walk with one defect whose time e…
Playing a Parrondo's game with a qutrit is the subject of this paper. We show that a true quantum Parrondo's game can be played with a 3 state coin(qutrit) in a 1D quantum walk in contrast to the fact that playing a true Parrondo's game with a 2 state coin(qubit) in 1D quantum walk fails in the asymptotic limits.
Graph representations are a powerful concept for solving complex problems across natural science, as patterns of connectivity can give rise to a multitude of emergent phenomena. Graph-based approaches have proven particularly fruitful in quantum communication and quantum search algorithms in highly branched quantum networks. Here we introduce a new paradigm for the direct experimental realization of excitation dynamics associated with three-dimensional networks by exploiting the hybrid action of spatial and polarization degrees of freedom of photon pairs in complex waveguide circuits with tail…
We formulate three current models of discrete-time quantum walks in a combinatorial way. These walks are shown to be closely related to rotation systems and 1-factorizations of graphs. For two of the models, we compute the traces and total entropies of the average mixing matrices for some cubic graphs. The trace captures how likely a quantum walk is to revisit the state it started with, and the total entropy measures how close the limiting distribution is to uniform. Our numerical results indicate three relations between quantum walks and graph structures: for the first model, rotation systems…
We explore the notion of generated entropy in open quantum systems. We focus on the study of the discrete-time quantum walk on the line, from the entropy production perspective. We argue that the evolution of the coin can be modeled as an open two-level system that exchanges energy with the lattice at some effective temperature that depends on the initial state. The entropy balance shows that there is a positive entropy production during the evolution, in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics.
Quantum walks behave differently from what we expect and their probability distributions have unique structures. They have localization, singularities, a gap, and so on. Those features have been discovered from the view point of mathematics and reported as limit theorems. In this paper we focus on a time-dependent three-state quantum walk on the line and demonstrate a limit distribution. Three coin states at each position are iteratively updated by a coin-flip operator and a position-shift operator. As the result of the evolution, we end up to observe both localization and a gap in the limit d…
Here we present neutrino oscillation in the frame-work of quantum walks. Starting from a one spatial dimensional discrete-time quantum walk we present a scheme of evolutions that will simulate neutrino oscillation. The set of quantum walk parameters which is required to reproduce the oscillation probability profile obtained in both, long range and short range neutrino experiment is explicitly presented. Our scheme to simulate three-generation neutrino oscillation from quantum walk evolution operators can be physically realized in any low energy experimental set-up with access to control a sing…
The time-evolution equation of a one-dimensional quantum walker is exactly mapped to the three-dimensional Weyl equation for a zero-mass particle with spin 1/2, in which each wave number k of walker's wave function is mapped to a point \vec{q}(k) in the three-dimensional momentum space and \vec{q}(k) makes a planar orbit as k changes its value in [-π, π). The integration over k providing the real-space wave function for a quantum walker corresponds to considering an orbital state of a Weyl particle, which is defined as a superposition (curvilinear integration) of the energy-momentum eigenstate…
