We call $i$ a fixed point of a given sequence if the value of that sequence at the $i$-th position coincides with $i$. Here, we enumerate fixed points in the class of restricted growth sequences. The counting process is conducted by calculation of generating functions and leveraging a probabilistic sampling method.
We consider two order relations: that induced by the m-ary reflected Gray code and a suffix partitioned variation of it. We show that both of them when applied to some sets of restricted growth sequences still yield Gray codes. These sets of sequences are: subexcedant or ascent sequences, restricted growth functions, and staircase words. In each case we give efficient exhaustive generating algorithms and compare the obtained results.
A Gray code for a combinatorial class is a method for listing the objects in the class so that successive objects differ in some prespecified, small way, typically expressed as a bounded Hamming distance. In a previous work, the authors of the present paper showed, among other things, that the $m$-ary Reflected Gray Code Order yields a Gray code for the set of restricted growth functions. Here we further investigate variations of this order relation, and give the first Gray codes and efficient generating algorithms for bounded restricted growth functions.
In this undergraduate thesis, we expand on the study of statistics on restricted growth functions avoiding patterns initiated by Campbell, et. al. Restricted growth functions are of interest because they are in bijection with set partitions. We examine the case when a restricted growth function contains a pattern exactly $k$ times, where $k=0$ corresponds to pattern avoidance. We prove results for several statistic and pattern combinations in the case when $k=1$ and define a new type of Wilf equivalence for these patterns. We also examine a poset related to $M(n)$, the poset of integer partiti…
We study the rate of growth of $p(n,S,M)$, the number of partitions of $n$ whose parts all belong to $S$ and whose multiplicities all belong to $M$, where $S$ (resp. $M$) are given infinite sets of positive (resp. nonnegative) integers. We show that if $M$ is all nonnegative integers then $p(n,S,M)$ cannot be of only polynomial growth, and that no sharper statement can be made. We ask: if $p(n,S,M)>0$ for all large enough $n$, can $p(n,S,M)$ be of polynomial growth in $n$?
A restricted growth function (RGF) of length n is a sequence w = w_1 w_2 ... w_n of positive integers such that w_1 = 1 and w_i is at most 1 + max{w_1,..., w_{i-1}} for i at least 2. RGFs are of interest because they are in natural bijection with set partitions of {1, 2, ..., n}. RGF w avoids RGF v if there is no subword of w which standardizes to v. We study the generating functions sum_{w in R_n(v)} q^{st(w)} where R_n(v) is the set of RGFs of length n which avoid v and st(w) is any of the four fundamental statistics on RGFs defined by Wachs and White. These generating functions exhibit inte…
We study the distributional properties of horizontal visibility graphs associated with random restrictive growth sequences and random set partitions of size $n.$ Our main results are formulas expressing the expected degree of graph nodes in terms of simple explicit functions of a finite collection of Stirling and Bernoulli numbers.
We provide a bijective proof of a formula of Auli and the author expressing the number of inversion sequences with no three consecutive equal entries in terms of the number of non-derangements, that is, permutations with fixed points. Additionally, we give bijective proofs of two simple recurrences for the number of non-derangements.
In this paper we prove that among the permutations of length n with i fixed points and j excedances, the number of 321-avoiding ones equals the number of 132-avoiding ones, for all given i,j<=n. We use a new technique involving diagonals of non-rational generating functions. This theorem generalizes a recent result of Robertson, Saracino and Zeilberger, for which we also give another, more direct proof.

Define $S_n^k(T)$ to be the set of permutations of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ with exactly $k$ fixed points which avoid all patterns in $T \subseteq S_m$. We enumerate $S_n^k(T)$, $T \subseteq S_3$, for all $|T| \geq 2$ and $0 \leq k \leq n$.
We present a bijection between 321- and 132-avoiding permutations that preserves the number of fixed points and the number of excedances. This gives a simple combinatorial proof of recent results of Robertson, Saracino and Zeilberger, and the first author. We also show that our bijection preserves additional statistics, which extends the previous results.
We count orientations of $G(n,p)$ avoiding certain classes of oriented graphs. In particular, we study $T_r(n,p)$, the number of orientations of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ in which every copy of $K_r$ is transitive, and $S_r(n,p)$, the number of orientations of $G(n,p)$ containing no strongly connected copy of $K_r$. We give the correct order of growth of $\log T_r(n,p)$ and $\log S_r(n,p)$ up to polylogarithmic factors; for orientations with no cyclic triangle, this significantly improves a result of Allen, Kohayakawa, Mota and Parente. We also discuss the problem for a single forbidd…
Define $S_n^k(α)$ to be the set of permutations of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ with exactly $k$ fixed points which avoid the pattern $α\in S_m$. Let $s_n^k(α)$ be the size of $S_n^k(α)$. We investigate $S_n^0(α)$ for all $α\in S_3$ as well as show that $s_n^k(132)=s_n^k(213)=s_n^k(321)$ and $s_n^k(231)=s_n^k(312)$ for all $0 \leq k \leq n$.
Define $I_n^k(α)$ to be the set of involutions of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ with exactly $k$ fixed points which avoid the pattern $α\in S_i$, for some $i \geq 2$, and define $I_n^k(\emptyset;α)$ to be the set of involutions of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ with exactly $k$ fixed points which contain the pattern $α\in S_i$, for some $i \geq 2$, exactly once. Let $i_n^k(α)$ be the number of elements in $I_n^k(α)$ and let $i_n^k(\emptyset;α)$ be the number of elements in $I_n^k(\emptyset;α)$. We investigate $I_n^k(α)$ and $I_n^k(\emptyset;α)$ for all $α\in S_3$. In particular, we show that $i_n^k(132)=i_n^k(213)=i_n^k(3…
We study generating functions for the number of involutions in $S_n$ avoiding (or containing once) 132, and avoiding (or containing once) an arbitrary permutation $τ$ on $k$ letters. In several interesting cases the generating function depends only on $k$ and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. In particular, we establish that involutions avoiding both 132 and $12... k$ have the same enumerative formula according to the length than involutions avoiding both 132 and any {\em double-wedge pattern} possibly followed by fixed points of total length $k$. Many results are also…
We use Naito-Sagaki's work [S. Naito & D. Sagaki, J. Algebra 245 (2001) 395--412, J. Algebra 251 (2002) 461--474] on Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths fixed by diagram automorphisms to study the partitions fixed by Mullineux involution. We characterize the set of Mullineux-fixed partitions in terms of crystal graphs of basic representations of twisted affine Lie algebras of type $A_{2\ell}^{(2)}$ and of type $D_{\ell+1}^{(2)}$. We set up bijections between the set of symmetric partitions and the set of partitions into distinct parts. We propose a notion of double restricted strict partitions. Bijectio…
In this paper we study different restrictions imposed over the set of permutations of size $n$, $S_n$, and for specific classes of restrictions study the cycle structure of corresponding permutations. More specifically, we prove that for any fixed positive integer $k$, the number of $k$-cycles of a uniformly chosen permutation $π\in S_n$ with the restriction "$π(i) \geq i-1$" for $i \in \{2, \ldots, n\}$ has a Normal asymptotic distribution. We further prove that this result translates into CLTs regarding multiplicities of fixed-size parts of a uniformly selected composition of $n$.
Let $\mathcal{A}=(a_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}_+}$ be a sequence of positive integers. Let $p_\mathcal{A}(n,k)$ denote the number of multi-color partitions of $n$ into parts in $\{a_1,\ldots,a_k\}$. We examine several arithmetic properties of the sequence $(p_\mathcal{A}(n,k) \pmod{m})_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ for an arbitrary fixed integer $m\geqslant2$. We investigate periodicity of the sequence and lower and upper bounds for the density of the set $\{n\in\mathbb{N}: p_\mathcal{A}(n,k) \equiv i \pmod{m}\}$ for a fixed positive integer $k$ and $i\in\{0,1,\ldots, m-1\}$. In particular, we apply our results t…
A Gray code is a listing structure for a set of combinatorial objects such that some consistent (usually minimal) change property is maintained throughout adjacent elements in the list. While Gray codes for m-ary strings have been considered in the past, we provide a new, simple Gray code for fixed-weight m-ary strings. In addition, we consider a relatively new type of Gray code known as overlap cycles and prove basic existence results concerning overlap cycles for fixed-weight and weight-range m-ary words.
The mean values of non-homogeneously parameterized generating exponential are obtained and investigated for the periodic Heisenberg XX model. The norm-trace generating function of boxed plane partitions with fixed volume of their diagonal parts is obtained as N-particles average of the generating exponential. The generating function of self-avoiding walks of random turns vicious walkers is obtained in terms of the circulant matrices that leads to generalizations of the Ramus's identity. Under various specifications of the generating exponential, the N-particles averages arise for a set of inco…
Denote by an $l$-component a connected graph with $l$ edges more than vertices. We prove that the expected number of creations of $(l+1)$-component, by means of adding a new edge to an $l$-component in a randomly growing graph with $n$ vertices, tends to 1 as $l,n$ tends to $\infty$ but with $l = o(n^{1/4})$. We also show, under the same conditions on $l$ and $n$, that the expected number of vertices that ever belong to an $l$-component is $\sim (12l)^{1/3} n^{2/3}$.
We prove a variant of the multidimensional polynomial Szemerédi theorem of Bergelson and Leibman where one replaces polynomial sequences with other sparse sequences defined by functions that belong to some Hardy field and satisfy certain growth conditions. We do this by studying the limiting behavior of the corresponding multiple ergodic averages and obtaining a simple limit formula. A consequence of this formula in topological dynamics shows denseness of certain orbits when the iterates are restricted to suitably chosen sparse subsequences. Another consequence is that every syndetic set of in…
The sum formula for finite and symmetric multiple zeta values, established by Wakabayashi and the authors, implies that if the weight and depth are fixed and the specified component is required to be more than one, then the values sum up to a rational multiple of the analogue of the Riemann zeta value. We prove that the result remains true if we further demand that the component should be more than two or that another component should also be more than one.
For a finite set $A\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, let $Δ(A)$ denote the spread of $A$, which is the ratio of the maximum pairwise distance to the minimum pairwise distance. For a positive integer $n$, let $γ_d(n)$ denote the largest integer such that any set $A$ of $n$ points in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$, satisfying $Δ(A) \leq αn^{1/d}$ for a fixed $α>0$, contains at least $γ_d(n)$ points in convex position. About $30$ years ago, Valtr proved that $γ_2(n)=Θ(n^{1/3})$. Since then no further results have been obtained in higher dimensions. Here we continue this line of research in three dimensi…
A common tool in the theory of numerical semigroups is to interpret a desired class of semigroups as the integer lattice points in a rational polyhedron in order to leverage computational and enumerative techniques from polyhedral geometry. Most arguments of this type make use of a parametrization of numerical semigroups with fixed multiplicity $m$ in terms of their $m$-Apéry sets, giving a representation called Kunz coordinates which obey a collection of inequalities defining the Kunz polyhedron. In this work, we introduce a new class of polyhedra describing numerical semigroups in terms of a…
The main purpose of this paper is to prove that the Bruhat-Chevalley ordering of the symmetric group when restricted to the fixed-point-free involutions forms an $EL$-shellable poset whose order complex triangulates a ball. Another purpose of this article is to prove that the Deodhar-Srinivasan poset is a proper, graded subposet of the Bruhat-Chevalley poset on fixed-point-free involutions.
