We propose Mask Guided (MG) Matting, a robust matting framework that takes a general coarse mask as guidance. MG Matting leverages a network (PRN) design which encourages the matting model to provide self-guidance to progressively refine the uncertain regions through the decoding process. A series of guidance mask perturbation operations are also introduced in the training to further enhance its robustness to external guidance. We show that PRN can generalize to unseen types of guidance masks such as trimap and low-quality alpha matte, making it suitable for various application pipelines. In addition, we revisit the foreground color prediction problem for matting and propose a surprisingly simple improvement to address the dataset issue. Evaluation on real and synthetic benchmarks shows that MG Matting achieves state-of-the-art performance using various types of guidance inputs. Code and models are available at https://github.com/yucornetto/MGMatting.
Recently, significant progress has been achieved in deep image matting. Most of the classical image matting methods are time-consuming and require an ideal trimap which is difficult to attain in practice. A high efficient image matting method based on a weakly annotated mask is in demand for mobile applications. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on Deep Learning and Guided Filter, called Inductive Guided Filter, which can tackle the real-time general image matting task on mobile devices. We design a lightweight hourglass network to parameterize the original Guided Filter method th…

Most matting researches resort to advanced semantics to achieve high-quality alpha mattes, and direct low-level features combination is usually explored to complement alpha details. However, we argue that appearance-agnostic integration can only provide biased foreground details and alpha mattes require different-level feature aggregation for better pixel-wise opacity perception. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end Hierarchical and Progressive Attention Matting Network (HAttMatting++), which can better predict the opacity of the foreground from single RGB images without additional input. S…
We design a real-time portrait matting pipeline for everyday use, particularly for "virtual backgrounds" in video conferences. Existing segmentation and matting methods prioritize accuracy and quality over throughput and efficiency, and our pipeline enables trading off a controllable amount of accuracy for better throughput by leveraging online distillation on the input video stream. We construct our own dataset of simulated video calls in various scenarios, and show that our approach delivers a 5x speedup over a saliency detection based pipeline in a non-GPU accelerated setting while deliveri…
This paper addresses the problem of transparent object matting. Existing image matting approaches for transparent objects often require tedious capturing procedures and long processing time, which limit their practical use. In this paper, we first formulate transparent object matting as a refractive flow estimation problem. We then propose a deep learning framework, called TOM-Net, for learning the refractive flow. Our framework comprises two parts, namely a multi-scale encoder-decoder network for producing a coarse prediction, and a residual network for refinement. At test time, TOM-Net takes…
This paper proposes a deep learning based method for colored transparent object matting from a single image. Existing approaches for transparent object matting often require multiple images and long processing times, which greatly hinder their applications on real-world transparent objects. The recently proposed TOM-Net can produce a matte for a colorless transparent object from a single image in a single fast feed-forward pass. In this paper, we extend TOM-Net to handle colored transparent object by modeling the intrinsic color of a transparent object with a color filter. We formulate the pro…

Image matting refers to predicting the alpha values of unknown foreground areas from natural images. Prior methods have focused on propagating alpha values from known to unknown regions. However, not all natural images have a specifically known foreground. Images of transparent objects, like glass, smoke, web, etc., have less or no known foreground. In this paper, we propose a Transformer-based network, TransMatting, to model transparent objects with a big receptive field. Specifically, we redesign the trimap as three learnable tri-tokens for introducing advanced semantic features into the sel…

Cutting out and object and estimate its transparency mask is a key task in many applications. We take on the work on closed-form matting by Levin et al., that is used at the core of many matting techniques, and propose an alternative formulation that offers more flexible controls over the matting priors. We also show that this new approach is efficient at upscaling transparency maps from coarse estimates.
It is difficult to accurately label ambiguous and complex shaped targets manually by binary masks. The weakness of binary mask under-expression is highlighted in medical image segmentation, where blurring is prevalent. In the case of multiple annotations, reaching a consensus for clinicians by binary masks is more challenging. Moreover, these uncertain areas are related to the lesions' structure and may contain anatomical information beneficial to diagnosis. However, current studies on uncertainty mainly focus on the uncertainty in model training and data labels. None of them investigate the i…

In this paper, we propose the Matting Anything Model (MAM), an efficient and versatile framework for estimating the alpha matte of any instance in an image with flexible and interactive visual or linguistic user prompt guidance. MAM offers several significant advantages over previous specialized image matting networks: (i) MAM is capable of dealing with various types of image matting, including semantic, instance, and referring image matting with only a single model; (ii) MAM leverages the feature maps from the Segment Anything Model (SAM) and adopts a lightweight Mask-to-Matte (M2M) module to…
Three-dimensional (3D) images, such as CT, MRI, and PET, are common in medical imaging applications and important in clinical diagnosis. Semantic ambiguity is a typical feature of many medical image labels. It can be caused by many factors, such as the imaging properties, pathological anatomy, and the weak representation of the binary masks, which brings challenges to accurate 3D segmentation. In 2D medical images, using soft masks instead of binary masks generated by image matting to characterize lesions can provide rich semantic information, describe the structural characteristics of lesions…

Shadow removal is an essential task for scene understanding. Many studies consider only matching the image contents, which often causes two types of ghosts: color in-consistencies in shadow regions or artifacts on shadow boundaries. In this paper, we tackle these issues in two ways. First, to carefully learn the border artifacts-free image, we propose a novel network structure named the dual hierarchically aggregation network~(DHAN). It contains a series of growth dilated convolutions as the backbone without any down-samplings, and we hierarchically aggregate multi-context features for attenti…
Cutting out an object and estimating its opacity mask, known as image matting, is a key task in many image editing applications. Deep learning approaches have made significant progress by adapting the encoder-decoder architecture of segmentation networks. However, most of the existing networks only predict the alpha matte and post-processing methods must then be used to recover the original foreground and background colours in the transparent regions. Recently, two methods have shown improved results by also estimating the foreground colours, but at a significant computational and memory cost.…
Semantic human matting aims to estimate the per-pixel opacity of the foreground human regions. It is quite challenging and usually requires user interactive trimaps and plenty of high quality annotated data. Annotating such kind of data is labor intensive and requires great skills beyond normal users, especially considering the very detailed hair part of humans. In contrast, coarse annotated human dataset is much easier to acquire and collect from the public dataset. In this paper, we propose to use coarse annotated data coupled with fine annotated data to boost end-to-end semantic human matti…
Recently, flow-based frame interpolation methods have achieved great success by first modeling optical flow between target and input frames, and then building synthesis network for target frame generation. However, above cascaded architecture can lead to large model size and inference delay, hindering them from mobile and real-time applications. To solve this problem, we propose a novel Progressive Motion Context Refine Network (PMCRNet) to predict motion fields and image context jointly for higher efficiency. Different from others that directly synthesize target frame from deep feature, we ex…

Image matting is an important computer vision problem. Many existing matting methods require a hand-made trimap to provide auxiliary information, which is very expensive and limits the real world usage. Recently, some trimap-free methods have been proposed, which completely get rid of any user input. However, their performance lag far behind trimap-based methods due to the lack of guidance information. In this paper, we propose a matting method that use Flexible Guidance Input as user hint, which means our method can use trimap, scribblemap or clickmap as guidance information or even work with…
This paper describes a channel-selection approach for simplifying deep neural networks. Specifically, we propose a new type of generic network layer, called pruning layer, to seamlessly augment a given pre-trained model for compression. Each pruning layer, comprising $1 \times 1$ depth-wise kernels, is represented with a dual format: one is real-valued and the other is binary. The former enables a two-phase optimization process of network pruning to operate with an end-to-end differentiable network, and the latter yields the mask information for channel selection. Our method progressively perf…
In actual industrial production, the assessment of the steel plate welding effect is an important task, and the segmentation of the weld section is the basis of the assessment. This paper proposes an industrial weld segmentation network based on a deep learning semantic segmentation algorithm fused with heatmap detail guidance and Image Matting to solve the automatic segmentation problem of weld regions. In the existing semantic segmentation networks, the boundary information can be preserved by fusing the features of both high-level and low-level layers. However, this method can lead to insuf…
Depth maps are used in a wide range of applications from 3D rendering to 2D image effects such as Bokeh. However, those predicted by single image depth estimation (SIDE) models often fail to capture isolated holes in objects and/or have inaccurate boundary regions. Meanwhile, high-quality masks are much easier to obtain, using commercial auto-masking tools or off-the-shelf methods of segmentation and matting or even by manual editing. Hence, in this paper, we formulate a novel problem of mask-guided depth refinement that utilizes a generic mask to refine the depth prediction of SIDE models. Ou…

To defend against manipulation of image content, such as splicing, copy-move, and removal, we develop a Progressive Spatio-Channel Correlation Network (PSCC-Net) to detect and localize image manipulations. PSCC-Net processes the image in a two-path procedure: a top-down path that extracts local and global features and a bottom-up path that detects whether the input image is manipulated, and estimates its manipulation masks at multiple scales, where each mask is conditioned on the previous one. Different from the conventional encoder-decoder and no-pooling structures, PSCC-Net leverages feature…

We push forward neural network compression research by exploiting a novel challenging task of large-scale conditional generative adversarial networks (GANs) compression. To this end, we propose a gradually shrinking GAN (PPCD-GAN) by introducing progressive pruning residual block (PP-Res) and class-aware distillation. The PP-Res is an extension of the conventional residual block where each convolutional layer is followed by a learnable mask layer to progressively prune network parameters as training proceeds. The class-aware distillation, on the other hand, enhances the stability of training b…

Salient object detection(SOD) aims at locating the most significant object within a given image. In recent years, great progress has been made in applying SOD on many vision tasks. The depth map could provide additional spatial prior and boundary cues to boost the performance. Combining the depth information with image data obtained from standard visual cameras has been widely used in recent SOD works, however, introducing depth information in a suboptimal fusion strategy may have negative influence in the performance of SOD. In this paper, we discuss about the advantages of the so-called prog…

In this work, we present a novel and effective framework to facilitate object detection with the instance-level segmentation information that is only supervised by bounding box annotation. Starting from the joint object detection and instance segmentation network, we propose to recursively estimate the pseudo ground-truth object masks from the instance-level object segmentation network training, and then enhance the detection network with top-down segmentation feedbacks. The pseudo ground truth mask and network parameters are optimized alternatively to mutually benefit each other. To obtain th…

Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a novel minimally invasive treatment that is used to ablate intracranial structures to treat mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). Region of interest (ROI) segmentation before and after LITT would enable automated lesion quantification to objectively assess treatment efficacy. Deep learning techniques, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are state-of-the-art solutions for ROI segmentation, but require large amounts of annotated data during the training. However, collecting large datasets from emerging treatments such as LITT is impractical.…

Facial attribute editing aims to manipulate attributes on the human face, e.g., adding a mustache or changing the hair color. Existing approaches suffer from a serious compromise between correct attribute generation and preservation of the other information such as identity and background, because they edit the attributes in the imprecise area. To resolve this dilemma, we propose a progressive attention GAN (PA-GAN) for facial attribute editing. In our approach, the editing is progressively conducted from high to low feature level while being constrained inside a proper attribute area by an at…
Pathological lung segmentation (PLS) is an important, yet challenging, medical image application due to the wide variability of pathological lung appearance and shape. Because PLS is often a pre-requisite for other imaging analytics, methodological simplicity and generality are key factors in usability. Along those lines, we present a bottom-up deep-learning based approach that is expressive enough to handle variations in appearance, while remaining unaffected by any variations in shape. We incorporate the deeply supervised learning framework, but enhance it with a simple, yet effective, progr…

Weakly supervised methods usually generate localization results based on attention maps produced by classification networks. However, the attention maps exhibit the most discriminative parts of the object which are small and sparse. We propose to generate Self-produced Guidance (SPG) masks which separate the foreground, the object of interest, from the background to provide the classification networks with spatial correlation information of pixels. A stagewise approach is proposed to incorporate high confident object regions to learn the SPG masks. The high confident regions within attention m…
