We revisit previous determination of the strong coupling constant from moments of quarkonium correlators in (2+1)-flavor QCD. We use previously calculated moments obtained with Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action for five different quark masses and several lattice spacings. We perform a careful continuum extrapolations of the moments and from the comparison of these to the perturbative result we determine the QCD Lambda parameter, $Λ_{\overline{MS}}^{n_f=3}=332 \pm 17 \pm 2(scale)$ MeV. This corresponds to $α_s^{n_f=5}(μ=M_Z)=0.1177(12)$.
We study quarkonium correlators and spectral functions at zero and finite temperature using the anisotropic Fermilab lattice formulation with anisotropy xi=2 and 4. To control cutoff effects we use several different lattice spacings. The spectral functions were extracted from lattice correlators with Maximum Entropy Method based on a new algorithm. We find evidence for the survival of 1S quarkonium states in the deconfined medium till relatively high temperatures as well as for dissolution of 1P quarkonium states right above the deconfinement temperature.
We discuss the calculations of quarkonium spectral functions in potential models and their implications for the interpretation of the lattice data on quarkonium correlators. In particular, we find that melting of different quarkonium states does not lead to significant change in the Euclidean time correlators. The large change of the quarkonium correlators above deconfinement observed in the scalar and axial-vector channels appears to be due to the zero mode contribution.
Recently an electric and magnetic field correlator appearing in the description of the heavy quarkonium system was evaluated on the lattice. Here, we give a nonperturbative analytical evaluation of this field correlator using a dual description of long distance Yang--Mills theory and using the stochastic vacuum model. The two predictions are both compatible with lattice data but show a different dependence on the quark separation. We discuss the analytic results in relation to the lattice data.
I review the determination of the strong coupling constant from moments of quarkonium correlators calculated on the lattice. I discuss different sources of systematic errors in such calculations.
In the investigation of in-medium modifications of quarkonia and for determining heavy quark diffusion coefficients, correlation functions play a crucial role. For the first time we perform a continuum extrapolation of charmonium and bottomonium correlators in the vector channel based on non-perturbatively clover-improved Wilson fermions in quenched lattice QCD. Calculations were done at 4 different lattice spacings, spatial extents between 96 and 192, aspect ratio from 1/6 to 1/2, for 5 temperatures between $T/T_c = 0.75$ and $T/T_c = 2.2$. We interpolate between different quark masses to mat…
We discuss different static quark correlators, including Wilson loops in 2+1 flavor QCD at non-zero temperature and their relation to in-medium quarkonium properties. We present lattice results on static correlation functions obtained with highly improved staggered fermion action and their implications for potential models.
We calculate the low energy contribution to quarkonium correlators in Euclidean time in lattice QCD. This contribution was found to give the dominant source of the temperature dependence of the correlators. We have found that the low energy contribution is well described by a quasi-particle model and have determined the effective temperature dependent heavy quark mass.
I discuss the temperature dependence of quarkonium correlators calculated in lattice QCD. I show that the dominant source of the temperature dependence comes from the zero mode contribution, while the the temperature dependence associated with melting of bound states is quite small. I study the zero mode contribution quantitatively for different quark masses and show that it is well described by a quasi-particle model with temperature dependent heavy quark mass. As a byproduct an estimate of the medium dependence of the heavy quark mass is obtained.
We discuss the behavior of charmonia and bottomonia correlators and spectral functions above the deconfinement temperature and determine melting temperatures for different mesonic states.
We investigate the properties of heavy quarkonia at finite temperature in detail using QCD sum rules. Extending previous analyses, we take into account a temperature dependent effective continuum threshold and derive constraints on the mass, the width, and the varying effective continuum threshold. We find that at least one of these quantities of a charmonium changes abruptly in the vicinity of the phase transition. We also calculate the ratio of the imaginary time correlator to its reconstructed one, $G/G_{\text{rec}}$, by constructing a model spectral function and compare it to the correspon…
The pseudoscalar correlator is an ideal lattice probe for thermal modifications to quarkonium spectra, given that it is not compromised by a contribution from a large transport peak. We construct a perturbative spectral function incorporating resummed thermal effects around the threshold and vacuum asymptotics above the threshold, and compare the corresponding imaginary-time correlators with continuum-extrapolated lattice data for quenched SU(3) at several temperatures. Modest differences are observed, which may originate from non-perturbative mass shifts or renormalization factors, however no…
To study the in-medium modification of quarkonium properties, charmonium correlators at $140.4 (β=6.664) \le T \le 221 (β= 7.280)$ (MeV) are calculated using the NRQCD formalism on $48^3 \times 12$ gauge configurations with dynamical $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavors of Highly Improved Staggered Quarks (HISQ). To determine the "zero energy shift" for these lattices, we perform a fine zero temperature scan ($β=6.664, 6.740, 6.800, 6.880, 6.950, 7.030, 7.150$ and $7.280$). We find that the temperature dependence of charmonium correlators is stronger than the temperature dependence of bottomonium correlators…
Brambilla, Escobedo, Soto, and Vairo have derived an effective description of quarkonium with two parameters; a momentum diffusion term and a real self-energy term. We point out that there is a similar real self-energy term for a single open heavy flavor and that it can be expressed directly in terms of Euclidean electric field correlators along a Polyakov line. This quantity can be directly studied on the lattice without the need for analytical continuation. We show that Minkowski-space calculations of this correlator correspond with the known NLO Euclidean value of the relevant electric fiel…
We determine the strong coupling $α_s(m_Z)$ from dimensionless ratios of roots of moments of the charm- and bottom-quark vector and charm pseudo-scalar correlators, dubbed $R_q^{X,n}\equiv(M_q^{X,n})^\frac{1}{n}/(M_q^{X,n+1})^\frac{1}{n+1}$, with $X=V,P$, as well as from the $0$-th moment of the charm pseudo-scalar correlator, $M_c^{P,0}$. In the quantities we use, the mass dependence is very weak, entering only logarithmically, starting at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$. We carefully study all sources of uncertainties, paying special attention to truncation errors, and making sure that order-by-order c…
We present an NLO analysis of the massive vector current correlator at temperatures above a few hundred MeV. The physics of this correlator originates from a transport peak, related to heavy quark diffusion, and from the quark-antiquark threshold, related to quarkonium physics. In the bottom case both can be studied with separate effective theories, but for charm these may not be accurate, so a study within the full theory is needed. Working in imaginary time, the NLO correlator can be computed in unresummed perturbation theory; comparing with lattice data, we find good agreement. Subsequently…
We calculate the small-momentum expansion of vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudo-scalar heavy-quark current correlators in the large-$β_0$ limit of QCD, extending the analysis of Grozin and Sturm beyond the vector current. Our results are used to study the higher-order behaviour of dimensionless ratios of vector and pseudo-scalar moments used for the precise extraction of the strong coupling, $α_s$, from relativistic quarkonium sum rules and lattice data, respectively. We show that these ratios benefit from a partial cancellation of the leading renormalon singularities. Our results can gu…
We study quarkonium correlators and spectral functions at zero and finite temperature in QCD with only heavy quarks using potential models combined with perturbative QCD. First, we show that this approach can describe the quarkonium correlation function at zero temperature. Using a class of screened potentials based on lattice calculations of the static quark-antiquark free energy we calculate spectral functions at finite temperature. We find that all quarkonium states, with the exception of the $1S$ bottomonium, dissolve in the deconfined phase at temperatures smaller than $1.5T_c$, in contra…
Fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers are associated with the corresponding susceptibilities because of the symmetry of the system. The underlying fact is that these fluctuations as defined through the static correlators become identical to the direct calculation of these susceptibilities defined through the thermodynamic derivatives, due to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Through a rigorous exercise we explicitly show that a diagrammatic calculation of the static correlators associated with the conserved quark number fluctuations and the corresponding susceptibilities are possible in…
This review is aimed to demonstrate the basics and use of formalism of gauge-invariant nonlocal correlators in nonabelian gauge theories. Many phenomenologically interesting nonperturbative aspects of gluodynamics and QCD can be described in terms of correlators of the nonabelian field strength tensors. It is explained how the properties of correlator ensemble encode the structure of QCD vacuum and determine different nonperturbative observables. It is argued that in gluodynamics and QCD the dominant role is played by the lowest nontrivial two-point correlator (Gaussian dominance). Lattice mea…
In order to understand the experimental data on heavy quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC it is necessary (though not sufficient) to pinpoint the properties of heavy $Q\bar{Q}$ bound states in the deconfined quark-gluon plasma, including their dissolution. Here we present recent results on the temperature dependence of bottomonium and charmonium correlators, as well as their spectral functions in a lattice QCD based effective field theory called NRQCD, surveying temperatures close to the crossover transition $140 {\rm MeV} < T< 249 {\rm MeV}$. The spectra are reconstr…
We present the finite temperature spectra of both bottomonium and charmonium, obtained from a consistent lattice QCD based potential picture. Starting point is the complex in-medium potential extracted on full QCD lattices with dynamical u,d and s quarks, generated by the HotQCD collaboration. Using the generalized Gauss law approach, vetted in a previous study on quenched QCD, we fit ${\rm Re}[V]$ with a single temperature dependent parameter $m_D$, the Debye screening mass, and confirm the up to now tentative values of ${\rm Im}[V]$. The obtained analytic expression for the complex potential…
We build a "bottom-up" holographic model of charmonium by matching the essential spectral data. We argue that this data must include not only the masses but also the decay constants of the J/psi and psi' mesons. Relative to the "soft-wall" models for light mesons, such a matching requires two new features in the holographic potential: an overall upward shift as well as a narrow "dip" near the holographic boundary. We calculate the spectral function as well as the position of the complex singularities (quasinormal frequencies) of the retarded correlator of the charm current at finite temperatur…

We derive the imaginary part of the potential NRQCD Hamiltonian up to order 1/m^4, when the typical momentum transfer between the heavy quarks is of the order of Lambda_{QCD} or greater, and the binding energy E much smaller than Lambda_{QCD}. We use this result to calculate the inclusive decay widths into light hadrons, photons and lepton pairs, up to O(mv^3 x (Lambda_{QCD}^2/m^2,E/m)) and O(mv^5) times a short-distance coefficient, for S- and P-wave heavy quarkonium states, respectively. We achieve a large reduction in the number of unknown non-perturbative parameters and, therefore, we obta…
We study hadron properties near the deconfining transition in the quenched lattice QCD simulation. This paper focuses on the heavy quarkonium states, such as $J/ψ$ meson. In order to treat heavy quarks at $T>0$, we adopt the $O(a)$ improved Wilson action on anisotropic lattice. We discuss $c\bar{c}$ bound state observing the wave function and compare the meson correlators at above and below $T_c$. Although we find a large change of correlator near the $T_c$, the strong spatial correlation which is almost the same as confinement phase survives even $T\sim 1.5T_c$.
The spin-dependent corrections to the static inter-quark potential are phenomenologically relevant to describing the fine and hyperfine spin splitting of the heavy quarkonium spectra. We investigate these corrections, which are represented as the field strength correlators on the quark-antiquark source, in SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We use the Polyakov loop correlation function as the quark-antiquark source, and by employing the multi-level algorithm, we obtain remarkably clean signals for these corrections up to intermediate distances of around 0.6 fm. Our observation suggests several new fe…
We study the spin splitting in the heavy quarkonium hybrid spectrum within the framework of an nonrelativistic effective field theory. We derive for the first time the spin-dependent part of the heavy-quark-antiquark potential for heavy quarkonium hybrids to order $1/m^2$ in the heavy-quark-mass expansion. We find that several operators that are not found in standard quarkonia appear, most remarkably an operator suppressed by only one power of the heavy-quark mass. By matching the weakly-coupled pNRQCD to the effective field theory in the regime of short heavy-quark-antiquark distances, we wor…
We investigate quarkonium mass spectra in external constant magnetic fields by using QCD sum rules. We first discuss a general framework of QCD sum rules necessary for properly extracting meson spectra from current correlators computed in the presence of strong magnetic fields, that is, a consistent treatment of mixing effects caused in the mesonic degrees of freedom. We then implement operator product expansions for pseudoscalar and vector heavy-quark current correlators by taking into account external constant magnetic fields as operators, and obtain mass shifts of the lowest-lying bound sta…
We present a determination of the strong coupling constant and heavy quark masses in (2+1)-flavor QCD using lattice calculations of the moments of the pseudo-scalar quarkonium correlators at several values of the heavy valence quark mass with Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action. We determine the strong coupling constant in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at four low-energy scales corresponding to $m_c$, $1.5m_c$, $2m_c$, and $3m_c$, with $m_c$ being the charm quark mass. The novel feature of our analysis that up to eleven lattice spacings are used in the continuum extrapolations, with the…
The spin-dependent operators for heavy quarkonium hybrids have been recently obtained in a nonrelativistic effective field theory approach up to next-to-leading order in the heavy-quark mass expansion. In the effective field theory for hybrids several operators not found in standard quarkonia appear, including an operator suppressed by only one power of the heavy-quark mass. We compute the matching coefficients for these operators in the short heavy-quark-antiquark distance regime, $r\ll 1/Λ_{\rm QCD}$, by matching weakly-coupled potential NRQCD to the effective field theory for hybrids. In th…
