Charge noise remains the primary obstacle to the development of quantum information technologies with semiconductor spin qubits. We use an exact analytical calculation to determine the effects of quasistatic charge noise on a ring of three equally spaced exchange-coupled quantum dots. We calculate the disorder-averaged return probability from a specific initial state, and use it to determine the coherence time T2* and show that it depends only on the disorder strength and not the mean interaction strength. We also use a perturbative approach to investigate other arrangements of three or four qubits, finding that the return probability contains multiple oscillation frequencies. These oscillations decay in a Gaussian manner, determined by differences in energy levels of the Hamiltonian. We give quantitative values for gate times resulting in several target fidelities. We find that the decoherence time decreases with increasing number of qubits. Our work provides useful analytical insight into the charge noise dynamics of coupled spin qubits.
We theoretically consider the temporal dynamics of two coupled spin qubits (e.g., semiconductor quantum dots) driven by the inter-qubit spin-spin coupling. The presence of environmental noise (e.g., charge traps, nuclear spins, random magnetic impurities) is accounted for by including random magnetic field and random inter-qubit coupling terms in the Hamiltonian. Both Heisenberg coupling and Ising coupling between the spin qubits are considered, corresponding respectively to exchange and capacitive gates as appropriate for single spin and singlet-triplet semiconductor qubit systems, respective…
In addition to magnetic field and electric charge noise adversely affecting spin qubit operations, performing single-qubit gates on one of multiple coupled singlet-triplet qubits presents a new challenge---crosstalk, which is inevitable (and must be minimized) in any multiqubit quantum computing architecture. We develop a set of dynamically-corrected pulse sequences that are designed to cancel the effects of both types of noise (i.e., field and charge) as well as crosstalk to leading order, and provide parameters for these corrected sequences for all 24 of the single-qubit Clifford gates. We t…
Single photons from semiconductor quantum dots are promising resources for linear optical quantum computing, or, when coupled to spin states, quantum repeaters. To realize such schemes, the photons must exhibit a high degree of indistinguishability. However, the solid-state environment presents inherent obstacles for this requirement as intrinsic semiconductor fluctuations can destroy the photon indistinguishability. Here we use resonance fluorescence to generate indistinguishable photons from a single quantum dot in an environment filled with many charge-fluctuating traps. Over long time-scal…

In many physical approaches to quantum computation, error-correction schemes assume the ability to form two-dimensional qubit arrays with nearest-neighbor couplings and parallel operations at multiple qubit sites. While semiconductor spin qubits exhibit long coherence times relative to their operation speed and single-qubit fidelities above error correction thresholds, multiqubit operations in two-dimensional arrays have been limited by fabrication, operation, and readout challenges. We present a two-by-two array of four singlet-triplet qubits in gallium arsenide and show simultaneous coherent…
Electrically controllable quantum coherence in quantum dot clusters and arrays based on graphene stripes with zigzag atomic edges (ZZ-stripes) is studied using the Dirac equation and S-matrix technique. We find that respective multiqubit circuits promise stable operation up to room temperatures when the coherence time is prolonged up by a few orders of magnitude through the intrinsic spectral narrowing owing to electron transport between at bands in adjacent sections. Respectively, the coupling of qubits to a noisy environment is diminished, while the inelastic electron-phonon scattering is su…
Charged impurities in semiconductor quantum dots comprise one of the main obstacles to achieving scalable fabrication and manipulation of singlet-triplet spin qubits. We theoretically show that using dots that contain several electrons each can help to overcome this problem through the screening of the rough and noisy impurity potential by the excess electrons. We demonstrate how the desired screening properties turn on as the number of electrons is increased, and we characterize the properties of a double quantum dot singlet-triplet qubit for small odd numbers of electrons per dot. We show th…

We discuss the effect of external noisy magnetic fields on mesoscopic spin fluctuations that can be probed in semiconductors and atomic vapors by means of optical spin noise spectroscopy (SNS). We show that conventional arguments of the law of large numbers do not apply to spin correlations induced by external fields, namely, the magnitude of the 4th order spin cumulant grows as $\sim N^2$ with the number $N$ of observed spins, i.e. it is not suppressed in comparison to the 2nd order cumulant. This allows us to design a simple experiment to measure the 4th order cumulant of spin fluctuations i…
A scaled quantum computer with donor spins in silicon would benefit from a viable semiconductor framework and a strong inherent decoupling of the qubits from the noisy environment. Coupling neighbouring spins via the natural exchange interaction according to current designs requires gate control structures with extremely small length scales. We present a silicon architecture where bismuth donors with long coherence times are coupled to electrons that can shuttle between adjacent quantum dots, thus relaxing the pitch requirements and allowing space between donors for classical control devices. …

Quantum coherence of superposed states, especially of entangled states, is indispensable for many quantum technologies. However, it is vulnerable to environmental noises, posing a fundamental challenge in solid-state systems including spin qubits. Here we show a scheme of entanglement engineering where pure dephasing assists the generation of quantum entanglement at distant sites in a chain of electron spins confined in semiconductor quantum dots. One party of an entangled spin pair, prepared at a single site, is transferred to the next site and then adiabatically swapped with a third spin usi…
We study the dynamics of dephasing in a quantum two-level system by modeling both 1/f and high-frequency noise by random telegraph processes. Our approach is based on a so-called spin-fluctuator model in which a noisy environment is modeled by a large number of fluctuators. In the continuous limit we obtain an effective random process (ERP) that is described by a distribution function of the fluctuators. In a simplified model, we reduce the ERP to the two (slow and fast) ensembles of fluctuators. Using this model, we study decoherence in a superconducting flux qubit and we compare our theoreti…
