We present our analysis on micro-rheology of a bench-scale pulsed fluidized bed, which represents a weakly confined system. Non-linear gas-particle and particle-particle interactions resulting from pulsed flow are associated with harmonic and sub-harmonic modes. While periodic structured bubble patterns are observed at the meso-scale, particle-scale measurements reveal anomolous diffusion in the driven granular medium. We use single-particle tracks to analyze ergodicity and ageing properties at two pulsing frequencies having remarkably different meso-scale features. The scaling of ensemble-averaged mean squared displacement is not unique. The distribution of time-averaged mean squared displacements is non-Gaussian, asymmetric and has a finite trivial contribution from particles in crowded quasi-static surroundings. Results indicate weak ergodicity breaking which along with ageing characterize the non-stationary and out-of-equilibrium dynamics.
This paper investigates experimentally and numerically the dynamics of solid particles during the layer inversion of binary solid-liquid fluidized beds in narrow tubes. Layer inversion can happen in solid classifiers and biological reactors, where different solid particles coexist and segregation by diameter and density occurs. The fluidized beds were formed in a 25.4 mm-ID pipe and consisted of alumina and aluminum beads with diameters of 6 and 4.8 mm, respectively. We placed initially the lighter particles on the bottom in order to force an inversion of layers, mimicking the layer inversion …

A simplified model has previously described the inductive charging of colliding identical grains in the presence of an external electric field. Here we extend that model by including heterogeneous surface charge distributions, grain rotations and electrostatic interactions between grains. We find from this more realistic model that strong heterogeneities in charging can occur in agitated granular beds, and we predict that shielding due to these heterogeneities can dramatically alter the charging rate in such beds.
Besides their huge technological importance, fluidized beds have attracted a large amount of research because they are perfect playgrounds to investigate highly dynamic particulate flows. Their over-all behavior is determined by short-lasting particle collisions and the interaction between solid and gas phase. Modern simulation techniques that combine computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element methods (DEM) are capable of describing their evolution and provide detailed information on what is happening on the particle scale. However, these approaches are limited by small time steps…
We study the effects of fluid-particle and particle-particle interactions in a three-dimensional monodispersed reactor with unstable fluidization. Simulations were conducted using the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) for particle Reynolds numbers of 20-70 with an Archimedes number of 23600. Two different flow regimes were identified as a function of the particle Reynolds number. For low particle Reynolds numbers ($20 < Re_p < 40$), the porosity is relatively low and the particle dynamics are dominated by interparticle collisions that produce anisotropic particle velocity fluctuations. The relati…
Meandering instability is familiar to everyone through river meandering or small rivulets of rain flowing down a windshield. However, its physical understanding is still premature, although it could inspire researchers in various fields, such as nonlinear science, fluid mechanics and geophysics, to resolve their long-standing problems. Here, we perform a small-scale experiment in which air flow is created in a thin granular bed to successfully find a meandering regime, together with other remarkable fluidized regimes, such as a turbulent regime. We discover that phase diagrams of the flow regi…
Prediction of particle radiative heat transfer flux is an important task in the large discrete granular systems, such as pebble bed in power plants and industrial fluidized beds. For particle motion and packing, discrete element method (DEM) now is widely accepted as the excellent Lagrangian approach. For thermal radiation, traditional methods focus on calculating the obstructed view factor directly by numerical algorithms. The major challenge for the simulation is that the method is proven to be time-consuming and not feasible to be applied in the practical cases. In this work, we propose an …
We suggest a simple model for the dynamics of granular particles in suspension which is suitable for an event driven algorithm, allowing to simulate $N=\mathcal{O}(10^6)$ particles or more. As a first application we consider a dense granular packing which is fluidized by an upward stream of liquid, i.e. a fluidized bed. In the stationary state, when all forces balance, we always observe a well defined interface whose width is approximately independent of packing fraction. We also study the dynamics of expansion and sedimentation after a sudden change in flow rate giving rise to a change in sta…
We measure the torque acting on a rod rotated perpendicular to its axis in a granular bed, through which an upflow of gas is utilized to tune the hydrostatic loading between grains. At low rotation rates the torque is independent of speed, but scales quadratically with rod-length and linearly with depth; the proportionality approaches zero linearly as the upflow of gas is increased towards a critical value above which the grains are fluidized. At high rotation rates the torque exhibits quadratic rate- dependence and scales as the rod's length to the 4th power. The torque has no dependence on e…
