Password guessing approaches via deep learning have recently been investigated with significant breakthroughs in their ability to generate novel, realistic password candidates. In the present work we study a broad collection of deep learning and probabilistic based models in the light of password guessing: attention-based deep neural networks, autoencoding mechanisms and generative adversarial networks. We provide novel generative deep-learning models in terms of variational autoencoders exhibiting state-of-art sampling performance, yielding additional latent-space features such as interpolations and targeted sampling. Lastly, we perform a thorough empirical analysis in a unified controlled framework over well-known datasets (RockYou, LinkedIn, Youku, Zomato, Pwnd). Our results not only identify the most promising schemes driven by deep neural networks, but also illustrate the strengths of each approach in terms of generation variability and sample uniqueness.
Recent advances in generative machine learning models rekindled research interest in the area of password guessing. Data-driven password guessing approaches based on GANs, language models and deep latent variable models have shown impressive generalization performance and offer compelling properties for the task of password guessing. In this paper, we propose PassFlow, a flow-based generative model approach to password guessing. Flow-based models allow for precise log-likelihood computation and optimization, which enables exact latent variable inference. Additionally, flow-based models provide…
The security of passwords is dependent on a thorough understanding of the strategies used by attackers. Unfortunately, real-world adversaries use pragmatic guessing tactics like dictionary attacks, which are difficult to simulate in password security research. Dictionary attacks must be carefully configured and modified to be representative of the actual threat. This approach, however, needs domain-specific knowledge and expertise that are difficult to duplicate. This paper compares various deep learning-based password guessing approaches that do not require domain knowledge or assumptions abo…

State-of-the-art password guessing tools, such as HashCat and John the Ripper, enable users to check billions of passwords per second against password hashes. In addition to performing straightforward dictionary attacks, these tools can expand password dictionaries using password generation rules, such as concatenation of words (e.g., "password123456") and leet speak (e.g., "password" becomes "p4s5w0rd"). Although these rules work well in practice, expanding them to model further passwords is a laborious task that requires specialized expertise. To address this issue, in this paper we introduc…
This work presents a thorough review concerning recent studies and text generation advancements using Generative Adversarial Networks. The usage of adversarial learning for text generation is promising as it provides alternatives to generate the so-called "natural" language. Nevertheless, adversarial text generation is not a simple task as its foremost architecture, the Generative Adversarial Networks, were designed to cope with continuous information (image) instead of discrete data (text). Thus, most works are based on three possible options, i.e., Gumbel-Softmax differentiation, Reinforceme…

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for text generation have recently received many criticisms, as they perform worse than their MLE counterparts. We suspect previous text GANs' inferior performance is due to the lack of a reliable guiding signal in their discriminators. To address this problem, we propose a generative adversarial imitation learning framework for text generation that uses large pre-trained language models to provide more reliable reward guidance. Our approach uses contrastive discriminator, and proximal policy optimization (PPO) to stabilize and improve text generation perf…

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have known a tremendous success for many continuous generation tasks, especially in the field of image generation. However, for discrete outputs such as language, optimizing GANs remains an open problem with many instabilities, as no gradient can be properly back-propagated from the discriminator output to the generator parameters. An alternative is to learn the generator network via reinforcement learning, using the discriminator signal as a reward, but such a technique suffers from moving rewards and vanishing gradient problems. Finally, it often falls …
"Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth." - Pablo Picasso. For centuries, humans have dedicated themselves to producing arts to convey their imagination. The advancement in technology and deep learning in particular, has caught the attention of many researchers trying to investigate whether art generation is possible by computers and algorithms. Using generative adversarial networks (GANs), applications such as synthesizing photorealistic human faces and creating captions automatically from images were realized. This survey takes a comprehensive look at the recent works using GANs…

One of the challenging problems in sequence generation tasks is the optimized generation of sequences with specific desired goals. Current sequential generative models mainly generate sequences to closely mimic the training data, without direct optimization of desired goals or properties specific to the task. We introduce OptiGAN, a generative model that incorporates both Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) to optimize desired goal scores using policy gradients. We apply our model to text and real-valued sequence generation, where our model is able to achieve …
MaskGAN opens the query for the conditional language model by filling in the blanks between the given tokens. In this paper, we focus on addressing the limitations caused by having to specify blanks to be filled. We decompose conditional text generation problem into two tasks, make-a-blank and fill-in-the-blank, and extend the former to handle more complex manipulations on the given tokens. We cast these tasks as a hierarchical multi agent RL problem and introduce a conditional adversarial learning that allows the agents to reach a goal, producing realistic texts, in cooperative setting. We sh…

Research on automatic music generation has seen great progress due to the development of deep neural networks. However, the generation of multi-instrument music of arbitrary genres still remains a challenge. Existing research either works on lead sheets or multi-track piano-rolls found in MIDIs, but both musical notations have their limits. In this work, we propose a new task called lead sheet arrangement to avoid such limits. A new recurrent convolutional generative model for the task is proposed, along with three new symbolic-domain harmonic features to facilitate learning from unpaired lead…
We propose a novel online test generation algorithm WOGAN based on Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks. WOGAN is a general-purpose black-box test generator applicable to any system under test having a fitness function for determining failing tests. As a proof of concept, we evaluate WOGAN by generating roads such that a lane assistance system of a car fails to stay on the designated lane. We find that our algorithm has a competitive performance respect to previously published algorithms.

Recent advances in generative models have made exploring design spaces easier for de novo molecule generation. However, popular generative models like GANs and normalizing flows face challenges such as training instabilities due to adversarial training and architectural constraints, respectively. Score-based generative models sidestep these challenges by modelling the gradient of the log probability density using a score function approximation, as opposed to modelling the density function directly, and sampling from it using annealed Langevin Dynamics. We believe that score-based generative mo…

The generative adversarial network structure is adopted, whereby a discriminative and a generative model are trained concurrently in an adversarial manner. Different network architectures are examined, with the discriminative and generative models structured as deep subnetworks of hidden layers comprised of convolutional or recurrent computational units. The models are validated on a data set of human mo…
Generative modeling has recently seen many exciting developments with the advent of deep generative architectures such as Variational Auto-Encoders (VAE) or Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). The ability to draw synthetic i.i.d. observations with the same joint probability distribution as a given dataset has a wide range of applications including representation learning, compression or imputation. It appears that it also has many applications in privacy preserving data analysis, especially when used in conjunction with differential privacy techniques. This paper focuses on synthetic data g…
Generative adversarial networks have been able to generate striking results in various domains. This generation capability can be general while the networks gain deep understanding regarding the data distribution. In many domains, this data distribution consists of anomalies and normal data, with the anomalies commonly occurring relatively less, creating datasets that are imbalanced. The capabilities that generative adversarial networks offer can be leveraged to examine these anomalies and help alleviate the challenge that imbalanced datasets propose via creating synthetic anomalies. This anom…

In unsupervised data generation tasks, besides the generation of a sample based on previous observations, one would often like to give hints to the model in order to bias the generation towards desirable metrics. We propose a method that combines Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and reinforcement learning (RL) in order to accomplish exactly that. While RL biases the data generation process towards arbitrary metrics, the GAN component of the reward function ensures that the model still remembers information learned from data. We build upon previous results that incorporated GANs and RL in…

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are gaining increasing attention as a means for synthesising data. So far much of this work has been applied to use cases outside of the data confidentiality domain with a common application being the production of artificial images. Here we consider the potential application of GANs for the purpose of generating synthetic census microdata. We employ a battery of utility metrics and a disclosure risk metric (the Targeted Correct Attribution Probability) to compare the data produced by tabular GANs with those produced using orthodox data synthesis methods.

Neural random fields (NRFs), referring to a class of generative models that use neural networks to implement potential functions in random fields (a.k.a. energy-based models), are not new but receive less attention with slow progress. Different from various directed graphical models such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), NRFs provide an interesting family of undirected graphical models for generative modeling. In this paper we propose a new approach, the inclusive-NRF approach, to learning NRFs for continuous data (e.g. images), by introducing inclusive-divergence minimized auxiliary …

Generative models have recently received renewed attention as a result of adversarial learning. Generative adversarial networks consist of samples generation model and a discrimination model able to distinguish between genuine and synthetic samples. In combination with convolutional (for the discriminator) and de-convolutional (for the generator) layers, they are particularly suitable for image generation, especially of natural scenes. However, the presence of fully connected layers adds global dependencies in the generated images. This may lead to high and global variations in the generated s…

We present LR-GAN: an adversarial image generation model which takes scene structure and context into account. Unlike previous generative adversarial networks (GANs), the proposed GAN learns to generate image background and foregrounds separately and recursively, and stitch the foregrounds on the background in a contextually relevant manner to produce a complete natural image. For each foreground, the model learns to generate its appearance, shape and pose. The whole model is unsupervised, and is trained in an end-to-end manner with gradient descent methods. The experiments demonstrate that LR…

Cross-view image generation has been recently proposed to generate images of one view from another dramatically different view. In this paper, we investigate exocentric (third-person) view to egocentric (first-person) view image generation. This is a challenging task since egocentric view sometimes is remarkably different from exocentric view. Thus, transforming the appearances across the two views is a non-trivial task. To this end, we propose a novel Parallel Generative Adversarial Network (P-GAN) with a novel cross-cycle loss to learn the shared information for generating egocentric images …

Novel concepts are essential for design innovation and can be generated with the aid of data stimuli and computers. However, current generative design algorithms focus on diagrammatic or spatial concepts that are either too abstract to understand or too detailed for early phase design exploration. This paper explores the uses of generative pre-trained transformers (GPT) for natural language design concept generation. Our experiments involve the use of GPT-2 and GPT-3 for different creative reasonings in design tasks. Both show reasonably good performance for verbal design concept generation.
