Analytical formulae are derived for the zero-point vibrational energy and anharmonicity corrections of the cohesive energy and the mode Grüneisen parameter within the Einstein model for the cubic lattices (sc, bcc and fcc) and for the hexagonal close-packed structure. This extends the work done by Lennard Jones and Ingham in 1924, Corner in 1939 and Wallace in 1965. The formulae are based on the description of two-body energy contributions by an inverse power expansion (extended Lennard-Jones potential). These make use of three-dimensional lattice sums, which can be transformed to fast converging series and accurately determined by various expansion techniques. We apply these new lattice sum expressions to the rare gas solids and discuss associated critical points. The derived formulae give qualitative but nevertheless deep insight into vibrational effects in solids from the lightest (helium) to the heaviest rare gas element (oganesson), both presenting special cases because of strong quantum effects for the former and strong relativistic effects for the latter.
The Lennard-Jones potential is widely used to describe the interlayer interactions within layered materials like graphene. However, it is also widely known that this potential strongly underestimates the frictional properties for layered materials. Here we propose to supplement the Lennard-Jones potential by a Gaussian-type potential, which enables more accurate calculations of the frictional properties of two-dimensional layered materials. Furthermore, the Gaussian potential is computationally simple as it introduces only one additional potential parameter that is determined by the interlayer…
The cohesive energies of solids calculated using mGLJ EOS proposed by Sun Jiuxun (Sun Jiuxun, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 17, L103 (2005)) are seen to be erroneous. Also we observed that the thermodynamic properties calculated using the mGLJ potential diverge for materials whose pressure derivative of bulk modulus at equilibrium is less than 5. Thus the mGLJ potential cannot be used in liquid state theories and molecular simulations to obtain thermodynamic properties.
We present a systematic study of the stability of nineteen different periodic structures using the finite range Lennard-Jones potential model discussing the effects of pressure, potential truncation, cutoff distance and Lennard-Jones exponents. The structures considered are the hexagonal close packed (hcp), face centred cubic (fcc) and seventeen other polytype stacking sequences, such as dhcp and $9R$. We found that at certain pressure and cutoff distance values, neither fcc nor hcp is the ground state structure as previously documented, but different polytypic sequences. This behaviour shows …
The interaction between graphene and copper (111) surface have been investigated using the molecular dynamics simulations. We have shown that it is possible to fit Lennard-Jones potential leading to the correct values of the binding energy and the binding distance and, at the same time, yielding experimentally observed Moiré superstructures. The dependencies of the binding energy, the binding distance and the graphene thickness on the parameters of the potential and the rotational angle are presented.
Melting temperatures at ambient pressure of systems of isosceles Lennard-Jones trimers with angles ranging from 70 degrees to 100 degrees are determined. Two crystal structures are considered: a distorted body centered cubic structure and a distorted face centered cubic structure with preferred angles of 77 and 96 degrees, respectively. Liquid dynamics are slowed down when the angle is increased. A trimer angle of 83 degrees yields the largest distance between isochrones and the melting temperature, suggesting that this value gives the optimal glass-forming ability. It is conjectured that bett…
The Lennard-Jones potential is perhaps one of the most widely-used models for the interaction of uncharged particles, such as noble gas solids. The phase diagram of the classical LJ solid is known to exhibit transitions between hcp and fcc phases. However, the phase behaviour of the quantum Lennard-Jones solid remains unknown. Thermodynamic integration based on path integral molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics calculations are used to study the phase stability of the hcp and fcc Lennard-Jones solids. The hcp phase is shown to be stabilized by quantum effects in PIMD while fcc is shown to b…
We study the structure-stability relationship of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) clusters from a point of view of vibrations. By assuming the size up to $N=1610$, we demonstrate that the $N$-dependence of the maximum vibrational frequency reflects the geometry of the core (the interior of cluster) that will determine the overall geometry of the cluster. This allows us to identify the formation of non-icosahedral structures for $N\le 150$, the vacancy formation at the core for $N\ge 752$, and the transition from icosahedral to decahedral structures at $N = 1034$. We apply the maximum frequency analysis …
Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the structures of Lennard-Jones (LJ) nanowires (NWs) encapsulated by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We found that, when the radius of CNTs is small, the structures of NWs are quite simple, {\it i.e,} only multishell NWs are formed. For CNTs with larger radius, the structure of NWs becomes much richer. In addition to crystal and multishell NWs, three new kinds of NWs are found, {\it i.e,} a hybrid NW with a crystal core coated by a few shells, a crystal NW with droplet-like pits on the side of NW, and a multishell NW with droplet-like pits …
Finding appropriate interatomic potentials which can accurately describe the crystal structure of material is one of important topics in material science. In this paper, several interatomic potentials which comprise of Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials have been proposed for describing both the crystal structures and the evolution of microstructure of the allotropes of carbon such as diamond and graphite. The validity of these LJ potentials can be checked by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. For the lattice identification of simulated systems, we have calculated the distribution functions of the…
In this paper, our goal is to design ABO3 crystal structure with simple interatomic Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials and without setting any initial Bravais lattice and it is carried out by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In the simulation, the equilibrium distances between atoms are determined by LJ potentials. For the identification of the microstructure of simulated system, we have calculated the distribution functions of both the angles between one atom and its nearest neighbors and the distances between atoms and compared the results with those of ideal lattices. The results have clearly…
In a recent paper [S. Khrapak, Molecules {\bf 25}, 3498 (2000)] the longitudinal and transverse sound velocities of conventional Lennard-Jones systems at the liquid-solid coexistence were calculated. It was shown that the sound velocities remain almost invariant along the liquid-solid coexistence boundary lines and that their magnitudes are comparable with those of repulsive soft sphere and hard sphere models at the fluid-solid phase transition. This implies that attraction does not affect the magnitude of sound velocities at the fluid-solid phase transition. This paper provides further eviden…
The dynamical stability of three-dimensional (3D) Lennard-Jones (LJ) crystals has been studied for many years. The face-centered-cubic and hexagonal close packed structures are dynamically stable, while the body-centered cubic structure is stable only for long range LJ potentials that are characterized by relatively small integer pairs $(m,n)$. Here, we study the dynamical stability of two-dimensional (2D) LJ crystals, where the planar hexagonal, the buckled honeycomb, and the buckled square structures are assumed. We demonstrate that the stability property of 2D and 3D LJ crystals can be clas…
A first principle prediction of the binary nanoparticle phase diagram assembled by solvent evaporation has eluded theoretical approaches. In this paper, we show that a binary system interacting through Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential contains all experimental phases in which nanoparticles are effectively described as quasi hard spheres. We report a phase diagram consisting of 53 equilibrium phases, whose stability is quite insensitive to the microscopic details of the potentials, thus giving rise to some type of universality. Furthermore, we show that binary lattices may be understood as consisti…
This paper studies physical aging by computer simulations of a 2:1 Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones mixture, a system that is less prone to crystallization than the standard 4:1 composition. Starting from thermal-equilibrium states, the time evolution of the following four quantities is monitored following up and down jumps in temperature: the potential energy, the virial, the average squared force, and the Laplacian of the potential energy. Despite the fact that significantly larger temperature jumps are studied here than in previous experiments, to a good approximation all four quantities c…
Kinetics of crystal-growth is investigated along the solid-liquid coexistence line for the (100), (110) and (111) orientations of the Lennard-Jones and Weeks-Chandler-Andersen fcc crystal-liquid interface, using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. A slowing down of the growth kinetics along the coexistence line is observed, which is mostly a temperature effect, with other quantities such as the melting pressure and liquid self-diffusion coefficient having a negligible impact. The growth kinetics of the two potentials become similar at large values of the melting temperature and pre…
