Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have proven to be state of the art methods for many image classification tasks and their use is rapidly increasing in remote sensing problems. One of their major strengths is that, when enough data is available, CNN perform an end-to-end learning without the need of custom feature extraction methods. In this work, we study the use of different CNN architectures for cloud masking of Proba-V multispectral images. We compare such methods with the more classical machine learning approach based on feature extraction plus supervised classification. Experimental results suggest that CNN are a promising alternative for solving cloud masking problems.
The Copernicus Sentinel-2 program now provides multispectral images at a global scale with a high revisit rate. In this paper we explore the usage of convolutional neural networks for urban change detection using such multispectral images. We first present the new change detection dataset that was used for training the proposed networks, which will be openly available to serve as a benchmark. The Onera Satellite Change Detection (OSCD) dataset is composed of pairs of multispectral aerial images, and the changes were manually annotated at pixel level. We then propose two architectures to detect…

In this paper, we propose a method using a three dimensional convolutional neural network (3-D-CNN) to fuse together multispectral (MS) and hyperspectral (HS) images to obtain a high resolution hyperspectral image. Dimensionality reduction of the hyperspectral image is performed prior to fusion in order to significantly reduce the computational time and make the method more robust to noise. Experiments are performed on a data set simulated using a real hyperspectral image. The results obtained show that the proposed approach is very promising when compared to conventional methods. This is espe…

Change detection is one of the central problems in earth observation and was extensively investigated over recent decades. In this paper, we propose a novel recurrent convolutional neural network (ReCNN) architecture, which is trained to learn a joint spectral-spatial-temporal feature representation in a unified framework for change detection in multispectral images. To this end, we bring together a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a recurrent neural network (RNN) into one end-to-end network. The former is able to generate rich spectral-spatial feature representations, while the latter e…
In recent years, Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) has become a powerful source for reliable data in applications such as remote sensing, agriculture, and biomedicine. However, hyperspectral images are highly data-dense and often benefit from methods to reduce the number of spectral bands while retaining the most useful information for a specific application. We propose a novel band selection method to select a reduced set of wavelengths, obtained from an HSI system in the context of image classification. Our approach consists of two main steps: the first utilizes a filter-based approach to find rel…
Recently, deep learning has achieved promising performance in the change detection task. However, the deep models are task-specific and data set bias often exists, thus it is difficult to transfer a network trained on one multi-temporal data set (source domain) to another multi-temporal data set with very limited (even no) labeled data (target domain). In this paper, we propose a novel deep siamese domain adaptation convolutional neural network (DSDANet) architecture for cross-domain change detection. In DSDANet, a siamese convolutional neural network first extracts spatial-spectral features f…
Multispectral pedestrian detection is essential for around-the-clock applications, e.g., surveillance and autonomous driving. We deeply analyze Faster R-CNN for multispectral pedestrian detection task and then model it into a convolutional network (ConvNet) fusion problem. Further, we discover that ConvNet-based pedestrian detectors trained by color or thermal images separately provide complementary information in discriminating human instances. Thus there is a large potential to improve pedestrian detection by using color and thermal images in DNNs simultaneously. We carefully design four Con…
Since frequent severe droughts are lengthening the dry season in the Amazon Rainforest, it is important to detect wildfires promptly and forecast possible spread for effective suppression response. Super-resolution aims at increasing image resolution by algorithmic means and has progressed over the recent years due to advances in the fields of computer vision and deep learning. Convolutional Neural Networks based on a variety of architectures have been applied to the problem, e.g. autoencoders and residual networks. While most research focuses on the processing of photographs consisting only of RGB color channels, little work can be found concentrating on multi-band, analytic satellite imagery. Satellite images often include a panchromatic band, which has higher spatial resolution but lo…

Colorectal and prostate cancers are the most common types of cancer in men worldwide. To diagnose colorectal and prostate cancer, a pathologist performs a histological analysis on needle biopsy samples. This manual process is time-consuming and error-prone, resulting in high intra and interobserver variability, which affects diagnosis reliability. This study aims to develop an automatic computerized system for diagnosing colorectal and prostate tumors by using images of biopsy samples to reduce time and diagnosis error rates associated with human analysis. We propose a CNN model for classifyin…
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are used in precision agriculture (PA) to enable aerial monitoring of farmlands. Intelligent methods are required to pinpoint weed infestations and make optimal choice of pesticide. UAV can fly a multispectral camera and collect data. However, the classification of multispectral images using supervised machine learning algorithms such as convolutional neural networks (CNN) requires large amount of training data. This is a common drawback in deep learning we try to circumvent making use of a semi-supervised generative adversarial networks (GAN), providing a pixel-…

Neural network based algorithms has shown success in many applications. In image processing, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) can be trained to categorize facial expressions of images of human faces. In this work, we create a system that masks a student's face with a emoji of the respective emotion. Our system consists of three building blocks: face detection using Histogram of Gradients (HoG) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), facial expression categorization using CNN trained on FER2013 dataset, and finally masking the respective emoji back onto the student's face via homography estimation…
The topic of semantic segmentation has witnessed considerable progress due to the powerful features learned by convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The current leading approaches for semantic segmentation exploit shape information by extracting CNN features from masked image regions. This strategy introduces artificial boundaries on the images and may impact the quality of the extracted features. Besides, the operations on the raw image domain require to compute thousands of networks on a single image, which is time-consuming. In this paper, we propose to exploit shape information via masking…
Multispectral images of color-thermal pairs have shown more effective than a single color channel for pedestrian detection, especially under challenging illumination conditions. However, there is still a lack of studies on how to fuse the two modalities effectively. In this paper, we deeply compare six different convolutional network fusion architectures and analyse their adaptations, enabling a vanilla architecture to obtain detection performances comparable to the state-of-the-art results. Further, we discover that pedestrian detection confidences from color or thermal images are correlated …

However, only high-resolution multispectral (HrMS) and low-resolution hyperspectral (LrHS) images can generally be captured at video rate in practice. In this paper, we propose a model-based deep learning approach for merging an HrMS and LrHS images to generate a high-resolution hyperspectral (HrHS) image. In this paper, we propose a broad comparison between Fully Convolutional Networks (FCNs) and Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask-RCNNs) applied in the Salient Object Detection (SOD) context. Studies in the SOD literature usually explore architectures based in FCNs to detect salient regions and objects in visual scenes. However, besides the promising results achieved, FCNs showed issues in some challenging scenarios. Fairly recently studies in the SOD literature proposed the use of a Mask-RCNN approach to overcome such issues. However, there is no extensive comparison between …

Deep neural networks, especially convolutional deep neural networks, are state-of-the-art methods to classify, segment or even generate images, movies, or sounds. However, these methods lack of a good semantic understanding of what happens internally. The question, why a COVID-19 detector has classified a stack of lung-ct images as positive, is sometimes more interesting than the overall specificity and sensitivity. Especially when human domain expert knowledge disagrees with the given output. This way, human domain experts could also be advised to reconsider their choice, regarding the inform…
