We consider a model arising in facilitated Rydberg chains with positional disorder which features a Hilbert space with the topology of a $d$-dimensional hypercube. This allows for a straightforward interpretation of the many-body dynamics in terms of a single particle one on the Hilbert space and provides an explicit link between the many-body and single particle scars. Exploiting this perspective, we show that an integrability-breaking disorder enhances the scars followed by inhibition of the dynamics due to strong localization of the eigenstates in the large disorder limit. Next, mapping the model to the spin-1/2 XX Heisenberg chain offers a simple geometrical perspective on the recently proposed Onsager scars [PRL ${\bf 124}$, 180604 (2020)], which can be identified with the scars on the edge of the Hilbert space. This makes apparent the origin of their insensitivity to certain types of disorder perturbations.
Experiments performed on strongly interacting Rydberg atoms have revealed surprising persistent oscillations of local observables. These oscillations have been attributed to a special set of non-ergodic states, referred to as quantum many-body scars. Although a significant amount of research has been invested to understand these special states, it has remained unclear how stable scar states are against disorder. We address this question by studying numerically and analytically the magnetization and spatio-temporal correlators of a model of interacting Rydberg atoms in the presence of disorder.…
Recently a class of quantum systems exhibiting weak ergodicity breaking has attracted much attention. These systems feature a special band of eigenstates called quantum many-body scar states in the energy spectrum. In this work we study the fate of quantum many-body scar states in a two-dimensional lattice against random disorders. We show that in both the square lattice and the honeycomb lattice the scar states can persist up to a finite disorder strength, before eventually being erased by the disorder. We further study the localization properties of the system in the presence of even stronge…
We propose a class of non-integrable quantum spin chain models that exhibit quantum many-body scars even in the presence of disorder. With the use of the so-called Onsager symmetry, we construct such scarred models for arbitrary spin quantum number $ S $. There are two types of scar states, namely, coherent states associated to an Onsager-algebra element and one-magnon scar states. While both of them are highly-excited states, they have area-law entanglement and can be written as a matrix product state. Therefore, they explicitly violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We also invest…

Quantum many-body scarring (QMBS) -- a recently discovered form of weak ergodicity breaking in strongly-interacting quantum systems -- presents opportunities for mitigating thermalization-induced decoherence in quantum information processsing. However, the existing experimental realizations of QMBS are based on kinetically-constrained systems where an emergent dynamical symmetry "shields" such states from the thermalizing bulk of the spectrum. Here, we experimentally realize a distinct kind of QMBS phenomena by approximately decoupling a part of the many-body Hilbert space in the computational…
Certain wave functions of non-interacting quantum chaotic systems can exhibit "scars" in the fabric of their real-space density profile. Quantum scarred wave functions concentrate in the vicinity of unstable periodic classical trajectories. We introduce the notion of many-body quantum scars which reflect the existence of a subset of special many-body eigenstates concentrated in certain parts of the Hilbert space. We demonstrate the existence of scars in the Fibonacci chain -- the one- dimensional model with a constrained local Hilbert space realized in the 51 Rydberg atom quantum simulator [H.…
The discovery of Quantum Many-Body Scars (QMBS) both in Rydberg atom simulators and in the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) spin-1 chain model, have shown that a weak violation of ergodicity can still lead to rich experimental and theoretical physics. In this review, we provide a pedagogical introduction to and an overview of the exact results on weak ergodicity breaking via QMBS in isolated quantum systems with the help of simple examples such as the fermionic Hubbard model. We also discuss various mechanisms and unifying formalisms that have been proposed to encompass the plethora of syste…
The violation of the Floquet version of eigenstate thermalization hypothesis is systematically discussed with realistic Hamiltonians. Our model is based on the PXP type interactions without disorder. We exactly prove the existence of many-body scar states in the Floquet eigenstates, by showing the explicit expressions of the wave functions. Using the underlying physical mechanism, various driven Hamiltonians with Floquet-scar states can be systematically engineered.
The concept of geometrical frustration has led to rich insights into condensed matter physics, especially as a mechansim to produce exotic low energy states of matter. Here we show that frustration provides a natural vehicle to generate models exhibiting anomalous thermalization of various types within high energy states. We consider three classes of non-integrable frustrated spin models: (I) systems with local conserved quantities where the number of symmetry sectors grows exponentially with the system size but more slowly than the Hilbert space dimension, (II) systems with exact eigenstates …
Highly excited eigenstates of quantum many-body systems are typically featureless thermal states. Some systems, however, possess a small number of special, low-entanglement eigenstates known as quantum scars. We introduce a quantum-inspired machine learning platform based on a Quantum Variational Autoencoder (QVAE) that detects families of scar states in spectra of many-body systems. Unlike a classical autoencoder, QVAE performs a parametrized unitary operation, allowing us to compress a single eigenstate into a smaller number of qubits. We demonstrate that the autoencoder trained on a scar st…
Non-equilibrium properties of quantum materials present many intriguing properties, among them athermal behavior, which violates the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Such behavior has primarily been observed in disordered systems. More recently, experimental and theoretical evidence for athermal eigenstates, known as "quantum scars" has emerged in non-integrable disorder-free models in one dimension with constrained dynamics. In this work, we show the existence of quantum scar eigenstates and investigate their dynamical properties in many simple two-body Hamiltonians with "staggered" inte…
The presence of quantum scars, athermal eigenstates of a many-body Hamiltonian with finite energy density, leads to absence of ergodicity and long-time coherent dynamics in closed quantum systems starting from simple initial states. Such non-ergodic coherent dynamics, where the system does not explore its entire phase space, has been experimentally observed in a chain of ultracold Rydberg atoms. We show, via study of a periodically driven Rydberg chain, that the drive frequency acts as a tuning parameter for several reentrant transitions between ergodic and non-ergodic regimes. The former regi…
By employing Husimi quasiprobability distributions, we show that a bounded portion of an unbounded phase space induces a finite effective dimension in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. We compare our general expressions with numerical results for the spin-boson Dicke model in the chaotic energy regime, restricting its unbounded four-dimensional phase space to a classically chaotic energy shell. This effective dimension can be employed to characterize quantum phenomena in infinite dimensional systems, such as localization and scarring.
We show how local constraints can globally "shatter" Hilbert space into subsectors, leading to an unexpected dynamics with features reminiscent of both many body localization and quantum scars. A crisp example of this phenomenon is provided by a "fractonic circuit" - a model of quantum circuit dynamics in one dimension constrained to conserve both charge and dipole moment. We show how the Hilbert space of the fractonic circuit dynamically fractures into disconnected emergent subsectors within a particular charge and dipole symmetry sector. A large number of the emergent subsectors, exponential…
Investigating many-body localization (MBL) using exact numerical methods is limited by the exponentialgrowth of the Hilbert space. However, localized eigenstates display multifractality and only extend over a vanishing fraction of the Hilbert space. Here, building on this remarkable property, we develop a simple yet efficient decimation scheme to discard the irrelevant parts of the Hilbert space of the random-field Heisenberg chain. This leads to an Hilbert space fragmentation in small clusters, allowing to access larger systems at strong disorder. The MBL transition is quantitatively predicte…

A quantum many-body scar system usually contains a special non-thermal subspace (approximately) decoupled from the rest of the Hilbert space. In this work, we propose a general structure called deformed symmetric spaces for the decoupled subspaces hosting quantum many-body scars, which are irreducible sectors of simple Lie groups transformed by matrix-product operators (or projected entangled pair operators), of which the entanglement entropies are proved to obey sub-volume-law scaling and thus violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. A deformed symmetric space, in general, is require…
Motivated by recent experimental observations of coherent many-body revivals in a constrained Rydberg atom chain, we construct a weak quasi-local deformation of the Rydberg blockade Hamiltonian, which makes the revivals virtually perfect. Our analysis suggests the existence of an underlying non-integrable Hamiltonian which supports an emergent SU(2)-spin dynamics within a small subspace of the many-body Hilbert space. We show that such perfect dynamics necessitates the existence of atypical, nonergodic energy eigenstates - quantum many-body scars. Furthermore, using these insights, we construc…
We study a kinetically constrained pair hopping model that arises within a Landau level in the quantum Hall effect. At filling $ν= 1/3$, the model exactly maps onto the so-called "PXP model", a constrained model for the Rydberg atom chain that is numerically known to exhibit ETH-violating states in the middle of the spectrum or quantum many-body scars. Indeed, particular charge density wave configurations exhibit the same revivals seen in the PXP model. We generalize the mapping to fillings factors $ν= p/(2p+1)$, and show that the model is equivalent to non-integrable spin-chains within partic…
We revisit the $η$-pairing states in Hubbard models and explore their connections to quantum many-body scars to discover a universal scars mechanism. $η$-pairing occurs due to an algebraic structure known as a Spectrum Generating Algebra (SGA), giving rise to equally spaced towers of eigenstates in the spectrum. We generalize the original $η$-pairing construction and show that several Hubbard-like models on arbitrary graphs exhibit SGAs, including ones with disorder and spin-orbit coupling. We further define a Restricted Spectrum Generating Algebra (RSGA) and give examples of perturbations to …
Atypical eigenstates in the form of quantum scars and fragmentation of Hilbert space due to conservation laws provide obstructions to thermalization in the absence of disorder. In certain models with dipole and $U(1)$ conservation, the fragmentation results in subdiffusive transport. In this paper we study the interplay between scarring and weak fragmentation giving rise to anomalous hydrodynamics in a class of one-dimensional spin-$1$ frustration-free projector Hamiltonians, known as deformed Motzkin chain. The ground states and low-lying excitations of these chains exhibit large entanglement…

Quantum many-body scars (QMBSs) are a novel paradigm for the violation of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis -- Hamiltonians of these systems exhibit mid-spectrum eigenstates that are equidistant in energy and which possess low entanglement and evade thermalization for long times. We present a novel approach for understanding the anomalous dynamical behavior in these systems. Specifically, we postulate that QMBS Hamiltonians $H$ can generically be partitioned into a set of terms $O_a$ which do not commute over the entire Hilbert space, but commute to all orders within the subspace of sca…
We show how a finite number of conservation laws can globally `shatter' Hilbert space into exponentially many dynamically disconnected subsectors, leading to an unexpected dynamics with features reminiscent of both many body localization and quantum scars. A crisp example of this phenomenon is provided by a `fractonic' model of quantum dynamics constrained to conserve both charge and dipole moment. We show how the Hilbert space of the fractonic model dynamically fractures into disconnected emergent subsectors within a particular charge and dipole symmetry sector. This shattering can occur in a…
We explore the implications of stable gravitational orbits around an AdS black hole for the boundary conformal field theory. The orbits are long-lived states that eventually decay due to gravitational radiation and tunneling. They appear as narrow resonances in the heavy-light OPE when the spectrum becomes effectively continuous due to the presence of the black hole horizon. Alternatively, they can be identified with quasi-normal modes with small imaginary part in the thermal two-point function. The two pictures are related via the eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis. When the decay effects c…
In a many-body localized (MBL) quantum system, the ergodic hypothesis breaks down completely, giving rise to a fundamentally new many-body phase. Whether and under which conditions MBL can occur in higher dimensions remains an outstanding challenge both for experiments and theory. Here, we experimentally explore the relaxation dynamics of an interacting gas of fermionic potassium atoms loaded in a two-dimensional optical lattice with different quasi-periodic potentials along the two directions. We observe a dramatic slowing down of the relaxation for intermediate disorder strengths and attribu…
We explore how disorder and interactions conspire in lattice models with sequentially activated hopping to produce novel k-body (or many-body) localized phases. Specifically, we show that when disorder is added to the set of interacting floquet models considered in [Wampler and Klich arXiv:2209.09180], regions in parameter space near the special points where classical-like dynamics emerge are stabilized prethermally (or via many-body localization in some cases) producing new families of interesting phases. We also find that this disordered system exhibits novel phases in regions of parameter s…
We study the spectral statistics of quantum systems with finite Hilbert spaces. We derive a theorem showing that eigenlevels in such systems cannot be globally uncorrelated, even in the case of fully integrable dynamics, as a consequence of the unfolding procedure. We provide an analytic expression for the power spectrum of the $δ_n$ statistic for a model of intermediate statistics with level repulsion but independent spacings, and we show both numerically and analytically that the result is spoiled by the unfolding procedure. Then, we provide a simple model to account for this phenomenon, and…
Many phases of matter, including superconductors, fractional quantum Hall fluids and spin liquids, are described by gauge theories with constrained Hilbert spaces. However, thermalization and the applicability of quantum statistical mechanics has primarily been studied in unconstrained Hilbert spaces. In this article, we investigate whether constrained Hilbert spaces permit local thermalization. Specifically, we explore whether the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) holds in a pinned Fibonacci anyon chain, which serves as a representative case study. We first establish that the constra…
