Data from the Large Hadron Collider on elliptic flow correlations at low and high $p_T$ from Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$~TeV are analyzed and interpreted in the framework of the HYDJET++ model. This model allows us to describe simultaneously the region of both low and high transverse momenta and, therefore, to reproduce the experimentally observed nontrivial centrality dependence of elliptic flow correlations. The origin of the correlations between low and high-$p_T$ flow components in peripheral lead-lead collisions is traced to correlations of particles in jets.
LHC data on the correlations of the elliptic flow $v_2$ of particles at low and high transverse momenta $p_T$ from Pb+Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV are analyzed in the framework of the HYDJET++ model. This model includes soft and hard components which allows to describe the region of both low and high transverse momenta. The origin of $v_2$ values in different $p_T$ regions is investigated at different centralities. It is shown that the experimentally observed correlations between $v_2$ at low and high $p_T$ in peripheral lead-lead collision…
The double-peak structure observed in soft-hard hadron correlations is commonly interpreted as a signature for a Mach cone generated by a supersonic jet interacting with the hot and dense medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. We show that it can also arise due to averaging over many jet events in a transversally expanding background. We find that the jet-induced away-side yield does not depend on the details of the energy-momentum deposition in the plasma, the jet velocity, or the system size. Our claim can be experimentally tested by comparing soft-hard correlations induce…
Global transverse-momentum conservation induces correlations between any number of particles, which contribute in particular to the two- and three-particle correlations measured in heavy-ion collisions. These correlations are examined in detail, and their importance for studies of jets and their interaction with the medium is discussed.
Triangular flow $v_3$ of identified and inclusive particles in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV is studied as a function of centrality and transverse momentum within the \textsc{hydjet++} model. The model enables one to investigate the influence of both hard processes and final-state interactions on the harmonics of particle anisotropic flow. Decays of resonances are found to increase the magnitude of the $v_3(p_{\rm T})$ distributions at $p_{\rm T} \geq 2$ GeV/$c$ and shift their maxima to higher transverse momenta. The $p_{\rm T}$-integrated triangular flow, however, becomes sl…
We discuss the transverse momentum distribution of thermal and prompt photons in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The prompt photons are mostly produced by fragmentation of quark jets (bremsstrahlung). If these quark jets suffer a large energy loss in heavy-ion reactions, prompt photons are significantly suppressed. Thermal electromagnetic radiation from the quark-gluon plasma and the hadron gas might then dominate the intermediate k_T-range. In central Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s}=200A GeV, and in the range 2 GeV < k_T < 4 GeV, the inverse slope of the thermal radiation is 360-460 MeV,…

The influence of the nuclear Coulomb field on transverse spectra of $π^+$ and $π^-$ measured in $Pb+Pb$ reactions at 158 A GeV has been investigated. Pion trajectories are calculated in the field of an expanding fireball. The observed enhancement of the $π^-/π^+$ ratio at small momenta depends on the temperature and transverse expansion velocity of the source, the rapidity distribution of the net positive charge, and mainly the time of the freeze-out.
Transverse mass spectra of pions and protons measured in central collisions of heavy ions at the SPS and at RHIC are compared to a hydrodynamic parameterization. While the chemical temperature needed at RHIC is significantly higher compared to SPS, the spectra may be described using kinetic freeze-out parameters which are similar for both beam energies. At RHIC either the temperature or the flow velocity is higher, but the data provide no unambiguous proof for much stronger transverse flow. The contribution of such hydrodynamic emission at high transverse momenta is investigated in detail. It …
We estimate the electromagnetic effect of the spectator charge on the momentum spectra of $π^+$ and $π^-$ produced in peripheral Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energies. We find that the effect is large and results in strongly varying structures in the $x_F$ dependence of the $π^+/π^-$ ratio, especially at low transverse momenta where a deep valley in the above ratio is predicted at $x_F \sim$ 0.15 -- 0.20. It appears that the effect depends on initial conditions. Thus, it provides new information on the space and time evolution of the non-perturbative pion creation process.
Motivated by forthcoming experiments at RHIC and LHC, we study event-by-event fluctuations in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions in participant nucleon as well as thermal models. The calculated physical observables, including multiplicity, kaon to pion ratios, and transverse momenta agree well with recent NA49 data at the SPS, and indicate that such studies do not yet reveal the presence of new physics. Finally, we present a simple model of how a first order phase transition can be signaled by very large fluctuations.

We explore the correspondence between classical gluon radiation and quantum radiation in a coherent state for gluons produced in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. The expectation value of the invariant momentum distribution of gluons in the coherent state is found to agree with the gluon number distribution obtained classically from the solution of the Yang-Mills equations. A criterion for the applicability of the coherent state formalism to the problem of radiation in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is discussed. This criterion is found to be fulfilled for midrapidity gluons …
The cross sections for exclusive muon pair production in nucleus - nucleus collisions are calculated and several differential distributions are shown. Realistic (Fourier transform of charge density) charge form factors of nuclei are used and the corresponding results are compared with the cross sections calculated with monopole form factor often used in the literature and discussed recently in the context of higher-order QED corrections. Absorption effects are discussed and quantified. The cross sections obtained with realistic form factors are significantly smaller than those obtained with th…
We train a deep convolutional neural network to predict hydrodynamic results for flow coefficients, average transverse momenta and charged particle multiplicities in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions from the initial energy density profiles. We show that the neural network can be trained accurately enough so that it can reliably predict the hydrodynamic results for the flow coefficients and, remarkably, also their correlations like normalized symmetric cumulants, mixed harmonic cumulants and flow-transverse-momentum correlations. At the same time the required computational time decreases …
We investigate the effects of strong color fields and of the associated enhanced intrinsic transverse momenta on the phi-meson production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. The observed consequences include a change of the spectral slopes, varying particle ratios, and also modified mean transverse momenta. In particular, the composition of the production processes of phi mesons, that is, direct production vs. coalescence-like production, depends strongly on the strength of the color fields and intrinsic transverse momenta and thus represents a sensitive probe for their measurem…
Relativistic hydrodynamics has been extensively applied to high energy heavy-ion collisions. We review hydrodynamic calculations for Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies and provide a comprehensive comparison between the model and experimental data. The model provides a very good description of all measured momentum distributions in central and semiperipheral Au+Au collisions, including the momentum anisotropies (elliptic flow) and systematic dependencies on the hadron rest masses up to transverse momenta of about 1.5--2 GeV/c. This provides impressive evidence that the bulk of the fireball matte…
The Monte Carlo HYDJET++ model, that combines parametrized hydrodynamics with jets, is employed to study formation of second v_2 and fourth v_4 components of the anisotropic flow in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at energies of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), sqrt{s}=200 AGeV and sqrt{s}=2.76 ATeV, respectively. It is shown that the quenched jets contribute to the soft part of the v_2(p_T) and v_4(p_T) spectra. The jets increase the ratio v_4/v_2^2 thus leading to deviations of the ratio from the value of 0.5 predicted by the ideal hydrod…
Jets are expected to play a prominent role in the ongoing efforts to characterize the hot and dense QCD medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The success of this program depends crucially on the existence of a full theoretical account of the dynamical effects of the medium on the jets that develop within it. By focussing on the discussion of the essential ingredients underlying such a theoretical formulation, we aim to set the appropriate context in which current and future developments can be understood.
Hard probes are a cornerstone in the ongoing program to determine the properties of hot and dense QCD matter as created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. LHC measurements have so far resulted in a wealth of high P_T data, opening new kinematic windows with high statistics. Yet on first glance, several observations are counter-intuitive and seem to contradict results from the RHIC high P_T program. This calls for a combined analysis of high P_T hadrons and reconstructed jets at RHIC and LHC in a unified framework testing a large number of theoretical models for both medium evolution an…
We calculate the contribution to the elliptic flow observable v2 from two-particle correlations in minijet production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We use a minijet production cross section derived in a model inspired by saturation approach to high energy scattering. Resulting differential elliptic flow v2(pT) is an increasing function of pT for transverse momenta below the saturation scale Qs. At higher transverse momenta (pT > Qs) differential flow stops growing and becomes approximately constant, reproducing the elliptic flow saturation data reported by STAR. The centrality dep…
The double-peak structure observed in soft-hard dihadron correlations was recently studied intensively in order to learn more about the jet-induced medium excitation in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Experimental data shows that the double-peak structure obtained for soft trigger particles coalesces into one peak for harder trigger particles. We demonstrate that this effect occurs when averaging over many jet events in a transversally expanding background, while a hot spot scenario always leads to two distinct peaks. This suggests to study soft-hard correlations induced by heavy-flavo…
Using a Tsallis nonextensive approach, we simultaneously analyze recent data obtained by the LHC ATLAS experiment on distributions of transverse momenta of jets, p_T^{jet}, together with distributions of transverse momenta of particles produced within these jets (defined relative to the jet's axis), p_T^{rel}, and their multiplicity distributions, P(N). The respective nonextensivity parameters for distributions of jets, q_{jet}, for distributions of particles in jets, q_{rel} and the global nonextensivity parameter obtained from P(N), q_N, were then compared with nonextensivity parameters q ob…
We discuss the two-gluon exchange contribution (formally three-loops) to elastic photon-photon scattering in the high-energy approximation. The elastic $γγ\to γγ$ amplitude is given in the impact-factor representation for all helicity configurations and finite quark masses. We discuss the importance of including the charm quark, which contribution, due to interference, can enhance the cross section considerably. We investigate the contribution to the $γγ\to γγ$ amplitude from the soft region, by studying its dependence on nonperturbative gluon mass. Helicity-flip contributions are shown to be …
The Monte Carlo event generator HYDJET++ is one of the few generators, designed for the calculations of heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies, which combine treatment of soft hydro-like processes with the description of jets traversing the hot and dense partonic medium. The model is employed to study the azimuthal anisotropy phenomena, dihadron angular correlations and event-by-event (EbyE) fluctuations of the anisotropic flow in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV. The interplay of soft and hard processes describes the violation of the mass hierarchy of meson and baryo…
We present results on Zjj production via double parton scattering in pA collisions at the LHC. We perform the analysis at leading and next-leading order accuracy with different sets of cuts on jet transverse momenta and accounting for the single parton scattering background. By exploiting the experimental capability to measure the centrality dependence of the cross section, we discuss the feasibility of DPS observation in already collected data at the LHC and in future runs.
The precise reconstruction of jet transverse momenta in heavy-ion collisions is a challenging task. A major obstacle is the large number of (mainly) low-$p_{\rm T}$ particles overlaying the jets. Strong region-to-region fluctuations of this background complicate the jet measurement and lead to significant uncertainties. In this paper, a novel approach to correct jet momenta (or energies) for the underlying background in heavy-ion collisions is introduced. The proposed method makes use of common Machine Learning techniques to estimate the jet transverse momentum based on several parameters, inc…

The physical observables, including multiplicity, kaon to pion ratios, and transverse momenta agree well with recent NA49 data at the SPS, and indicate that such studies do not yet reveal the presence of new physics. Higher-order pQCD corrections play an important role in the reproduction of data at high transverse momenta in the energy range 20 GeV $ \leq \sqrt{s} \leq 200$ GeV. Recent calculations of photon and pion production in $pp$ collisions yield detailed information on the next-to-leading order contributions. However, the application of these results in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions is not straightforward. The study of nuclear effects requires a simplified understanding of the output of these computations. Here we summarize our analysis of recent calculations, aimed at handling the …
