We present the new MSHT20 set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, determined from global analyses of the available hard scattering data. The PDFs are made available at NNLO, NLO, and LO, and supersede the MMHT14 sets. They are obtained using the same basic framework, but the parameterisation is now adapted and extended, and there are 32 pairs of eigenvector PDFs. We also include a large number of new data sets: from the final HERA combined data on total and heavy flavour structure functions, to final Tevatron data, and in particular a significant number of new LHC 7 and 8 TeV data sets on vector boson production, inclusive jets and top quark distributions. We include up to NNLO QCD corrections for all data sets that play a major role in the fit, and NLO EW corrections where relevant. We find that these updates have an important impact on the PDFs, and for the first time the NNLO fit is strongly favoured over the NLO, reflecting the wider range and in particular increased precision of data included in the fit. There are some changes to central values and a significant reduction in the uncertainties of the PDFs in many, though not all, cases. Nonetheless, the PDFs and the resulting predictions are generally within one standard deviation of the MMHT14 results. The major changes are the $u-d$ valence quark difference at small $x$, due to the improved parameterisation and new precise data, the $\bar d, \bar u$ difference at small $x$, due to a much improved parameterisation, and the strange quark PDF due to the effect of LHC $W,Z$ data and inclusion of new NNLO corrections for dimuon production in neutrino DIS. We discuss the phenomenological impact of our results, and in general find reduced uncertainties in predictions for processes such as Higgs, top quark pair and $W,Z$ production at post LHC Run-II energies.
We investigate the effect of including the HERA run I + II combined cross section data on the MMHT2014 PDFs. We present the fit quality within the context of the global fit and when only the HERA data are included. We examine the changes in both the central values and uncertainties in the PDFs. We find that the prediction for the data is good, and only relatively small improvements in $χ^2$ and changes in the PDFs are obtained with a refit at both NLO and NNLO. PDF uncertainties are slightly reduced. There is a small dependence of the fit quality on the value of $Q^2_{\min}$.
The HERAFitter project provides a framework for the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs), and tools for assessing the impact of new data on PDFs. In this contribution, HERAFitter is used for a QCD analysis of the legacy measurements of the $W$-boson charge asymmetry and of the $Z$-boson production cross sections, performed at the Tevatron collider in Run II by the D0 and CDF collaborations. The Tevatron measurements are included in a PDF fit performed at next-to-leading order, and compared to the predictions obtained using other PDF sets from different groups. The measurements…
In this review, we first discuss the perspectives concerning a better determination of the proton structure in terms of quarks and gluons at LHC after describing the results coming from HERA and Tevatron. In a second part of the review, we describe the diffractive phenomena at HERA and Tevatron and the consequences for LHC.
As active data taking has moved to the LHC at CERN, more and more LHC data have been included into fits of parton distribution functions. An anomaly has arisen where formerly excellent agreement between theoretical predictions and experiment in single-top-quark production at the Tevatron is no longer quite as good. Is this indicative of a deeper issue?
A review of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model carried out at high energy lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron facilities is presented, with emphasis on topics of interest for future data taking at the upgraded Tevatron $p{\bar p}$ and HERA $ep$ colliders. The status and discovery prospects are discussed for leptoquarks, Technicolour and supersymmetry, forbidden lepton and quark flavour-changing processes, extra gauge bosons, excited states of composite fermions, generic contact interactions and extra compactified dimensions.
We analyze the impact of the recent HERA run I+II combination of inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross-section data on the CT14 global analysis of PDFs. New PDFs at NLO and NNLO, called CT14$_{\textrm{HERA2}}$, are obtained by a refit of the CT14 data ensembles, in which the HERA run I combined measurements are replaced by the new HERA run I+II combination. The CT14 functional parametrization of PDFs is flexible enough to allow good descriptions of different flavor combinations, so we use the same parametrization for CT14$_{\textrm{HERA2}}$ but with an additional shape parameter for descri…
Approximately taking into account the higher-order effects due to multiple-gluon initial-state radiation, we extract from the latest Tevatron data of prompt J/psi hadroproduction the leading colour-octet matrix elements within the nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism proposed by Bodwin, Braaten, and Lepage. We find that the matrix elements which describe the formation of J/psi mesons from colour-octet cc-bar pairs in the angular-momentum states ^{2S+1}L_J = ^1S_0 and ^3P_J, with J = 0,1,2, which are responsible for the excess of the predicted cross section of inelastic J/psi pho…
Starting in 2008 the H1 and ZEUS experiments have been combining their data in order to provide the most complete and accurate set of deep-inelastic data as the legacy of HERA. The present review presents these combinations, both published and preliminary, and explores how they have been used to give information on the structure of the proton. The HERAPDF parton distribution functions (PDFs) are presented and compared with other current PDFs and with data from the Tevatron and LHC colliders.

Hadronic processes in which hard diffractive production takes place have been observed and analyzed in collider experiments for several years. The experimental rates of diffractive W's and dijets measured at the Tevatron and the cross sections of diffractively produced dijets recently obtained at the HERA experiment are the object of this analysis. We use the Pomeron structure function obtained from the HERA data by two different approaches to calculate the rates and cross sections for these processes. The comparison of theoretical predictions with the measured values reveals some discrepancie…
I report here on the systematic analysis at Tevatron of the R-parity violating SUSY signals which correspond to the possible solution of anomalous HERA events.
The parton distribution functions (PDFs) are a non-negotiable input to almost all theory predictions at hadron colliders. In this talk, I introduce PDF determination by global analysis and discuss selected topics concerning recent relevant data from HERA and the Tevatron, before giving some prospects for the LHC. The combination of H1 and ZEUS cross sections reduces uncertainties and will be an important input to future global PDF analyses. The theoretical description of the heavy-quark contribution to structure functions at HERA has a significant influence on predictions at the LHC. New W and…
We briefly summarise the "MSTW 2008" determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs), and subsequent follow-up studies, before reviewing some topical issues concerning the PDF dependence of cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC. We update a recently published study of benchmark Standard Model total cross sections (W, Z, gg->H and t-tbar production) at the 7 TeV LHC, where we account for all publicly available PDF sets and we compare to LHC data for W, Z, and t-tbar production. We show the sensitivity of the Higgs cross sections to the gluon distribution, then we demonstrate the ability …
The excess of high Q^2 events at HERA has been the subject of recent extensive studies in the framework of several models related to new physics. Here, we would like to concentrate on the most promising, from our point of view, model describing HERA anomaly. We investigate HERA events within the R-parity broken SUSY model and check its relation to LEP and TEVATRON colliders. This study shows that if a squark resonance really takes place at HERA, supersymmetry with broken R-parity can be revealed at either LEP200 or TEVATRON.
We describe new QCD fits to diffractive proton structure functions measured at HERA, and we use these parton densities to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction at the Tevatron and look for the existence of exclusive events in the dijet channel.
We perform a BFKL-NLL analysis of forward jet production at HERA which leads to a good description of data over the full kinematical domain. We also predict the azimuthal angle dependence of Mueller-Navelet jet production at the Tevatron and the LHC using the BFKL NLL formalism.
We present and discuss two different topics where Tevatron and HERA data can be compared directly. A method allowing for a direct comparison of data with theoretical predictions is proposed for forward jet production at HERA. An application to the determination of the effective Pomeron intercept in the BFKL-LO parametrization from $dσ/dx$ data at HERA leads to a good fit with a significantly high effective intercept, $α_P= 1.43 \pm 0.025 (stat.) \pm 0.025 (syst.)$. It is less than the value of the pomeron intercept using dijets with large rapidity intervals obtained at Tevatron. In a second pa…
The phenomenology of heavy quarkonia production in fixed target experiments and at the Tevatron and HERA colliders is reviewed. The latest theoretical results are presented and compared with data, with emphasis on the predictions of the factorization approach by Bodwin, Braaten and Lepage.
We calculate the cross section of inclusive direct J/psi hadroproduction at next-to-leading order (NLO) within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD), including the full relativistic corrections due to the intermediate 1S_0^[8], 3S_1^[8], and 3P_J^[8] color-octet states. We perform a combined fit of the color-octet (CO) long-distance matrix elements to the transverse-momentum (p_T) distributions measured by CDF at the Fermilab Tevatron and H1 at DESY HERA and demonstrate that they also successfully describe the p_T distributions from PHENIX at BNL RHIC an…
We study the effects of intrinsic transverse momentum smearing on J/psi production both at the Tevatron and at HERA. For the case of large-p_T J/psi production at the Tevatron, the effects due to k_T smearing are mild. On the other hand, inelastic J/psi photoproduction at HERA is very sensitive to the k_T smearing and, in fact, with a reasonable value of <k_T> it is possible to resolve the large-z discrepancy seen by comparing non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) predictions with the HERA data. We conclude that, with the present kinematic cuts, photoproduction at HERA is not a good test of NRQCD.
We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC.
A large collection of results for the diffractive dissociation of virtual photons, $γ^{\star}p \to Xp$, have been obtained with the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA. Different experimental techniques have been used, by requiring a large rapidity gap between $X$ and the outgoing proton, by analyzing the mass distribution, $M_X$, of the hadronic final state, as well as by directly tagging the proton. A reasonable compatibility between those techniques and between H1 and ZEUS results have been observed. Some common fundamental features in the measurements are also present in all data sets. They are …
The application of k_t-factorization supplemented with the CCFM small-x evolution equation to heavy quark production at the TEVATRON and at HERA is discussed. The bb_bar production cross sections at the TEVATRON can be consistently described using the k_t-factorization formalism together with the unintegrated gluon density obtained within the CCFM evolution approach from a fit to HERA F_2 data. Special attention is drawn to the comparison with measured visible cross sections, which are compared to the hadron level Monte Carlo generator CASCADE
The amplitude for photoproduction gamma p -> Υp is calculated in a pQCD k_\perp-factorization approach. The total cross section for diffractive Υ's is compared to recent HERA data. The amplitude is used to predict the cross section for exclusive ppbar \to ppbar Υ(1S,2S) process in hadronic reactions at Tevatron energies. We also included absorption effects.
Recent results on diffraction at HERA, from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations, and at Tevatron, from the CDF and D0 Collaborations, are reviewed. The measurement of the diffractive structure function at HERA is presented, and the pomeron structure function is extracted from QCD fits. Diffractive dijet production is given as an example analysis of the diffractive final state. These analysis are consistent with a leading gluon partonic structure for the pomeron. Hard single diffraction, double diffraction and double pomeron exchange processes are studied at the Tevatron and complement the studies p…
Exclusive photoproduction of heavy quarkonia at HERA is analyzed in the framework of the Regge-eikonal approach together with the nonrelativistic bound state formalism. Total and differential cross-sections for the process $γ+p\to (Q\bar{Q})_{1S}+p$ are calculated. The model predicts cross-sections of Exclusive Double Diffractive Events (EDDE) at TeVatron and LHC.
We review the theoretical and experimental motivations behind recent proposals to add forward proton tagging detectors to the LHC experiments as a means to search for new physics. We also review the current diffractive programs at the Tevatron and HERA, focusing in particular on measurements which will have a direct impact on the case for forward detectors at the LHC.
We re-examine like-sign dilepton signals at the Fermilab Tevatron assuming that the excess high-$Q^2$ events recently seen at HERA are due to scalar resonances such as squarks of $R$-parity-violating supersymmetry. For gluinos in the mass range of 200--350 GeV, the like-sign dilepton signal can help to make the crucial distinction between the most favoured squark explanation and other proposed solutions.
We review several most recent prompt-photon measurements at HERA and the Tevatron and discuss their implication for future measurements at the LHC. A comparison to Monte Carlo models, as well as to NLO QCD predictions based on the standard DGLAP and the kT-factorization approaches is discussed. Effects from renormalization and factorization scale uncertainties, as well as uncertainties on the gluon density distribution inside a proton are discussed.
Models based on soft colour exchanges to rearrange colour strings in the final state provide a general framework for both diffractive and non-diffractive events in ep and hadron-hadron collisions. We study two such models and find that they can reproduce rapidity gap data from both HERA and the Tevatron. We also discuss the influence of parton cascades and multiple interactions on the results.
The favoured R-parity violating SUSY scenarios for the anomalous HERA events correspond to top and charm squark production via the $λ'_{131}$ and $λ'_{121}$ couplings. In both cases the corresponding electronic branching fractions of the squarks are expected to be $\ll 1$. Consequently the canonical leptoquark signature is incapable of probing these scenarios at the Tevatron collider over most of the MSSM parameter space. We suggest alternative signatures for probing them at Tevatron, which seem to be viable over the entire range of MSSM parameters.
The excess of high $Q^2$ events at HERA reported in the early 1997 by H1 and ZEUS collaborations has become the subject of extensive studies in the framework of several models related to new physics. Here we concentrate on the most promising, from our point of view, model describing HERA anomaly. We update our previous analysis and take into account new HERA statistics of the 1997 year. HERA events are considered within the R-parity broken SUSY model for a specific scenario with several non-zero couplings. R-parity broken SUSY with several non-zero couplings could explain both high $Q^2 e^+ + …
In this short review, we describe some of the results on diffraction from the Tevatron and give some prospects for the LHC. In particular, we discuss the search for exclusive events at the Tevatron and their importance for the LHC program/ We finish by presenting the project of installing forward detectors in the ATLAS collaboration at 220 and 420 m.
In these lectures, we present and discuss the most recent results on inclusive diffraction from the HERA and Tevatron colliders and give the prospects for the future at the LHC. Of special interest is the exclusive production of Higgs boson and heavy objects ($W$, top, stop pairs) which will require a better understanding of diffractive events and the link between $ep$ and hadronic colliders, as well as precise measurements and analyses of inclusive diffraction at the LHC in particular to constrain further the gluon density in the pomeron.
We examine the effect of including the `combined' HERA structure function data in the MSTW global fit for parton distribution functions (PDFs). The combined neutral-current HERA data have a significant, if not dramatic, effect, of up to 2--3% at NLO for Z boson and Higgs production at the Tevatron and LHC, and a generally slightly smaller effect, particularly on LHC processes, at NNLO. This is an amount comparable, or less than, the typical PDF uncertainties, and hence we do not intend to release an imminent update to the MSTW 2008 fit. We also investigate the consistency with the recent D0 da…
Charmonia hadro- and photo-production are analyzed in the framework of the color-octet model taking into account higher-order effects induced by initial-state radiation of gluons. We argue that color-octet matrix elements obtained from Tevatron data might be reconciled with those extracted from HERA data on inelastic $J/ψ$ photoproduction. Finally we estimate cross sections for events with muons from prompt $J/ψ$'s as a background for the B physics programme at LHC experiments.
The forward photoproduction amplitude for gamma p to Upsilon p is calculated in a pQCD k_t-factorization approach with an unintegrated gluon distribution constrained by inclusive deep-inelastic structure functions. The total cross section for diffractive Upsilons is compared with a recent HERA data. We also discuss the 2S/1S ratio in diffractive Upsilon-production. The amplitude is used to predict the cross section for exclusive Upsilon production in hadronic reactions. Differential distributions for the exclusive p pbar to p Upsilon pbar process are calculated for Tevatron energies. We also s…
The 1994 data published by the H1 collaboration are compared with models based on Regge phenomenology. The $x_{\PO}$ dependence of the data can be described in a model based on the exchange of a dominant diffractive (pomeron) trajectory with additional sub-leading reggeon contributions. The dynamics of the Pomeron structure is studied within the framework of perturbative QCD and new parton distributions are obtained. These parton distributions will allow a direct test of factorisation breaking at Tevatron.
We review some of the recent developments which have enabled the heavy quark mass to be incorporated into both the calculation of the hard-scattering cross section and the PDFs. We compare and contrast some of the schemes that have been used in recent global PDF analyses, and look at issues that arise when these calculations are extended to NNLO.
We respond to some criticism questioning the validity of the current Standard Model Higgs exclusion limits at the Tevatron, due to the significant dependence of the dominant production cross section from gluon-gluon fusion on the choice of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the strong coupling (alpha_S). We demonstrate the ability of the Tevatron jet data to discriminate between different high-x gluon distributions, performing a detailed quantitative comparison to show that fits not explicitly including these data fail to give a good description. In this context we emphasise the importan…
We explore interpretations of the anomaly observed by H1 and ZEUS at HERA in deep-inelastic e^+ p scattering at very large Q^2. We discuss the possibilities of new effective interactions and the production of a narrow state of mass 200 GeV with leptoquark couplings. We compare these models with the measured Q^2 distributions: for the contact terms, constraints from LEP2 and the Tevatron allow only a few choices of helicity and flavour structure that could roughly fit the HERA data. The data are instead quite consistent with the Q^2 distribution expected from a leptoquark state. We study the pr…
The proton diffractive structure function $F_2^{D(3)}$ measured in the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA are analysed in terms of perturbative QCD in the perspective of the QCD extrapolation to the Tevatron and the LHC. It is shown that both data sets can be well described by a QCD analysis in which point-like parton distributions, evolving according to the next-leading DGLAP equations, are assigned to the leading and sub-leading Regge exchanges. For present data from H1 and ZEUS the gluon distributions are found to be quite different and we give the corresponding sets of quark and gluon parton …
The recently reported excess of events at HERA compared to QCD calculations impels us to examine all possible Standard Model explanations before invoking ``new physics''. We explore the possibility of adding an unusual, but small, component of additional quarks at large x (beyond x>0.75) as a way to increase the predicted SM cross-section in the HERA kinematic region by the QCD evolution feed-down effect. We describe various scenarios under which this can be achieved while maintaining good global fits to all established data sets. This implies a much larger SM uncertainty than commonly assumed…
We report on our recent calculation of the inclusive direct photo- and hadroproduction of the J/psi meson at next-to-leading order within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD. We fit the color-octet (CO) long-distance matrix elements <O^(J/psi)(1S0[8])>, <O^(J/psi)(3S1[8])> and <O^(J/psi)(3P0[8])> to the transverse momentum (p_T) distributions measured by CDF at Fermilab Tevatron and by H1 at DESY HERA and show that they also successfully describe the p_T distributions from PHENIX at BNL RHIC and CMS at the CERN LHC as well as the photon-proton c.m. energy and (with worse agreeme…
The parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, a necessary input to almost all theory predictions for hadron colliders, are reviewed in this document. An introduction to the PDF determination by global analyses of the main PDF fitting groups with an emphasis on HERA PDFs is presented. Finally, theory predictions based on different PDFs are compared to some recent relevant LHC and Tevatron measurements.
We analyse a tension between the D0 and CDF inclusive jet data and the perturbative QCD calculations, which are based on the ABKM09 and ABM11 parton distribution functions (PDFs) within the nuisance parameter framework. Particular attention is paid on the uncertainties in the nuisance parameters due to the data fluctuations and the PDF errors. We show that with account of these uncertainties the nuisance parameters do not demonstrate a statistically significant excess. A statistical bias of the estimator based on the nuisance parameters is also discussed.
The final results on the combination of all inclusive deep-inelastic scattering cross section data from the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA are reviewed. The parton distribution functions (PDFs) extracted from these data (HERAPDF2.0) and from HERA data on heavy flavour production and jet production are also presented (HERAPDF2.0Jets). The use of various heavy flavour schemes is compared and the sensitivity of the data to cuts on Q2 is explored. When jet data are included in the fits, a competitive value of $α_s(M_Z)=0.1184 \pm 0.0016$ is extracted at NLO, excluding scale uncertainties
The high precision and large kinematic coverage of the data from the HERA-I running period (1994-2000) have already allowed precise extractions of proton parton distribution functions (PDFs). The HERA-II running program is now underway and is expected to provide a substantial increase in the luminosity collected at HERA. In this paper, a study is presented which investigates the potential impact of future data from HERA on the proton PDF uncertainties, within the currently planned running scenario. In addition, the effect of a possible future measurement of the longitudinal structure function,…
The ZEUS inclusive cross-section data from HERA-I, for charged and neutral current processes, taken with $e^+$ and $e^-$ beams, have been used in a new NLO QCD analysis to extract the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton within a single experiment. The precision of the high-$x$ gluon determination is improved by using ZEUS differential cross-section data on inclusive jet production in $e^+p$ scattering and di-jet production in $γ-p$ scattering
The HERAPDF1.0 PDF set, which was an NLO QCD analysis based on H1 and ZEUS combined inclusive cross section data from HERA-I, has been updated to HERAPDF1.5 by including preliminary inclusive cross section data from HERA-II running. Studies have also been made by adding various other HERA data sets: combined charm data, combined low energy run data and H1 and ZEUS jet data. These data give information on the treatment of charm and the charm quark mass and on the value of $α_s(M_Z)$. The PDF analysis has also been extended to NNLO. The PDFs give a good description of Tevatron and early LHC data…
The kinematic region covered by the LHC experiments probes low values of Bjorken-$x$. At the scale relevant for $W$ and $Z$ production the central rapidity region covers $10^{-3} < x < 10^{-1}$. This means that it is the HERA data which give the most insight into the behaviour of parton distribution functions (PDFs) for the early phase of running at the LHC. The H1 and ZEUS experiments are combining their data so as to provide a legacy of HERA results. The present status of the data combinations and the impact of these data on our knowledge of parton distribution functions is explored.
Parton Density Functions (PDFs) and their uncertainties are extremely important topics for both the Tevatron and the LHC. Experiments at the Tevatron can enhance this knowledge not only by constraining the PDF fits, but also by developing and refining the available PDF tools through feed-back from the experiments that are currently analyzing the highest energy hadron collider data available. It is important that the community has standardized tools and methods at its disposal. In this note we summarize briefly the most recent developments of the The Les Houches Accord PDF (LHAPDF), which is th…
