A large collection of results for the diffractive dissociation of virtual photons, $γ^{\star}p \to Xp$, have been obtained with the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA. Different experimental techniques have been used, by requiring a large rapidity gap between $X$ and the outgoing proton, by analyzing the mass distribution, $M_X$, of the hadronic final state, as well as by directly tagging the proton. A reasonable compatibility between those techniques and between H1 and ZEUS results have been observed. Some common fundamental features in the measurements are also present in all data sets. They are detailed in this document. Diffractive PDFs can give a good account of those features. Ideas and results are discussed in the following.
We present a study of $J/ψ+ jet$ diffractive production in the direct photon process at HERA based on the factorization theorem for lepton-induced hard diffractive scattering and the factorization formalism of the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) for quarkonia production. Using the diffractive gluon distribution function extracted from HERA data on diffractive deep inelastic scattering and diffractive dijet photon production, we show that this process can be studied at HERA with present integrated luminosity, and can give valuable insights in the color-octet mechanism for heavy quarkonia production…
Experimental results from HERA on diffractive vector meson production and their theoretical interpretation within microscopic QCD are reviewed with an emphasis on the BFKL color dipole and kt-factorization approaches.
QED radiative corrections to the cross section of diffractive electro- and photoproduction of vector mesons is calculated at HERA energies. Both semi-analytical and Monte Carlo approaches are discussed and compared.
We calculate the cross section for $c\bar{c}g$-production in diffractive DIS with finite quark masses at zero momentum transfer $t$. The calculation is done in the leading log(1/$x_{P}$) approximation and is valid in the region of high diffractive masses $M$ (small $β$). We apply our cross section formula including both $c{\bar c}$- and $c\bar{c}g$ in a Monte Carlo simulation to diffractive $D^{*\pm}$ meson production at HERA. We compare our predictions to results of H1 using three parameterizations for the unintegrated gluon density.
The contribution of subleading reggeons to the diffractive structure function ${dF_{2}^D / dx_{\funp} dt}$ is estimated from the soft physics data. This contribution leads in a natural way to the violation of the factorization property of the diffractive structure function.
We study the diffractive production of high pt photons at HERA. We have implemented the process as a new hard sub-process in the HERWIG event generator in order to prepare the ground for a future measurement.
The cross section of the $D^*$-meson diffractive photoproduction at the HERA collider has been calculated in the framework of perturbatively motivated model for the different kinematic regions. The camparison between the different Pomeron models has been performed.
A recently proposed parametrization for the deep inelastic diffractive cross section is used to describe the H1 94 data. We find two possible solutions, and we discuss them is some detail.
The QCD analysis of deep inelastic diffractive scattering at HERA is performed assuming the dominance of the "soft" pomeron exchange and simple, physically motivated parametrization of parton distributions in the pomeron. Both the LO and NLO approximations are considered and the theoretical predictions concerning the quantity $R=F_L^D/F_T^D$ for diffractive structure functions are presented.
We study a twist decomposition of diffractive structure functions in the diffractive deep inelastic scattering at HERA. At low $Q^2$ and at large energy the data exhibit a strong deviation from the twist-2 NLO DGLAP description. It is found that this deviation in consistent with higher twist effects. We conclude that the DDIS at HERA provides the first, strong evidence of higher twist effects in DIS.
We analyze the impact of the recent HERA run I+II combination of inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross-section data on the CT14 global analysis of PDFs. New PDFs at NLO and NNLO, called CT14$_{\textrm{HERA2}}$, are obtained by a refit of the CT14 data ensembles, in which the HERA run I combined measurements are replaced by the new HERA run I+II combination. The CT14 functional parametrization of PDFs is flexible enough to allow good descriptions of different flavor combinations, so we use the same parametrization for CT14$_{\textrm{HERA2}}$ but with an additional shape parameter for descri…
We discuss the factorization breaking observed in diffractive dijet photoproduction by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA. By considering the effects of rapidity gap survival, hadronisation, migration and NLO contributions, we find that the observed data are compatible with theoretical expectations.
Pomeron non factorization for the diffractive scattering is considered and an analysis of experimental data is performed with different cuts in the momentum fraction $ξ$. The results of the analysis are compared with the breaking predicted in the Genovese-Nikolaev-Zakharov model.
A great interest for diffraction has been generated these last years by the HERA data. They give us the first opportunity to understand high energy diffractive physics in terms of a fundamental theory, i.e. QCD. A review of the main results from H1 and ZEUS in this field is presented and the relation with the proton structure function at small x-Bjorken values is discussed.
We have applied the Interacting Gluon Model (IGM) to calculate diffractive mass spectra measured recently in e-p collisions at HERA. We show that it is possible to treat them in terms of gluon-gluon collisions in the same way as was done before for hadronic collisions. Analysis of available data is performed.
We demonstrate another success of the AdS/QCD correspondence by showing that an AdS/QCD holographic light-front wavefunction for the $ρ$ meson generates predictions for the cross-sections of diffractive $ρ$ production that are in agreement with data collected at the HERA electron-proton collider.
Diffractive processes in photon-proton interactions at HERA offer the opportunity to improve the understanding of the transition between the soft, non-perturbative regime in hadronic interactions at $Q^2 = 0$ and the perturbative region at high $Q^2$. Recent experimental results from HERA on inclusive diffractive scattering, exclusive vector meson production and the properties of the hadronic final state in diffraction are reviewed. The results are discussed in the context of current theoretical models.
The QCD analysis of deep inelastic diffractive scattering is performed assuming the dominance of the "soft" pomeron exchange and simple, physically motivated parametrization of parton distributions in a pomeron. Results of the analysis are compared with the recent data obtained by the H1 collaboration at HERA. Both the LO and NLO approximations are considered and the theoretical predictions concerning the quantity $R=F_L^D/F_T^D$ for diffractive structure functions are presented.
We study a twist decomposition of diffractive structure functions in the diffractive deep inelastic scattering (DDIS) at HERA. At low Q2 and at large energy the data exhibit a strong excess, up to about 100%, above the twist 2 NLO DGLAP description. The excess in consistent with higher twist effects. It is found, that complementing the DGLAP fit by twist 4 and 6 components of the GBW saturation model leads to a good description of data at low Q2. We conclude that the DDIS at HERA provides the first, strong evidence of higher twist effects in DIS.
We investigate the effect of including the HERA run I + II combined cross section data on the MMHT2014 PDFs. We present the fit quality within the context of the global fit and when only the HERA data are included. We examine the changes in both the central values and uncertainties in the PDFs. We find that the prediction for the data is good, and only relatively small improvements in $χ^2$ and changes in the PDFs are obtained with a refit at both NLO and NNLO. PDF uncertainties are slightly reduced. There is a small dependence of the fit quality on the value of $Q^2_{\min}$. This can be impro…
It is shown that the $A_{ll}$ asymmetry in diffractive $Q \bar Q$ leptoproduction is not small at HERA energies and dependent on the structure of the pomeron couplings and on the masses of produced quarks. The connection of this asymmetry with the non-forward gluon distribution in the proton is discussed.
A detailed analysis of semi-exclusive diffractive processes in e-p DIS at HERA, with the diffractive final states in the forward direction is presented. The contributions of the subleading f_2, ω, a_2, ρreggeons and the pion exchanges to the diffractive structure function with the forward proton or neutron are estimated. It is found that the (a_2,ρ) reggeons are entirely responsible for the forward neutron production at x_P < 10^{-3}. The πN production in the forward region is estimated using the Deck mechanism. The significance of this reaction for the processes measured at HERA, especially w…
We discuss how the evasive Odderon signal can be enhanced by final state interactions. We suggest the charge asymmetry of pion spectra in diffractive pi+pi- photoproduction as a promising signature of the Odderon exchange.
The goal of this study is to determine a set of diffractive parton distribution function (diffractive PDFs) from a QCD analysis of all available and up-to-date diffractive deep inelastic scattering (diffractive DIS) data sets from HERA $ep$ collider, including the most recent H1 and ZUES combined inclusive diffractive cross section measurements. This extraction of diffractive PDFs, referred to as {\tt HK19-DPDF}, is performed at next-to-leading (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. This new determination of diffractive PDFs is based on the fracture functions methodology…
We consider the dependencies of spin asymmetries in the diffractive $J/Ψ$ and $Q \bar Q$ leptoproduction at HERA energies on the structure of the pomeron-proton coupling. It is shown that it is difficult to study the spin structure of the pomeron coupling with the proton from the $A_{ll}$ asymmetry. The $A_{lT}$ asymmetry is an appropriate object for this investigation.
A phenomenological renormalization scheme for hadronic diffraction is proposed, which achieves unitarization without the need for "screening corrections". Predictions for diffractive photoproduction cross sections at HERA are presented and compared with experimental results. A new interpretation of hard and deep inelastic diffractive data emerges, in which the momentum sum rule is obeyed by the constituents of a pomeron described as a mixture of quark and gluon color singlets in a ratio dictated by asymptopia.
We extract diffractive parton distribution functions (DPDFs) and diffractive structure functions from the most recent H1 and ZEUS diffractive DIS data obtained by various methods. We consider Pomeron as an object with parton distribution function, evolving according to the next-to-leading order (NLO) DGLAP equations within the framework of the `Fixed Flavour Number Scheme' (FFNS). Having performed a global fit analysis, we achieve a very good description of all available measurements by introducing a new set of quark distribution form for the Pomeron. We predict longitudinal and charm proton d…
We present recent experimental data from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA for diffractive dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and photoproduction and compare them with next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD predictions using diffractive parton densities. While good agreement is found for DIS, the dijet photoproduction data are overestimated by the NLO theory, showing that factorization breaking occurs at this order. While this is expected theoretically for resolved photoproduction, the fact that the data are better described by a global suppression of direct and resolved contrib…
It is argued that the QCD dipole picture allows to build an unified theoretical description -based on BFKL dynamics- of the total and diffractive nucleon structure functions. This description is in qualitative agreement with the present collection of data obtained by the H1 collaboration. More precise theoretical estimates, in particular the determination of the normalizations and proton transverse momentum behaviour of the diffractive components, are shown to be required in order to reach definite conclusions.
The "triple-Regge" analysis of subleading Reggeon contributions to the diffractive structure function in DIS at HERA is presented. The recently published data allow to estimate the only free parameter of the analysis related to the ratio of the RRP and PPP couplings. The large value of this ratio is prefered which is in agreement with analyses of soft hadronic interactions. The role of the subleading Reggeons as well as pions for the fast forward neutron production in diffractive processes is estimated. The forward piN state production is also discussed.
Cross sections for the diffractive photoproduction of the Upsilon-family at HERA energies, within the framework of the analysis by Frankfurt, Koepf and Strikman, are presented. They compare well with the recent preliminary data from ZEUS and H1. Two novel effects lead to a significant enhancement of the original calculation: the non-diagonal (or skewed) kinematics, calculated to leading-log(Q^2) accuracy, and the large magnitude of the real part of the amplitude. A considerably stronger rise in energy is predicted than that found in J/Psi-production.
We present {\tt GKG18-DPDFs}, a next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD analysis of diffractive parton distribution functions (diffractive PDFs) and their uncertainties. This is the first global set of diffractive PDFs determined within the {\tt xFitter} framework. This analysis is motivated by all available and most up-to-date data on inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering (diffractive DIS). Heavy quark contributions are considered within the framework of the Thorne-Roberts (TR) general mass variable flavor number scheme (GM-VFNS). We form a mutually consistent set of diffractive PDFs due to…
The 1994 data published by the H1 collaboration are compared with models based on Regge phenomenology. The $x_{\PO}$ dependence of the data can be described in a model based on the exchange of a dominant diffractive (pomeron) trajectory with additional sub-leading reggeon contributions. The dynamics of the Pomeron structure is studied within the framework of perturbative QCD and new parton distributions are obtained. These parton distributions will allow a direct test of factorisation breaking at Tevatron.
We discuss the prospects of diffractive dijet photoproduction at the EIC to distinguish different fits of diffractive proton PDFs, different schemes of factorization breaking, to determine diffractive nuclear PDFs and pion PDFs from leading neutron production.
Recent results on diffraction at HERA, from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations, and at Tevatron, from the CDF and D0 Collaborations, are reviewed. The measurement of the diffractive structure function at HERA is presented, and the pomeron structure function is extracted from QCD fits. Diffractive dijet production is given as an example analysis of the diffractive final state. These analysis are consistent with a leading gluon partonic structure for the pomeron. Hard single diffraction, double diffraction and double pomeron exchange processes are studied at the Tevatron and complement the studies p…
In diffractive jet production, two high energy hadrons A and B collide and produce high transverse momentum jets, while hadron A is diffractively scattered. Ingelman and Schlein predicted this phenomenon. In their model, part of the longitudinal momentum transferred from hadron A is delivered to the jet system, part is lost. Lossless diffractive jet production, in which all of this longitudinal momentum is delivered to the jet system, has been discussed by Collins, Frankfurt, and Strikman. We study the structure of lossless diffractive jet production in a simple model. The model suggests that …
The diffraction dissociation of virtual photons is considered in the framework of conventional Regge theory. It is shown that the recent HERA data on large rapidity gap events can be successfully described in terms of the Pomeron structure function. Using Regge factorization, the latter can be related to the deuteron structure function. The parameters which relate these two structure functions are determined from soft hadronic diffraction data. The size of the shadowing corrections at low x and large Q**2 is also obtained.
We present a simultaneous analysis, within an impact parameter dependent saturated dipole model, of exclusive diffractive vector meson (J/psi, phi and rho) production, deeply virtual Compton scattering and the total gamma* p cross section data measured at HERA. Various cross sections measured as a function of the kinematic variables Q^2, W and t are well described, with little sensitivity to the details of the vector meson wave functions. We determine the properties of the gluon density in the proton in both longitudinal and transverse dimensions, including the impact parameter dependent satur…
We investigate in detail the effect of a direct pomeron coupling to quarks on the production of jets in $ep$ scattering with almost real photons. Jet production via a direct pomeron coupling is compared with the resolved--pomeron mechanism. We consider both direct and resolved photoproduction. Rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are calculated and compared with preliminary H1 and ZEUS data.
We use an anti-de Sitter/Quantum Chromodynamics (AdS/QCD) holographic light-front wavefunction for the $ρ$ and $ϕ$ mesons, in conjunction with the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) dipole cross-section whose parameters are fitted to the most recent 2015 high precision HERA data on inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS), in order to predict the cross-sections for diffractive $ρ$ and $ϕ$ electroproduction. Our results suggest that the holographic meson light-front wavefunction is able to give a simultaneous description of the $ρ$ and $ϕ$ production data provided we use a set of light quark masses …
The current analysis aims to present the results of a QCD analysis of diffractive parton distribution functions (diffractive PDFs) at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in perturbative QCD. In this new determination of diffractive PDFs, we use all available and up-to-date diffractive deep inelastic scattering (diffractive DIS) datasets from H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA including the most recent H1/ZEUS combined measurements. In this analysis, we consider the heavy quark contributions to the diffractive DIS in the so-called framework of {\tt FONLL} general mass variable flavor number sc…
We present microscopic QCD calculation of the cross section of diffractive DIS and of the partonic structure of the pomeron from the dipole approach to the generalized BFKL pomeron. We show that the pomeron can not be treated as a particle with uniquely defined structure function and flux in the proton. We find strong factorization breaking which can approximately be described by the two-component structure function of the pomeron, each component endowed with the different flux of pomerons in the proton. We predict very weak $Q^{2}$ dependence of the diffractive contribution to the proton stru…
We propose a means of distinguishing between gluon- and quark-seeded systems that may in principle be measured in deep inelastic lepton scattering. As a particular application, we discuss those HERA data on deep inelastic $ep$ scattering which contain a large rapidity gap in the final state. It is standard to interpret these events as being due to ``pomeron" exchange, although precisely what is meant by this remains unclear. Guided by data, we make some rather general statements about these events and in particular we discuss the potential for discerning whether the exchanged colour singlet sy…
We discuss single-diffractive production of dijets. The cross section is calculated for the first time in the $k_t$-factorization approach, neglecting transverse momentum of the pomeron. We use Kimber-Martin-Ryskin unintegrated parton (gluon, quark, antiquark) distributions (UPDF) both in the proton as well as in the pomeron or subleading reggeon. The UPDFs are calculated based on conventional MMHT2014nlo PDFs in the proton and H1 collaboration diffractive PDFs used previously in the analysis of diffractive structure function and dijets at HERA. We try to describe the existing data from Tevatr…
Predictions for the diffractive photoproduction of the $Υ$-family at HERA energies, within the framework of the analysis by Frankfurt, Koepf and Strikman, are presented. Two novel effects lead to a significant enhancement of the original calculation: the non-diagonal (or skewed) kinematics, calculated to leading-log($Q^2$) accuracy, and the large magnitude of the real part of the amplitude. The resultant cross sections are found to agree fairly well with recent preliminary data from ZEUS and H1. A strong correlation between the mass of the diffractively produced state and the energy dependence…
In this talk, the recent data on diffractive electron-proton interactions at HERA are reviewed. The question of diffraction as a soft or hard process is addressed and discussed in the context of inclusive diffraction, vector meson production and the DVCS process.
Using a recently proposed factorization hypothesis for semi-inclusive hard processes in QCD, one can study, in principle, the diffractive production of the Standard Model Higgs boson at LHC using only, as input, $ep$ diffractive hard-processes data of the type recently collected and analyzed by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA. While waiting for a more precise and complete set of data, we combine here the existing data with a simple Pomeron-exchange picture and find a large spread in the Higgs boson production cross section, depending on the input parametrization of the Pomeron's parton …
We examine the effect of including the `combined' HERA structure function data in the MSTW global fit for parton distribution functions (PDFs). The combined neutral-current HERA data have a significant, if not dramatic, effect, of up to 2--3% at NLO for Z boson and Higgs production at the Tevatron and LHC, and a generally slightly smaller effect, particularly on LHC processes, at NNLO. This is an amount comparable, or less than, the typical PDF uncertainties, and hence we do not intend to release an imminent update to the MSTW 2008 fit. We also investigate the consistency with the recent D0 da…
We present predictions for the diffractive production of heavy quarks in deep-inelastic scattering and hadron-hadron collisions and for double diffractive dijet production in hadron-hadron collisions. With the assumption of hard scattering factorization, the predictions are made using diffractive parton densities that we have previously fitted to HERA data. Comparisons of our predictions with preliminary data from HERA and the Tevatron indicate that factorization is obeyed in diffractive DIS but fails in hadron-induced processes.
We use the color-octet mechanism combined with the two gluon exchange model for the diffractive $J/ψ$ production in resolved photon processes. In the leading logarithmic approximation in QCD, we find that the diffractive $J/ψ$ production cross section is related to the off-diagonal gluon density of the proton, the gluon density of the photon and to the nonperturbative color-octet $^3 S_{1}^{(8)}$ matrix element of $J/ψ$. The cross section is found to be very sensitive to the gluon density of the photon. As a result, this process may provide a wide window for testing the two-gluon exchange mode…
We determine diffractive parton distributions of the proton from DGLAP based fits to HERA data including the twist--4 contribution from longitudinal polarized virtual photons, which is known to be important in the region of large beta. The biggest impact of this contribution is on the diffractive gluon distribution and on the diffractive longitudinal structure function to be determined from HERA data.
We investigate the production of a quark-antiquark pair in diffractive photon- proton scattering, approximating soft pomeron exchange by the exchange of two nonperturbative gluons. In deep inelastic scattering at HERA, events with two jets and the scattered proton in the final state are predicted to be observa- ble, with an important contribution from charm production. For photoproduction of light quark jets with high transverse momentum we find that both exchanged gluons must have a large invariant mass, so that the cross section is very small, whereas for charm quarks it is quite appreciable…
Recent experimental data on dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction at HERA collider are analysed with an emphasis on QCD factorisation breaking effects. The possible sources of the contradiction in conclusions of H1 and ZEUS collaborations such as different hadronisation corrections and different phase space of both analyses are studied.
We describe the most recent data on the diffractive structure functions from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA using four models. First, a Pomeron Structure Function (PSF) model, in which the Pomeron is considered as an object with parton distribution functions. Then, the Bartels Ellis Kowalski Wusthoff (BEKW) approach is discussed, assuming the simplest perturbative description of the Pomeron using a two-gluon ladder. A third approach, the Bialas Peschanski (BP) model, based on the dipole formalism is then described. Finally, we discuss the Golec-Biernat-Wüsthoff (GBW) saturation model w…
Highlights selected from recent measurements of colour-singlet exchange processes at HERA are summarised. Particular emphasis is placed on energy and momentum transfer dependences and the decomposition of the data into an expansion in Regge trajectories. The latest results in vector meson helicity analysis, partonic descriptions of hard diffraction and diffractive dijet production are also covered.
