Superconductivity arises mostly at energy and temperature scales that are much smaller than the typical bare electronic energies. Since the computational effort of diagrammatic many-body techniques increases with the number of required Matsubara frequencies and thus with the inverse temperature, phase transitions that occur at low temperatures are typically hard to address numerically. In this work, we implement a fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approach to spin fluctuations and superconductivity using the "intermediate representation basis" (IR) [Shinaoka et al., PRB 96, 2017] for Matsubara Green functions. This FLEX+IR approach is numerically very efficient and enables us to reach temperatures on the order of $10^{-4}$ in units of the electronic band width in multi-orbital systems. After benchmarking the method in the doped repulsive Hubbard model on the square lattice, we study the possibility of spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity in the hydrated sodium cobalt material Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O reaching the scale of the experimental transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}=4.5$ K and below.
We studied a multi-orbital Hubbard model at half-filling for two and three orbitals per site on a two-site cluster via full exact diagonalization, in a wide range for the onsite repulsion $U$, from weak to strong coupling, and multiple ratios of the Hund coupling $J_H$ to $U$. The hopping matrix elements among the orbitals were also varied extensively. At intermediate and large $U$, we mapped the results into a Heisenberg model. For two orbitals per site, the mapping is into a $S=1$ Heisenberg model where by symmetry both nearest-neighbor $(\mathbf{S}_{i}\cdot\mathbf{S}_{j})$ and $(\mathbf{S}_…
This work investigates a d-p Hubbard model by the n-pole approximation in the hole-doped regime. In particular, the spectral function $A(ω,\vec{k})$ is analyzed varying the filling, the local Coulomb interaction and the $d-p$ hybridization. It should be remarked that the original n-pole approximation (Phys. Rev. 184 (1969) 451) has been improved in order to include adequately the $\vec{k}$-dependence of the important correlation function $< \vec{S}_j\cdot\vec{S}_i>$ present in the poles of the Green's functions. It has been verified that the topology of the Fermi surface (defined by $A(ω=0,\ve…
A weak magnetic order was found in a non-superconducting bilayered-hydrate Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O sample by a Co Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) measurement. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_1T$ shows a prominent peak at 5.5 K, below which a Co-NQR peak splits due to an internal field at the Co site. From analyses of the Co NQR spectrum at 1.5 K, the internal field is evaluated to be $\sim$ 300 Oe and is in the $ab$-plane. The magnitude of the internal field suggests that the ordered moment is as small as $\sim 0.015$ $μ_B$ using the hyperfine c…
Combining symmetry based considerations with inputs from available experimental results, we make the case that a novel spin-triplet superconductivity triggered by antiferromagnetic fluctuations may be realized in the newly discovered layered cobaltide Na$_x$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_2$O. In the proposed picture, unaccessable via resonating-valence-bond physics extrapolated from half-filling, the pairing process is similar to that advanced for Sr$_{2}$RuO$_4$, but enjoys a further advantage coming from the hexagonal structure of the Fermi-surface which gives a stronger pairing tendency.
We propose a mechanism of superconductivity from purely repulsive interactions in the strong coupling regime, where the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) mechanism such as the spin-fluctuation approach is difficult to apply. Based on the SU(2) slave-rotor representation of the Hubbard model, we find that the single energy scale for the amplitude formation of Cooper pairs and their phase coherence is separated into two energy scales, allowing the so called pseudogap state where such Cooper pairs are coherent locally but not globally, interpreted as realization of the density-phase uncertainty pri…
We report on first investigation of the lattice dynamics in the novel superconducting material Na$\_{0.35}$CoO$\_2$$\cdot$1.3H$\_2$O and the non-hydrated parent compound Na$\_{0.7}$CoO$\_2$ by inelastic x-ray scattering. The measured phonon dispersion along the $Γ-M$ direction show a marked softening with hole doping of two optical phonon branches close to the Brillouin zone boundary. The phonon spectra, dispersion, and softening are well reproduced by first-principle calculations. The calculations indicates that the soft branches are mainly composed of Co-vibration modes. The estimation of th…
We report the electrical, magnetic and thermal measurements on a layered cobalt oxyhydrate Na$_{0.31}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O. Bulk superconductivity at 4.3 K has been confirmed, however, the measured superconducting fraction is relatively low probably due to the sample's intrinsic two-dimensional characteristic. The compound exhibits weak-coupled and extreme type-II superconductivity with the average energy gap $Δ_{a}(0)$ and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$ of $\sim$ 0.50 meV and $\sim$ 140, respectively. The normalized electronic specific heat data in the superconducting state well fit t…
Stimulated by the recent finding of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$.1.3H$_2$O superconductor, we investigate superconducting instabilities on a 2D triangular lattice in the repulsive Hubbard model. Using the third-order perturbation expansion with respect to the on-site repulsion $U$, we evaluate the linearized Dyson-Gor'kov equation. We find that an $f$-wave spin-triplet pairing is the most stable in a wide range of the next nearest neighbor hopping integral $t'$ and an electron number density $n$. The introduction of $t'$ is crucial to adjust the van Hove singularities to the neighborhood of the Fermi su…
Within the charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory, the mechanism of superconductivity in Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O is studied. It is shown that dressed fermions interact occurring directly through the kinetic energy by exchanging magnetic excitations. This interaction leads to a net attractive force between dressed fermions(then the electron Cooper pairs), and their condensation reveals the superconducting ground state. The optimal superconducting transition temperature occurs in the electron doping concentration $δ\approx 0.29$, and then decreases for both underdoped and overdoped …
In analogy with ordinary BCS superconductivity, we identify possible pairing instabilities with poles in a certain class of Green functions of the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model, which normally signify bound states. Relating the gap to the location of these poles, we find that these instabilities exist in the range of hole doping between 0.03 and 0.24. The magnitude of the gap can be calculated without introducing an explicit cut-off, and for reasonably large coupling U/t = 10, the maximum gap is on the order of 0.08 in units of the hopping parameter t.
We report the finding of time-reversal-symmetry-breaking $d_{x^2-y^2}+ id_{xy}$ superconducting ground state in the slave-boson mean-field theory for the t-J model on triangular lattice. For $t/J=-5$ ($t/J=-9$) pairing exists for $x < 13%$ ($x<8%$) upon electron doping, and $x <56%$ ($x<13%$) upon hole doping. These results are potentially relevant to doped Mott insulators Na$_x$CoO$_2$.yH$_2$O and Na$_{1-x}$TiO$_2$.
Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on the new layered cobalt oxide superconductor Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O and its parent, non-superconducting compounds, have revealed unconventional nature of superconductivity through: (1) a small superfluid energy which implies a surprisingly high effective mass of the charge carriers, approximately 100 times the bare electron mass; (2) the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ scaling with the superfluid energy following the correlations found in high-$T_{c}$ cuprate and some other two-dimensional superconductors; (3) an anisotro…
Despite the multi-band spectrum of the widely-known Hofstadter butterfly, it turns out that the pairing correlations of the time-reversal-symmetric Hofstadter-Hubbard model are well-described by a single order parameter that is uniform in real space. By exploiting a BCS mean-field theory for the nearly-flat butterfly-bands regime of low magnetic-flux limit, here we reveal a number of unusual superfluid properties both in the ground state and at finite temperatures. Our thorough analysis includes but is not limited to the order parameter, condensate and superfluid fractions, and the critical BC…
Within the charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory, we have shown that the mechanism of superconductivity in the electron doped cobaltate Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O is ascribed to its kinetic energy. The dressed fermions interact occurring directly through the kinetic energy by exchanging magnetic excitations. This interaction leads to a net attractive force between dressed fermions, then the electron Cooper pairs originating from the dressed fermion pairing state are due to the charge-spin recombination, and their condensation reveals the superconducting ground state. The superconduc…
We report ^{59}Co NMR studies in single crystals of cobalt oxide superconductor Na_{0.42}CoO_{2}\cdot1.3H_{2}O (T_c=4.25K) and its parent compound Na_{0.42}CoO_{2}. We find that both the magnitude and the temperature (T) dependence of the Knight shifts are identical in the two compounds above T_c. The spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) is also identical above T_0 \sim60 K for both compounds. Below T_0, the unhydrated sample is found to be a non-correlated metal that well conforms to Fermi liquid theory, while spin fluctuations develop in the superconductor. These results indicate that water …
We present a mathematical analysis of the spin-constrained Hartree-Fock solutions (CHF) of the 2-site Hubbard model. The analysis sheds light on the spin symmetry breaking process around the Coulson-Fischer point. CHF states are useful as input states for the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM) in which CHF states can be used as a basis for multiconfigurational calculations in the Hill-Wheeler equations. The spin degree of freedom provides the generator coordinate in the GCM related to static electron correlation.
We report a precise $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR) measurement on the recently discovered cobalt oxyhydrate Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$$\cdot y$H$_{2}$O superconductor from $T$=40 K down to 0.2 K. We find that in the normal state the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ follows a Curie-Weiss type temperature ($T$) variation, $1/T_1T=C/(T-θ)$, with $θ$=-42 K, suggesting two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin correlations. Below $T_c$=3.9 K, $1/T_1$ decreases with no coherence peak and follows a $T^n$ dependence with $n\simeq$2.2 down to $\sim$2.0 K but crosses over to a $1/T_1\propto T$…
We show that finite angular momentum pairing chiral superconductors on the triangular lattice have point zeroes in the complex gap function. A topological quantum phase transition takes place through a nodal superconducting state at a specific carrier density $x_c$ where the normal state Fermi surface crosses the isolated zeros. For spin singlet pairing, we show that the second nearest neighbor $d+id$-wave pairing can be the dominant pairing channel. The gapless critical state at $x_c\simeq0.25$ has six Dirac points and is topologically nontrivial with a $T^3$ spin relaxation rate below $T_c$.…
We have used electron and neutron powder diffraction to elucidate the structural properties of superconducting \NaD. Our measurements show that our superconducting sample exhbits a number of supercells ranging from ${1/3}a^{*}$ to ${1/15}a^{*}$, but the most predominant one, observed also in the neutron data, is a double hexagonal cell with dimensions \dhx. Rietveld analysis reveals that \deut\space is inserted between CoO$_{2}$ sheets as to form a layered network of NaO$_{6}$ triangular prisms. Our model removes the need to invoke a 5K superconducting point compound and suggests that a solid …
The metal-insulator transition of the quarter-filled Hubbard model on triangular lattice is studied at the mean field level. We find a quasi-one dimensional metallic state with a collinear magnetic order competes closely with an insulating state with a non-coplanar magnetic order for both signs of the hopping integral $t$. In the strong correlation regime($U/|t|\gg1$), it is found that the metal-insulator transition of the system occurs in a two-step manner. The quasi-one dimensional metallic state with collinear magnetic order is found to be stable in an intermediate temperature region betwee…
We report the in-plane resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of the layered cobalt oxide Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}{\cdot}1.3$H$_{2}$O single crystal. The temperature dependence of the resistivity shows metallic behavior from room temperature to the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of 4.5 K. Sharp resistive transition, zero resistivity and almost perfect superconducting volume fraction below $T_{c}$ indicate the good quality and the bulk superconductivity of the single crystal. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ and the coherence length $ξ$ are obtained from the resistive transitions i…
We investigate the excitation spectrum of strongly correlated sodium cobaltate within a realistic many-body description beyond dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). At lower doping around $x$=0.3, rather close to Mott-critical half-filling, the single-particle spectral function of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ displays an upper Hubbard band which is captured within DMFT. Momentum-dependent self-energy effects beyond DMFT become dominant at higher doping. Around a doping level of $x\sim 0.67$, the incoherent excitations give way to finite-energy spin-polaron excitations in close agreement with optics experiments…
An analytical solution of the Mott transition is obtained for the Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice in the large coordination number ($z$) limit. The excitonic binding of doublons (doubly occupied sites) and holons (empty sites) is shown to be the origin of a continuous Mott transition between a metal and an emergent quantum spin liquid insulator. The doublon-holon binding theory enables a different large-$z$ limit and a different phase structure than the dynamical meanfield theory by allowing intersite spinon correlations to lift the $2^N$-fold degeneracy of the local moments in the insulati…
We find the eigenvalues $E_α $ and eigenvectors $|E_α>$ of the extended Hubbard dimer and we represent each part $E_α |E_α> < E_α |$ of the dimer Hamiltonian $(α=1,2,...,16)$in the second quantizations with the use of the Hubbard and spin operators. This procedure gives a review of all competitive, intrinsic interactions, deeply hidden in the orginal form of the considered Hamiltonian. Among competitive interactions we can find ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions (also in the form appearing in the $t-J$ model), hopping of the Cooper pairs between different dimer lattice sites (sim…
Using a recently developed renormalization group method for fermionic superfluids, we determine conditions for d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model at moderate interaction strength, and we compute the pairing gap in the superconducting regime. A pairing instability signaled by a divergent flow in the Cooper channel leads to a superconducting state in all studied cases. The next-to-nearest neighbor hopping $t'$ plays a crucial role in the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. A sizable $t'$ is necessary to obtain a sizable pairing gap.
We have studied the superconducting phase diagram of \NaH\space as a function of electronic doping, characterizing our samples both in terms of Na content $x$ and the Co valence state. Our findings are consistent with a recent report that intercalation of \oxp\space ions into Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$, together with water, act as an additional dopant indicating that Na sub-stochiometry alone does not control the electronic doping of these materials. We find a superconducting phase diagram where optimal \Tc\space is achieved through a Co valence range of 3.24 - 3.35, while \Tc\space decreases for mater…
We study mesoscopic pairing in the one dimensional repulsive Hubbard model and its interplay with the BCS model in the canonical ensemble. The key tool is comparing the Bethe ansatz equations of the two models in the limit of small Coulomb repulsion. For the ordinary Hubbard interaction the BCS Bethe equations with infinite pairing coupling are recovered; a finite pairing is obtained by considering a further density-dependent phase-correlation in the hopping amplitude of the Hubbard model. We find that spin degrees of freedom in the Hubbard ground state are arranged in a state of the BCS type,…
We report systematic measurements using the ^{59}Co nuclear quadrupole resonance(NQR) technique on the cobalt oxide superconductors Na_{x}CoO_{2}\cdot 1.3H_{2}O over a wide Na content range x=0.25\sim 0.34. We find that T_c increases with decreasing x but reaches to a plateau for x \leq0.28. In the sample with x \sim 0.26, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 shows a T^3 variation below T_c and down to T\sim T_c/6, which unambiguously indicates the presence of line nodes in the superconducting (SC) gap function. However, for larger or smaller x, 1/T_1 deviates from the T^3 variation below T\…
Co NQR studies were performed in recently discovered superconductor Na$_x$CoO$_2$$\cdot y$H$_2$O to investigate physical properties in the superconducting (SC) and normal states. Two samples from the same Na$_x$CoO$_2$ were examined, SC bilayer-hydrate sample with $T_c \sim 4.7$ K and non-SC monolayer-hydrate sample. From the measurement of nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in the SC sample, it was found that the coherence peak is absent just below $T_c$ and that $1/T_1$ is proportional to temperature far below $T_c$. These results, which are in qualitatively agreement with the prev…
The ground state phase diagram of the 1D Hubbard chain with pair-hopping interaction is studied. The analysis of the model is performed using the continuum-limit field theory approach and exact diagonalization studies. At half-filling the phase diagram is shown to consist of two superconducting states with Cooper pair center-of-mass momentum Q=0 (BCS-η_0 phase) and Q=π(η_π-phase) and four insulating phases corresponding to the Mott antiferromagnet, the Peierls dimerized phase, the charge-density-wave (CDW) insulator as well as an unconventional insulating phase characterized by the coexistence…
An $^{17}$O NMR measurement was performed on nonoriented polycrystalline Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2 \cdot y$H$_2$O with superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_\text{c} = 4.6$ K. A weak temperature dependence was observed in the Knight shift at the O site ($^{17}K$). The spin part of $^{17}K$ ($^{17}K_{\rm spin}$) is estimated from the plot of $^{17}K$ against bulk susceptibility $χ$. The $^{17}K_{\rm spin}$ decreases in the SC state, indicative of the decrease in the in-plane component of the spin susceptibility. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ at the O site $^{17}(1/T_1)$ show…

Determining the nature of band gaps in transition-metal compounds remains challenging. We present a first-principles study on electronic and optical properties of CoO using hybrid functional pseudopotentials. We show that optical absorption spectrum can provide a clear fingerprint to distinguish between Mott-Hubbard, intermediate and charge-transfer insulators. This discrimination is reflected by the qualitative difference in peak satellites due to unique interplay between $d$-$d$ and $p$-$d$ excitations, thus allowing identification from experimental data alone, unlike the existing methods th…
We preform a multi-orbital analysis on the novel superconductivity in Na_{x}CoO_{2} \cdot yH_{2}O. We construct a three-orbital model which reproduces the band structure expected from the LDA calculation. The effective interaction leading to the pairing is estimated by means of the perturbation theory. It is shown that the spin triplet superconductivity is stabilized in the wide parameter region. This is basically owing to the ferromagnetic character of spin fluctuation. The p-wave and f-wave superconductivity are nearly degenerate. The former is realized when the Hund's rule coupling is large…
We show that geometric frustration and strong correlation in the triangular lattice Hubbard model lead a rich and novel phase structure of $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ spin-charge textured electronic states over a wide region of electron doping $0\le x \le 0.40$. In addition to the 120$^\circ$ Néel ordered insulator at half-filling, we found a novel spin-charge ordered insulator at $x=1/3$ with collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order on the underlying unfrustrated honeycomb lattice. Separating the two insulating phases is a Lifshitz transition between a noncollinear AF ordered metal and one with co…
Using large-scale dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we explore the unconventional superconductivity in the hole-doped Hubbard model on the triangular lattice. Due to the interplay of electronic correlations, geometric frustration, and Fermi surface topology, we find a doubly degenerate singlet pairing state at an interaction strength close to the bare bandwidth. Such an unconventional superconducting state is mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations along the $Γ$-$K$ direction, where the Fermi surface is nested. An exact decomposition of the irreducible particle-particl…
We have performed Co-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O compounds with different Na ($x$) and hydrate ($y$) contents. Two samples with different Na contents but nearly the same $T_c$ values ($x$ = 0.348, $T_c$ = 4.7 K ; $x$ = 0.339, $T_c$ = 4.6 K) were investigated. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in the superconducting (SC) and normal states is almost the same for the two samples except just above $T_c$. NQR measurements were also performed on different-hydrate-content samples with different $T_c$ values, which were prepared from the same N…
Motivated by recent experiments and band calculation results, we investigate the possibility of superconductivity originating from the $a_{1g}$ band of Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O assuming the absence of $e_g'$ pockets. We adopt a single band $U$-$V$ model that takes into account the local minimum of the $a_{1g}$ band dispersion at the $Γ$ point. Using the fluctuation exchange method, we find that an s-wave pairing with a gap that changes sign between the inner and the outer Fermi surfaces is enhanced due to the coexistence of spin fluctuations at wave vectors bridging the two Fermi surfaces an…
To study the electron-phonon mechanism of superconductivity in NaxCoO2, we perform semiquantitative analysis of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) between relevant optical phonons (breathing and shear phonons) and t_{2g} electrons (a_{1g} and e_g' electrons) in the presence of trigonal distortion. We consider two kinds of contributions to the EPI; the EPI originating from the Coulomb potential of O ions and that originating from the d-p transfer integral between Co and O in CoO_6 octahedron. We find that the EPI for shear phonons, which induces the interorbital hopping of electrons, is larg…
We present a comprehensive study of the thermodynamic properties of the three-dimensional fermionic Hubbard model, with application to cold fermionic atoms subject to an optical lattice and a trapping potential. Our study is focused on the temperature range of current experimental interest. We employ two theoretical methods - dynamical mean-field theory and high-temperature series - and perform comparative benchmarks to delimitate their respective range of validity. Special attention is devoted to understand the implications that thermodynamic properties of this system have on cooling. Conside…
We study by the Gutzwiller approximation the melting of the valence bond crystal phase of a bilayer Hubbard model at sufficiently large inter-layer hopping. We find that a superconducting domain, with order parameter $d_{z^2-r^2}$, $z$ being the inter-layer direction and $r$ the intra-layer one, is stabilized variationally close to the half-filled non-magnetic Mott insulator. Superconductivity exists at half-filling just at the border of the Mott transition and extends away from half-filling into a whole region till a critical doping, beyond which it gives way to a normal metal phase. This res…
We have rigorously shown that a strong Hubbard repulsion can cause superconductivity. The model, which has a particular set of local symmetries, manifests the phase diagram of many unconventional superconductors; anti-ferromagnetism paramagnetism, superconductivity, and even ferromagnetism are all observed. The key technique in the analysis is an exact non-linear fermion transformation, which preserves the correlated motion of electrons while removing the strong interactions. Using resolvent formalism, it is exactly shown that two holes at the Mott point bind to form a localised Cooper pair. A…
We propose that spin-triplet pairing mechanism due to disconnected Fermi surfaces proposed in our previous study [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 63} 174507 (2001)] may be at work in a recently discovered superconductor Na$_x$CoO$_2$ $\cdot y$ H$_2$O. We introduce a single band effective model that takes into account the pocket-like Fermi surfaces along with the van Hove singularity near the K point found in the band calculation results. Applying fluctuation exchange method and solving the linearized {É}liashberg equation, the most dominant pairing is found to have spin-triplet $f$-wave symmetry, where the …
We define one-dimensional particles with generalized exchange statistics. The exact solution of a Hubbard-type Hamiltonian constructed with such particles is achieved using the Coordinate Bethe Ansatz. The chosen deformation of the statistics is equivalent to the presence of a magnetic field produced by the particles themselves, which is present also in a ``free gas'' of these particles.
We present a framework of semiclassical superconductivity (SC) dynamics that properly includes effects of spatial fluctuations for the attractive Hubbard model. We consider both coherent and adiabatic limits. To model the coherent SC dynamics, we develop a real-space von~Neumann equation based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Applying our method to interaction quenches in the negative-$U$ Hubbard model, we show that the relaxation of SC order at weak coupling is dominated by Landau-damping. At strong coupling, we find a two-stage relaxation of the pairing field: a collapse…
We employ the weak-coupling renormalization group approach to study unconventional superconducting phases emerging in the extended, repulsive Hubbard model on paradigmatic two-dimensional lattices. Repulsive interactions usually lead to higher-angular momentum Cooper pairing. By considering not only longer-ranged hoppings, but also non-local electron-electron interactions, we are able to find superconducting solutions for all irreducible representations on the square and hexagonal lattices, including extended regions of chiral topological superconductivity. For the square, triangular and honey…
We study the Hubbard model on a square lattice, using the dynamical vertex approximation and the parquet approximation. These methods allow us to describe the mutual interference of spin-fluctuations in the particle-hole channel and superconducting fluctuations in the cooperon channel in an unbiased way. For small dopings we find predominant commensurable antiferromagnetic spin- and d-wave superconducting fluctuations; for larger doping incommensurate antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are concomitant to triplet s-wave superconducting fluctuations.
Neutron scattering is used to investigate the single-ion spin and orbital excitations below the Mott-Hubbard gap in CoO. Three excitations are reported at 0.870 $\pm$ 0.009 eV, 1.84 $\pm$ 0.03, and 2.30 $\pm$ 0.15 eV. These were parameterized within a weak crystal field scheme with an intra-orbital exchange of $J(dd)$=1.3 $\pm$ 0.2 eV and a crystal field splitting 10Dq=0.94 $\pm$ 0.10 eV. A reduced spin-orbit coupling of λ=-0.016 $\pm$ 0.003 eV is derived from dilute samples of Mg$_{0.97}$Co$_{0.03}$O, measured to remove complications due to spin exchange and structural distortion parameters w…
Co nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements were performed on various bilayered hydrate cobaltate Na_x(H_3O)_zCoO_2\cdot yH_2O with different values of the superconducting and magnetic-ordering temperatures, T_c and T_M, respectively. From measurements of the temperature and sample dependence of the NQR frequency, it was revealed that the NQR frequency is changed by the change of the electric field gradient (EFG) along the c axis ν_{zz} rather than the asymmetry of EFG within the ab-plane. In addition, it is considered that the change of ν_{zz} is gaverned mainly by the trigonal distort…
The two-dimensional Hubbard model exhibits superconductivity with d-wave symmetry even at half-filling in the presence of next-nearest neighbor hopping. Using plaquette cluster dynamical mean-field theory with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver, we reveal the non-Fermi liquid character of the metallic phase in proximity to the superconducting state. Specifically, the low-frequency scattering rate for momenta near (π, 0) varies non-monotonously at low temperatures, and the dc conductivity is T-linear at elevated temperatures with an upturn upon cooling. Evidence is provided t…
We use the variational cluster approximation to study the superconducting ground state in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model, putting particular emphasis on the significance of quantum fluctuations of the system. We first show that the order parameter is suppressed in comparison with that obtained using the mean-field theory owing to the effects of spatial fluctuations in two-dimensional systems. We then show that the calculated Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectra and condensation amplitude clearly exhibit the character of Cooper pairs in momentum space and that the pair coherence lengt…
We consider a Fermi gas that is loaded onto a square optical lattice and subjected to a perpendicular artificial magnetic field, and determine its superfluid transition boundary by adopting a BCS-like mean-field approach in momentum space. The multi-band structure of the single-particle Hofstadter spectrum is taken explicitly into account while deriving a generalized pairing equation. We present the numerical solutions as functions of the artificial magnetic flux, interaction strength, Zeeman field, chemical potential, and temperature, with a special emphasis on the roles played by the density…
We start with a variational approach and derive a set of coupled integral equations for the bound states of $N$ identical spin-$\uparrow$ fermions and a single spin-$\downarrow$ fermion in a generic multiband Hubbard Hamiltonian with an attractive onsite interaction. As an illustration we apply our integral equations to the one-dimensional sawtooth lattice up to $N \le 3$, i.e., to the $(3+1)$-body problem, and reveal not only the presence of tetramer states in this two-band model but also their quasi-flat dispersion when formed in a flat band. Furthermore, for $N = \{4, 5, \cdots, 10 \}$, our…
Local spin fluctuations provide the glue for orbital-singlet spin-triplet pairing in the doped Mott insulating regime of multi-orbital Hubbard models. At large Hubbard repulsion $U$, the pairing susceptibility is nevertheless very low, because the pairing interaction cannot overcome the suppression of charge fluctuations. Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean field simulations of the two-orbital Hubbard model, we show that out of equilibrium the pairing susceptibility in this large-$U$ regime can be strongly enhanced by creating a photo-induced population of the relevant charge states, and that …
The peculiar correlation effects on the triangular lattice are studied by means of the rotationally invariant slave boson method in a cellular cluster approach. Hence nonlocal correlations are included in a short-range regime. Their impact for the single-band Hubbard model is studied at half filling, i.e., on the Mott transition, and with doping. Using the realistic band structure of Na$_x$CoO$_2$, we may also shed light on the cobaltate physics for $x$$\ge$1/3, with the in-plane transition from antiferromagnetic tendencies towards the onset of ferromagnetism for a finite Hubbard $U$.
