This work investigates a d-p Hubbard model by the n-pole approximation in the hole-doped regime. In particular, the spectral function $A(ω,\vec{k})$ is analyzed varying the filling, the local Coulomb interaction and the $d-p$ hybridization. It should be remarked that the original n-pole approximation (Phys. Rev. 184 (1969) 451) has been improved in order to include adequately the $\vec{k}$-dependence of the important correlation function $< \vec{S}_j\cdot\vec{S}_i>$ present in the poles of the Green's functions. It has been verified that the topology of the Fermi surface (defined by $A(ω=0,\vec{k})$) is deeply affected by the doping, the strength of the Coulomb interaction and also by the hybridization. Particularly, in the underdoped regime, the spectral function $A(ω=0,\vec{k})$ presents very low intensity close to the anti-nodal points $(0,\pm π)$ and $(\pm π,0)$. Such a behavior produces an anomalous Fermi surface (pockets) with pseudogaps in the region of the anti-nodal points. On the other hand, if the $d-p$ hybridization is enhanced sufficiently, such pseudogaps vanish. It is precisely the correlation function $< \vec{S}_j\cdot\vec{S}_i>$ present in the poles of the Green's functions which plays the important role in the underdoped situation. In fact, antiferromagnetic correlations coming from $< \vec{S}_j\cdot\vec{S}_i>$ strongly modify the quasi-particle band structure. This is the ultimate source of anomalies in the Fermi surface in the present approach.
We calculate the spectral weight of the one- and two-dimensional Hubbard models, by performing exact diagonalizations of finite clusters and treating inter-cluster hopping with perturbation theory. Even with relatively modest clusters (e.g. 12 sites), the spectra thus obtained give an accurate description of the exact results. Thus, spin-charge separation (i.e. an extended spectral weight bounded by singularities) is clearly recognized in the one-dimensional Hubbard model, and so is extended spectral weight in the two-dimensional Hubbard model.
We study the electronic spectral properties in two examples of strongly interacting systems: a Mott-Hubbard insulator with additional electron-boson interactions, and a polaronic semiconductor. An approximate unified framework is developed for the high energy part of the spectrum, in which the electrons move in a random field determined by the interplay between magnetic and bosonic fluctuations. When the boson under consideration is a lattice vibration, the resulting isotope effect on the spectral properties is similar in both cases, being strongly temperature and energy dependent, in qualitat…
We calculate the excitation spectra of a spin-polarized Hubbard chain away from half-filling, using a high-precision momentum-resolved time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group method. Focusing on the U<0 case, we present in some detail the single-fermion, pair, density and spin spectra, and discuss how spin-charge separation is altered for this system. The pair spectra show a quasi-condensate at a nonzero momentum proportional to the polarization, as expected for this Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-like superfluid.
A Dynamical Mean Field Theory analysis of the attractive Hubbard model is carried out. We focus on the normal state upon restricting to solutions where superconducting order is not allowed. Nevertheless a clear first-order pairing transition as a function of the coupling takes place at all the electron densities out of half-filling. The transition occurs between a Fermi liquid, stable for $U < U_c$, and an insulating bound pairs phase for $U > U_c$. The spectral function in the Fermi liquid phase is constituted by a low energy structure around the Fermi level (similar to the Kondo resonance of…
The single-particle spectral properties near the Mott transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping are investigated by using cluster perturbation theory. Complicated spectral features of this model are simply interpreted, by considering how the next-nearest-neighbor hopping shifts the spectral weights of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Various anomalous features observed in hole-doped and electron-doped cuprate high-temperature superconductors are explained in a unified manner as properties near the Mott transition in a two-dimensional system whose spec…
The Dynamic Hubbard Model represents the physics of a multi-band Hubbard model by using a pseudo-spin degree of freedom to dynamically modify the on-site Coulomb interaction. Here we use a dimer system to obtain analytical results for this model. The spectral function and the optical conductivity are calculated analytically for any number of electrons, and the distribution of optical spectral weight is analyzed in great detail. The impact of polaron-like effects due to overlaps between pseudo-spin states on the optical spectral weight distribution is derived analytically. Our conclusions suppo…
In the half-filled one-orbital Hubbard model on a square lattice, we find pseduogap features in the form of two-peak structures associated with the momentum-resolved spectral function, which exists within the temperature window $T_N \lesssim T \lesssim T^*$. $T^*$ is the temperature below which there exists a well-formed dip in the density of state. Inside the window $T_N \lesssim T \lesssim T^*$, the peak-to-peak separation in the two-peak structure of the momentum-resolved spectral function rises on moving away from the point ($π/2, π/2$) along the normal state Fermi surface towards $(π, 0)$…
Deviations from Fermi liquid behavior are well documented in the normal state of the cuprate superconductors, and some of these differences are possibly related to pre-formed pairs appearing at temperatures above T_c. In order to test these ideas we have investigated the attractive Hubbard model within a self-consistent, conserving ladder approximation. In this version of the theory, no feature is present which can be related to the pseudo gap found in the high-T_c materials. Further, the interactions between two-particle bound states change the physics of the superconducting instability in a …
Dynamic Hubbard models have been proposed as extensions of the conventional Hubbard model to describe the orbital relaxation that occurs upon double occupancy of an atomic orbital. These models give rise to pairing of holes and superconductivity in certain parameter ranges. Here we explore the changes in carrier effective mass and quasiparticle weight and in one- and two-particle spectral functions that occur in a dynamic Hubbard model upon pairing, by exact diagonalization of small systems. It is found that pairing is associated with lowering of effective mass and increase of quasiparticle we…
It is found that the finite-energy spectral properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model are controlled by the scattering of charged $η$-spin-zero $2ν$-holon composite objects, spin-zero $2ν$-spinon composite objects, and charged $η$-spin-less and spin-less objects, rather than by the scattering of independent $η$-spin 1/2 holons and spin 1/2 spinons. Here $ν=1,2,...$. The corresponding $S$ matrix is calculated and its relation to the spectral properties is clarified.
The ionic Hubbard model is investigated at half filling at zero temperature. We apply the cellular dynamical mean-field theory to the one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model to compute local quantities such as double occupancy and staggered charge density. Both quantities provide general transition behavior of the model from a band insulating phase to a Mott insulating phase. The renormalized band gap is introduced as an efficient order parameter for the transition from a band insulator. We also present the spectral properties of the ionic Hubbard model, which exhibit characteristic features for b…
The ionic Hubbard model on a cubic lattice is investigated using analytical approximations and Wilson's renormalization group for the charge excitation spectrum. Near the Mott insulating regime, where the Hubbard repulsion starts to dominate all energies, the formation of correlated bands is described. The corresponding partial spectral weights and local densities of states show characteristic features, which compare well with a hybridized-band picture appropriate for the regime at small $U$, which at half-filling is known as a band insulator. In particular, a narrow charge gap is obtained at …
Employing dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations we show that the single particle spectral weight A(k,w) of the one-band two-dimensional Hubbard model displays a high energy kink in the quasiparticle dispersion followed by a steep dispersion of a broad peak similar to recent ARPES results reported for the cuprates. Based on the agreement between the Monte Carlo results and a simple calculation which couples the quasiparticle to spin fluctuations, we conclude that the kink and the broad spectral feature in the Hubbard model spectra is due to scattering with damped high energy spin f…
We investigate the dynamical superlattice correlation in the two-dimensional three-band Hubbard model on the basis of the unrestricted fluctuation exchange approximation. We calculate the one-particle spectral function, the spin correlation function and the charge correlation function at finite temperature. We find that some experimental results can be reproduced consistenly by taking inhomogenous distribution of Cu 3d electrons into account. The correlation functions suggest that several kinds of instabilities with spatial inhomogenieties exist in some regions, where these instabilities signi…
The one-electron spectral-weight function of the half-filled ionic Hubbard model is calculated by means of Quantum Monte Carlo. A metallic regimen occurs between two values of the coupling constant (Hubbard U) U1 < U2 . The system is a band insulator below U1, and an increasingly antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator above U2 evolving into a Mott insulator as U tends to infinity . The intermediate regimen which is both AF and dimerized, is caused by a two-peak structure at k = 0,5 pi (the Fermi surface). As U increases both peaks approach each other, overlap, and separate again, the system becoming…
The spectral potential is the dynamical generalization of the Kohn-Sham potential. It targets, in principle exactly, the spectral function in addition to the electronic density. Here we examine the spectral potential in one of the simplest solvable models exhibiting a non-trivial interplay between electron-electron interaction and inhomogeneity, namely the asymmetric Hubbard dimer. We discuss a general strategy to introduce approximations, which consists in calculating the spectral potential in the homogeneous limit (here represented by the symmetric Hubbard dimer) and importing it in the real…
The two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model is studied in the weak to intermediate coupling regime by employing a non-perturbative approach. It is first shown that this approach is in quantitative agreement with Monte Carlo calculations for both single-particle and two-particle quantities. Both the density of states and the single-particle spectral weight show a pseudogap at the Fermi energy below some characteristic temperature T*, also in good agreement with quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The pseudogap is caused by critical pairing fluctuations in the low-temperature renormalized classic…
We study the temperature dependence of the single particle spectral function as well as of the dynamical spin and charge structure factors for the one-dimensional Hubbard model using the finite temperature auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. The parameters of our simulations are chosen so to at best describe the low temperature photoemission spectra of the organic conductor TTF-TCNQ. Defining a magnetic energy scale, T_J, which marks the onset of short ranged 2k_f magnetic fluctuations, we conclude that for temperatures T < T_J the ground state features of the single particle spectr…
We use an exact holon and spinon Landau-liquid functional which describes the holon - spinon interactions at all scattering orders, to study correlation functions of integrable multicomponent many-particle problems showing both linear and non-linear energy bands. We consider specific cases when the dominant non-linear band terms are quadratic and apply our results to the evaluation of the 1D Hubbard model correlation functions beyond conformal-field theory.
Single-particle spectral properties near the Mott transition in the one-dimensional Hubbard model are investigated by using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method and the Bethe ansatz. The pseudogap, hole-pocket behavior, spectral-weight transfer, and upper Hubbard band are explained in terms of spinons, holons, antiholons, and doublons. The Mott transition is characterized by the emergence of a gapless mode whose dispersion relation extends up to the order of hopping t (spin exchange J) in the weak (strong) interaction regime caused by infinitesimal doping.
Here the line shape of the up- and down-spin one-particle spectral functions at and in the (k,energy)-plane's vicinity of their cusp singularities is studied for the Mott-Hubbard insulator described by the 1D Hubbard model with one fermion per site at zero and finite magnetic fields. At zero field they can be accessed in terms of electrons by photoemission experiments. At finite field, such functions and corresponding interplay of correlations and magnetic-field effects refer to an involved non-perturbative many-particle problem that is poorly understood. The Mott-Hubbard gap that separates th…
We study the spectral function of the 2D Hubbard model using cluster perturbation theory, and the density matrix renormalization group as a cluster solver. We reconstruct the two-dimensional dispersion at, and away from half-filling using 2xL ladders, with L up to 80 sites, yielding results with unprecedented resolution in excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo. The main features of the spectrum can be described with a mean-field dispersion, while kinks and pseudogap traced back to scattering between spin and charge degrees of freedom.
The momentum, electronic density, spin density, and interaction dependences of the exponents that control the $(k,ω)$-plane singular features of the $σ=\uparrow,\downarrow$ one-electron spectral functions of the 1D Hubbard model at finite magnetic field are studied. The usual half-filling concepts of one-electron lower Hubbard band and upper Hubbard band are defined for all electronic density and spin density values and the whole finite repulsion range in terms of the rotated electrons associated with the model Bethe-ansatz solution. Such rotated electrons are the link of the non-perturbative …
We use an exact {\it holon} and {\it spinon} Landau-liquid functional which describes the holon - spinon interactions at all scattering orders, to study correlation functions of integrable multicomponent many-particle problems showing both linear and non-linear energy bands. Motivated by recent photoemission experiments, we consider specific cases when the dominant non-linear band terms are quadratic and apply our results to the evaluation of the half-filling 1D Hubbard model one-particle spectral functions beyond conformal-field theory.
We calculate the photoemission spectral function of the one-dimensional Hubbard model away from half filling using the dynamical density matrix renormalization group method. An approach for calculating momentum-dependent quantities in finite open chains is presented. Comparison with exact Bethe Ansatz results demonstrates the unprecedented accuracy of our method. Our results show that the photoemission spectrum of the quasi-one-dimensional conductor TTF-TCNQ provides evidence for spin-charge separation on the scale of the conduction band width.
In this paper we derive general expressions for few-electron spectral functions of the one-dimensional Hubbard model for values of the excitation energy in the vicinity of the $M^{th}$ upper-Hubbard band lower limit. Here $M=1,2,...$ is the rotated-electron double occupation, which vanishes for the ground state and is a good quantum number for all values of the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$. Our studies rely on a combination of symmetries of the model with a recent finite-energy holon and spinon description of the quantum problem. We apply our general scheme to the one-electron addition spectr…
We give the details of the calculation of the spectral functions of the 1D Hubbard model using the spin-charge factorized wave-function for several versions of the U -> +\infty limit. The spectral functions are expressed as a convolution of charge and spin dynamical correlation functions. A procedure to evaluate these correlation functions very accurately for large systems is developed, and analytical results are presented for the low energy region. These results are fully consistent with the conformal field theory. We also propose a direct method of extracting the exponents from the matrix el…
The spectral weight evolution of the low-dimensional Mott insulator TiOCl upon alkali-metal dosing has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy. We observe a spectral weight transfer between the lower Hubbard band and an additional peak upon electron-doping, in line with quantitative expectations in the atomic limit for changing the number of singly and doubly occupied sites. This observation is an unconditional hallmark of correlated bands and has not been reported before. In contrast, the absence of a metallic quasiparticle peak can be traced back to a simple one-particle effect.
In the first paper of this series it was found that the $η$-spin 1/2 holons, spin 1/2 spinons, and $c$ pseudoparticles whose occupancy configurations describe the energy eigenstates of the one-dimensional Hubbard model emerge from the electron - rotated-electron unitary transformation. In this second paper we discuss and clarify how the relation of the electrons to the above objects can be used in a program for evaluation of finite-energy few-electron spectral functions. As a first step, here we characterize the dominant holon and spinon microscopic physical processes that originate more than …
Spectral properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model near the Mott transition are investigated by using cluster perturbation theory. The Mott transition is characterized by freezing of the charge degrees of freedom in a single-particle excitation that leads continuously to the magnetic excitation of the Mott insulator. Various anomalous spectral features observed in high-temperature superconductors are explained in a unified manner as properties near the Mott transition.
We calculate the one-electron spectral function of the attractive-U Hubbard model in two dimensions. We work in the intermediate coupling and low density regime and evaluate analytically the self-energy. The results are obtained in a framework based on the self-consistent T-matrix approximation. We also calculate the chemical potential of the bound pairs as a function of temperature. On the basis of this calculation we analyze the low-temperature resistivity and specific heat in the normal state of this system. We compare our results with recent beautiful tunneling experiments in the underdope…
We present momentum resolved single-particle spectra for the three-dimensional Hubbard model for the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetically ordered phase obtained within the dynamical cluster approximation. The effective cluster problem is solved by continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The absence of a time discretization error and the ability to perform Monte Carlo measurements directly in Matsubara frequencies enable us to analytically continue the self-energies by maximum entropy, which is essential to obtain momentum resolved spectral functions for the N'eel state. We investiga…
The spectral weight of states induced in the Mott gap via hole doping in the two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied within cluster dynamical mean field theory combined with finite-temperature exact diagonalization. If the cutoff energy is chosen to lie just below the upper Hubbard band, the integrated weight per spin is shown to satisfy $W_+(δ)\geδ$ ($δ$ denotes the total number of holes), in agreement with model predictions by Eskes {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 67}, 1035 (1991)]. However, if the cutoff energy is chosen to lie in the range of the pseudogap, $W_+(δ)$ remains much small…
Spectral ellipsometry has been used to determine the dielectric function of an untwinned crystal of LaMnO_3 in the spectral range 0.5-5.6 eV at temperatures 50 K < T < 300 K. A pronounced redistribution of spectral weight is found at the Neel temperature T_N = 140 K. The anisotropy of the spectral weight transfer matches the magnetic ordering pattern. A superexchange model quantitatively describes spectral weight transfer induced by spin correlations. This analysis implies that the lowest-energy transitions around 2 eV are intersite d-d transitions, and that LaMnO_3 is a Mott-Hubbard insulator…
The number of electronic bands is usually considered invariant regardless of the electron density in a band picture. However, in interacting systems, the spectral-weight distribution generally changes depending on the electron density, and electronic states can even emerge or disappear as the electron density changes. Here, to clarify how electronic states emerge and become dominant as the electron density changes, the spectral function of the Hubbard ladder with strong repulsion and strong intrarung hopping is studied using the non-Abelian dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group method…
We investigated the optical properties of (Ca,Sr)RuO_3 films on the borderline of a metal-insulator (M-I) transition. Our results show all of the predicted characteristics for a metallic Mott-Hubbard system, including (i) a mass enhancement in dc-limit, (ii) an U/2 excitation, and (iii) an U excitation. Also, a self-consistency is found within the Gutzwiller-Brinkman-Rice picture for the Mott transition. Our finding displays that electron correlation should be important even in 4d materials.
We use non-equilibrium dynamical mean-field theory in combination with a recently developed Quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver to study the real-time dynamics of a Hubbard model which is driven out of equilibrium by a sudden increase in the on-site repulsion U. We discuss the implementation of the self-consistency procedure and some important technical improvements of the QMC method. The exact numerical solution is compared to iterated perturbation theory, which is found to produce accurate results only for weak interaction or short times. Furthermore we calculate the spectral functions and t…
The spectral functions of the one-band half-filled 1D Hubbard chain are calculated using the exchange-correlation potential formalism developed recently. The exchange-correlation potential is adopted from the exact potential derived from the Hubbard dimer. Within an approximation in which the full Green function is replaced by a non-interacting one, the spectral functions can be calculated analytically. Despite the simplicity of the approximation, the resulting spectra are in favorable agreement with the more accurate results obtained from the dynamic density-matrix renormalization group metho…
A dynamical theory which accounts for all microscopic one-electron processes is used to study the spectral function of the 1D Hubbard model for the whole $(k, ω)$-plane, beyond previous studies which focused on the weight distribution in the vicinity of the singular branch lines only. While our predictions agree with those of the latter studies concerning the tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) related singular features in photoemission of the organic compound tetrathiafulvalene-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TTF-TCNQ) metallic phase, the generalized theory also leads to quantitative agreement concerni…
The one-electron spectral function of the Holstein-Hubbard bipolaron in one dimension is studied using cluster perturbation theory together with the Lanczos method. In contrast to other approaches, this allows one to calculate the spectrum at continuous wave vectors and thereby to study, for the first time, the dispersion and the spectral weight of quasiparticle features. The formation of polarons and bipolarons, and their manifestation in the spectral properties of the system, is studied for the cases of intermediate and large phonon frequencies, with and without Coulomb interaction. A good a…
In this paper we study the dominant microscopic processes that generate nearly the whole one-electron removal and addition spectral weight of the one-dimensional Hubbard model for all values of the on-site repulsion $U$. We find that for the doped Mott-Hubbard insulator there is a competition between the microscopic processes that generate the one-electron upper-Hubbard band spectral-weight distributions of the Mott-Hubbard insulating phase and finite-doping-concentration metallic phase, respectively. The spectral-weight distributions generated by the non-perturbative processes studied here ar…
We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge …
We examine the quasiparticle lifetime and spectral weight near the Fermi surface in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. We use the FLEX approximation to self-consistently generate the Matsubara Green's functions and then we analytically continue to the real axis to obtain the quasiparticle spectral functions. We compare the spectral functions found in the nearest neighbor hopping only Hubbard model with those found when second neighbor hopping is included. This separates the effects of nesting, the Van Hove singularity and the short-ranged antiferromagnetic correlations. The quasiparticle scatt…
The equation for the electron Green's function of the fermionic Hubbard model, derived using the strong coupling diagram technique, is solved self-consistently for the near-neighbor form of the kinetic energy and for half-filling. In this case the Mott transition occurs at the Hubbard repulsion $U_c\approx 6.96t$, where $t$ is the hopping constant. The calculated spectral functions, density of states and momentum distribution are compared with results of Monte Carlo simulations. A satisfactory agreement was found for $U>U_c$ and for temperatures, at which magnetic ordering and spin correlation…
A recent article suggested that the saturation of low energy spectral weight observed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the cuprates at high hole doping could be explained within the single-band Hubbard model. We show that this result is an artifact of inappropriate integration limits.
The interpretation of the k dependent spectral functions of the one-dimensional, infinite U Hubbard model obtained by using the factorized wave-function of Ogata and Shiba is revisited. The well defined feature which appears in addition to low energy features typical of Luttinger liquids, and which, close to the Fermi energy, can be interpreted as the shadow band resulting from $2k_F$ spin fluctuations, is further investigated. A calculation of the self-energy shows that, not too close to the Fermi energy, this feature corresponds to a band, i.e. to a solution of the Dyson equation $ω- ε(k) - …
We use the continuous-time interaction expansion (CT-INT) quantum Monte Carlo method to calculate the phonon spectral function of the one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model at half-filling. Our results are consistent with a soft-mode Peierls transition in the adiabatic regime, and the existence of a central peak related to long-range order in the Peierls phase. We explain a previously observed feature at small momenta in terms of a hybridization of charge and phonon excitations. Tuning the system from a Peierls to a metallic phase with a nonzero Hubbard interaction suppresses the central peak,…
We present the continued fraction method (CFM) as a new microscopic approximation to the spectral density of the Hubbard model in the correlated metal phase away from half filling. The quantity expanded as a continued fraction is the single particle Green function. Leading spectral moments are taken into account through a set of real expansion coefficients, as known from the projection technique. The new aspect is to add further stages to the continued fraction, with complex coefficients, thus defining a terminator function. This enables us to treat the entire spectral range of the Green funct…
A challenge - and opportunity - is offered to the Hubbard Model community of solutions extant for the strong coupling region. A rigorous and quantitatively demanding test - a Computer Lab - is presented based on certain exact results for the strong coupling limit derived in a companion paper. The test offers rich insights into the essential physics of the model, specifically the quasiparticle energy and width of the spectral weight function in the lower Hubbard band. The width of the spectral weight function, related to electron scattering, is large and has a strong momentum dependence, even f…
We develop an efficient method to calculate the third-order corrections to the self-energy of the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model in space-time representation. Using the Dyson equation we evaluate the renormalized spectral function in various parts of the Brillouin zone and find significant modifications with respect to the second-order theory even for rather small values of the coupling constant U. The spectral function becomes unphysical for $ U \simeq W $, where W is the half-width of the conduction band. Close to the Fermi surface and for U<W, the single-particle spectral weight i…
Using recently developed quantum SU(2)xU(1) rotor approach, that provides a self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state we have performed electronic spectral function calculations for the Hubbard model on the square lattice. The collective variables for charge and spin are isolated in the form of the space-time fluctuating U(1) phase field and rotating spin quantization axis governed by the SU(2) symmetry, respectively. As a result interacting electrons appear as composite objects consisting of bare fermions with attached U(1) and SU(2) gauge fields. This allows us to write the fe…
We study the effect of varying the boundary condition on the spectral function of a finite 1D Hubbard chain, which we compute using direct (Lanczos) diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. By direct comparison with the two-body response functions and with the exact solution of the Bethe Ansatz equations, we can identify both spinon and holon features in the spectra. At half-filling the spectra have the well-known structure of a low energy holon band and its shadow---which span the whole Brillouin zone---and a spinon band present for momenta less than the Fermi momentum. New features related to the…
We study the difference between on site Hubbard and long range Coulomb repulsions for two interacting particles in a disordered chain. While Hubbard repulsion can only yield weak critical chaos with intermediate spectral statistics, Coulomb repulsion can drive the two particle system to quantum chaos with Wigner-Dyson spectral statistics. For intermediate strengths U of the two repulsions in one dimension, there is a crossover regime where delocalization and spectral rigidity are maximum, whereas the limits of weak and strong U are characterized by a stronger localization and uncorrelated ener…
We present spectral and optical properties of the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice using a generalization of dynamical mean-field theory to magnetic states in finite dimension. The self-energy includes the effect of spin fluctuations and screening of the Coulomb interaction due to particle-particle scattering. At half-filling the quasiparticles reduce the width of the Mott-Hubbard `gap' and have dispersions and spectral weights that agree remarkably well with quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization calculations. Away from half-filling we consider incommensurate magnetic …
