We explore possible physical origin of correlation between radio wave and very-high-energy neutrino emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN), suggested by recently reported evidence for correlation between neutrino arrival directions and positions of brightest radio-loud AGN. We show that such correlation is expected if both synchrotron emitting electrons and neutrinos originate from decays of charged pions produced in proton-proton interactions in parsec-scale relativistic jet propagating through circum-nuclear medium of the AGN.
Recently, the IC/CMB X-ray mechanism has been strongly disfavoured for 3C 273 and PKS 0637-752 since the anomalously hard and steady gamma-ray emission predicted by such models violates the observational results from Fermi-LAT. Here we propose the proton synchrotron origin of the X ray-gamma ray flux from the knots of PKS 0637-752 with a reasonable budget in luminosity, by considering synchrotron radiation from an accelerated proton population. Moreover, for the source 3C 273, some of the optical data points could not be explained by electron synchrotron (Meyer et al. 2015), which we have incl…
We study the effect of Bethe-Heitler (BeHe) pair production on a proton synchrotron model for the prompt emission in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The possible parameter space of the model is constrained by consideration of the synchrotron radiation from the secondary BeHe pairs. We find two regimes of interest. 1) At high bulk Lorentz factor, large radius and low luminosity, proton synchrotron emission dominates and produces a spectrum in agreement with observations. For part of this parameter space, a subdominant (in the MeV band) power-law is created by the synchrotron emission of the BeHe pairs…
The multi-wavelength photon spectrum from the BL Lac object AP Librae extends from radio to TeV gamma rays. The X-ray to very high energy gamma ray emission from the extended jet of this source has been modeled earlier with inverse Compton (IC) scattering of relativistic electrons off the CMB photons. The IC/CMB model requires the kpc scale extended jet to be highly collimated with bulk Lorentz factor close to 10. Here we discuss the possibility of proton synchrotron origin of X-rays and gamma-rays from the extended jet with bulk Lorentz factor 3. This scenario requires extreme energy of proto…
A small fraction of GRBs with available data down to soft X-rays ($\sim0.5$ keV) have been shown to feature a spectral break in the low-energy part ($\sim1-10$ keV) of their prompt emission spectrum. The overall spectral shape is consistent with optically thin synchrotron emission from a population of particles that have cooled on a timescale comparable to the dynamic time to energies that are still much higher than their rest mass energy (marginally fast cooling regime). We consider a hadronic scenario and investigate if the prompt emission of these GRBs can originate from relativistic proton…
We discuss the new surprising observational results that indicate quite convincingly that the prompt emission of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) is due to synchrotron radiation produced by a particle distribution that has a low energy cut-off. The evidence of this is provided by the low energy part of the spectrum of the prompt emission, that shows the characteristic F(nu) \propto nu^(1/3) shape followed by F(nu) \propto nu^(-1/2) up to the peak frequency. This implies that although the emitting particles are in fast cooling, they do not cool completely. This poses a severe challenge to the basic idea…
Fermi gamma-ray telescope data of GRB 080916C with ~1e55 erg in apparent isotropic gamma-ray energy, show a several second delay between the rise of 100 MeV - GeV radiation compared with keV - MeV radiation. Here we show that synchrotron radiation from cosmic ray protons accelerated in GRBs, delayed by the proton synchrotron cooling timescale in a jet of magnetically-dominated shocked plasma moving at highly relativistic speeds with bulk Lorentz factor Gamma ~ 500, could explain this result. A second generation electron synchrotron component from attenuated proton synchrotron radiation makes e…
The current very high energy (VHE; E>100GeV) experiments have tremendously increased the number of detected extragalactic sources. We present a synchrotron self-Compton modeling tour of the active galactic nuclei currently established as VHE emitters so far, and investigate possible correlations among the intrinsic and derived parameters.
We study pion production from proton synchrotron radiation in the presence of strong magnetic fields. We derive the exact proton propagator from the Dirac equation in a strong magnetic field by explicitly including the anomalous magnetic moment. In this exact quantum-field approach the magnitude of pion synchrotron emission turns out to be much smaller than that obtained in the semi-classical approach. However, we also find that the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton greatly enhances the production rate about by two order magnitude.
In the present work we propose an innovative estimation method for the minimum Doppler factor and energy content of the gamma-ray emitting region of quasar 3C 279, using a standard proton synchrotron blazar model and the principles of automatic photon quenching. The latter becomes relevant for high enough magnetic fields and results in spontaneous annihilation of gamma-rays. The absorbed energy is then redistributed into electron-positron pairs and soft radiation. We show that as quenching sets an upper value for the source rest-frame gamma-ray luminosity, one has, by neccessity, to resort to …
In the present paper we study generation of the synchrotron emission by means of the feedback of Cherenkov drift waves on the particle distribution via the diffusion process. It is shown that despite the efficient synchrotron losses the excited Cherenkov drift instability leads to the quasi-linear diffusion (QLD), effect of which is balanced by dissipation factors and as a result the pitch angles are prevented from damping, maintaining the corresponding synchrotron emission. The model is analyzed for a wide range of physical parameters and it is shown that the mechanism of QLD guarantees the g…
In this paper, transient high energy events and their hosts are discussed with focus on signatures of radio synchrotron emission. Outstanding questions range from the origin of the two phases of radio emission in supernovae to the formation of conical jets launched at relativistic velocities in active nuclei to the formation of radio hotspots in FR II sources to the formation of radio relics and halos in clusters of galaxies to the origin of the relativistic electron population and its energy spectrum which is responsible for the synchrotron emission to the composition of the radio synchrotron…
The acceleration cites of ultra-high-energy (UHE) protons can be traced by the footprint left by these particles propagating through cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Secondary electrons produced in extended region of several tens of Mpc emit their energy via synchrotron radiation predominantly in the initial direction of the parent protons. It forms a non-variable and compact (almost point-like) source of high energy gamma rays. The importance of this effect is increased for cosmologically distant objects; because of severe energy losses, UHE protons cannot achieve us even in the c…
The origin of high-energy emission in blazars jets (i.e., leptonic versus hadronic) has been a long-standing matter of debate. Here, we focus on one variant of hadronic models where proton synchrotron radiation accounts for the observed steady $γ$-ray blazar emission. Using analytical methods, we derive the minimum jet power ($P_{j,\min}$) for the largest blazar sample analyzed to date (145 sources), taking into account uncertainties of observables and jet's physical parameters. We compare $P_{j,\min}$ against three characteristic energy estimators for accreting systems, i.e., the Eddington lu…
We report calculations of cosmic-ray proton, nuclei, antiproton, electron and positron energy spectra within a "two-halo model" of diffusive transport. The two halos represent a simple, physically consistent generalization of the standard diffusion models, which assume a unique type of diffusion for cosmic rays in the whole Galactic halo. We believe instead that cosmic rays may experience a smaller energy dependence of diffusion when they are in proximity of the Galactic disk. Our scenario is supported by recent observations of cosmic-ray protons, nuclei, anisotropy, and gamma-rays. We predict…
We study the role of the quasi-linear diffusion (QLD) in producing X-ray emission by means of ultra-relativistic electrons in AGN magnetospheric flows. We examined two regions: (a) an area close to the black hole and (b) the outer magnetosphere. The synchrotron emission has been studied for ultra-relativistic electrons and was shown that the QLD generates the soft and hard X-rays, close to the black hole and on the light cylinder scales respectively. By considering the cyclotron instability, we show that despite the short synchrotron cooling timescales, the cyclotron modes excite transverse an…
We investigated the possibility of acceleration of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) in nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using archival multi-wavelength observational data, and then we constrained their physical conditions, i.e., the luminosity of the synchrotron radiation and the size of the acceleration site. First, we investigated the spatial correlation between the arrival directions of UHECRs and the positions of nearby AGNs in the Fermi third gamma-ray source catalog. We selected 27 AGNs as candidates of accelerators of UHECRs. Then, we evaluated the physical conditions in the a…
The large scale jet of quasar 3C 273 has been observed in radio to $γ$ ray frequencies. Earlier the X-ray emission from knot A of this jet has been explained with inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background radiations by the shock accelerated relativistic electrons in the jet. More recently it has been shown that this mechanism overproduces the gamma ray flux at GeV energy and violates the observational results from Fermi LAT. We have considered the synchrotron emission from a broken power law spectrum of accelerated protons in the jet to explain the observed X-ray to $γ$ ray…
TXS 0506+056, a source of the extreme energy neutrino event, IceCube-170922A, was observed on 22 September 2017. The Fermi-LAT detector reported high energy (HE) $γ$-ray flare between 100 MeV and 100 GeV starting from 15 September 2017 from this source. Several attempts to trace the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray counterparts around the IceCube-170922A resulted in no success. Only after 28 September, the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes observed the first VHE gamma-rays from the blazar above 100 GeV. The $\sim$ 41 hr survey resulted in VHE-$γ$ ray activity til…
We study pion production by proton synchrotron radiation in the presence of a strong magnetic field when the Landau numbers of the initial and final protons are $n_{i,f} \sim 10^4 - 10^5$. We find in our relativistic field theory calculations that the pion decay width depends only on the field strength parameter which previously was only conjectured based upon semi-classical arguments. Moreover, we also find new results that the decay width satisfies a robust scaling relation, and that the polar angular distribution of emitted pion momenta is very narrow and can be easily obtained. This scalin…
The heating mechanism of a corona above an accretion disk in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is still unknown. One possible mechanism is magnetic reconnection heating requiring energy equipartition between magnetic energy and gas energy in the disk. Here, we investigate the expected observed properties in radio band from such a magnetized corona. A magnetized corona can generate synchrotron radiation since a huge amount of electrons exists. Although most of radiation would be absorbed by synchrotron self-absorption, high-frequency end of synchrotron emission can escape from a corona and appears …
Energy densities of relativistic electrons and protons in extended galactic and intracluster regions are commonly determined from spectral radio and (rarely) $γ$-ray measurements. The time-independent particle spectral density distributions are commonly assumed to have a power-law (PL) form over the relevant energy range. A theoretical relation between energy densities of electrons and protons is usually adopted, and energy equipartition is invoked to determine the mean magnetic field strength in the emitting region. We show that for typical conditions, in both star-forming and starburst galax…
In this paper three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of AGN jets are presented to investigate the FR I/FR II dichotomy. Three simulations are presented which illustrates the difference in morphology for high/low Lorentz factor injection as well as a stratified background medium. Lorentz factors of 10 and 1.0014 were used for the high and low Lorentz factor cases respectively. The hydrodynamic simulations show a division in the morphology of jets based on their initial injection luminosity. An additional simulation was set up to investigate the evolution of the low Lorentz fact…
