Solution processable two-dimensional (2D) materials have provided an ideal platform for both fundamental studies and wearable electronic applications. Apart from graphene and 2D dichalcogenides, IVA-VI monochalcogenides (MMCs) has emerged recently as a promising candidate for next generation electronic applications. However, the dispersion behavior, which is crucial for the quality, solubility and stability of MMCs, has been quite unexplored. Here, the exfoliation and the dispersion behavior of Germanium (II) monosulfide (GeS) and Tin (II) monosulfide (SnS) nanosheets has been investigated in a wide range of organic solvents. Nine different organic solvents were examined and analyzed, considering the solvent polarity, surface tension, and Hansen solubility parameters. A significant yield of isolated GeS and SnS flakes, namely ~16.4 and ~23.08 μg/ml in 2-propanol and N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone respectively were attained. The isolated flakes are few-layers nanosheets with lateral sizes over a few hundreds of nanometers. The MMCs colloids exhibit long-term stability, suggesting the MMCs applicability for scalable solution processable printed electronic device applications.
Using density functional theory, we explore the possibility of two monolayer monochalcogenides, namely, MoS and WS (buckled and puckered). Our results on cohesive energy and phonon dispersion predict that the buckled structures of both MoS and WS are stable. On the other hand, while the puckered structure of WS clearly shows a dynamical instability, the same for MoS may have a stable configuration. Charge analyses predict ionic-like bonding in these systems. Density of states and band structure reveal a non-magnetic metallic nature for MoS in the stable configurations. However, for the buckled…
Monolayer group-III monochalcogenides (MX, M = Ga, In; X = S, Se, Te), an emerging category of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, hold great promise for electronics, optoelectronics and catalysts. By first-principles calculations, we show that the phonon dispersion and Raman spectra as well as the electronic and topological properties of monolayer MX can be tuned by oxygen functionalization. Chemisorption of oxygen atoms on one side or both sides of the MX sheet narrows or even closes the band gap, enlarges work function, and significantly reduces the carrier effective mass. More excitingly,…
We show that the previously predicted Fermion particle that has no analogue in the standard model of particle theory - the cubically dispersed Dirac semimetal (CDSM) - is realized in a specific, stable solid state system that has been made years ago, but was not appreciated to host such a unique Fermion, composed of six Weyl Fermions, 3 with left-handed and 3 with right-handed chirality. We identified the crystal symmetry constraints and found the space group P63/m as one of the two that can support a CDSM, of which the characteristic band crossing has linear dispersion along the principle axi…
Using a combination of local spin density and Hubbard 1 approximations we study the mechansim of exchange interacion in EuX (X=O, S, Se and Te). We reproduce known experimental results about bulk modulus, critical pressure for structural phase transition, magnetic ordering temperature, spin--wave dispersions as well as momentum-- and tempearuture--dependent band shift. Our numerical results show pressure induced competition between the hybirization enhanced exchange interaction and Kondo--like coupling in EuO. Possible ways to enhance T_{c} are discussed.
The electronic structure of (group-III) metal-monochalcogenide monolayers exhibits many unusual features. Some, such as the unusually distorted upper valence band dispersion we describe as a 'caldera', are primarily the result of purely orbital interactions. Others, including spin splitting and wavefunction spin-mixing, are directly driven by spin-orbit coupling. We employ elementary group theory to explain the origins of these properties, and use a tight-binding model to calculate the phenomena enabled by them, such as band-edge carrier effective g-factors, optical absorption spectrum, conduc…
We survey the state-of-the-art knowledge of ferroelectric and ferroelastic group-IV monochalcogenide monolayers. These semiconductors feature remarkable structural and mechanical properties, such as a switchable in-plane spontaneous polarization, soft elastic constants, structural degeneracies, and thermally-driven two-dimensional structural transformations. Additionally, these 2D materials also display selective valley excitations, valley Hall effects, and persistent spin helix behavior. After a description of their Raman spectra, a discussion of optical properties arising from their lack of …
Structural degeneracies underpin the ferroic behavior of next-generation two-dimensional materials, and lead to peculiar two-dimensional structural transformations under external fields, charge doping and/or temperature. The most direct indicator of the ease of these transformations is an {\em elastic energy barrier}, defined as the energy difference between the (degenerate) structural ground state unit cell, and a unit cell with an increased structural symmetry. Proximity of a two-dimensional material to a bulk substrate can affect the magnitude of the critical fields and/or temperature at wh…
We have studied the electronic, magnetic and linear phonon dispersion behavior of Phosphorene monolayer using rst principle based ab initio method. Phosphorene monolayer is a semiconducting system with a dimensional dependent variable range of band gap. Vacancy has been done to study the geometry and physical behavior of the monolayer system. Pristine, vacancy induced monolayer and vacancy induced doped monolayer are included in the calculation. Dopant concentration has been well checked via optimization algorithm to maintain the dilute magnetic semiconducting behavior of the monolayer system.…
The solvent casted Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blend was recrystallized by the thermal treatment of a heating and cooling cycle. The high PEG content blend (30\%wt) showed a striking dispersion behavior, that the materials rapidly dispersed and dissolved in the aqueous environment in a few hours. This phenomenon has not been reported by others, and was not observed in low PEG content samples of 5\%, 10\%, and 20\%, or quenched(amorphous) samples. We hypothesized the mechanism that the chain rearrangement during the thermal treatment leads to the phase separation. An…
We investigate the electronic properties and electron correlations in a three-dimensional (3D) polaron system with tunable dispersion parameter in Fermi-liquid picture. The polaronic coupling is considered as a weakly attractive bare coupling. Both the single and many-polaron, zero and finite-temperature cases are considered in this paper. The physical quantities, including the self-energy, spectral function, optical conductivity (both the planar and 3D one), free energy, and momentum distribution function, are studied and are been verified exhibit Fermi-liquid features. Both the analytic deri…
We employ inelastic helium atom-surface scattering to measure the low energy phonon dispersion along high-symmetry directions on the surface of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Results indicate that one particular low-frequency branch experiences noticeable mode softening attributable to the interaction between Dirac fermion quasiparticles and phonons on the surface. This mode softening constitutes a renormalization of the real part of the phonon self-energy. We obtain the imaginary part, and hence lifetime information, via a Hilbert transform. In doing so we are able to calculate an av…
The phase behavior of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) nanoparticles dispersed in aqueous medium is investigated as a function of temperature using static and dynamic light scattering techniques. The diameter, d of the particles, as determined by dynamic light scattering measurements on dilute dispersion showed a decrease in size from 273 nm at 25C to 114 nm at 40C as function of temperature with a sudden collapse of particle volume (volume phase transition) at 32.4C. Further this nanoparticle dispersion is found to turn turbid beyond volume phase transition. Static light scattering measurements o…
Exciton dispersion as a function of center-of-mass momentum, \textbf{Q}, is essential to the understanding of exciton dynamics. We use the ab-initio GW-Bethe Salpeter equation method to calculate the dispersion of excitons in monolayer MoS$_2$ and find a nonanalytic light-like dispersion. This behavior arises from an unusual $|Q|$ term in both the intra- and inter-valley exchange of the electron-hole interaction, which concurrently gives rise to a valley quantum phase of winding number two. A simple effective Hamiltonian to $Q^2$ order with analytic solutions is derived to describe quantitativ…
Aqueous dispersion of Laponite, when exposed to carbon dioxide environment leads to in situ inducement of magnesium and lithium ions, which is, however absent when dispersion is exposed to air. Consequently, in the rheological experiments, Laponite dispersion preserved under carbon dioxide shows more spectacular enhancement in the elastic and viscous moduli as a function of time compared to that exposed to air. By measuring concentration of all the ions present in a dispersion as well as change in pH, the evolving inter-particle interactions among the Laponite particles is estimated. DLVO anal…
Plasmon excitations in graphene, silicene and germanene are studied using linear-response time dependent density functional theory within the random phase approximation (RPA). Here, we examine both the plasmon dispersion behavior and lifetime of extrinsic and intrinsic plasmons for these three materials. For extrinsic plasmons, we found that their properties are closely related to Landau damping. In the region without single-particle excitation (SPE), the plasmon dispersion shows a \sqrt{q} behavior and the lifetime is infinite at the RPA level, while in the single-particle excitation region, …
We propose a minimal model for spherical proteins with aeolotopic pair interactions to describe the equilibrium phase behavior of lysozyme. The repulsive screened Coulomb interactions between the particles are taken into account assuming that the net charges are smeared out homogeneously over the spherical protein surfaces. We incorporate attractive surface patches, with the interactions between patches on different spheres modeled by an attractive Yukawa potential. The parameters entering the attractive Yukawa potential part are determined using information on the experimentally accessed gas-…

We highlight the non-universality of the asymptotic behavior of dispersion forces, such that a sum of inverse sixth power contributions is often inadequate. We analytically evaluate the cross-correlation energy Ec between two pi-conjugated layers separated by a large distance D within the electromagnetically non-retarded Random Phase Approximation, via a tight-binding model. For two perfect semimetallic graphene sheets at T=0K we find Ec = C D^{-3}, in contrast to the "insulating" D^{-4} dependence predicted by currently accepted approximations. We also treat the case where one graphene layer …
