We consider the decentralized control of a discrete-time time-varying linear system subject to additive disturbances and polyhedral constraints on the state and input trajectories. The underlying system is composed of a finite collection of dynamically coupled subsystems, where each subsystem is assumed to have a dedicated local controller. The decentralization of information is expressed according to sparsity constraints on the state measurements that each local controller has access to. We investigate the design of decentralized controllers that are affinely parameterized in their measurement history. For problems with partially nested information structures, the optimization over such restricted policy spaces is known to be convex. Convexity is not, however, guaranteed under more general (nonclassical) information structures, where the information available to one local controller can be affected by control actions that it cannot reconstruct. To address the nonconvexity that arises in such problems, we propose an approach to decentralized control design where such information-coupling states are effectively treated as disturbances whose trajectories are constrained to take values in ellipsoidal "contract" sets whose location, scale, and orientation are jointly optimized with the underlying affine decentralized control policy. We establish a structural condition on the space of allowable contracts that facilitates the joint optimization over the control policy and the contract set via semidefinite programming.
Continuing the first part of the paper, we consider scalar decentralized average-cost infinite-horizon LQG problems with two controllers. This paper focuses on the slow dynamics case when the eigenvalue of the system is small and prove that the single-controller optimal strategies ---linear strategies--- are constant ratio optimal among all distributed control strategies.
We consider the problem of making a networked system contracting by designing minimal effort local controllers. Our method combines a hierarchical contraction characterization and a matrix-balancing approach to stabilizing a Metzler matrix via minimal diagonal perturbations. We demonstrate our approach by designing local controllers that render contractive a network of FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons with a general topology of interactions.
This paper investigates the design of decentralized output-feedback controllers for a class of a large scale switched nonlinear systems under arbitrary switching laws. A global large scale switched system can be split into a set of smaller interconnected switched Takagi Sugeno fuzzy subsystems. Then, in order to stabilize the overall closed-loop system, a set of switched non-PDC static output controllers is employed. The latter is designed based on Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions obtained from a multiple switched non quadratic-like Lyapunov candidate function. The controllers propose…
This paper considers the optimal decentralized control for networked control systems (NCSs) with asymmetric partial information sharing between two controllers. In this NCSs model, the controller 2 (C2) shares its observations and part of its historical control inputs with the controller 1 (C1), whereas C2 cannot obtain the information of C1 due to network constraints. We present the optimal estimators for C1 and C2 respectively based on asymmetric observations. Since the information for C1 and C2 are asymmetric, the estimation error covariance (EEC) is coupled with the controller which means …
We consider scalar decentralized average-cost infinite-horizon LQG problems with two controllers, focusing on the fast dynamics case when the (scalar) eigenvalue of the system is large. It is shown that the best linear controllers' performance can be an arbitrary factor worse than the optimal performance. We propose a set of finite-dimensional nonlinear controllers, and prove that the proposed set contains an easy-to-find approximately optimal solution that achieves within a constant ratio of the optimal quadratic cost. The insight for nonlinear strategies comes from revealing the relationship…
We consider the decentralized control of a discrete-time, linear system subject to exogenous disturbances and polyhedral constraints on the state and input trajectories. The underlying system is composed of a finite collection of dynamically coupled subsystems, where each subsystem is assumed to have a dedicated local controller. The decentralization of information is expressed according to sparsity constraints on the state measurements that each local controller has access to. In this context, we investigate the design of decentralized controllers that are affinely parameterized in their meas…
High-voltage direct current (HVDC) is a commonly used technology for long-distance electric power transmission, mainly due to its low resistive losses. When connecting multiple HVDC lines into a multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) system, several challenges arise. To ensure safe and efficient operation of MTDC systems, the voltage of all terminals need to be steered to within an operational range. In this paper we study the commonly used decentralized voltage droop controller, and show that it in general does not steer the voltages to within the operational range. We propose a decentralized PI controll…
We study the evolution of locally optimal decentralized controllers with the damping of the control system. Empirically it is shown that even for instances with an exponential number of connected components, damping merges all local solutions to the one global solution. We characterize the evolution of locally optimal solutions with the notion of hemi-continuity and further derive asymptotic properties of the objective function and of the locally optimal controllers as the damping becomes large. Especially, we prove that with enough damping, there is no spurious locally optimal controller with…
This paper presents a novel load frequency control (LFC) design using integral-based decentralize fixed-order perturbed dynamic output tracking scheme in a delay dependent nonlinear interconnected multi-area power system via LMI approach. The tracking controller is designed such that the effects of the parameter variations of the plant and dynamic output controller as well as load disturbances are minimized. The inputs and outputs of each controller are local, and these independent controllers are designed such that the robust stability of the overall closed-loop system is guaranteed. Simulati…
We consider the decentralized control of radial distribution systems with controllable photovoltaic inverters and energy storage resources. For such systems, we investigate the problem of designing fully decentralized controllers that minimize the expected cost of balancing demand, while guaranteeing the satisfaction of individual resource and distribution system voltage constraints. Employing a linear approximation of the branch flow model, we formulate this problem as the design of a decentralized disturbance-feedback controller that minimizes the expected value of a convex quadratic cost fu…
For a network of interconnected nonlinear dynamical systems an adaptive leader-follower output feedback synchronization problem is considered. The proposed structure of decentralized controller and adaptation algorithm is based on speed-gradient and passivity. Sufficient conditions of synchronization for nonidentical nodes are established. An example of synchronization of the network of nonidentical Chua systems is analyzed. The main contribution of the paper is adaptive controller design and analysis under conditions of incomplete measurements, incomplete control and uncertainty.
Local and inter-area oscillations in bulk power systems are typically identified using spatial profiles of poorly damped modes, and they are mitigated via carefully tuned decentralized controllers. In this paper, we employ non-modal tools to analyze and control inter-area oscillations. Our input-output analysis examines power spectral density and variance amplification of stochastically forced systems and offers new insights relative to modal approaches. To improve upon the limitations of conventional wide-area control strategies, we also study the problem of signal selection and optimal desig…
The paradigm of Cyber-Physical Systems of Systems (CPSoS) is becoming rather popular in the control systems research community because of its expressive power able to properly handle many engineered complex systems of interest. Decentralized control techniques offer a promising approach in taming the inherent complexity of CPSoS, also connected with the design of needed communication infrastructures and computing units. In this paper, we propose decentralized control of networks of discrete-time nonlinear control systems, enforcing complex specifications expressed in terms of regular languages…

In this work we present a constructive method to design a family of virtual contraction based controllers that solve the standard trajectory tracking problem of flexible-joint robots (FJRs) in the port-Hamiltonian (pH) framework. The proposed design method, called virtual contraction based control (v-CBC), combines the concepts of virtual control systems and contraction analysis. It is shown that under potential energy matching conditions, the closed-loop virtual system is contractive and exponential convergence to a predefined trajectory is guaranteed. Moreover, the closed-loop virtual system…

In this paper, we incorporate velocity observer design into the virtual decomposition control (VDC) strategy of an $n$-DoF open chain robotic manipulator. Descending from the VDC strategy, the proposed design is based on decomposing the $n$-DoF manipulator into subsystems, i.e., rigid links and joints, for which the decentralized controller-observer implementation can be done locally. Similar to VDC, the combined controller-observer design is passivity-based, and we show that it achieves semiglobal exponential convergence of the tracking error. The convergence analysis is carried out using Lya…
We take a unified view of network coding and decentralized control. Precisely speaking, we consider both as linear time-invariant systems by appropriately restricting channels and coding schemes of network coding to be linear time-invariant, and the plant and controllers of decentralized control to be linear time-invariant as well. First, we apply linear system theory to network coding. This gives a novel way of converting an arbitrary relay network to an equivalent acyclic single-hop relay network, which we call Network Linearization. Based on network linearization, we prove that the fundamen…

This paper considers a distributed reinforcement learning problem for decentralized linear quadratic control with partial state observations and local costs. We propose a Zero-Order Distributed Policy Optimization algorithm (ZODPO) that learns linear local controllers in a distributed fashion, leveraging the ideas of policy gradient, zero-order optimization and consensus algorithms. In ZODPO, each agent estimates the global cost by consensus, and then conducts local policy gradient in parallel based on zero-order gradient estimation. ZODPO only requires limited communication and storage even i…
This paper is concerned with coherent quantum control design for translation invariant networks of identical quantum stochastic systems subjected to external quantum noise. The network is modelled as an open quantum harmonic oscillator and is governed by a set of linear quantum stochastic differential equations. The dynamic variables of this quantum plant satisfy the canonical commutation relations. Similar large-scale systems can be found, for example, in quantum metamaterials and optical lattices. The problem under consideration is to design a stabilizing decentralized coherent quantum contr…
