Despite the popularity of guitar effects, there is very little existing research on classification and parameter estimation of specific plugins or effect units from guitar recordings. In this paper, convolutional neural networks were used for classification and parameter estimation for 13 overdrive, distortion and fuzz guitar effects. A novel dataset of processed electric guitar samples was assembled, with four sub-datasets consisting of monophonic or polyphonic samples and discrete or continuous settings values, for a total of about 250 hours of processed samples. Results were compared for networks trained and tested on the same or on a different sub-dataset. We found that discrete datasets could lead to equally high performance as continuous ones, whilst being easier to design, analyse and modify. Classification accuracy was above 80\%, with confusion matrices reflecting similarities in the effects timbre and circuits design. With parameter values between 0.0 and 1.0, the mean absolute error is in most cases below 0.05, while the root mean square error is below 0.1 in all cases but one.
We introduce a novel convolutional network architecture with an interpretable latent space for modeling guitar amplifiers. Leveraging domain knowledge of popular amplifiers spanning a range of styles, the proposed system intuitively combines or subtracts characteristics of different amplifiers, allowing musicians to design entirely new guitar timbres.

We present computational tools that we developed for the analysis of a large corpus of flamenco music recordings, along with the related exploratory findings. The proposed computational backend is based on a set of Convolutional Neural Networks that provide the structural annotation of each music recording with respect to the presence of vocals, guitar and hand-clapping ("palmas"). The resulting, automatically extracted annotations, allowed for the visualization of music recordings in structurally meaningful ways, the extraction of global statistics related to the instrumentation of flamenco m…
Majority of the recent approaches for text-independent speaker recognition apply attention or similar techniques for aggregation of frame-level feature descriptors generated by a deep neural network (DNN) front-end. In this paper, we propose methods of convolutional attention for independently modelling temporal and frequency information in a convolutional neural network (CNN) based front-end. Our system utilizes convolutional block attention modules (CBAMs) [1] appropriately modified to accommodate spectrogram inputs. The proposed CNN front-end fitted with the proposed convolutional attention…
We present in this paper a simple, yet efficient convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture for robust audio event recognition. Opposing to deep CNN architectures with multiple convolutional and pooling layers topped up with multiple fully connected layers, the proposed network consists of only three layers: convolutional, pooling, and softmax layer. Two further features distinguish it from the deep architectures that have been proposed for the task: varying-size convolutional filters at the convolutional layer and 1-max pooling scheme at the pooling layer. In intuition, the network tends…

We introduce Multi-Frame Cross-Entropy training (MFCE) for convolutional neural network acoustic models. Recognizing that similar to RNNs, CNNs are in nature sequence models that take variable length inputs, we propose to take as input to the CNN a part of an utterance long enough that multiple labels are predicted at once, therefore getting cross-entropy loss signal from multiple adjacent frames. This increases the amount of label information drastically for small marginal computational cost. We show large WER improvements on hub5 and rt02 after training on the 2000-hour Switchboard benchmark…
Chord recognition systems depend on robust feature extraction pipelines. While these pipelines are traditionally hand-crafted, recent advances in end-to-end machine learning have begun to inspire researchers to explore data-driven methods for such tasks. In this paper, we present a chord recognition system that uses a fully convolutional deep auditory model for feature extraction. The extracted features are processed by a Conditional Random Field that decodes the final chord sequence. Both processing stages are trained automatically and do not require expert knowledge for optimising parameters…

Emotion recognition has become an important field of research in the human-computer interactions domain. The latest advancements in the field show that combining visual with audio information lead to better results if compared to the case of using a single source of information separately. From a visual point of view, a human emotion can be recognized by analyzing the facial expression of the person. More precisely, the human emotion can be described through a combination of several Facial Action Units. In this paper, we propose a system that is able to recognize emotions with a high accuracy …

Deep Learning based Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models are very successful, but hard to interpret. To gain better understanding of how Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) accomplish their tasks, introspection methods have been proposed. Adapting such techniques from computer vision to speech recognition is not straight-forward, because speech data is more complex and less interpretable than image data. In this work, we introduce Gradient-adjusted Neuron Activation Profiles (GradNAPs) as means to interpret features and representations in Deep Neural Networks. GradNAPs are characteristic re…
Speaker recognition is the process of identifying a speaker based on the voice. The technology has attracted more attention with the recent increase in popularity of smart voice assistants, such as Amazon Alexa. In the past few years, various convolutional neural network (CNN) based speaker recognition algorithms have been proposed and achieved satisfactory performance. However, convolutional operations are building blocks that typically perform on a local neighborhood at a time and thus miss to capture global, long-range interactions at the feature level which are critical for understanding t…

This paper studies the emotion recognition from musical tracks in the 2-dimensional valence-arousal (V-A) emotional space. We propose a method based on convolutional (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN), having significantly fewer parameters compared with the state-of-the-art method for the same task. We utilize one CNN layer followed by two branches of RNNs trained separately for arousal and valence. The method was evaluated using the 'MediaEval2015 emotion in music' dataset. We achieved an RMSE of 0.202 for arousal and 0.268 for valence, which is the best result reported on this dataset…

End-to-end learning models using raw waveforms as input have shown superior performances in many audio recognition tasks. However, most model architectures are based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) which were mainly developed for visual recognition tasks. In this paper, we propose an extension of squeeze-and-excitation networks (SENets) which adds temporal feedback control from the top-layer features to channel-wise feature activations in lower layers using a recurrent module. This is analogous to the adaptive gain control mechanism of outer hair-cell in the human auditory system. We ap…

A large number of pornographic audios publicly available on the Internet seriously threaten the mental and physical health of children, but these audios are rarely detected and filtered. In this paper, we firstly propose a convolutional neural networks (CNN) based model for acoustic pornography recognition. Then, we research a collection of refinements and verify their effectiveness through ablation studies. Finally, we stack all refinements together to verify whether they can further improve the accuracy of the model. Experimental results on our newly-collected large dataset consisting of 224…

The effects of adding pitch and voice quality features such as jitter and shimmer to a state-of-the-art CNN model for Automatic Speech Recognition are studied in this work. Pitch features have been previously used for improving classical HMM and DNN baselines, while jitter and shimmer parameters have proven to be useful for tasks like speaker or emotion recognition. Up to our knowledge, this is the first work combining such pitch and voice quality features with modern convolutional architectures, showing improvements up to 7% and 3% relative WER points, for the publicly available Spanish Commo…
Deep convolutional neural networks are being actively investigated in a wide range of speech and audio processing applications including speech recognition, audio event detection and computational paralinguistics, owing to their ability to reduce factors of variations, for learning from speech. However, studies have suggested to favor a certain type of convolutional operations when building a deep convolutional neural network for speech applications although there has been promising results using different types of convolutional operations. In this work, we study four types of convolutional op…
Traditional methods to tackle many music information retrieval tasks typically follow a two-step architecture: feature engineering followed by a simple learning algorithm. In these "shallow" architectures, feature engineering and learning are typically disjoint and unrelated. Additionally, feature engineering is difficult, and typically depends on extensive domain expertise. In this paper, we present an application of convolutional neural networks for the task of automatic musical instrument identification. In this model, feature extraction and learning algorithms are trained together in an en…
We describe in this report our audio scene recognition system submitted to the DCASE 2016 challenge. Firstly, given the label set of the scenes, a label tree is automatically constructed. This category taxonomy is then used in the feature extraction step in which an audio scene instance is represented by a label tree embedding image. Different convolutional neural networks, which are tailored for the task at hand, are finally learned on top of the image features for scene recognition. Our system reaches an overall recognition accuracy of 81.2% and 83.3% and outperforms the DCASE 2016 baseline …
Musical performance combines a wide range of pitches, nuances, and expressive techniques. Audio-based classification of musical instruments thus requires to build signal representations that are invariant to such transformations. This article investigates the construction of learned convolutional architectures for instrument recognition, given a limited amount of annotated training data. In this context, we benchmark three different weight sharing strategies for deep convolutional networks in the time-frequency domain: temporal kernels; time-frequency kernels; and a linear combination of time-…
