Speaker recognition is the process of identifying a speaker based on the voice. The technology has attracted more attention with the recent increase in popularity of smart voice assistants, such as Amazon Alexa. In the past few years, various convolutional neural network (CNN) based speaker recognition algorithms have been proposed and achieved satisfactory performance. However, convolutional operations are building blocks that typically perform on a local neighborhood at a time and thus miss to capture global, long-range interactions at the feature level which are critical for understanding the pattern in a speaker's voice. In this work, we propose to apply Non-local Convolutional Neural Networks (NLCNN) to improve the capability of capturing long-range dependencies at the feature level, therefore improving speaker recognition performance. Specifically, we introduce non-local blocks where the output response of a position is computed as a weighted sum of the input features at all positions. Combining non-local blocks with pre-defined CNN networks, we investigate the effectiveness of NLCNN models. Without extensive tuning, the proposed NLCNN models outperform state-of-the-art speaker recognition algorithms on the public Voxceleb dataset. What's more, we investigate different types of non-local operations applied to the frequency-time domain, time domain, frequency domain and frame-level respectively. Among them, time domain is the most effective one for speaker recognition applications.
In this paper, a novel Convolutional Neural Network architecture has been developed for speaker verification in order to simultaneously capture and discard speaker and non-speaker information, respectively. In training phase, the network is trained to distinguish between different speaker identities for creating the background model. One of the crucial parts is to create the speaker models. Most of the previous approaches create speaker models based on averaging the speaker representations provided by the background model. We overturn this problem by further fine-tuning the trained model using…

In this paper, we propose a few-shot speaker identification method which can alleviate the overfitting problem. In the proposed method, the model of a depthwise separable convolutional network with channel attention is trained with a prototypical loss function. Experimental datasets are extracted…
Unsupervised clustering on speakers is becoming increasingly important for its potential uses in semi-supervised learning. In reality, we are often presented with enormous amounts of unlabeled data from multi-party meetings and discussions. An effective unsupervised clustering approach would allow us to significantly increase the amount of training data without additional costs for annotations. Recently, methods based on graph convolutional networks (GCN) have received growing attention for unsupervised clustering, as these methods exploit the connectivity patterns between nodes to improve lea…
We propose a neural network for zero-shot voice conversion (VC) without any parallel or transcribed data. Our approach uses pre-trained models for automatic speech recognition (ASR) and speaker embedding, obtained from a speaker verification task. Our model is fully convolutional and non-autoregressive except for a small pre-trained recurrent neural network for speaker encoding. ConVoice can convert speech of any length without compromising quality due to its convolutional architecture. Our model has comparable quality to similar state-of-the-art models while being extremely fast.
Learning speaker-specific features is vital in many applications like speaker recognition, diarization and speech recognition. This paper provides a novel approach, we term Neural Predictive Coding (NPC), to learn speaker-specific characteristics in a completely unsupervised manner from large amounts of unlabeled training data that even contain many non-speech events and multi-speaker audio streams. The NPC framework exploits the proposed short-term active-speaker stationarity hypothesis which assumes two temporally-close short speech segments belong to the same speaker, and thus a common repr…
Speaker-independent speech separation has achieved remarkable performance in recent years with the development of deep neural network (DNN). Various network architectures, from traditional convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) to advanced transformer, have been designed sophistically to improve separation performance. However, the state-of-the-art models usually suffer from several flaws related to the computation, such as large model size, huge memory consumption and computational complexity. To find the balance between the performance and computational efficie…
Majority of the recent approaches for text-independent speaker recognition apply attention or similar techniques for aggregation of frame-level feature descriptors generated by a deep neural network (DNN) front-end. In this paper a novel cross-device text-independent speaker verification architecture is proposed. Majority of the state-of-the-art deep architectures that are used for speaker verification tasks consider Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients. In contrast, our proposed Siamese convolutional neural network architecture uses Mel-frequency spectrogram coefficients to benefit from the dependency of the adjacent spectro-temporal features. Moreover, although spectro-temporal features have proved to be highly reliable in speaker verification models, they only represent some aspects of short-term acoust…
Speaker counting is the task of estimating the number of people that are simultaneously speaking in an audio recording. For several audio processing tasks such as speaker diarization, separation, localization and tracking, knowing the number of speakers at each timestep is a prerequisite, or at least it can be a strong advantage, in addition to enabling a low latency processing. In a previous work, we addressed the speaker counting problem with a multichannel convolutional recurrent neural network which produces an estimation at a short-term frame resolution. In this work, we show that, for a …
Speaker recognition using i-vector has been replaced by speaker recognition using deep learning. Speaker recognition based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has been widely used in recent years, which learn low-level speech representations from raw waveforms. On this basis, a CNN architecture called SincNet proposes a kind of unique convolutional layer, which has achieved band-pass filters. Compared with standard CNNs, SincNet learns the low and high cut-off frequencies of each filter. This paper proposes an improved CNNs architecture called PF-Net, which encourages the first convolution…

Deep gated convolutional networks have been proved to be very effective in single channel speech separation. However current state-of-the-art framework often considers training the gated convolutional networks in time-frequency (TF) domain. Such an approach will result in limited perceptual score, such as signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR) upper bound of separated utterances and also fail to exploit an end-to-end framework. In this paper we present an integrated simple and effective end-to-end approach to monaural speech separation, which consists of deep gated convolutional neural networks (GCN…

Recently, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long short-term memory (LSTM) based models have been introduced to deep learning-based target speaker separation. In this paper, we propose an Attention-based neural network (Atss-Net) in the spectrogram domain for the task. It allows the network to compute the correlation between each feature parallelly, and using shallower layers to extract more features, compared with the CNN-LSTM architecture. Experimental results show that our Atss-Net yields better performance than the VoiceFilter, although it only contains half of the parameters. Furtherm…
In this paper, a new speech feature fusion method is proposed for speaker recognition on the basis of the cross gate parallel convolutional neural network (CG-PCNN). The Mel filter bank features (MFBFs) of different frequency resolutions can be extracted from each speech frame of a speaker's speech by several Mel filter banks, where the numbers of the triangular filters in the Mel filter banks are different. Due to the frequency resolutions of these MFBFs are different, there are some complementaries for these MFBFs. The CG-PCNN is utilized to extract the deep features from these MFBFs, which …
In this work, we propose an overlapped speech detection system trained as a three-class classifier. Unlike conventional systems that perform binary classification as to whether or not a frame contains overlapped speech, the proposed approach classifies into three classes: non-speech, single speaker speech, and overlapped speech. By training a network with the more detailed label definition, the model can learn a better notion on deciding the number of speakers included in a given frame. A convolutional recurrent neural network architecture is explored to benefit from both convolutional layer's…

Deep attractor networks (DANs) perform speech separation with discriminative embeddings and speaker attractors. Compared with methods based on the permutation invariant training (PIT), DANs define a deep embedding space and deliver a more elaborate representation on each time-frequency (T-F) bin. However, it has been observed that the DANs achieve limited improvement on the signal quality if directly deployed in a reverberant environment. Following the success of time-domain separation networks on the clean mixture speech, we propose a time-domain DAN (TD-DAN) with two-streams of convolutional…
Deep learning is progressively gaining popularity as a viable alternative to i-vectors for speaker recognition. In spite of the impressive success of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in speaker recognition, our understanding to CNNs' internal functions is still limited. A major obstacle is that some popular visualization tools are difficult to apply, for example those producing saliency maps. The reason is that speaker information does not show clear spatial patterns in the temporal-frequency space, which makes it hard to interpret the visualization results, and hence hard to confirm the reliability of a visualization tool. In this paper, we conduct an extensive analysis on three popular visualizati…
In daily listening environments, speech is always distorted by background noise, room reverberation and interference speakers. With the developing of deep learning approaches, much progress has been performed on monaural multi-speaker speech separation. Nevertheless, most studies in this area focus on a simple problem setup of laboratory environment, which background noises and room reverberations are not considered. In this paper, we propose a two-stage model based on conv-TasNet to deal with the notable effects of noises and interference speakers separately, where enhancement and separation …

Though current SPN toolkits and learning algorithms are in their infancy, we aim to show that SPNs have the potential to become a useful tool for robust speech processing in the future. SPN speaker models …
In this paper, we present a deep neural network-based online multi-speaker localisation algorithm. Speaker recognition systems are widely used in various applications to identify a person by their voice; however, the high degree of variability in speech signals makes this a challenging task. Dealing with emotional variations is very difficult because emotions alter the voice characteristics of a person; thus, the acoustic features differ from those used to train models in a neutral environment. Therefore, speaker recognition models trained on neutral speech fail to correctly identify speakers under emotional stress. Although considerable advancements in speaker identification have been made…

In recent studies, it has shown that speaker patterns can be learned from very short speech segments (e.g., 0.3 seconds) by a carefully designed convolutional & time-delay deep neural network (CT-DNN) model. By enforcing the model to discriminate the speakers in the training data, frame-level speaker features can be derived from the last hidden layer. In spite of its good performance, a potential problem of the present model is that it involves a parametric classifier, i.e., the last affine layer, which may consume some discriminative knowledge, thus leading to `information leak' for the featu…
Single-channel, speaker-independent speech separation methods have recently seen great progress. However, the accuracy, latency, and computational cost of such methods remain insufficient. The majority of the previous methods have formulated the separation problem through the time-frequency representation of the mixed signal, which has several drawbacks, including the decoupling of the phase and magnitude of the signal, the suboptimality of time-frequency representation for speech separation, and the long latency in calculating the spectrograms. To address these shortcomings, we propose a full…
