The Large Area Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instruments onboard the AstroSat Observatory has observed the X-ray binary system Her X-1 during AstroSat observing sessions AO2, AO3 and TO2. These include observations while Her X-1 is in different stages of its 35 day cycle: Low State, Turn-on to Main High State, peak of Main High State and early decline of Main High State. These observations also include a number of dips and one egress of neutron star eclipse. Here we present light curves and softness ratio analysis for these observations and discuss new features of the spectral changes with 35-day phase and orbital phase. We find a new phenomenon for dips during Main High state: About half of the dips show constant softness ratio as count rate decreases, which has not been seen before, and could be caused by highly ionized matter or very dense cold matter. The other half of the dips show the normal decrease of softness ratio as count rate decreases. These are caused by cold matter absorption and were previously known.
With its large effective area at hard X-rays, high time resolution and having co-aligned other instruments, AstroSat/LAXPC was designed to usher in a new era in rapid variability studies and wide spectral band measurements of the X-ray binaries. Over the last five years, the instrument has successfully achieved to a significant extent these Science goals. In the coming years, it is poised to make more important discoveries. This paper highlights the primary achievements of AstroSat/LAXPC in unraveling the behavior of black hole and neutron star systems and discusses the exciting possibility of…
We present results from an observation of the Low Mass X-ray Binary 4U 1636-536 obtained with the LAXPC instrument aboard AstroSat. The observations of 4U 1636-536 made during the performance verification phase of AstroSat showed seven thermonuclear X-ray bursts in a total exposure of ~ 65 ks over a period of about two consecutive days. Moreover, the light curve of 4U 1636-536 revealed the presence of a rare triplet of X-ray bursts, having a wait time of about 5.5 minutes between second and the third bursts. We also present results from time-resolved spectroscopy performed during these seven X…
The Be X-ray Binary 4U 0115+63 was observed by Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on AstroSat on 2015 October 24 during the peak of a giant Type II outburst. Prominent intensity oscillations at ~ 1 and ~ 2 mHz frequency were detected during the outburst. Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations made during the same outburst also show mHz quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs). Details of the oscillations and their characteristics deduced from LAXPC/AstroSat and NuSTAR observations are reported in this paper. Analysis of the archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explo…
The AstroSat mission carries several high-energy detectors meant for fast timing studies of cosmic sources. In order to carry out high precision multi-wavelength timing studies, it is essential to calibrate the absolute time stamps of these instruments to the best possible accuracy. We present here the absolute time calibration of the AstroSat LAXPC instrument, utilising the broadband electromagnetic emission from the Crab Pulsar to cross calibrate against Fermi-LAT and ground based radio observatories Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). Using the techniq…
Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) is one of the major AstroSat payloads. LAXPC instrument will provide high time resolution X-ray observations in 3 to 80 keV energy band with moderate energy resolution. A cluster of three co-aligned identical LAXPC detectors is used in AstroSat to provide large collection area of more than 6000 cm2 . The large detection volume (15 cm depth) filled with xenon gas at about 2 atmosphere pressure, results in detection efficiency greater than 50%, above 30 keV. With its broad energy range and fine time resolution (10 microsecond), LAXPC instrument is we…
Using data from the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) on the \textit{AstroSat} satellite, we observed the Type-1 thermonuclear X-ray bursts from the Low Mass X-ray Binary Neutron Star 4U 1323-62. The observations of 4U 1323-62 were carried out during the performance verification phase of the \textit{AstroSat} satellite showed six thermonuclear X-ray bursts in a total effective exposure of $\sim$ 49.5 ks for about two consecutive days. Recurrence time of the detected thermonuclear bursts is in accordance with the orbital period of the source $\sim$ 9400 seconds. Moreover, the light …
For the first time, simultaneous broadband spectral and timing study of the atoll source 4U 1705-44 was performed using AstroSat Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) data (0.8-70 keV). Based on the HID, the source was in the soft banana state during these observations. Spectral modeling was performed using the full reflection framework and an inner disk radii of 14 Rg was obtained. A hard powerlaw tail was noticed in the soft state and hot component fluxes and varying powerlaw indices point towards a varying corona/sub-keplerian flow. Based on the spectr…
The low mass X-ray binary 4U 1728-24 was observed with AstroSat/LAXPC on 8th March 2016. Data from a randomly chosen one orbit of over 3 ks was analyzed for detection of rapid intensity variations. We found that the source intensity was nearly steady but towards the end of the observation a typical Type-1 burst was detected. Dynamical power spectrum of the data in the 3 to 20 keV band, reveals presence of a kHz Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) whose frequency drifted from around 815 Hz at the beginning of the observation to about 850 Hz just before the burst. The QPO is also detected in the 10…
We report the first report on cyclotron line studies with the LAXPC instrument onboard AstroSat of the High mass X-ray Binary pulsar 4U 1538-52. During the observation of source which spanned about one day with a net exposure of 50 ks,the source X-ray flux remained constant. Pulse profile is double peaked in low energy range and has a single peak in high energy range, the transition taking place around the cyclotron line energy of the source. Cyclotron Scattering Feature (CRSF) is detected at $\sim$ 22 keV with a very high significance in phase averaged spectrum. It is one of the highest signa…
We report the first analysis of data from AstroSat/LAXPC observations of Cygnus X-1 in January 2016. LAXPC spectra reveals that the source was in the canonical hard state, represented by a prominent thermal Comptonization component having a photon index of 1.8 and high temperature kT of electron > 60 keV along with weak reflection and possible disk emission. The power spectrum can be characterized by two broad lorentzian functions centered at 0.4 and 3 Hz. The r.m.s of the low frequency component decreases from 15% at around 4 keV to 10% at around 50 keV, while that of the high frequency one v…
We present the first quick look analysis of data from nine {\it AstroSat}'s LAXPC observations of GRS 1915+105 during March 2016 when the source had the characteristics of being in Radio-quiet $χ$ class. We find that a simple empirical model of a disk blackbody emission, with Comptonization and a broad Gaussian Iron line can fit the time averaged 3--80 keV spectrum with a systematic uncertainty of 1.5\% and a background flux uncertainty of 4\%. A simple deadtime-corrected Poisson noise level spectrum matches well with the observed high frequency power spectra till 50 kHz and as expected the da…
We report the detection of 5 Type-1 thermonuclear X-ray bursts and one burst-like event in the neutron star LMXB source, Cyg X-2 using X-ray data obtained with the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on board AstroSat. We carry out an energy resolved burst profile analysis as well as time resolved spectral analysis for each of the bursts and characterize their properties. All bursts are weak with burst peak-to-persistent intensity ratios $<$ 3, decay times $\sim$2 s, and with fluences $\sim$1$\times$10$^{-8}$ ergs/cm$^2$, indicating that the observed bursts are Helium fuel…
In this paper, we present the first results of spectral and timing properties of the atoll source 4U 1705-44 using $\sim$ 100 ks data obtained with Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) onboard {\it AstroSat}. The source was in the high-soft state during our observations and traced out a {\it banana track} in the Hardness Intensity Diagram (HID). We study {\bf the} evolution of the Power Density Spectra (PDS) and the energy spectra along the HID. PDS show presence of a broad Lorentzian feature (Peaked Noise or PN) centered at $1-13$ Hz and a very low frequency noise (VLFN). The energy …
Large Area X-ray Propositional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on AstroSat is aimed at providing high time resolution X-ray observations in 3 to 80 keV energy band with moderate energy resolution. To achieve large collecting area, a cluster of three co-aligned identical LAXPC detectors, is used to realize an effective area in access of about 6000 cm2 at 15 keV. The large detection volume of the LAXPC detectors, filled with xenon gas at about 2 atmosphere pressure, results in detection efficiency greater than 50%, above 30 keV. In this article, we present salient features of the LAXPC detectors, the…
We report the results of broadband timing and spectral analysis of data from an AstroSat observation of the High Mass X-ray binary LMC X$-$4. The Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) and Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) instruments on-board the AstroSat observed the source in August 2016. A complete X-ray eclipse was detected with the LAXPC. The 3$-$40 keV power density spectrum showed the presence of coherent pulsations along with a $\sim 26$ mHz quasi-periodic oscillation feature. The spectral properties of LMC X$-$4 were derived from a joint analysis of the SXT and LAXPC spectral data. T…
We present timing and spectral analysis of data from an observation of the High Mass X-ray Binary pulsar 4U 1907+09 with the LAXPC instrument onboard AstroSat. The light curve consisted of a flare at the beginning of the observation, followed by persistent emission. The pulsar continues to spin down, and the pulse profile is found to be double-peaked up to 16 keV with the peaks separated by a phase of $\sim0.45$. Significant energy dependence of the pulse profile is seen with diminishing amplitude of the secondary peak above 16 keV, and increasing amplitude of the main peak upto 40 keV and a s…
SAX J1748.9-2021 is a transient accretion powered millisecond X-ray pulsar located in the Globular cluster NGC 6440. We report on the spectral and timing analysis of SAX J1748.9-2021 performed on AstroSat data taken during its faint and short outburst of 2017. We derived the best-fitting orbital solution for the 2017 outburst and obtained an average local spin frequency of 442.361098(3) Hz. The pulse profile obtained from 3-7 keV and 7-20 keV energy bands suggest constant fractional amplitude ~0.5% for fundamental component, contrary to previously observed energy pulse profile dependence. Our …
In this paper, we present the first results obtained using $\sim$ 50 ks observations of the bright low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 17+2 with Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) onboard {\it AstroSat}. The source traced out a complete Z-track in the hardness intensity diagram (HID). The spectra at different sections of the Z-diagram are well described by either a combination of a thermal Comptonization component, a power-law and a relativistic iron line or a model consisting of a thermal disk component, a single temperature blackbody, a power-law and a relativistic iron line. Fitting …
We present here results from the X-ray timing and spectral analysis of the X-ray binary Cyg X-3 using observations from Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) on-board AstroSat. Consecutive lightcurves observed over a period of one year show the binary orbital period of 17253.56 +/- 0.19 sec. Another low-amplitude, slow periodicity of the order of 35.8 +/- 1.4 days is observed which may be due to the orbital precession as suggested earlier by Molteni et al. (1980). During the rising binary phase, power density spectra from different observations during flaring hard X-ray state show quas…
We report the results of AstroSat observations of Cygnus X-2 during February 2016. The source's power density spectrum generated using LAXPC data revealed the presence of a prominent Quasi-periodic Oscillation (QPO) at $\sim42$ Hz with broadband continuum noise at lower frequencies at $\sim10$ Hz. The large effective area of LAXPC at $\gtrsim$30 keV allowed for an unprecedented study of the energy dependence of the QPO and the broad noise continuum. The fractional r.m.s increases with energy, and its shape is similar for both the QPO and the continuum noise, suggesting a common radiative origi…
We report the results of an observation of low mass X-ray binary GX 3+1 with {\it AstroSat}'s Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) and Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) instruments on-board for the first time. We have detected one Type-1 thermonuclear burst ($\sim$ 15 s) present in the LAXPC 20 light curve, with a double peak feature at higher energies and our study of the hardness-intensity diagram reveals that the source was in a soft banana state. The pre-burst emission could be described well by a thermally Comptonised model component. The burst spectra is modelled adopting a time-resolv…
Results on timing and spectral properties of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar 3A 0726-260 (4U 0728-25) are presented. The binary was observed on 2016 May 6-7 with the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) and Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) instruments onboard the AstroSat satellite. During this observation the source was in non-flaring persistent state at a flux level of $\sim$ 8.6 $\pm$ 0.3 $\times$10$^{-11}$ ergs cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ in 0.4-20 keV. Strong X-ray pulsations with a period of 103.144$\pm$0.001 seconds are detected in 0.3-7 keV with the SXT and in 3-40 keV with the LAXPC. The pulse…
We present here the results of the first broadband simultaneous spectral and temporal studies of the newly detected black hole binary MAXI J1820+070 as seen by SXT and LAXPC on-board AstroSat.The observed combined spectra in the energy range 0.7-80 keV were well modeled using disk black-body emission, thermal Comptonization and a reflection component. The spectral analysis revealed that the source was in its hard spectral state (Gamma=1.61) with a cool disk (kTin=0.22 keV). We report the energy dependent time-lag and root mean squared (rms) variability at different frequencies in the energy ra…
We present broadband X-ray spectral-timing analysis of the new Galactic X-ray transient MAXI~J1348--630 using five simultaneous {\it AstroSat} and {\it NICER} observations. Spectral analysis using {\it AstroSat} data identify the source to be in the soft state for the first three observations and in a faint and bright hard state for the next two. Quasi-periodic oscillations at $\sim 0.9$ and $\sim 6.9$\,Hz, belonging to the type-C and type-A class are detected. In the soft state, the power density spectra are substantially lower (by a factor $> 5$) for the {\it NICER} (0.5--12 keV) band compar…
We report the results from analysis of six observations of Cygnus X-1 by Large Area X-ray Proportional Counters (LAXPC) and Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) on-board AstroSat, when the source was in the hard spectral state as revealed by the broad band spectra. The spectra obtained from all the observations can be described by a single temperature Comptonizing region with disk and reflection components. The event mode data from LAXPC provides unprecedented energy dependent fractional root mean square (rms) and time-lag at different frequencies which we fit with empirical functions. We invoke a fluct…
We present the X-ray spectral and timing analysis of the transient black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47, observed with the AstroSat, Chandra and MAXI space missions during its soft X-ray outburst in 2016. The outburst, from the rising phase until the peak, is neither detected in hard X-rays (15-50 keV) by the Swift/BAT nor in radio. Such non-detection along with the source behavior in the hardness-intensity and color-color diagrams obtained using MAXI data confirm that both Chandra and AstroSat observations were performed during the high soft spectral state. The High Energy Grating (HEG) spectru…
We present the spectro-timing analysis of the black hole binary system GX 339-4 using AstroSat data extracted at the beginning of outbursts in 2017 and 2019. The joint spectral fitting of LAXPC and SXT data revealed that the source was in a faint low/hard state for both 2017 and 2019 observations with a nearly equal photon index of $\sim$1.57 and $\sim$1.58 and with Eddington ratio, $L/L_{Edd}$, of 0.0011 and 0.0046 respectively. The addition of a reflection component into the spectral modelling improved the fit ($Δχ^2$ $\approx~6$ for 2017 and $Δχ^2$ $\approx~7$ for 2019), pointing towards th…
We report on the first analysis of AstroSat observation of the Z-source GX 5- 1 on February 26-27, 2017. The hardness-intensity plot reveals that the source traced out the horizontal and normal branches. The 0.8-20 keV spectra from simultaneous SXT and LAXPC data at different locations of the hardness-intensity plot can be well described by a disk emission and a thermal Comptonized component. The ratio of the disk flux to the total i.e. the disk flux ratio increases monotonically along the horizontal to the normal one. Thus, the difference between the normal and horizontal branches is that in …
This work presents timing and spectral analysis of 4U 2206+54 using data obtained from LAXPC instrument onboard India's AstroSat mission. This source was observed with AstroSat in September 2016 and October 2016. We report detection of $5648 (4)$ s pulsations at MJD 57669 in the latter observation of 4U 2206+54. The pulse profile is sinusoidal and the inherent shape is independent of energy up to 30 keV. The pulse fraction increases with energy from $\sim 0.5$% to $\sim 0.8$%. We report an updated spin down rate of $2.95 (14) \times 10^{-7}$ s s$^{-1}$. This is about 0.40 times smaller than th…
We analyse the aperiodic flaring features, also known as shots, observed in Cyg X-1 in the 0.1-80 keV energy band using a 6.39 ks simultaneous observation with AstroSat and NICER. We detect 49 simultaneous shots in the soft and hard X-ray bands with NICER and AstroSat-LAXPC, respectively. We observe the shot profile for the first time in soft X-rays (0.1-3 keV), which shows a spectral peak at $\sim$2 keV. Using time-averaged spectroscopy, we measured the truncation of the inner accretion disk at $6.7\pm0.2$ gravitational radii. The shot-phase resolved spectroscopy allowed us to identify the or…
We present the results from the multi-wavelength monitoring observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 with AstroSat. We analysed both the X-ray (SXT & LAXPC) and UV (UVIT) data of the source at two epochs, separated by ~18 days. The source was in a low flux state during the observations, and the X-ray spectra were found to be harder than usual. The presence of soft X-ray excess was identified in the observations, and the broadband X-ray continuum was modelled with power-law and blackbody (modified by intrinsic absorption) and a distant neutral reflection component. We did not fi…
From the analysis of more than 92 ks of data obtained with the laxpc instrument on board Astrosat we have detected a clear high-frequency QPO whose frequency varies between 67.4 and 72.3 Hz. In the classification of variability classes of GRS 1915+105, at the start of the observation period the source was in class omega and at the end the variability was that of class mu: both classes are characterized by the absence of hard intervals and correspond to disk-dominated spectra. After normalization to take into account time variations of the spectral properties as measured by X-ray hardness, the …
We present results from AstroSat observation of the recent outburst of GRO J2058+42, an X-ray pulsar in a Be-binary system. The source was observed on April 10, 2019 by LAXPC and SXT instruments on AstroSat during its declining phase of the latest giant outburst. Light curves showed a strong pulsation of the pulsar with a period of 194.2201 \pm 0.0016 s, and a spin-up rate of (1.65\pm0.06)\times10^{-11} Hz s^{-1}. Intermittent flaring was detected in light curves between 3--80 keV energy band with increase in intensity by up to 1.8 times its average intensity. Pulse profiles obtained between 3…
We present the results of the X-ray flaring activity of 1ES 1959+650 during October 25-26, 2017 using AstroSat observations. The source was variable in the X-ray. We investigated the evolution of the X-ray spectral properties of the source by dividing the total observation period ($\sim 130$ ksecs) into time segments of 5 ksecs, and fitting the SXT and LAXPC spectra for each segment. Synchrotron emission of a broken power-law particle density model provided a better fit than the log-parabola one. The X-ray flux and the normalised particle density at an energy less than the break one, were foun…
Galactic transient black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI J1535-571 was discovered on 2017 September 02 simultaneously by {\it MAXI}/GSC and {\it Swift}/BAT instruments. It has also been observed by India's first multi-wavelength astronomy-mission satellite {\it AstroSat}, during the rising phase of its 2017-18 outburst. We make both the spectral and the temporal analysis of the source during 2017 September 12-17 using data of {\it AstroSat}'s Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) in the energy range of $3-40$~keV to infer the accretion flow properties of the source. Spectral analysis is done…
We present the results of timing and spectral analysis of the HMXB pulsar, Cen X-3, with the help of observations carried out using the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) on board $\textit{AstroSat}$. As part of our analysis, we sampled the source properties during 4 different observation epochs covering two widely different intensity states. We obtain a timing solution and report precise measurements of the spin and orbital parameters corresponding to these observational epochs. The pulse profiles during the two intensity states reveal dramatically varying shapes within a time span…
We present the results obtained from broadband X-ray timing and spectral analysis of black hole candidate MAXI J1803-298 using an AstroSat observation on May 11-12, 2021. Four periodic absorption dips with a periodicity of $7.02 \pm 0.18$ hour are detected in the light curve. AstroSat observe the source when it was undergoing a transition from hard-intermediate state to soft-intermediate state. Our timing analysis reveals the presence of a sharp type-C quasi periodic oscillation (QPO) in the power density spectra (PDS) with an evolving QPO frequency ranging from $5.31 \pm 0.02$ Hz to $7.61\pm …
OJ 287 is a well-studied binary black hole system, that occasionally exhibits bright X-ray and optical flares. Here we present a detailed spectral study of its second brightest X-ray flare observed during 2019-2020 using archival Swift and NuSTAR observations along with ToO observations from AstroSat. The entire flaring period is divided into three states, defined as low, intermediate, and high states. The variation of hardness ratio (HR) with 0.3-10.0 keV integrated flux suggests a \enquote{softer-when-brighter} behavior, as also previously reported based on flux-index variations. Simultaneou…
We present a detailed spectral and timing analysis of Cygnus X-1 with multi-epoch observations, during $2016$ to $2019$, by SXT and LAXPC on-board AstroSat. We model the spectra in broad energy range of $0.5\!-\!70.0\,\rm{keV}$ to study the evolution of spectral properties while Cygnus X-1 transited from hard state to an extreme soft state via intermediate states in 2017. Simultaneous timing features are also examined by modelling the power density spectra in $3.0\!-\!50.0\,\rm{keV}$ . We find that during high-soft state observations, made by AstroSat on Oct $24,\,2017$ (MJD $58050$), the ener…
We report the analysis of simultaneous multi-wavelength data of the high energy peaked blazar RGB J0710+591 from the LAXPC, SXT and UVIT instruments on-board AstroSat. The wide band X-ray spectrum (0.35 -- 30 keV) is modelled as synchrotron emission from a non-thermal distribution of high energy electrons. The spectrum is unusually curved, with a curvature parameter $β_p \sim 6.4$ for a log parabola particle distribution, or a high energy spectral index $p_2 > 4.5$ for a broken power-law distribution. The spectrum shows more curvature than an earlier quasi-simultaneous analysis of Swift-XRT/Nu…
We present the X-ray timing and spectral analysis of the new Galactic X-ray transient Swift J1658.2-4242 observed with LAXPC and SXT instruments onboard {\it Astrosat}. We detect prominent C-type quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of frequencies varying from $\sim 1.5$ Hz to $\sim 6.6$ Hz along with distinct 2nd harmonics and sub-harmonics. The QPO detected at $\sim 1.56$ Hz drifts to a higher centroid frequency of $\sim 1.74$ in the course of the observation, while the QPO detected at $\sim 6.6$\,Hz disappeared during hard flarings. The fractional rms at the QPO and the sub-harmonic frequenci…
We present the timing and spectral studies of the Be/X-ray binary XTE J1946+274 during its 2018 and 2021 giant outbursts using observations with the SXT and the LAXPC instruments on the AstroSat satellite. Unlike the 1998 and 2010 outbursts, where a giant outburst was followed by several low intensity periodic outbursts, the 2018 and 2021 outbursts were single outbursts. The X-ray pulsations are detected over a broad energy band covering 0.5-80 keV from the compact object. We construct the spin evolution history of the pulsar over two decades and find that the pulsar spins-up during the outbur…

We report the results of AstroSat observations of GRS 1915$+$105 obtained using 100 ks guaranteed-time (GT) during the soft state. The Color-Color Diagram (CCD) indicates a variability class of $δ$ with the detection of High Frequency QPO (HFQPO) in the power density spectra (PDS). The HFQPO is seen to vary in the frequency range of $67.96 - 70.62$ Hz with percentage rms $\sim 0.83 - 1.90$ % and significance varying from $1.63 - 7.75$. The energy dependent power spectra show that the HFQPO features are dominant only in $6 - 25$ keV energy band. The broadband energy spectra ($0.7 - 50$ keV) of …
