In this work, we present a new large-scale quantum circuit simulator. It is based on the tensor network contraction technique to represent quantum circuits. We propose a novel parallelization algorithm based on \stepslice . In this paper, we push the requirement on the size of a quantum computer that will be needed to demonstrate the advantage of quantum computation with Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA). We computed 210 qubit QAOA circuits with 1,785 gates on 1,024 nodes of the the Cray XC 40 supercomputer Theta. To the best of our knowledge, this constitutes the largest QAOA quantum circuit simulations reported to this date.

A revised version of the massively parallel simulator of a universal quantum computer, described in this journal eleven years ago, is used to benchmark various gate-based quantum algorithms on some of the most powerful supercomputers that exist today. Adaptive encoding of the wave function reduces the memory requirement by a factor of eight, making it possible to simulate universal quantum computers with up to 48 qubits on the Sunway TaihuLight and on the K computer. The simulator exhibits close-to-ideal weak-scaling behavior on the Sunway TaihuLight,on the K computer, on an IBM Blue Gene/Q, a…
Here we present qFlex, a flexible tensor network based quantum circuit simulator. qFlex can compute both exact amplitudes, essential for the verification of the quantum hardware, as well as low fidelity amplitudes, in order to mimic sampling from Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. In this work, we focus on random quantum circuits (RQCs) in the range of sizes expected for supremacy experiments. Fidelity $f$ simulations are performed at a cost that is $1/f$ lower than perfect fidelity ones. We also present a technique to eliminate the overhead introduced by rejection sampling in mo…
Quantum computational chemistry (QCC) is the use of quantum computers to solve problems in computational quantum chemistry. We develop a high performance variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) simulator for simulating quantum computational chemistry problems on a new Sunway supercomputer. The major innovations include: (1) a Matrix Product State (MPS) based VQE simulator to reduce the amount of memory needed and increase the simulation efficiency; (2) a combination of the Density Matrix Embedding Theory with the MPS-based VQE simulator to further extend the simulation range; (3) A three-level p…
This work studies the porting and optimization of the tensor network simulator QTensor on GPUs, with the ultimate goal of simulating quantum circuits efficiently at scale on large GPU supercomputers. We implement NumPy, PyTorch, and CuPy backends and benchmark the codes to find the optimal allocation of tensor simulations to either a CPU or a GPU. We also present a dynamic mixed backend to achieve optimal performance. To demonstrate the performance, we simulate QAOA circuits for computing the MaxCut energy expectation. Our method achieves $176\times$ speedup on a GPU over the NumPy baseline on…

Simulation is essential for developing quantum hardware and algorithms. However, simulating quantum circuits on classical hardware is challenging due to the exponential scaling of quantum state space. While factorized tensors can greatly reduce this overhead, tensor network-based simulators are relatively few and often lack crucial functionalities. To address this deficiency, we created TensorLy-Quantum, a Python library for quantum circuit simulation that adopts the PyTorch API. Our library leverages the optimized tensor methods of the existing TensorLy ecosystem to represent, simulate, and m…
TensorCircuit is an open source quantum circuit simulator based on tensor network contraction, designed for speed, flexibility and code efficiency. Written purely in Python, and built on top of industry-standard machine learning frameworks, TensorCircuit supports automatic differentiation, just-in-time compilation, vectorized parallelism and hardware acceleration. These features allow TensorCircuit to simulate larger and more complex quantum circuits than existing simulators, and are especially suited to variational algorithms based on parameterized quantum circuits. TensorCircuit enables orde…
We introduce a new open-source software library Jet, which uses task-based parallelism to obtain speed-ups in classical tensor-network simulations of quantum circuits. These speed-ups result from i) the increased parallelism introduced by mapping the tensor-network simulation to a task-based framework, ii) a novel method of reusing shared work between tensor-network contraction tasks, and iii) the concurrent contraction of tensor networks on all available hardware. We demonstrate the advantages of our method by benchmarking our code on several Sycamore-53 and Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) supr…

In recent times, Variational Quantum Circuits (VQC) have been widely adopted to different tasks in machine learning such as Combinatorial Optimization and Supervised Learning. With the growing interest, it is pertinent to study the boundaries of the classical simulation of VQCs to effectively benchmark the algorithms. Classically simulating VQCs can also provide the quantum algorithms with a better initialization reducing the amount of quantum resources needed to train the algorithm. This manuscript proposes an algorithm that compresses the quantum state within a circuit using a tensor ring re…
Quantum simulation promises to have wide applications in many fields where problems are hard to model with classical computers. Various quantum devices of different platforms have been built to tackle the problems in, say, quantum chemistry, condensed matter physics, and high-energy physics. Here, we report an experiment towards the simulation of quantum gravity by simulating the holographic entanglement entropy. On a six-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance quantum simulator, we demonstrate a key result of Anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory(\adscft) correspondence---the Ryu-Takayanagi formula …
We develop a high-performance tensor-based simulator for random quantum circuits(RQCs) on the new Sunway supercomputer. Our major innovations include: (1) a near-optimal slicing scheme, and a path-optimization strategy that considers both complexity and compute density; (2) a three-level parallelization scheme that scales to about 42 million cores; (3) a fused permutation and multiplication design that improves the compute efficiency for a wide range of tensor contraction scenarios; and (4) a mixed-precision scheme to further improve the performance. Our simulator effectively expands the scope…
We experimentally simulate the spin networks -- a fundamental description of quantum spacetime at the Planck level. We achieve this by simulating quantum tetrahedra and their interactions. The tensor product of these quantum tetrahedra comprises spin networks. In this initial attempt to study quantum spacetime by quantum information processing, on a four-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance quantum simulator, we simulate the basic module -- comprising five quantum tetrahedra -- of the interactions of quantum spacetime. By measuring the geometric properties on the corresponding quantum tetrahedra a…
Tensor-Network (TN) states are efficient parametric representations of ground states of local quantum Hamiltonians extensively used in numerical simulations. Here we encode a TN ansatz state directly into a quantum simulator, which can potentially offer an exponential advantage over purely numerical simulation. In particular, we demonstrate the optimization of a quantum-encoded TN ansatz state using a variational quantum eigensolver on an ion-trap quantum computer by preparing the ground states of the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The generated states are characterized by estimating the…
Consumption of magic states promotes the stabilizer model of computation to universal quantum computation. Here, we propose three different classical algorithms for simulating such universal quantum circuits, and characterize them by establishing precise connections with a family of magic monotones. Our first simulator introduces a new class of quasiprobability distributions and connects its runtime to a generalized notion of negativity. We prove that this algorithm has significantly improved exponential scaling compared to all prior quasiprobability simulators for qubits. Our second simulator…
The numerical simulation of quantum circuits is an indispensable tool for development, verification and validation of hybrid quantum-classical algorithms on near-term quantum co-processors. The emergence of exascale high-performance computing (HPC) platforms presents new opportunities for pushing the boundaries of quantum circuit simulation. We present a modernized version of the Tensor Network Quantum Virtual Machine (TNQVM) which serves as a quantum circuit simulation backend in the eXtreme-scale ACCelerator (XACC) framework. The new version is based on the general purpose, scalable tensor n…
Recent developments in analog quantum simulators based on cold atoms and trapped ions call for cross-validating the accuracy of quantum-simulation experiments with use of quantitative numerical methods; however, it is particularly challenging for dynamics of systems with more than one spatial dimension. Here we demonstrate that a tensor-network method running on classical computers is useful for this purpose. We specifically analyze real-time dynamics of the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model after a sudden quench starting from the Mott insulator by means of the tensor-network method based on …
The approximate contraction of a Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) tensor network is a fundamental ingredient of any PEPS algorithm, required for the optimization of the tensors in ground state search or time evolution, as well as for the evaluation of expectation values. An exact contraction is in general impossible, and the choice of the approximating procedure determines the efficiency and accuracy of the algorithm. We analyze different previous proposals for this approximation, and show that they can be understood via the form of their environment, i.e. the operator that results from …
