In this work, molecular dynamics simulations are performed to estimate the equilibrium pressure of liquid confined in nanopores. The simulations show that the pressure is highly sensitive to the pore size and can significantly change from absolute positive to negative values for a very small (0.1 nm) change in pore size. The contribution from the solid-liquid interaction always dominates the pressure in the first liquid layer adjacent to the surface and the sensitiveness of pressure on the pore size is due to the atom distribution in the liquid layers. A surface influence number S is introduced to quantitatively characterize the degree of the confinement. The S number decreases with increasing pore size based on a power law function at constant system temperature. In nanopores with large S number, the pore liquid pressure is found to be independent of bulk liquid pressure while the pore pressure increases with bulk pressure in nanopores with small S number.
In this article we investigate through molecular dynamics simulations the diffusion behavior of the TIP4P/2005 water when confined in pristine and deformed carbon nanotubes (armchair and zigzag). To analyze different diffusive mechanisms, the water temperature was varied from $210\leq T\leq 380$~K. The results of our simulations reveal that water present a non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius diffusion crossover. The confinement shifts the diffusion transition to higher temperatures when compared with the bulk system. In addition, for narrower nanotubes, water diffuses in a single line which leads to a …
The present article highlights an approach to generate contrasting patterns from drying droplets in a liquid bridge configuration, different from well-known coffee rings. Reduction of the confinement distance (the gap between the solid surfaces) leads to systematized nano-particle agglomeration yielding to spokes-like patterns similar to those found on scallop shells instead of circumferential edge deposition. Alteration of the confinement length modulates the curvature that entails variations in the evaporation flux across the liquid-vapor interface. Consequently, flow inside different liquid…
The formation of (bio)molecular condensates via liquid-liquid phase separation in cells has received increasing attention, as these coacervates play important functional and regulatory roles within biological systems. However, the majority of studies focused on the behavior of pure systems in bulk solutions, thus neglecting confinement effects and the interplay between the numerous molecules present in cells. To advance our knowledge, we perform simulations of binary polymer mixtures in droplets, considering both monodisperse and polydisperse molecular weight distributions for the longer polym…
Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) are molten salts which exhibit uniques physical and chemical properties, commonly harnessed for lubrication and energy applications. The pure ionic nature of RTIL leads to strong electrostatic interactions among the liquid, furthermore exalted in the presence of interfaces and confinement. In this work, we use a tuning-fork based dynamic Surface Force Tribometer (TF-SFT), which allows probing both the rheological and the tribological properties of RTILs films confined between a millimetric sphere and a surface, over a wide range of confinements. When the …
Understanding relaxation of supercooled fluids is a major challenge and confining such systems can lead to bewildering behaviour. Here we exploit an optically confined colloidal model system in which we use reduced pressure as a control parameter. The dynamics of the system are ``Arrhenius'' at low and moderate pressure, but at higher pressures relaxation is faster than expected. We associate this faster relaxation with a decrease in density adjacent to the confining boundary due to local ordering in the system enabled by the flexible wall.
Kerogen-rich shale reservoirs will play a key role during the energy transition, yet the effects of nano-confinement on the NMR relaxation of hydrocarbons in kerogen are poorly understood. We use atomistic MD simulations to investigate the effects of nano-confinement on the $^1$H NMR relaxation times $T_1$ and $T_2$ of heptane in kerogen. In the case of $T_1$, we discover the important role of confinement in reducing $T_1$ by $\sim$3 orders of magnitude from bulk heptane, in agreement with measurements of heptane dissolved in kerogen from the Kimmeridge Shale, without any models or free parame…
We simulate a hard-sphere liquid in confined geometry where the separation of the two parallel, hard walls is smaller than two particle diameters. By systematically reducing the wall separation we analyze the behavior of structural and thermodynamic properties, such as inhomogeneous density profiles, structure factors, and compressibilities when approaching the two-dimensional limit. In agreement with asymptotic predictions, we find for quasi-two-dimensional fluids that the density profile becomes parabolic and the structure factor converges towards its two-dimensional counterpart. To extract …
A two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal refers to a surface confined system. When such a system is further confined by external line boundaries or excluded from internal line boundaries, the nematic directors form a deformed texture that may display defect points or defect lines, for which winding numbers can be clearly defined. Here, a particular attention is paid to the case when the liquid crystal molecules prefer to form a boundary nematic texture in parallel to the wall surface (i.e., following the homogeneous boundary condition). A general theory, based on geome…
Confined samples of liquid crystals are characterized by a variety of topological defects and can be exposed to external constraints such as extreme confinements with nontrivial topology. Here we explore the intrinsic structure of smectic colloidal layers dictated by the interplay between entropy and an imposed external topology. Considering an annular confinement as a basic example, a plethora of competing states is found with nontrivial defect structures ranging from laminar states to multiple smectic domains and arrays of edge dislocations which we refer to as Shubnikov states in formal ana…
