We study a new type of random minimum spanning trees. It is built on the complete graph where each vertex is given a weight, which is a positive real number. Then, each edge is given a capacity which is a random variable that only depends on the product of the weights of its endpoints. We then study the minimum spanning tree corresponding to the edge capacities. Under a condition of finite moments on the node weights, we show that the expected diameter and typical distances of this minimum spanning tree are of order $n^{1/3}$. This is a generalization of the results of Addario-Berry, Broutin, and Reed [2009]. We then use our result to answer a conjecture in statistical physics about typical distances on a closely related object. This work also sets the ground for proving the existence of a non-trivial scaling limit of this spanning tree (a generalization of the result of Addario-Berry, Broutin, Goldschmidt, and Miermont [2017])). Our proof is based on a detailed study of rank-1 critical inhomogeneous random graphs, done in Safsafi [2020], and novel couplings between exploration trees related to those graphs and Galton-Watson trees.
In this paper we study the diameter of Inhomogeneous random graphs $G(n,κ,p)$ that are induced by irreducible kernels $κ$. The kernels we consider act on separable metric spaces and are almost everywhere continuous. We generalize results known for the Erdős-Rényi model $G(n,p)$ for several ranges of $p$. We find upper and lower bounds for the diameter of $G(n,κ,p)$ in terms of the expansion factor and two explicit constants that depend on the behavior of the kernel over partitions of the metric space.
We show that the diameter of a uniformly drawn spanning tree of a simple connected graph on $n$ vertices with minimal degree linear in $n$ is typically of order $\sqrt{n}$. A byproduct of our proof, which is of independent interest, is that on such graphs the Cheeger constant and the spectral gap are comparable.
We show that the diameter of a uniformly drawn spanning tree of a connected graph on $n$ vertices which satisfies certain high-dimensionality conditions typically grows like $Θ(\sqrt{n})$. In particular this result applies to expanders, finite tori $\mathbb{Z}_m^d$ of dimension $d \geq 5$, the hypercube $\{0,1\}^m$, and small perturbations thereof.
It has been claimed in Aldous, Miermont and Pitman [PTRF, 2004] that all Lévy trees are mixings of inhomogeneous continuum random trees. We give a rigorous proof of this claim in the case of a stable branching mechanism, relying on a new procedure for recovering the tree distance from the graphical spanning trees that works simultaneously for stable trees and inhomogeneous continuum random trees.
We introduce a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm which samples from the space of spanning trees of complete graphs using local rewiring operations only. The probability distribution of graphs of this kind is shown to depend on the symmetries of these graphs, which are reflected in the equilibrium distribution of the Markov chain. We prove that the algorithm is ergodic and proceed to estimate the probability distribution for small graph ensembles with exactly known probabilities. The autocorrelation time of the graph diameter demonstrates that the algorithm generates independent configurations…
In the complete graph on n vertices, when each edge has a weight which is an exponential random variable, Frieze proved that the minimum spanning tree has weight tending to zeta(3)=1/1^3+1/2^3+1/3^3+... as n goes to infinity. We consider spanning trees constrained to have depth bounded by k from a specified root. We prove that if k > log_2 log n+omega(1), where omega(1) is any function going to infinity with n, then the minimum bounded-depth spanning tree still has weight tending to zeta(3) as n -> infinity, and that if k < log_2 log n, then the weight is doubly-exponentially large in log_2 lo…
We consider dense graph sequences that converge to a connected graphon and prove that the GHP scaling limit of their uniform spanning trees is Aldous' Brownian CRT. Furthermore, we are able to extract the precise scaling constant from the limiting graphon. As an example, we can apply this to the scaling limit of the uniform spanning trees of the Erdös-Rényi sequence $(G(n,p))_{n \geq 1}$ for any fixed $p \in (0,1]$, and sequences of dense expanders. A consequence of GHP convergence is that several associated quantities of the spanning trees also converge, such as the height, diameter and law o…
Rank 1 inhomogeneous random graphs are a natural generalization of Erdős Rényi random graphs. In this generalization each node is given a weight. Then the probability that an edge is present depends on the product of the weights of the nodes it is connecting. In this article, we give precise and uniform exponential bounds on the size, weight and surplus of rank 1 inhomogeneous random graphs where the weights of the nodes behave like a random variable with finite fourth moment. We focus on the case where the mean degree of a random node is slightly larger than 1, we call that case the barely su…
We conjecture that finite graphs with positive Cheeger constant admit a spanning subgraph with positive Cheeger constant and girth proportional to the diameter. We prove this conjecture for regular expander graphs with large expansion. Our proof relies on the Local Lemma.
Let $M$ be the infinite spanning-tree-weighted random planar map, which is the local limit of finite random planar maps sampled with probability proportional to the number of spanning trees they admit. We show that a.s. the $M$-graph-distance diameter of the external diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) cluster on $M$ run for $m$ steps is of order $m^{2/d + o_m(1)}$, where $d$ is the metric ball volume growth exponent for $M$ (which was shown to exist by Ding-Gwynne, 2018). By known bounds for $d$, one has $0.55051\ldots \leq 2/d \leq 0.563315\ldots$. Along the way, we also prove that loop-eras…
We show that the Brownian continuum random tree is the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prohorov scaling limit of the uniform spanning tree on high-dimensional graphs including the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$ with $d>4$, the hypercube $\{0,1\}^n$, and transitive expander graphs. Several corollaries for associated quantities are then deduced: convergence in distribution of the rescaled diameter, height and simple random walk on these uniform spanning trees to their continuum analogues on the continuum random tree.
We prove that the wired uniform spanning forest exhibits mean-field behaviour on a very large class of graphs, including every transitive graph of at least quintic volume growth and every bounded degree nonamenable graph. Several of our results are new even in the case of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 5$. In particular, we prove that every tree in the forest has spectral dimension $4/3$ and walk dimension $3$ almost surely, and that the critical exponents governing the intrinsic diameter and volume of the past of a vertex in the forest are $1$ and $1/2$ respectively. (The past of a vertex in the unif…
A weighted $d-$complex is a simplicial complex of dimension $d$ in which each face is assigned a real-valued weight. We derive three key results here concerning persistence diagrams and minimal spanning acycles (MSAs) of such complexes. First, we establish an equivalence between the MSA face-weights and \emph{death times} in the persistence diagram. Next, we show a novel stability result for the MSA face-weights which, due to our first result, also holds true for the death and birth times, separately. Our final result concerns a perturbation of a mean-field model of randomly weighted $d-$compl…
In this paper, we investigate the diameter in preferential attachment (PA-) models, thus quantifying the statement that these models are small worlds. The models studied here are such that edges are attached to older vertices proportional to the degree plus a constant, i.e., we consider affine PA-models. There is a substantial amount of literature proving that, quite generally, PA-graphs possess power-law degree sequences with a power-law exponent τ>2. We prove that the diameter of the PA-model is bounded above by a constant times \log{t}, where t is the size of the graph. When the power-law e…
The minimal spanning forest on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ is known to consist of a single tree for $d \leq 2$ and is conjectured to consist of infinitely many trees for large $d$. In this paper, we prove that there is a single tree for quasi-planar graphs such as $\mathbb{Z}^{2}\times {\{0,\ldots,k\}}^{d-2}$. Our method relies on generalizations of the "Gluing Lemma" of arXiv:1401.7130. A related result is that critical Bernoulli percolation on a slab satisfies the box-crossing property. Its proof is based on a new Russo-Seymour-Welsh type theorem for quasi-planar graphs. Thus, at criticality, the proba…
We prove that the uniform spanning forests of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $\mathbb{Z}^{\ell}$ have qualitatively different connectivity properties whenever $\ell >d \geq 4$. In particular, we consider the graph formed by contracting each tree of the uniform spanning forest down to a single vertex, which we call the component graph. We introduce the notion of ubiquitous subgraphs and show that the set of ubiquitous subgraphs of the component graph changes whenever the dimension changes and is above $8$. To separate dimensions $5,6,7,$ and $8$, we prove a similar result concerning ubiquitous subhypergrap…
Motivated by applications, the last few years have witnessed tremendous interest in understanding the structure as well as the behavior of dynamics for inhomogeneous random graph models. In this study we analyze the maximal components at criticality of one famous class of such models, the rank-one inhomogeneous random graph model. Viewing these components as measured random metric spaces, under finite moment assumptions for the weight distribution, we show that the components in the critical scaling window with distances scaled by $n^{-1/3}$ converge in the Gromov-Haussdorf-Prokhorov metric to…

In a complete graph $K_n$ with edge weights drawn independently from a uniform distribution $U(0,1)$ (or alternatively an exponential distribution $\operatorname{Exp}(1)$), let $T_1$ be the MST (the spanning tree of minimum weight) and let $T_k$ be the MST after deletion of the edges of all previous trees $T_i$, $i<k$. We show that each tree's weight $w(T_k)$ converges in probability to a constant $γ_k$ with $2k-2\sqrt k <γ_k<2k+2\sqrt k$, and we conjecture that $γ_k = 2k-1+o(1)$. The problem is distinct from that of Frieze and Johansson (2018), finding $k$ MSTs of combined minimum weight, and…
