Magnetars are a kind of pulsars powered mainly by superhigh magnetic fields. They are popular sources with many unsolved issues in themselves, but also linked to various high energy phenomena, such as QPOs, giant flares, fast radio bursts and super-luminous supernovae. In this work, we first review our recent works on the dissipation of toroidal magnetic fields in magnetars and rotationally powered pulsars, then review the spin-down evolution of young and strongly magnetized pulsars, especially of magnetars. We present an interesting and important relation between the magnetization parameter, and magnetic field in the magnetar crust. Finally, we introduce our two works in progress: to explain the magnetar "anti-gltich" events in the thermal plastic flow model and to revisit the expression of braking index $n$, which is independent of the second derivative of spin frequency of a pulsar and give some proposals for our future work.
We have succeeded in obtaining magnetized equilibrium states with differential rotation and differential toroidal magnetic fields. If an internal toroidal field of a proto-neutron star is wound up from the initial poloidal magnetic field by differential rotation, the distribution of the toroidal magnetic field is determined by the profile of this differential rotation. However, the distributions of the toroidal fields in all previous magnetized equilibrium studies do not represent the magnetic winding by the differential rotation of the star. In this paper, we investigate a formulation of a di…
Strong magnetization in accretion discs could resolve a number of outstanding issues related to stability and state transitions in low-mass X-ray binaries. However, it is unclear how real discs become strongly magnetized and, even if they do, whether they can remain in such a state. In this paper, we address the latter issue through a pair of global disc simulations. Here, we only consider cases of initially purely toroidal magnetic fields contained entirely within a compact torus. We find that, over only a few tens of orbital periods, the magnetization of an initially strongly magnetized disc…
We have analyzed magnetized equilibrium states and showed a condition for appearance of the prolate and the toroidal magnetic field dominated stars by analytic approaches. Both observations and numerical stability analysis support that the magnetized star would have the prolate and the large internal toroidal magnetic fields. In this context, many investigations concerning magnetized equilibrium states have tried to obtain the prolate and the toroidal dominant solutions, but many of them have failed to obtain such configurations. Since the Lorentz force is a cross product of current density an…
A new code for computing fully general relativistic solutions of strongly magnetized rapidly rotating compact stars is developed as a part of the COCAL (Compact Object CALculator) code. The full set of Einstein's equations, Maxwell's equations and magnetohydrodynamic equations are consistently solved assuming perfect conductivity, stationarity, and axisymmetry, and strongly magnetized solutions associated with mixed poloidal and toroidal components of magnetic fields are successfully obtained in generic (non-circular) spacetimes. We introduce the formulation of the problem and the numerical me…
We will show the importance of coexistence of oppositely flowing $φ$-currents for magnetized stars to sustain strong toroidal magnetic fields within the stars by an- alyzing stationary states of magnetized stars with surface currents which flow in the opposite direction with respect to the bulk currents within the stars. We have imposed boundary conditions for currents and toroidal magnetic fields to vanish outside the stars. It is important to note that these boundary conditions set an upper limit for the total current within the stars. This upper limit for the total current results in the pr…
We construct the stably stratified magnetized stars within the framework of general relativity. The effects of magnetic fields on the structure of the star and spacetime are treated as perturbations of non-magnetized stars. By assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics and employing one-parameter equations of state, we derive basic equations for describing stationary and axisymmetric stably stratified stars containing magnetic fields whose toroidal components are much larger than the poloidal ones. A number of the polytropic models are numerically calculated to investigate basic properties of the eff…
Motivated by indirect observational evidence for strongly magnetized accretion discs around black holes, and the novel theoretical properties of such solutions, we investigate how a strong magnetization state can develop and persist. To this end, we perform local simulations of accretion discs with an initially purely toroidal magnetic field of equipartition strength. We demonstrate that discs with zero net vertical magnetic flux and realistic boundary conditions cannot sustain a strong toroidal field. However, a magnetic pressure-dominated disc can form from an initial configuration with a su…
The quasiperiodic oscillations found in the three giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters observed to date have been interpreted as crustal oscillations caused by a starquake following a dramatic rearrangement of the stellar magnetic field. Motivated by these observations, we study the influence of the magnetic field geometry in the frequencies of the torsional oscillations of magnetized neutron stars. We use realistic tabulated equations of state for the core and crust of the stars and model their magnetic field as a dipole plus a toroidal component, using the relativistic Grad-Shafranov equ…
We report the effects of quark-hadron phase transition on the structures of general relativistic stars with purely toroidal magnetic field. For the mixed phase, we take into account of the finite-size effects, which lead to non-uniform "Pasta" structures. Our study is based on axisymetric and stationary formalism including purely toroidal magnetic field. For hybrid stars, we find the characteristic distribution of magnetic field, which has a discontinuity originated in the quark-hadron mixed phase. These distributions of magnetic field will change astrophysical phenomena, such as cooling proce…
We examine the properties of strongly magnetized accretion discs in a global framework, with particular focus on the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities such as the magnetorotational instability (MRI). Work by Pessah and Psaltis showed that MRI is stabilized beyond a critical toroidal field in compressible, differentially rotating flows and, also, reported the appearance of two new instabilities beyond this field. Their results stemmed from considering geometric curvature effects due to the suprathermal background toroidal field, which had been previously ignored in weak-field studi…
We construct magnetized stars composed of a fluid stably stratified by entropy gradients in the framework of general relativity, assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics and employing a barotropic equation of state. We first revisit basic equations for describing stably-stratified stationary axisymmetric stars containing both poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields. As sample models, the magnetized stars considered by Ioka and Sasaki (2004), inside which the magnetic fields are confined, are modified to the ones stably stratified. The magnetized stars newly constructed in this study are believed to b…

Hot accretion tori around a compact object are known to be susceptible to a global hydrodynamical instability, the so-called Papaloizou-Pringle (PP) instability, arising from the interaction of non-axisymmetric waves across the corotation radius, where the wave pattern speed matches the fluid rotation rate. However, accretion tori produced in various astrophysical situations (e.g., collapsars and neutron star binary mergers) are likely to be highly magnetized. We study the effect of magnetic fields on the PP instability in incompressible tori with various magnetic strengths and structures. In …
We calculate the spin deceleration of proto-neutron stars by asymmetric neutrino absorption in the context of a fully relativistic mean field theory. We calculate for the first time the spin deceleration of neutron stars due to asymmetric neutrino absorption in a toroidal magnetic field configurations. We find a surprising effect that the deceleration can much larger for asymmetric neutrino absorption in a toroidal magnetic field than the usually presumed braking due to magnetic dipole radiation. This may explain the observation that magnetars appear to have had a more rapid deceleration in th…
In this work we show the results for numerical solutions of the relativistic Grad-Shafranov equation for a typical neutron star with 1.4 solar masses. We have studied the internal magnetic field considering both the poloidal and toroidal components, as well as the behavior of the field lines parametrized by the ratio between these components of the field.
We calculate axisymmetric spheroidal modes of neutron stars magnetized with an axisymmetric poloidal magnetic field. We use polytropes of the indices $n\sim1$ as background equilibrium models of neutron stars where we ignore the deformation due to the magnetic fields. For a poloidal magnetic field, axisymmetric normal modes of non-rotating stars are decoupled into spheroidal modes and toroidal modes, and we can treat spheroidal modes separately from toroidal modes. For the surface field strength $B_S$ ranging from $10^{14}$G to $10^{16}$G, we calculate axisymmetric spheroidal magnetic modes wh…
Force due to the self-gravity of the disc in the vertical direction is considered to study its possible effects on the structure of a magnetized advection-dominated accretion disc. We present steady-sate self similar solutions for the dynamical structure of such a type of the accretion flows. Our solutions imply reduced thickness of the disc because of the self-gravity. It also imply that the thickness of the disc will increase by adding the magnetic field strength.
We propose a new way of generating magnetized supersonic jets using a ring laser to irradiate a flat surface target. Using 2D FLASH code simulations which include the Biermann Battery term, we demonstrate that strong toroidal fields can be generated and sustained downstream in the collimated jet outflow far from the target surface. The field strength can be controlled by varying the ring laser separation, thereby providing a versatile laboratory platform for studying the effects of magnetic field in a variety of astrophysical settings.
We present spectral calculations of non-LTE accretion disk models appropriate for high luminosity stellar mass black hole X-ray binary systems. We first use a dissipation profile based on scaling the results of shearing box simulations of Hirose et al. (2009) to a range of annuli parameters. We simultaneously scale the effective temperature, orbital frequency and surface density with luminosity and radius according to the standard α-model (Shakura & Sunyaev, 1973). This naturally brings increased dissipation to the disk surface layers (around the photospheres) at small radii and high luminosit…
We investigate structures of hybrid stars, which feature quark core surrounded by a hadronic matter mantle, with super-strong toroidal magnetic fields in full general relativity. Modeling the equation of state (EOS) with a first order transition by bridging the MIT bag model for the description of quark matter and the nuclear EOS by Shen et al., we numerically construct thousands of the equilibrium configurations to study the effects of the phase transition. It is found that the appearance of the quark phase can affect distributions of the magnetic fields inside the hybrid stars, making the ma…

We present the global structure of magnetized advective accretion flow around the rotating black holes in presence of dissipation. By considering accretion flow to be threaded by toroidal magnetic fields and by assuming synchrotron radiative mechanism to be the dominant cooling process, we obtain global transonic accretion solutions in terms of dissipation parameters, such as viscosity ($α_B$), accretion rate (${\dot m}$) and plasma-$β$, respectively. In the rotating magnetized accretion flow, centrifugal barrier is developed in the nearby region of the black hole that triggers the discontinuo…
Modeling of gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission spectra sometimes requires a (quasi-) thermal spectral component in addition to the Band function. In photospheric emission models, a prominent thermal component broadened by sub-photospheric dissipation is expected to be released at the photospheric radius, $r_{\rm ph}\sim10^{12}\,$cm. We consider an ultra-relativistic strongly magnetized outflow with a striped-wind magnetic-field structure undergoing gradual and continuous magnetic energy dissipation at $r<r_s$ that heats and accelerates the flow, leading to a bulk Lorentz factor $Γ(r)=Γ_\inf…
Recent literature has seen an ongoing discussion on the limiting mass of strongly magnetized white dwarfs, since such objects may prove to be a source of over-luminous type-Ia supernovae. In an earlier paper, we have presented the mass-radius relation of white dwarfs with a strong poloidal magnetic field in Newtonian gravity. The inclusion of effects such as general relativistic gravity and many-body corrections to the equation of state can alter the mass-radius relation and the maximum mass. In this work we estimate the extent to which these effects may modify the earlier results. We find tha…
We investigate the local stability of strongly magnetized relativistic tori orbiting Kerr black holes, for the case of a purely toroidal magnetic field topology. Our approach encompasses both solving the full dispersion relation numerically and solving a simplified analytic treatment. Both approaches indicate that such tori are subject to an unstable non-axisymmetric magnetorotational mode, regardless of such background properties as the gas-to-magnetic pressure ratio and specific angular momentum distribution. We demonstrate that our modal analysis matches well with what is seen in global, th…
Equilibrium configurations of the internal magnetic field of a pulsar play a key role in modeling astrophysical phenomena, from glitches to gravitational wave emission. In this paper we present a numerical scheme for solving the Grad-Shafranov equation and calculating equilibrium configurations of pulsars, accounting for superconductivity in the core of the neutron star, and for the Hall effect in the crust of the star. Our numerical code uses a finite-difference method in which the source term appearing in the Grad-Shafranov equation, used to model the magnetic equilibrium is nonlinear. We ob…
We obtain the general forms for the current density and the vorticity from the integrability conditions of the basic equations which govern the stationary states of axisymmetric magnetized self-gravitating barotropic objects with meridional flows under the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) approximation. As seen from the stationary condition equations for such bodies, the presence of the meridional flows and that of the poloidal magnetic fields act oppositely on the internal structures. The different actions of these two physical quantities, the meridional flows and the poloidal magnetic fields…
We investigate non-axisymmetric low frequency modes of a rotating and magnetized neutron star, assuming that the star is threaded by a dipole magnetic field whose strength at the stellar surface, $B_0$, is less than $\sim 10^{12}$G, and whose magnetic axis is aligned with the rotation axis. For modal analysis, we use a neutron star model composed of a fluid ocean, a solid crust, and a fluid core, where we treat the core as being non-magnetic assuming that the magnetic pressure is much smaller than the gas pressure in the core. Here, we are interested in low frequency modes of a rotating and ma…
Magnetars are a special type of neutron stars, considered to have extreme dipole magnetic fields reaching ~1e+11 T. The magnetar 4U 0142+61, one of prototypes of this class, was studied in broadband X-rays (0.5-70 keV) with the Suzaku observatory. In hard X-rays (15-40 keV), its 8.69 sec pulsations suffered slow phase modulations by +/-0.7 sec, with a period of ~15 hours. When this effect is interpreted as free precession of the neutron star, the object is inferred to deviate from spherical symmetry by ~1.6e-4 in its moments of inertia. This deformation, when ascribed to magnetic pressure, sug…
Helicity and αeffect driven by the nonaxisymmetric Tayler instability of toroidal magnetic fields in stellar radiation zones are computed. In the linear approximation a purely toroidal field always excites pairs of modes with identical growth rates but with opposite helicity so that the net helicity vanishes. If the magnetic background field has a helical structure by an extra (weak) poloidal component then one of the modes dominates producing a net kinetic helicity anticorrelated to the current helicity of the background field. The mean electromotive force is computed with the result that the…
We propose that a magnetar could be formed during the core collapse of massive stars or coalescence of two normal neutron stars, through collecting and inheriting the magnetic fields magnified by hyperaccreting disk. After the magnetar is born, its dipole magnetic fields in turn have a major influence on the following accretion. The decay of its toroidal field can fuel the persistent X-ray luminosity of either an SGR or AXP; however the decay of only the poloidal field is insufficient to do so.
We have performed two-dimensional special-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of non-equilibrium over-pressured relativistic jets in cylindrical geometry. Multiple stationary recollimation shock and rarefaction structures are produced along the jet by the nonlinear interaction of shocks and rarefaction waves excited at the interface between the jet and the surrounding ambient medium. Although initially the jet is kinematically dominated, we have considered axial, toroidal and helical magnetic fields to investigate the effects of different magnetic-field topologies and strengths on the…
Relativistic magnetized jets, such as those from AGN, GRBs and XRBs, are susceptible to current- and pressure-driven MHD instabilities that can lead to particle acceleration and non-thermal radiation. Here we investigate the development of these instabilities through 3D kinetic simulations of cylindrically symmetric equilibria involving toroidal magnetic fields with electron-positron pair plasma. Generalizing recent treatments by Alves et al. (2018) and Davelaar et al. (2020), we consider a range of initial structures in which the force due to toroidal magnetic field is balanced by a combinati…
Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) have been suggested to be powered by strongly magnetized, rapidly rotating neutron stars which are often called magnetars. In this process, rotational energy of the magnetar is radiated via magnetic dipole radiation and heats the supernova ejecta. However, if magnetars are highly distorted in their geometric shape, rotational energy is mainly lost as gravitational wave radiation and thus such magnetars cannot power SLSNe. By simply comparing electromagnetic and gravitational wave emission timescales, we constrain upper limits to the ellipticity of magnetars by …
We investigate new solutions for magnetized neutron stars with a barotropic core in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium and a magneto-elastic crust, which was neglected by previous studies concerning stars in MHD equilibrium. The Lorentz force of the barotropic star is purely irrotational and the structures of magnetic fields are constrained. By contrast, a solenoidal component of the Lorentz force exists in the elastic crust and the structures of the magnetic fields are less restricted. We find that the minor solenoidal component in the elastic crust is important for sustaining the strong m…
Stationary and axisymmetric solutions of relativistic rotating stars with strong mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields are obtained numerically. Because of the mixed components of the magnetic field, the underlying stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes are no longer circular. These configurations are computed from the full set of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, Maxwell's equations and from first integrals and integrability conditions of the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium equations. After a brief introduction of the formulation of the problem, we present the first results for highly def…
We considered the effects of convection on the radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAF) in the presence of resistivity and toroidal magnetic field. We discussed the effects of convection on transports of angular momentum and energy. We established two cases for the resistive and magnetized RIAFs with convection: assuming the convection parameter as a free parameter and using mixing-length theory to calculate convection parameter. A self-similar method was used to solve the integrated equations that govern the behavior of the presented model. The solutions showed that the accretion and ro…
We present the effect of a hydrodynamical wind on the structure and the surface temperature of a vertically self-gravitating magnetized ADAFs using self-similar solutions. Also a model for an axisymmetric, steady-state, vertically self-gravitating hot accretion flow threaded by a toroidal magnetic field has been formulated. The model is based on $α-$prescription for turbulence viscosity. It is found that the thickness and radial velocity of the disc are reduced significantly as wind gets stronger. In particular, the solutions indicated that the wind and advection have the same effects on the s…
The main aim of this paper is studying the effect of toroidal magnetic field on the structure of Advection-Dominated Accretion Flows (ADAF) in the presence of the turbulence viscosity and diffusivity due to viscosity and magnetic field respectively. We use self-similar assumption in radial direction to solve the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for hot accretion disk. We use spherical coordinate $ (r, θ, φ) $ to solve our equation. The toroidal component of magnetic field is considered and all three components of the velocity field $ \mathbf{v}\equiv (v_{r}, v_θ, v_φ) $ are present in our w…
Low-order, non-axisymmetric p-modes (also referred as inertial-acoustic modes) trapped in the inner-most region of hydrodynamic accretion discs around black holes, are plausible candidates for high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in a number of accreting black-hole systems. These modes are subject to global instabilities due to wave absorption at the corotation resonance (where the wave pattern frequency $ω/m$ equals the disc rotation rate $Ω$), when the fluid vortensity, $ζ=κ^2/(2ΩΣ)$ (where $κ$ and $Σ$ are the radial epicyclic frequency and disc surface density, respect…
The topic of magnetized super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs is in the limelight, particularly in the last few years, since our proposal of their existence. By full-scale general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) numerical analysis, we confirm in this work the existence of stable, highly magnetized, significantly super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs with mass more than 3 solar mass. While a poloidal field geometry renders the white dwarfs oblate, a toroidal field makes them prolate retaining an overall quasi-spherical shape, as speculated in our earlier work. These white dwarfs are expected to …
The recently discovered gamma-ray flares from the Crab nebula are generally attributed to the magnetic energy release in a highly magnetized region within the nebula. I argue that such a region naturally arises in the polar region of the inner nebula. In pulsar winds, efficient dissipation of the Poynting flux into the plasma energy occur only in the equatorial belt where the energy is predominantly transferred by alternating fields. At high latitudes, the pulsar wind remains highly magnetized therefore the termination shock in the polar region is weak and the postshock flow remains relativist…
Relativistic magnetized jets are key elements in Active Galactic Nuclei and in other astrophysical environments. Their structure and evolution involves a complex nonlinear physics that can be approached by numerical studies only. Still, owing to a number of challenging computational aspects, only a few numerical investigations have been undertaken so far. In this paper, we present high-resolution three dimensional numerical simulations of relativistic magnetized jets carrying an initially toroidal magnetic field. The presence of a substantial toroidal component of the field is nowadays commonl…
We solved the set of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for optically thin black hole accretion flows incorporating toroidal component of magnetic field. Following global and local MHD simulations of black hole accretion disks, the magnetic field inside the disk is decomposed into a large scale field and a fluctuating field. The effects of the fluctuating magnetic field in transferring the angular momentum and dissipating the energy are described through the usual $ α$ description. We solved the MHD equations by assuming steady state and radially self-similar approximation in …
The aim of this paper is to clarify the stabilities of neutron stars with strong toroidal magnetic fields against non-axisymmetric perturbation. The motivation comes from the fact that super magnetized neutron stars of $\sim 10^{15}$G, magnetars, and magnetized proto-neutron stars born after the magnetically-driven supernovae are likely to have such strong toroidal magnetic fields. Long-term, three-dimensional general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic simulations are performed, preparing isentropic neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields in equilibrium as initial conditions. To explore the…
We study the magnetosphere of a slowly rotating magnetized neutron star subject to toroidal oscillations in the relativistic regime. Under the assumption of a zero inclination angle between the magnetic moment and the angular momentum of the star, we analyze the Goldreich-Julian charge density and derive a second-order differential equation for the electrostatic potential. The analytical solution of this equation in the polar cap region of the magnetosphere shows the modification induced by stellar toroidal oscillations on the accelerating electric field and on the charge density. We also find…
The dynamics of magnetic field decay with Hall drift is investigated. Assuming that axisymmetric magnetic fields are located in a spherical crust with uniform conductivity and electron number density, long-term evolution is calculated up to Ohmic dissipation. The nonlinear coupling between poloidal and toroidal components is explored in terms of their energies and helicity. Nonlinear oscillation by the drift in strongly magnetized regimes is clear only around the equipartition between two components. Significant energy is transferred to the poloidal component when the toroidal component initia…
Highly magnetized neutron stars are promising candidates to explain some of the most peculiar astronomical phenomena, for instance, fast radio bursts, gamma-ray bursts, and superluminous supernovae. Pulsations of these highly magnetized neutron stars are also speculated to produce detectable gravitational waves. In addition, pulsations are important probes of the structure and equation of state of the neutron stars. The major challenge in studying the pulsations of highly magnetized neutron stars is the demanding numerical cost of consistently solving the nonlinear Einstein and Maxwell equatio…
We study semi-analytical time-dependent solutions of the relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for the fields and the fluid emerging from a spherical source. We assume uniform expansion of the field and the fluid and a polytropic relation between the density and the pressure of the fluid. The expansion velocity is small near the base but approaches the speed of light at the light sphere where the flux terminates. We find self-consistent solutions for the density and the magnetic flux. The details of the solution depend on the ratio of the toroidal and the poloidal magnetic field, th…
We explore a new, efficient mechanism that can power toroidally magnetized jets up to two to three times their original terminal velocity after they enter a self-similar phase of magnetic acceleration. Underneath the elongated outflow lobe formed by a magnetized bubble, a wide-angle free wind, through the interplay with its ambient toroid, is compressed and accelerated around its axial jet. The extremely magnetic bubble can inflate over its original size, depending on the initial Alfvén Mach number $M_A$ of the launched flow. The shape-independent slope $\partial{}v_r/\partial{}r=2/3t$ is a sa…
By taking into account the effect of toroidal magnetic field and its correspond heating, we determine the thickness of advection-dominated accretion flows. We consider an axisymetric, rotating, steady viscous-resistive, magnetized accretion flow under an advection dominated stage. The dominant mechanism of energy dissipation is assumed to be turbulence viscosity and magnetic diffusivity. We adopt a self-similar assumption in the radial direction to obtain the dynamical quantities, that is, radial, azimuthal, sound and Alfv\' en velocities. Our results show the vertical component of magnetic fo…
