We construct ribbon surfaces of Euler characteristic one for several infinite families of alternating 3-braid closures. We also use a twisted Alexander polynomial obstruction to conclude the classification of smoothly slice knots which are closures of alternating 3-braids with up to 20 crossings.
Combining the results by Birman and Goldberg, it was proved the normal closure of the pure braid group of the disk $P_n(D)$ in the pure braid group of the torus $P_n(T)$ is the commutator subgroup $[P_n(T),P_n(T)]$. In this paper we are going to study the case for full braid groups: i.e. the normal closure of $B_n(D)$ in $B_n(T)$, which turns out to have an interesting geometric description.
We study the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality for closures of simple braids (also known as positive permutation braids). This allows to prove, in a simple way, that the set of simple braids is a orthonormal basis for the inner product of the Hecke algebra of the braid group defined by Kálmán, who first obtained this result by using an interesting connection with Contact Topology. We also introduce a new technique to study the Homflypt polynomial for closures of positive braids, namely resolution trees whose leaves are simple braids. In terms of these simple resolution trees, we characterize c…
We use the Birman-Ko-Lee presentation of the braid group to show that all closures of strongly quasipositive braids whose normal form contains a positive power of the dual Garside element $δ$ are fibered. We classify links which admit such a braid representative in geometric terms as boundaries of plumbings of positive Hopf bands to a disk. Rudolph constructed fibered strongly quasipositive links as closures of positive words on certain generating sets of $B_n$ and we prove that Rudolph's condition is equivalent to ours. Finally, we show that the braid index is a strict upper bound for the num…
Let n be a positive integer. We provide a Khovanov homology proof of the following classical fact: If the closure of an n-strand braid is the n-component unlink, then the braid is trivial.
We give some new link detection results for link Floer homology, Khovanov homology and annular Khovanov homology. The links we detect arise via different closure operations on $3$-braids. Examples of our results include that link Floer homology detects the Mazur link, that annular Khovanov homology detects the Mazur pattern, and that Khovanov homology detects L6a2 and L9n15. The Mazur pattern detection result depends on a new bound on the rank of the annular Khovanov homology of certain links.
Twisting a knot $K$ in $S^3$ along a disjoint unknot $c$ produces a twist family of knots $\{K_n\}$ indexed by the integers. Comparing the behaviors of the Seifert genus $g(K_n)$ and the slice genus $g_4(K_n)$ under twistings, we prove that if $g(K_n) - g_4(K_n) < C$ for some constant $C$ for infinitely many integers $n > 0$ or $g(K_n) / g_4(K_n) \to 1$ as $n \to \infty$, then either the winding number of $K$ about $c$ is zero or the winding number equals the wrapping number. As a key application, if $\{K_n\}$ or the mirror twist family $\{\overline{K_n}\}$ contains infinitely many tight fiber…
We provide linear lower bounds for the signature of positive braids in terms of the three genus of their braid closure. This yields linear bounds for the topological slice genus of knots that arise as closures of positive braids.
We prove that for knots and links that are closures of 5-braids, single-colored ADO-invariant of third order coincides with Links-Gould polynomial with specific choice of variables. We also conjecture that this is true for any knots and links and provide some arguments for that.
The relationships between braid ordering and the geometry of its closure is studied. We prove that if an essential closed surface $F$ in the complements of closed braid has relatively small genus with respect to the Dehornoy floor of the braid, $F$ is circular-foliated in a sense of Birman-Menasco's Braid foliation theory. As an application of the result, we prove that if Dehornoy floor of braids are larger than three, Nielsen-Thurston classification of braids and the geometry of their closure's complements are in one-to-one correspondence. Using this result, we construct infinitely many hyper…
Strongly quasipositive links are those links which can be seen as closures of positive braids in terms of band generators. In this paper we give a necessary condition for a link with braid index 3 to be strongly quasipositive, by proving that in that case it has positive Conway polynomial (that is, all its coefficients are non-negative). We also show that this result cannot be extended to a higher number of strands, as we provide a strongly quasipositive braid whose closure has non-positive Conway polynomial.
We study a certain type of braid closure which resembles the plat closure but has certain advantages; for example, it maps pure braids to knots. The main results of this note are a Markov-type theorem and a description of how Vassiliev invariants behave under this braid closure.
Let $β$ be a braid on $n$ strands, with exponent sum $w$. Let $Δ$ be the Garside half-twist braid. We prove that the coefficient of $v^{w-n+1}$ in the Homfly polynomial of the closure of $β$ agrees with $(-1)^{n-1}$ times the coefficient of $v^{w+n^2-1}$ in the Homfly polynomial of the closure of $βΔ^2$. This coincidence implies that the lower Morton--Franks-Williams estimate for the $v$--degree of the Homfly polynomial of $\hatβ$ is sharp if and only if the upper MFW estimate is sharp for the $v$--degree of the Homfly polynomial of $\hat{βΔ^2}$.
This paper establishes that sutured annular Khovanov homology is not invariant for braid closures under axis-preserving mutations. This follows from an explicit relationship between sutured annular Khovanov homology and the classical Burau representation for braid closures.
In classical knot theory, Markov's theorem gives a way of describing all braids with isotopic closures as links in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We present a version of Markov's theorem for extended loop braids with closure in $B^3 \times S^1$, as a first step towards a Markov's theorem for extended loop braids and ribbon torus-links in $\mathbb{R}^4$.
We show that any knot which is smoothly the closure of a 3-braid cannot be Lagrangian concordant to and from the maximum Thurston-Bennequin Legendrian unknot except the unknot itself. Our obstruction comes from drawing the Weinstein handlebody diagrams of particular symplectic fillings of cyclic branched double covers of knots in $S^3$. We use the Legendrian contact homology differential graded algebra of the links in these diagrams to compute the symplectic homology of these fillings to derive a contradiction. As a corollary, we find an infinite family of contact manifolds which are rational …
The notion of free link is a generalized notion of virtual link. In the present paper we define the group of free braids, prove the Alexander theorem that all free links can be obtained as closures of free braids and prove a Markov theorem, which gives necessary and sufficient conditions for two free braids to have the same free link closure. Our result is expected to be useful in study the topology invariants for free knots and links.
It is well known that any link can be represented by the closure of a braid. The minimum number of strings needed in a braid whose closure represents a given link is called the braid index of the link and the well known Morton-Frank-Williams inequality reveals a close relationship between the HOMFLY polynomial of a link and its braid index. In the case that a link is already presented in a closed braid form, Jaeger derived a special formulation of the HOMFLY polynomial. In this paper, we prove a variant of Jaeger's result as well as a dual version of it. Unlike Jaeger's original reasoning, whi…
We show that if a braid $B$ can be parametrised in a certain way, then previous work can be extended to a construction of a polynomial $f:\mathbb{R}^4\to\mathbb{R}^2$ with the closure of $B$ as the link of an isolated singularity of $f$, showing that the closure of $B$ is real algebraic. In particular, we prove that closures of squares of strictly homogeneous braids and certain lemniscate links are real algebraic. We also show that the constructed polynomials satisfy the strong Milnor condition, providing an explicit fibration of the complement of the closure of $B$ over $S^1$.
Khovanov and Rozansky's categorification of the HOMFLY-PT polynomial is invariant under braidlike isotopies for any link diagram and Markov moves for braid closures. To define HOMFLY-PT homology, they required a link to be presented as a braid closure, because they did not prove invariance under the other oriented Reidemeister moves. In this text we prove that the Reidemeister IIb move fails in HOMFLY-PT homology by using virtual crossing filtrations of the author and Rozansky. The decategorification of HOMFLY-PT homology for general link diagrams gives a deformed version of the HOMFLY-PT poly…
A previous work of A. Conway and the author introduced $L^2$-Burau maps of braids, which are generalizations of the Burau representation whose coefficients live in a more general group ring than the one of Laurent polynomials. This same work established that the $L^2$-Burau map of a braid at the group of the braid closure yields the $L^2$-Alexander torsion of the braid closure in question, as a variant of the well-known Burau-Alexander formula. In the present paper, we generalize the previous result to $L^2$-Burau maps defined over all quotients of the group of the braid closure. The link inva…
Is any positive knot the closure of a positive braid? No. But if we consider positivity in terms of the generators of the braid group due to Birman, Ko and Lee, then the answer is yes. In this paper we prove that the same occurs when considering homogeneity. In the way we prove that the plumbing of two surfaces is a BKL-homogeneous surface if and only if both summands are BKL-homogeneous surfaces, a parallel result to that of Rudolph involving quasipositive surfaces. BKL-homogeneous surfaces are, in fact, a natural generalization of quasipositive surfaces.
We discuss how to apply work of L. Rudolph to braid conjugacy class invariants to obtain potentially effective obstructions to a slice knot being ribbon. We then apply these ideas to a family of braid conjugacy class invariants coming from Khovanov-Lee theory and explain why we do not obtain effective ribbon obstructions in this case.
Taking the signature of the closure of a braid defines a map from the braid group to the integers. In 2005, Gambaudo and Ghys expressed the homomorphism defect of this map in terms of the Meyer cocycle and the Burau representation. In the present paper, we simultaneously extend this result in two directions, considering the multivariable signature of the closure of a colored tangle. The corresponding defect is expressed in terms of the Maslov index and of the Lagrangian functor defined by Turaev and the first-named author.
To a braid $β\in Br_n$ we associate a complex of sheaves $S_β$ on $Hilb_n(C^2)$ such that the previously defined triply graded link homology of the closure $L(β)$ is isomorphic to the homology of $S_β$. The construction of $S_β$ relies on the Chern functor $CH: MF_n^{st}\to D^{per}_{C^*\times C^*}(Hilb_n(C^2))$ defined in the paper together with its adjoint functor $HC$. We prove a formula for the closure of sufficiently positive elements of the Jucys-Murphy algebra previously conjectured by Gorsky, Negut and Rasmussen.
We estimate from above the set of knots, $Ω(n,μ)$, generated by closure of n-string 1+1- and 2+1-dimensional braids of irreducible length $μ$ ($μ>>1$) in the limit n>>1.
These notes are based on the lectures given by the author during Winter Braids IX in Reims in March 2019. We discuss slice knots and why they are interesting, as well as some ways to decide if a given knot is or is not slice. We describe various methods for drawing diagrams of double branched covers of knots in the 3-sphere and surfaces in the 4-ball, and how these can be useful to decide if an alternating knot is slice. We include a description of the computer search for slice alternating knots due to the author and Frank Swenton.
We introduce a monoid corresponding to knotted surfaces in four space, from its hyperbolic splitting represented by marked diagram in braid like form. It has four types of generators: two standard braid generators and two of singular type. Then we state relations on words that follows from topological Yoshikawa moves. As a direct application we will show equivalence of some known theorems about twist-spun knots. We wish then to investigate an index associated to the closure of surface singular braid monoid. Using our relations we will prove that there are exactly six types of knotted surfaces …
Taking the Levine-Tristram signature of the closure of a braid defines a map from the braid group to the integers. A formula of Gambaudo and Ghys provides an evaluation of the homomorphism defect of this map in terms of the Burau representation and the Meyer cocycle. In 2017 Cimasoni and Conway generalized this formula to the multivariable signature of the closure of coloured tangles. In the present paper, we extend even further their result by using a different 4-dimensional interpretation of the signature. We obtain an evaluation of the additivity defect in terms of the Maslov index and the …
Given a knot in $S^3$, one can associate to it a surface diffeomorphism in two different ways. First, an arbitrary knot in $S^{3}$ can be represented by braids, which can be thought of as diffeomorphisms of punctured disks. Second, if the knot is fibered -- that is, if its complement fibers over $S^1$ -- one can consider the monodromy of the fibration. One can ask to what extent properties of these surface diffeomorphisms dictate topological properties of the corresponding knot. In this article we collect observations, conjectures, and questions addressing this, from both the braid perspective…
We analyze relationships between quantum computation and a family of generalizations of the Jones polynomial. Extending recent work by Aharonov et al., we give efficient quantum circuits for implementing the unitary Jones-Wenzl representations of the braid group. We use these to provide new quantum algorithms for approximately evaluating a family of specializations of the HOMFLYPT two-variable polynomial of trace closures of braids. We also give algorithms for approximating the Jones polynomial of a general class of closures of braids at roots of unity. Next we provide a self-contained proof o…
We investigate the local contribution of the braid monodromy factorization in the context of the links obtained by the closure of these braids. We consider plane curves which are arrangements of lines and conics as well as some algebraic surfaces, where some of the former occur as local configurations in degenerated and regenerated surfaces in the latter. In particular we focus on degenerations which involve intersection points of multiplicity two and three. We demonstrate when the same links arise even when the local arrangements are different.
The closure of a braid in a closed orientable surface $Σ$ is a link in $Σ\times S^1$. We classify such closed surface braids up to isotopy and homeomorphism (with a small indeterminacy for isotopy of closed sphere braids), algebraically in terms of the surface braid group. We find that in positive genus, braids close to isotopic links if and only if they are conjugate, and close to homeomorphic links if and only if they are in the same orbit of the outer action of the mapping class group on the surface braid group modulo its center.
We construct a braid conjugacy class invariant $κ$ by refining Plamenevskaya's transverse element $ψ$ in Khovanov homology via the annular grading. While $κ$ is not an invariant of transverse links, it distinguishes some braids whose closures share the same classical invariants but are not transversely isotopic. Using $κ$ we construct an obstruction to negative destabilization (stronger than $ψ$) and a solution to the word problem in braid groups. Also, $κ$ is a lower bound on the length of the spectral sequence from annular Khovanov homology to Khovanov homology, and we obtain concrete exampl…
We prove a Markov theorem for tame links in a connected closed orientable 3-manifold $M$ with respect to a plat-like representation. More precisely, given a genus $g$ Heegaard surface $Σ_g$ for $M$ we represent each link in $M$ as the plat closure of a braid in the surface braid group $B_{g,2n}=π_1(C_{2n}(Σ_g))$ and analyze how to translate the equivalence of links in $M$ under ambient isotopy into an algebraic equivalence in $B_{g,2n}$. First, we study the equivalence problem in $Σ_g\times [0,1]$, and then, to obtain the equivalence in $M$, we investigate how isotopies corresponding to "slidi…
For a null-homologous transverse link $\mathcal T$ in a general contact manifold with an open book, we explore strongly quasipositive braids and Bennequin surfaces. We define the defect $δ(\mathcal T)$ of the Bennequin-Eliashberg inequality. We study relations between $δ(\mathcal T)$ and minimal genus Bennequin surfaces of $\mathcal T$. In particular, in the disk open book case, under some large fractional Dehn twist coefficient assumption, we show that $δ(\mathcal T)=N$ if and only if $\mathcal T$ is the boundary of a Bennequin surface with exactly $N$ negatively twisted bands. That is, the B…
We study the unwrapped Fukaya category of Lagrangian branes ending on a Legendrian knot. Our knots live at contact infinity in the cotangent bundle of a surface, the Fukaya category of which is equivalent to the category of constructible sheaves on the surface itself. Consequently, our category can be described as constructible sheaves with singular support controlled by the front projection of the knot. We use a theorem of Guillermou-Kashiwara-Schapira to show that the resulting category is invariant under Legendrian isotopies, and conjecture it is equivalent to the representation category of…
