We develop a "self-avoiding walks" approximation and use it to calculate the spectral function of a single hole introduced into the 2D square lattice Ising antiferromagnet. The obtained local spectral function qualitatively agrees with the exact diagonalisation result and is largely incoherent. Such a result stays in contrast with the spectrum obtained on a Bethe lattice, which consists of the well-separated quasiparticle-like peaks and stems from the motion of a hole in an effective linear potential. We determine that this onset of the incoherent spectrum on a square lattice (i) is not triggered by the so-called Trugman loops but (ii) originates in the warping of the linear potential by the interactions between magnons created along the tangential paths of the moving hole.
Using an exact diagonalization treatment of Ising and Heisenberg model Hamiltonians, we study field-induced phase transition for two-dimensional antiferromagnets. For the system of Ising antiferromagnet the predicted field-induced phase transition is of first order, while for the system of Heisenberg antiferromagnet it is the second-order transition. We find from the exact diagonalization calculations that the second-order phase transition (metamagnetism) occurs through a spin-flop process as an intermediate step.
Motivated by recent experiments on TmB4 (arXiv:0712.1537), we examine the phase diagram of the Shastry-Sutherland antiferromagnet in an applied magnetic field in the limit of strong Ising anisotropy. In classical Ising limit, we demonstrate that the only fractional magnetization plateau is at 1/3 of the saturated magnetization. We study the perturbative influence of transverse quantum spin fluctuations, and present evidence that they can stabilize a narrow 1/2 magnetization plateau.
We use a Monte Carlo simulation to study the diluted antiferromagnetic Ising model on the frustrated lattices including the pyrochlore lattice to show the dilution effects. Using the Wang-Landau algorithm, which directly calculates the energy density of states, we accurately calculate the entropy of the system. We discuss the nonmonotonic dilution concentration dependence of residual entropy for the antiferromagnetic Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice, and compare it to the generalized Pauling approximation proposed by Ke et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 137203 (2007)]. We also investigate othe…
Neutron inelastic scattering measurements have been performed in order to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$. We observed the magnetic excitation, which corresponds to the spin-wave excitation continuum corresponding to the domain-wall pair excitation in the 1D Ising-like antiferromagnet. According to the Ishimura-Shiba theory, we analyzed the observed spin-wave excitation, and the exchange constant $2J$ and the anistropy $ε$ were estimated as 14.7 meV and 0.14 in TlCoCl$_3$, respectively.
We report the single-crystal growth and the fundamental magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a rare-earth triangular lattice antiferromagnet CeCd$_3$As$_3$. In this rare-earth antiferromagnet, the Ce local moments form a perfect triangular lattice. Due to the spin-orbital-entangled nature of the Ce local moments, the compound exhibits extremely anisotropic antiferromagnetic couplings along the c direction and in the ab plane respectively. We show that CeCd$_3$As$_3$ represents a {\it rare} experimental realization of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a two dimensional triangular lattice …
Polarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been carried out in the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl$_3$. We observed the longitudinal magnetic fluctuation $S_{zz} (Q, ω)$ for the spin-wave excitation continuum, which has not been observed in the unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments of the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnets CsCoCl$_3$ and TlCoCl$_3$ so far, together with the transverse magnetic fluctuation $S_{xx} (Q, ω)$. We compared both obtained intensities of $S_{xx} (Q, ω)$ and $S_{zz} (Q, ω)$ with the perturbation theory from the pure Ising limit b…
The results of extensive histogram cluster heat-bath Monte Carlo simulations on the critical behavior of the quasi-one dimensional Ising antiferromagnet on a stacked triangular lattice are presented. A small applied field is shown to induce a crossover from XY universality to mean-field tricritical behavior. Experimental estimates of critical exponents suggest that these two types of phase transitions are observed in S=1 CsNiCl$_3$ and $S=1/2$ CsCoBr$_3$, respectively. The present results demonstrate that this difference can be explained by an unusual staggered magnetic field arising from quan…
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the critical behavior of two models of frustrated XY antiferromagnets with a collinear spin ordering and with an additional twofold degeneracy of the ground state. We consider a classic antiferromagnet on a body-centered cubic lattice with an additional antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between next-nearest spins, and a ferromagnet with an extra antiferromagnetic intralayer exchange. In both models, a single first-order transition on the discrete and continuous order parameters is found. Observed critical pseudo-exponents are in agreement with expon…
$S$ = 1/2 Ising kagome antiferromagnets (KAFs) are rare in reality. In this work, we report the magnetic ground state and field-induced transitions of an $S$ = 1/2 Ising antiferromagnet with a stacked kagome geometry, Na$_5$Co$_{15.5}$Te$_6$O$_{36}$. Upon cooling, magnetic susceptibility measurement reveals three successive magnetic transitions at $T_1$ = 45.2 K, $T_2$ = 35.4 K, and $T_3 \sim$ 20 K. When the magnetic field is applied along the Ising $c$ axis, a strikingly anomalous initial magnetization lying outside the hysteresis loop is observed below $T_3$. Through the detailed characteriz…
We have measured the linear thermal expansion and magnetostriction of the Ising antiferromagnet TbNi2Ge2 along its c-axis from room temperature to 2 K and in magnetic fields to 14 T. We find a magnetic phase diagram that agrees with earlier work and estimate aspects of its uniaxial pressure dependence. We also find a new high field feature near 10 T which may signal the onset of an additional field-induced phase.
Working within the Stochastic Series Expansion (SSE) framework, we construct efficient quantum cluster algorithms for transverse field Ising antiferromagnets on the pyrochlore lattice and the planar pyrochlore lattice, for the fully frustrated square lattice Ising model in a transverse field (dual to the 2+1 dimensional odd Ising gauge theory), and for a transverse field Ising model with multi-spin interactions on the square lattice, which is dual to a 2+1 dimensional even Ising gauge theory (and reduces to the two dimensional quantum loop model in a certain limit). Our cluster algorithms use …
It is shown that the mechanism of order out of disorder is at work in the antisymmetric pyrochlore antiferromagnet. Quantum as well as thermal fluctuations break the continuous degeneracy of the classical ground state manifold and reduce its symmetry to $\mathbb{Z}_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$. The role of anisotropic symmetric exchange is also investigated and we conclude that this discrete like ordering is robust with respect to these second order like interactions. The antisymmetric pyrochlore antiferromagnet is therefore expected to order at low temperatures, whatever the symmetry type of its in…
Combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one dimensional Ising anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet \bacovo\ in a longitudinal magnetic field. This material shows a quantum phase transition from a Néel ordered phase at zero field to a longitudinal incommensurate spin density wave at a critical magnetic field of 3.8 T. Concomitantly the excitation gap almost closes and a fundamental reconfiguration of the spin dynamics occurs. These experimental results are well described by the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory developed for interacting spinl…
We present a detailed magnetic study of the triangular antiferromagnet ErMgGaO$_4$. A point charge calculation under the single ion approximation reveals a crystal field ground state doublet with a strong Ising-like behavior of the Er$^{3+}$ moment along the c axis. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements indicate no presence of magnetic transitions above 0.5~K and no evidence of residual entropy as temperature approaching zero. Zero field (ZF) $μ$SR measurements shows no sign of static uniform or random field and longitudinal field (LF) $μ$SR measurements exhibit persistent spi…
We study the quantum Ising antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice, with weak transverse field dynamics and other local perturbations. We analytically demonstrate the possibility of a disordered zero-temperature phase that is smoothly connected to the phase at strong transverse fields. This is done by means of an appropriate mapping to a compact U(1) gauge theory on the honeycomb lattice that is coupled to a charge-1 matter field. Our results are consistent with existing Monte-Carlo calculations. The differences with other commonly studied lattices (in which such disordered phases do not obtain …
We investigate the low-temperature properties of the Ising-like screw chain antiferromagnet SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under a longitudinal magnetic field by susceptibility and $^{51}$V NMR measurements. The bulk susceptibility $χ$ shows an onset of long-range Ising-antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and the suppression of the order by field with the Néel temperature dropped from 5.1~K to 2~K when field increases from 0.1~T to 4~T. The suppression of the AFM order by the field is also observed by the NMR spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation $1/T_1$. At fields above 4~T, $χ$ shows a low-temperature uptur…
We study the Ising antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice which are interacting along three different directions via two $J$-bonds and one anisotropic $J'$-bond with $J' \ge J$. Although its finite temperature state has long been considered as simply disordered, we find a systematic generation of a ferromagnetic $J'$-bonds named "good defects" each carrying the energy $2δ_J\equiv 2(J'-J)$. They exhibit an eminent correlation which is regarded as a network or a soft lattice. The specific heat shows a universal peak at $T^* \sim δ_J$ and the corresponding energy follows the activation type of…
We show that a proper consideration of the contribution of Trugman loops leads to a fairly low effective mass for a hole moving in a square lattice Ising antiferromagnet, if the bare hopping and the exchange energy scales are comparable. This contradicts the general view that because of the absence of spin fluctuations, this effective mass must be extremely large. Moreover, in the presence of a transverse magnetic field, we show that the effective hopping integrals acquire an unusual dependence on the magnetic field, through Aharonov-Bohm interference, in addition to significant retardation ef…
Using novel instrumentation to combine extreme conditions of intense pulsed magnetic field up to 60~T and high pressure up to 4~GPa, we have established the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field - pressure - temperature phase diagram of a pure stoichiometric heavy-fermion antiferromagnet (CeRh$_2$Si$_2$). We find a temperature- and pressure-dependent decoupling of the critical and pseudo-metamagnetic fields, at the borderlines of antiferromagnetism and strongly-correlated paramagnetism. This 3D phase diagram is representative of a class of heavy-fermion Ising antiferromagnets, where long-range…
From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co$^{\rm 2+}$ spin compound BaCo$_{\rm 2}$V$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N{\' e}el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering.
Based on exact diagonalization data for finite quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on two frustrated lattices (two-leg ladder and bilayer) and analytical arguments we map low-energy degrees of freedom of the spin models in a magnetic field on classical lattice-gas models. Further we use transfer-matrix calculations and classical Monte Carlo simulations to give a quantitative description of low-temperature thermodynamics of the quantum spin models. The classical lattice-gas model yields an excellent description of the quantum spin models up to quite large temperatures. The main peculiarity of t…
We consider the one-dimensional Ising-like fully anisotropic S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian and study the dynamics of domain wall excitations in the presence of transverse magnetic field $h_x$. We obtain dynamical spin correlation functions along the magnetic field $S^{xx}(q,ω)$ and perpendicular to it $S^{yy}(q,ω)$. It is shown that the line shapes of $S^{xx}(q,ω)$ and $S^{yy}(q,ω)$ are purely symmetric at the zone-boundary. It is observed in $S^{yy}(q,ω)$ for $π/2<q<π$ that the spectral weight moves toward low energy side with the increase of $h_x$. This model is applicable t…
Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) on wide cylinders, we study the phase diagram of the spin-1/2 XY model on the honeycomb lattice, with first-neighbor ($J_1 = 1$) and frustrating second-neighbor ($J_2>0$) interactions. For the intermediate frustration regime $0.22\lesssim J_2\lesssim0.36$, we find a surprising antiferromagnetic Ising phase, with ordered moments pointing along the z axis, despite the absence of any S_z_z interactions in the Hamiltonian. Surrounding this phase as a function of $J_2$ are antiferromagnetic phases with the moments pointing in the $x-y$ plane for…
Geometrical frustration in spin systems often results in a large number of degenerate ground states. In this work we study the antiferromagnetic Ising model on the three dimensional swedenborgite lattice which is a specific stacking of Kagomé and triangular layers. The model contains two exchange couplings, one within the Kagomé layer, another one in between Kagomé and triangular layers. We determine the phase diagram with and without easy axis magnetic field and calculate the ground state degeneracy explicitly in terms of the residual entropy. At zero field we find two different ground state …

It is shown that nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions of identical Ising spins on imbalanced bipartite lattice and imbalanced bipartite hierarchical fractal result in ferrimagnetic order instead of antiferromagnetic one. On some crystal lattices dilute Ising antiferromagnets may also become ferrimagnets due to the imbalanced nature of the magnetic percolation cluster when it coexists with the percolation cluster of vacancies. As evidenced by the existing experiments on $Fe_pZn_{1-p}F_2$, such ferrimagnetism is inherent property of bcc lattice so thermodynamics of these compounds at …
We explore the spin dynamics emerging from the Néel phase of the chain compound antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8. Our inelastic neutron scattering study reveals unconventional discrete spin excitations, so called Zeeman ladders, understood in terms of spinon confinement, due to the interchain attractive linear potential. These excitations consist in two interlaced series of modes, respectively with transverse and longitudinal polarization. The latter have no classical counterpart and are related to the zero-point fluctuations that weaken the ordered moment in weakly coupled quantum chains. Our analys…
Disordered magnetic states known as spin liquids are of paramount importance in both fundamental and applied science. A classical state of this kind was predicted for the Ising antiferromagnetic triangular model more than half a century ago, while additional non-commuting exchange terms were proposed to induce its quantum version -- a quantum spin liquid. These predictions have not been yet confirmed experimentally. Here we report a discovery of such a state in the structurally perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdTa$_7$O$_{19}$. Its magnetic ground state is characterized by spin-1/2 d…
We study the phase diagram of the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with spin-dependent anisotropic hopping at half-filling. The system develops Ising antiferromagnetic long-range order already at infinitesimal repulsive interaction strength in the ground state. Outside the perturbative regime, unbiased predictions for the critical temperatures of the Ising antiferromagnet are made for representative interaction values by a variety of state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo methods, including the diagrammatic Monte Carlo, continuous-time determinantal Monte Carlo and path-integral Monte Car…
We study the $S = 1$ triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet by Monte Carlo simulations. Frustrations between a major antiferromagnetic third-neighbor interaction $J_3$ and a minor ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction $J_1$ cause incommensurate short-range orders at intermediate temperatures. At low temperatures (below $T/J_3 \lesssim 0.2$ for $J_1/J_3 = -1/3$), the system exhibits fourfold periodic ordered state. In the short-range order phase, the system shows a glassy two-step relaxation. We demonstrate that the features of the short-range order are attributed to the cooperation betw…
The generalized decoration-iteration transformation is adopted to treat exactly a hybrid model of doubly decorated two-dimensional lattices, which have localized Ising spins at their nodal lattice sites and itinerant electrons delocalized over pairs of decorating sites. Under the assumption of a half filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the investigated model system exhibits a remarkable spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order with an obvious quantum reduction of the staggered magnetization. It is shown that the critical temperature of the spontaneously long-range ordered qua…
We investigate magnetic properties of lightly doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulators in the presence of non-magnetic impurities. Within the framework of the t-J model we calculate the doping dependence of the antiferromagnetic order parameter using the self-consistent diagrammatic techniques. We show that in the presence of non-magnetic impurities the antiferromagnetic order is more robust against hole doping in comparison with the impurity-free host, implying that magnetic order can re-appear upon Zn doping into lightly hole-doped cuprates. We argue that this is primarily due to the loss of …
We study multilayer triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnets with interlayer interactions that are weak and frustrated in an abc stacking. By analysing a coupled height model description of these systems, we show that they exhibit a classical spin liquid regime at low temperature, in which both intralayer and interlayer correlations are strong but there is no long range order. Diffuse scattering in this regime is concentrated on a helix in reciprocal space, as observed for charge-ordering in the materials LuFe$_2$O$_4$ and YbFe$_2$O$_4$.
An effective-field theory based on the single-spin cluster has been used to study of a diluted spin-$1/2$ Ising antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice with nearest-neighbor interactions. We observe five plateaus in the magnetization curve of the diluted antiferromagnet when a magnetic field is applied which is in agreement with Monte Carlo calculation. The effect of the site-dilution on the magnetic susceptibility is also investigated and discussed. In particular, we have found that the frustrated Kagome lattice inverse susceptibility fall to zero at $0$K.
Using a specially designed Monte Carlo algorithm with directed loops, we investigate the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet with coupling beyond nearest neighbour. We show that the first-order transition from the stripe state to the paramagnet can be split, giving rise to an intermediate nematic phase in which algebraic correlations coexist with a broken symmetry. Furthermore, we demonstrate the emergence of several properties of a more topological nature such as fractional edge excitations in the stripe state, the proliferation of double domain walls in the nematic phase, and the Kastel…
We study the triangular-lattice Ising model with dipolar interactions, inspired by its realisation in artificial arrays of nanomagnets. We show that a classical spin-liquid forms at intermediate temperatures, and that its behaviour can be tuned by temperature and/or a small lattice distortion between a string Luttinger liquid and a domain-wall-network state. At low temperature there is a transition into a magnetically ordered phase, which can be first-order or continous with a crossover in the critical behaviour between Pokrovsky-Talapov and 2D-Ising universality. When the Pokrovsky-Talapov cr…
We report systematic low temperature measurements of the DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, and heat capacity of dysprosium pyrogermanate (Dy2Ge2O7) single crystal and powder samples. Our results confirm that Dy2Ge2O7 is an anisotropic antiferromagnet. The isothermal field dependent magnetization and the integrated magnetic entropy both indicate that the Dy3+ ions behave as Ising-like spins, analogous to those in the pyrochlore spin ice materials. Both single-spin and collective spin relaxation phenomena appear to lead to spin freezing in this material, again in analogy to observations in th…
For quasi-one dimensional quantum spin systems theory predicts the occurrence of a confinement of spinon excitation due to interchain couplings. Here we investigate the system SrCo2V2O8, a realization of the weakly-coupled Ising-like XXZ antiferromagnetic chains, by terahertz spectroscopy with and without applied magnetic field. At low temperatures a series of excitations is observed, which split in a Zeeman-like fashion in an applied magnetic field. These magnetic excitations are identified as the theoretically predicted spinon-pair excitations. Using a one dimensional Schrödinger equation wi…
Saturation field entropies of antiferromagnetic Ising models on quasi one-dimensional lattices (ladders) and the kagome lattice are calculated. The former is evaluated exactly by constructing the corresponding transfer matrices, while the latter calculation uses Binder's algorithm for efficiently and exactly computing the partition function of over 1300 spins to give, in Boltzmann's units, S = 0.393589(6). We comment on the relation of the kagome lattice to the experimental situation in the spin-ice compound dysprosium titanium oxide.
Order-by-disorder and long-range interactions in the antiferromagnetic transverse-field Ising model on the triangular lattice -- A perturbative point of view
We report on high-resolution specific-heat and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnets CsMn(Br_xI_{1-x})_3 with different x. The evolution of the magnetic phase diagrams from the easy-axis system for x = 0 to the easy-plane system for x = 1 was studied in detail. The specific-heat critical exponent alpha of the almost isotropic x = 0.19 system agrees with the value predicted for a chiral Heisenberg scenario. In an applied magnetic field (B = 6 T) a crossover to a weak first-order transition is detected.
Frustrated Ising magnets host exotic excitations, such as magnetic monopoles in spin ice. The ground state (GS) in this case is characterized by an extensive degeneracy and associated residual entropy going back to the pioneering work by G. Wannier who established large residual entropy of nearly 50%Rln2 per mole spins in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet (TIAF) already in 1950. Here, we endeavor to verify this result experimentally using TmMgGaO4, a novel rare-earth-based frustrated antiferromagnet with Ising spins arranged on a perfect triangular lattice. Contrary to theoretical expectation…
Near the transverse-field induced quantum critical point of the Ising chain, an exotic dynamic spectrum consisting of exactly eight particles was predicted, which is uniquely described by an emergent quantum integrable field theory with the symmetry of the $E_8$ Lie algebra, but rarely explored experimentally. Here we use high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy to resolve quantum spin dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ in an applied transverse field. By comparing to an analytical calculation of the dynamical spin correlations, we identify $E_8$ partic…
Motivated by dipolar-coupled artificial spin systems, we present a theoretical study of the classical $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Ising antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. We establish the ground-state phase diagram of this model for $J_1 > |J_2|, |J_3|$ based on exact results for the ground-state energies. When all the couplings are antiferromagnetic, the model has three macroscopically degenerate ground-state phases, and using tensor networks, we can calculate the entropies of these phases and of their boundaries very accurately. In two cases, the entropy appears to be a fraction of that of the triangu…
It is known that there is no phase transition down to zero temperature in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on spatially anisotropic triangular lattices, in which the exchange coupling of one direction is stronger than those of other two directions. In the model, the low-temperature physics is governed by domain-wall excitations (defects) residing on bonds of the strong-coupling direction. In this letter, we show that an additional small attractive interaction between defects (a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the weak-coupling direction) leads to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Th…
We consider the problem of the doped Ising antiferromagnet on the frustrated triangular lattice in the limit where the hole kinetic energy is much smaller than the Ising exchange. For a {\it single} hole we prove a ``frustrated Nagaoka theorem'' showing that the ground state is magnetized and breaks translational symmetry, in contrast to the parent insulating state that is unmagnetized and spatially homogenous. The extension of this physics to finite dopings depends on the strength of a density-density coupling that is inevitably present - we find either phase separation of the holes, or a sup…
