This paper introduces empirical best predictors of small area bivariate parameters, like ratios of sums or sums of ratios, by assuming that the target unit-level vector follows a bivariate nested error regression model. The corresponding means squared errors are estimated by parametric bootstrap. Several simulation experiments empirically study the behavior of the introduced statistical methodology. An application to real data from the Spanish household budget survey gives estimators of ratios of food household expenditures by provinces.
The spectral measure plays a key role in the statistical modeling of multivariate extremes. Estimation of the spectral measure is a complex issue, given the need to obey a certain moment condition. We propose a Euclidean likelihood-based estimator for the spectral measure which is simple and explicitly defined, with its expression being free of Lagrange multipliers. Our estimator is shown to have the same limit distribution as the maximum empirical likelihood estimator of J. H. J. Einmahl and J. Segers, Annals of Statistics 37(5B), 2953--2989 (2009). Numerical experiments suggest an overall go…
A bivariate integer-valued autoregressive process of order 1 (BINAR(1)) with copula-joint innovations is studied. Different parameter estimation methods are analyzed and compared via Monte Carlo simulations with emphasis on estimation of the copula dependence parameter. An empirical application on defaulted and non-defaulted loan data is carried out using different combinations of copula functions and marginal distribution functions covering the cases where both marginal distributions are from the same family, as well as the case where they are from different distribution families.
Rigby & Stasinopoulos (2005) introduced generalized additive models for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS) where the response distribution is not restricted to belong to the exponential family and its parameters can be specified as functions of additive predictors that allows for several types of covariate effects (e.g., linear, non-linear, random and spatial effects). In many empirical situations, however, modeling simultaneously two or more responses conditional on some covariates can be of considerable relevance. In this article, we extend the scope of GAMLSS by introducing a bivariate copu…
This paper extends the analysis of bivariate seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) Tobit model by modeling its nonlinear dependence structure through the Clayton copula. The ability in capturing/modeling the lower tail dependence of the SUR Tobit model where some data are censored (generally, at zero point) is an additionally useful feature of the Clayton copula. We propose a modified version of the inference function for margins (IFM) method (Joe and Xu, 1996), which we refer to as MIFM method, to obtain the estimates of the marginal parameters and a better (satisfactory) estimate of the copul…
Gaussian Markov random fields (GMRFs) are extensively used in statistics to model area-based data and usually depend on several parameters in order to capture complex spatial correlations. In this context, it is important to determine the valid parameter space, namely the domain ensuring (semi) positive-definiteness of the precision matrix. Depending on the structure of the latter, this task can be challenging. While univari- ate GMRFs with block-Toeplitz precision are well studied in the literature, not much is analytically known about bivariate GMRFs. So far, only restrictive sufficient cond…
We introduce nonparametric tests of independence for bivariate circular data based on trigonometric moments. Our contributions lie in (i) proposing nonparametric tests that are locally and asymptotically optimal against bivariate cosine von Mises alternatives and (ii) extending these tests, via the empirical characteristic function, to obtain consistent tests against broader sets of alternatives, eventually being omnibus. We thus provide a collection of trigonometric-based tests of varying generality and known optimalities. The large-sample behaviours of the tests under the null and alternativ…
We introduce a multivariate multidimensional mixed-effects regression model in a finite mixture framework. We relax the usual unidimensionality assumption on the random effects multivariate distribution. Thus, we introduce a multidimensional multivariate discrete distribution for the random terms, with a possibly different number of support points in each univariate profile, allowing for a full association structure. Our approach is motivated by the analysis of economic growth. Accordingly, we define an extended version of the augmented Solow model. Indeed, we allow all model parameters, and n…
Empirical Bayes small area estimation based on the well-known Fay-Herriot model may produce unreliable estimates when outlying areas exist. Existing robust methods against outliers or model misspecification are generally inefficient when the assumed distribution is plausible. This paper proposes a simple modification of the standard empirical Bayes methods with adaptively balancing robustness and efficiency. The proposed method employs gamma-divergence instead of the marginal log-likelihood and optimizes a tuning parameter controlling robustness by pursuing the efficiency of empirical Bayes co…
A two-stage normal hierarchical model called the Fay--Herriot model and the empirical Bayes estimator are widely used to provide indirect and model-based estimates of means in small areas. However, the performance of the empirical Bayes estimator might be poor when the assumed normal distribution is misspecified. In this article, we propose a simple modification by using density power divergence and suggest a new robust empirical Bayes small area estimator. The mean squared error and estimated mean squared error of the proposed estimator are derived based on the asymptotic properties of the ro…
Random effects model can account for the lack of fitting a regression model and increase precision of estimating area-level means. However, in case that the synthetic mean provides accurate estimates, the prior distribution may inflate an estimation error. Thus it is desirable to consider the uncertain prior distribution, which is expressed as the mixture of a one-point distribution and a proper prior distribution. In this paper, we develop an empirical Bayes approach for estimating area-level means, using the uncertain prior distribution in the context of a natural exponential family, which w…
The area under a receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) is a useful tool to assess the performance of continuous-scale diagnostic tests on binary classification. In this article, we propose an empirical likelihood (EL) method to construct confidence intervals for the AUC from data collected by ranked set sampling (RSS). The proposed EL-based method enables inferences without assumptions required in existing nonparametric methods and takes advantage of the sampling efficiency of RSS. We show that for both balanced and unbalanced RSS, the EL-based point estimate is the Mann-Whitney statis…
The Italian National Institute for Statistics regularly provides estimates of unemployment indicators using data from the Labor Force Survey. However, direct estimates of unemployment incidence cannot be released for Local Labor Market Areas. These are unplanned domains defined as clusters of municipalities; many are out-of-sample areas and the majority is characterized by a small sample size, which render direct estimates inadequate. The Empirical Best Predictor represents an appropriate, model-based, alternative. However, for non-Gaussian responses, its computation and the computation of the…
The empirical Bayes estimators in mixed models are useful for small area estimation in the sense of increasing precision of prediction for small area means, and one wants to know the prediction errors of the empirical Bayes estimators based on the data. This paper is concerned with conditional prediction errors in the mixed models instead of conventional unconditional prediction errors. In the mixed models based on natural exponential families with quadratic variance functions, it is shown that the difference between the conditional and unconditional prediction errors is significant under dist…
In this paper, we consider parametric transformed Fay-Herriot models, and clarify conditions on transformations under which the estimator of the transformation is consistent. It is shown that the dual power transformation satisfies the conditions. Based on asymptotic properties for estimators of parameters, we derive a second-order approximation of the prediction error of the empirical best linear unbiased predictors (EBLUP) and obtain a second-order unbiased estimator of the prediction error. Finally, performances of the proposed procedures are investigated through simulation and empirical st…
We introduce a general hierarchical Bayesian framework that incorporates a flexible nonparametric data model specification through the use of empirical likelihood methodology, which we term semiparametric hierarchical empirical likelihood (SHEL) models. Although general dependence structures can be readily accommodated, we focus on spatial modeling, a relatively underdeveloped area in the empirical likelihood literature. Importantly, the models we develop naturally accommodate spatial association on irregular lattices and irregularly spaced point-referenced data. We illustrate our proposed fra…
A method for empirically assessing small area estimators via bootstrap-weighted k-Nearest-Neighbor artificial populations, with applications to forest inventory
The Kaplan-Meier product-limit estimator is a simple and powerful tool in time to event analysis. An extension exists for populations stratified into cohorts where a population survival curve is generated by weighted averaging of cohort-level survival curves. For making population-level comparisons using this statistic, we analyze the statistics of the area between two such weighted survival curves. We derive the large sample behavior of this statistic based on an empirical process of product-limit estimators. This estimator was used by an interdisciplinary NIH-SSA team in the identification o…
Changes in the number of publications in a certain field might reflect the dynamic of scientific progress in this field, since an increase in the number of publications can be interpreted as an increase in the field-specific knowledge. In this paper, we present a methodological approach to analyse the dynamics of science on lower aggregation levels, i.e., the level of research fields. Our trend analysis approach is able to uncover very recent trends, and the methods used to study the trends are simple to understand for the possible recipients of the results. In order to demonstrate the trend a…
