Although there is no doubt that multi-parameter persistent homology is a useful tool to analyse multi-variate data, efficient ways to compute these modules are still lacking in the available topological data analysis toolboxes. Other issues such as interpretation and visualization of the output remain difficult to solve. Software visualizing multi-parameter persistence diagrams is currently only available for 2-dimensional persistence modules. One of the simplest invariants for a multi-parameter persistence module is its rank invariant, defined as the function that counts the number of linearly independent homology classes that live in the filtration through a given pair of values of the multi-parameter. We propose a step towards interpretation and visualization of the rank invariant for persistence modules for any given number of parameters. We show how discrete Morse theory may be used to compute the rank invariant, proving that it is completely determined by its values at points whose coordinates are critical with respect to a discrete Morse gradient vector field. These critical points partition the set of all lines of positive slope in the parameter space into equivalence classes, such that the rank invariant along lines in the same class are also equivalent. We show that we can deduce all persistence diagrams of the restrictions to the lines in a given class from the persistence diagram of the restriction to a representative in that class.
We introduce a theoretical and computational framework to use discrete Morse theory as an efficient preprocessing in order to compute zigzag persistent homology. From a zigzag filtration of complexes $(K_i)$, we introduce a zigzag Morse filtration whose complexes $(A_i)$ are Morse reductions of the original complexes $(K_i)$, and we prove that they both have same persistent homology. This zigzag Morse filtration generalizes the filtered Morse complex of Mischaikow and Nanda, defined for standard persistence. The maps in the zigzag Morse filtration are forward and backward inclusions, as is sta…
In this note we recall the relations between the barcodes in level and sub-level persistence and make precise their relation with the Morse-Novikov complex of a Morse real- or angle-valued map. The results in this papers are implicit in my previous work(w.collaborators), but apparently not well known even to experts.
In this paper, we define the homological Morse numbers of a filtered cell complex in terms of relative homology of nested filtration pieces, and derive inequalities relating these numbers to the Betti tables of the multi-parameter persistence modules of the considered filtration. Using the Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence we first obtain strong and weak Morse inequalities involving the above quantities, and then we improve the weak inequalities achieving a sharp lower bound for homological Morse numbers. Furthermore, we prove a sharp upper bound for homological Morse numbers, expressed again i…
Multivector fields provide an avenue for studying continuous dynamical systems in a combinatorial framework. There are currently two approaches in the literature which use persistent homology to capture changes in combinatorial dynamical systems. The first captures changes in the Conley index, while the second captures changes in the Morse decomposition. However, such approaches have limitations. The former approach only describes how the Conley index changes across a selected isolated invariant set though the dynamics can be much more complicated than the behavior of a single isolated invaria…
We introduce a new notion of equivalence of discrete Morse functions on graphs called persistence equivalence. Two functions are considered persistence equivalent if and only if they induce the same persistence diagram. We compare this notion of equivalence to other notions of equivalent discrete Morse functions. We then compute an upper bound for the number of persistence equivalent discrete Morse functions on a fixed graph and show that this upper bound is sharp in the case where our graph is a tree. This is a version of the "realization problem" of the persistence map. We conclude with an e…
We introduce a new notion of persistence modules endowed with operators. It encapsulates the additional structure on Floer-type persistence modules coming from the intersection product with classes in the ambient (quantum) homology, along with a few other geometric situations. We provide sample applications to the $C^0$-geometry of Morse functions and to Hofer's geometry of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, that go beyond spectral invariants and traditional persistent homology.
We consider different notions of equivalence for Morse functions on the sphere in the context of persistent homology, and introduce new invariants to study these equivalence classes. These new invariants are as simple, but more discerning than existing topological invariants, such as persistence barcodes and Reeb graphs. We give a method to relate any two Morse--Smale vector fields on the sphere by a sequence of fundamental moves by considering graph-equivalent Morse functions. We also explore the combinatorially rich world of height-equivalent Morse functions, considered as height functions o…
We define a class of multiparameter persistence modules that arise from a one-parameter family of functions on a topological space and prove that these persistence modules are stable. We show that this construction can produce indecomposable persistence modules with arbitrarily large dimension. In the case of smooth functions on a compact manifold, we apply cobordism theory and Cerf theory to study the resulting persistence modules. We give examples in which we obtain a complete description of the persistence module as a direct sum of indecomposable summands and provide a corresponding visuali…
We investigate combinatorial dynamical systems on simplicial complexes considered as {\em finite topological spaces}. Such systems arise in a natural way from sampling dynamics and may be used to reconstruct some features of the dynamics directly from the sample. We study the homological persistence of {\em Morse decompositions} of such systems, an important descriptor of the dynamics, as a tool for validating the reconstruction. Our framework can be viewed as a step toward extending the classical persistence theory to "vector cloud" data. We present experimental results on two numerical examp…
In this paper we examine the use of topological methods for multivariate statistics. Using persistent homology from computational algebraic topology, a random sample is used to construct estimators of persistent homology. This estimation procedure can then be evaluated using the bottleneck distance between the estimated persistent homology and the true persistent homology. The connection to statistics comes from the fact that when viewed as a nonparametric regression problem, the bottleneck distance is bounded by the sup-norm loss. Consequently, a sharp asymptotic minimax bound is determined u…
The goal of this note is to define biparametric persistence diagrams for smooth generic mappings $h=(f,g):M\to V\cong \mathbb{R}^2$ for smooth compact manifold $M$. Existing approaches to multivariate persistence are mostly centered on the workaround of absence of reasonable algebraic theories for quiver representations for lattices of rank 2 or higher, or similar artificial obstacles. We approach the problem from the Whitney theory perspective, similar to how single parameter persistence can be viewed through the lens of Morse theory.
We characterize the class of persistence modules indexed over $\mathbb{R}^2$ that are decomposable into summands whose support have the shape of a {\em block}---i.e. a horizontal band, a vertical band, an upper-right quadrant, or a lower-left quadrant. Assuming the modules are pointwise finite dimensional (pfd), we show that they are decomposable into block summands if and only if they satisfy a certain local property called {\em exactness}. Our proof follows the same scheme as the proof of decomposition for pfd persistence modules indexed over $\mathbb{R}$, yet it departs from it at key stage…
Given a finite set in a metric space, the topological analysis generalizes hierarchical clustering using a 1-parameter family of homology groups to quantify connectivity in all dimensions. The connectivity is compactly described by the persistence diagram. One limitation of the current framework is the reliance on metric distances, whereas in many practical applications objects are compared by non-metric dissimilarity measures. Examples are the Kullback-Leibler divergence, which is commonly used for comparing text and images, and the Itakura-Saito divergence, popular for speech and sound. Thes…
Topological data analysis (TDA) is a rapidly developing collection of methods for studying the shape of point cloud and other data types. One popular approach, designed to be robust to noise and outliers, is to first use a smoothing function to convert the point cloud into a manifold and then apply persistent homology to a Morse filtration. A significant challenge is that this smoothing process involves the choice of a parameter and persistent homology is highly sensitive to that choice; moreover, important scale information is lost. We propose a novel topological summary plot, called a persis…
The topology and geometry of random fields - in terms of the Euler characteristic and the Minkowski functionals - has received a lot of attention in the context of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), as the detection of primordial non-Gaussianities would form a valuable clue on the physics of the early Universe. The virtue of both the Euler characteristic and the Minkowski functionals in general, lies in the fact that there exist closed form expressions for their expectation values for Gaussian random fields. However, the Euler characteristic and Minkowski functionals are summarizing charac…
We introduce a multiscale topological description of the Megaparsec weblike cosmic matter distribution. Betti numbers and topological persistence offer a powerful means of describing the rich connectivity structure of the cosmic web and of its multiscale arrangement of matter and galaxies. Emanating from algebraic topology and Morse theory, Betti numbers and persistence diagrams represent an extension and deepening of the cosmologically familiar topological genus measure, and the related geometric Minkowski functionals. In addition to a description of the mathematical background, this study pr…
In this paper we introduce the persistent magnitude, a new numerical invariant of (sufficiently nice) graded persistence modules. It is a weighted and signed count of the bars of the persistence module, in which a bar of the form $[a,b)$ in degree $d$ is counted with weight $(e^{-a}-e^{-b})$ and sign $(-1)^d$. Persistent magnitude has good formal properties, such as additivity with respect to exact sequences and compatibility with tensor products, and has interpretations in terms of both the associated graded functor, and the Laplace transform. Our definition is inspired by Otter's notion of b…
