Symbolic control is an abstraction-based controller synthesis approach that provides, algorithmically, certifiable-by-construction controllers for cyber-physical systems. Symbolic control approaches usually assume that full-state information is available which is not suitable for many real-world applications with partially-observable states or output information. This article introduces a framework for output-feedback symbolic control. We propose relations between original systems and their symbolic models based on outputs. They enable designing symbolic controllers and refining them to enforce complex requirements on original systems. We provide example methodologies to synthesize and refine output-feedback symbolic controllers.
This paper studies the construction of symbolic abstractions for nonlinear control systems via feedback refinement relation. Both the delay-free and time-delay cases are addressed. For the delay-free case, to reduce the computational complexity, we propose a new approximation approach for the state and input sets based on a static quantizer, and then a novel symbolic model is constructed such that the original system and the symbolic model satisfy the feedback refinement relation. For the time-delay case, both static and dynamic quantizers are combined to approximate the state and input sets. …
In this manuscript, we investigate symbolic abstractions that capture the behavior of piecewise-affine systems under input constraints and bounded external noise. This is accomplished by considering local affine feedback controllers that are jointly designed with the symbolic model, which ensures that an alternating simulation relation between the system and the abstraction holds. The resulting symbolic system is called a state-feedback abstraction and we show that it can be deterministic even when the original piecewise-affine system is unstable and non-deterministic. One benefit of this appr…
This paper studies symbolic abstractions for nonlinear control systems using logarithmic quantization. With a logarithmic quantizer, we approximate the state and input sets, and then construct a novel discrete abstraction for nonlinear control systems. A feedback refinement relation between the constructed discrete abstraction and the original system is established. Using the constructed discrete abstraction, the safety controller synthesis problem is studied. With the discrete abstraction and the abstract specification, the existence of a safety controller is investigated, and the algorithm i…
This note studies the robust output feedback stabilization problem of multi-input multi-output invertible nonlinear systems with output-dependent multipliers. An "ideal" state feedback is first designed under certain mild assumptions. Then, a set of extended low-power high-gain observers is systematically designed, providing a complete estimation of the "ideal" feedback law. This yields a robust output feedback stabilizer such that the origin of the closed-loop system is semiglobally asymptotically stable, while improving the numerical implementation with the power of high-gain parameters up t…
This note studies the robust output feedback stabilization problem of a class of multi-input multi-output invertible nonlinear systems, for which an "ideal" state feedback based on feedback linearization can be designed under certain mild assumptions. By systematically designing a set of extended low-power high-gain observers, we show that this "ideal" linearizing feedback law can be approximately estimated, which provides a robust output feedback stabilizer such that the origin of the resulting closed-loop system is semiglobally asymptotically stable.
This survey paper deals with the stabilization of nonlinear systems by analyzing the controlling method in terms of state feedback and output feedback. A brief overview of some literature on how the feedback controller of some dynamic systems in real applications like robots can be applicable is introduced. The aim is to give a direction about the methods of how to solve the state and output feedback stabilization problems for nonlinear systems based on feedback design methods and other theorems like the Lyapunov stability theorem. The feedback controllers can be constructed to ensure the orig…
We consider abstraction-based design of output-feedback controllers for non-linear dynamical systems against specifications over state-based predicates in linear-time temporal logic (LTL). In this context, our contribution is two-fold: (I) we generalize feedback-refinement relations for abstraction-based output-feedback control to systems with arbitrary predicate and observation maps, and (II) we introduce a new algorithm for the synthesis of abstract output-feedback controllers w.r.t. LTL specifications over unobservable state-based predicates. Our abstraction-based output-feedback controller…
Robust imitation learning seeks to mimic expert controller behavior while ensuring stability, but current methods require accurate plant models. Here, robust imitation learning is addressed for stabilizing poorly modeled plants with linear dynamic output feedback. Open-loop input-output properties are used to characterize an uncertain plant, and the feedback matrix of the dynamic controller is learned while enforcing stability through the controller's open-loop QSR-dissipativity properties. The imitation learning method is applied to two systems with parametric uncertainty.
This paper provides a protocol to address the robust output feedback consensus problem for networked heterogeneous nonlinear negative-imaginary (NI) systems with free body dynamics. We extend the definition of nonlinear NI systems to allow for systems with free body motion. A new stability result is developed for the interconnection of a nonlinear NI system and a nonlinear output strictly negative-imaginary (OSNI) system. Also, a class of networked nonlinear OSNI controllers is proposed to achieve output feedback consensus for heterogeneous networked nonlinear NI systems. We show that in this …
This paper presents a new method for dynamic output feedback stabilizing controller design for decomposable systems with switching topology and delay. Our approach consists of two steps. In the first step, we model the decomposable systems with switching topology as equivalent LPV systems with a piecewise constant parameter. In the second step, we design stabilizing output feedbacks for these LPV systems in the presence of a time-varying output delay using a trajectory-based stability analysis approach. We do not impose any constraint on the delay derivative. Finally, we illustrate our approac…
We consider abstraction-based design of output-feedback controllers for dynamical systems with a finite set of inputs and outputs against specifications in linear-time temporal logic. The usual procedure for abstraction-based controller design (ABCD) first constructs a finite-state abstraction of the underlying dynamical system, and second, uses reactive synthesis techniques to compute an abstract state-feedback controller on the abstraction. In this context, our contribution is two-fold: (I) we define a suitable relation between the original system and its abstraction which characterizes the …
The stabilization of unstable nonlinear systems and tracking control are challenging engineering problems due to the encompassed nonlinearities in dynamic systems and their scale. In the past decades, numerous observer-based control designs for dynamic systems in which the nonlinearity belongs to Lipschitz functions have been proposed. However, most of them only focus on output feedback and consequently, state feedback design remains less developed. To that end, this paper is dedicated to the problem of full-state feedback controller design for discrete-time Lipschitz nonlinear systems. In add…
A robust output feedback consensus problem for networked identical nonlinear negative-imaginary (NI) systems is investigated in this paper. Output consensus is achieved by applying identical linear output strictly negative-imaginary (OSNI) controllers to all the nonlinear NI plants in positive feedback through the network topology. First, we extend the definition of nonlinear NI systems from single-input single-output (SISO) systems to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and also extend the definition of OSNI systems to nonlinear scenarios. Asymptotic stability is proved for the clos…
We consider the problem of designing a state feedback control law to achieve nonovershooting tracking for feedback linearisable multiple-input multiple-output nonlinear systems. The reference signal is assumed to be obtained from a linear exosystem. The design method adopts known methods for the nonovershooting tracking of linear systems and extends them to the output regulation of feedback linearisable nonlinear systems. The method accommodates arbitrary initial conditions and offers design choice of the tracking convergence speed.
Symbolic optimal control is a powerful method to synthesize algorithmically correct-by-design state-feedback controllers for nonlinear plants. Its solutions are (near-)optimal with respect to a given cost function. In this note, it is demonstrated how symbolic optimal control can be used to calculate controllers for an optimized routing guidance of vehicle systems in continuous state space. In fact, the capacitated vehicle routing problem and a variant of travelling salesman problem are investigated. The latter problem has a relevant application in case of loss of vehicles during mission. A go…
The distributed optimal output consensus problem for high-order multi-agent systems has been studied recently. In this paper, we further focus on the same problem for high-order multi-agent systems subject to parametric uncertainties and aim at distributed robust controllers by measurement output feedback. We first develop a dynamic compensator to estimate the expected optimal consensus point and convert the problem into several decentralized robust tracking problems. Then, by combining the integral control technique and dirty derivative observer technique, we constructively propose a distribu…

This paper provides a control protocol for the robust output feedback consensus of networked heterogeneous nonlinear negative-imaginary (NI) systems. Heterogeneous nonlinear output strictly negative-imaginary (OSNI) controllers are applied in positive feedback according to the network topology to achieve output feedback consensus. The main contribution of this paper is extending the previous studies of the robust output feedback consensus problem for networked heterogeneous linear NI systems to nonlinear NI systems. Output feedback consensus is proved by investigating the internal stability of…
This paper studies the boundary output feedback stabilization of general 1-D reaction-diffusion PDEs in the presence of a state delay in the reaction term. The control input applies through a Robin boundary condition while the system output is selected as a either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary trace. The control strategy takes the form of a finite-dimensional observer-based controller with feedback and observer gains that are computed in order to dominate the state delayed term. For any arbitrarily given value of the state delay, we show the exponential stability of the resulting closed-loop s…
In this note, a novel observer-based output feedback control approach is proposed to address the distributed optimal output consensus problem of uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems in the normal form over unbalanced directed graphs. The main challenges of the concerned problem lie in unbalanced directed graphs and nonlinearities of multi-agent systems with their agent states not available for feedback control. Based on a two-layer controller structure, a distributed optimal coordinator is first designed to convert the considered problem into a reference-tracking problem. Then a decentraliz…
This paper proposes an algorithmic method to heuristically solve the famous Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) when the salesman's path evolves in continuous state space and discrete time but with otherwise arbitrary (nonlinear) dynamics. The presented method is based on the framework of Symbolic Control. In this way, our method returns a provably correct state-feedback controller for the underlying coverage specification, which is the TSP leaving out the requirement for optimality on the route. In addition, we utilize the Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun TSP solver to heuristically optimize the cost for…
