We investigate an iterative mean value method for the inverse (and highly ill-posed) problem of solving the heat equation backwards in time. Semi-group theory is used to rewrite the solution of the inverse problem as the solution of a fixed point equation for an affine operator, with linear part satisfying special functional analytical properties. We give a convergence proof for the method and obtain convergence rates for the residual. Convergence rates for the iterates are also obtained under the so called source conditions.
A splitting scheme for backward doubly stochastic differential equations is proposed. The main idea is to decompose a backward doubly stochastic differential equation into a backward stochastic differential equation and a stochastic differential equation. The backward stochastic differential equation and the stochastic differential equation are then approximated by first order finite difference schemes, which results in a first order scheme for the backward doubly stochastic differential equation. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the convergence rate of the proposed scheme.
We introduce a time-implicit, finite-element based space-time discretization scheme for the backward stochastic heat equation, and for the forward-backward stochastic heat equation from stochastic optimal control, and prove strong rates of convergence. The fully discrete version of the forward-backward stochastic heat equation is then used within a gradient descent algorithm to approximately solve the linear-quadratic control problem for the stochastic heat equation driven by additive noise.
It is well-known that the backward heat conduction problem of recovering the temperature $u(\cdot, t)$ at a time $t\geq 0$ from the knowledge of the temperature at a later time, namely $g:= u(\cdot, τ)$ for $τ>t$, is ill-posed, in the sense that small error in $g$ can lead to large deviation in $u(\cdot, t)$. However, in the case of a time fractional backward heat conduction problem (TFBHCP), the above problem is well-posed for $t>0$ and ill-posed for $t=0$. We use this observation to obtain stable approximate solutions for the TFBHCP for $t=0$, and derive error estimates under suitable source…
In this work, in order to obtain higher-order schemes for solving forward backward stochastic differential equations, we adopt the high-order multi-step method in [W. Zhao, Y. Fu and T. Zhou, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 36(4) (2014), pp.A1731-A1751] by combining multi-steps. Two reference ordinary differential equations containing the conditional expectations and their derivatives are derived from the backward component. These derivatives are approximated by finite difference methods with multi-step combinations. The resulting scheme is a semi-discretization in the time direction involving condition…
In this work we propose a new algorithm for solving high-dimensional backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs). Based on the general theta-discretization for the time-integrands, we show how to efficiently use eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) regression to approximate the resulting conditional expectations in a quite high dimension. Numerical results illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of our proposed algorithms for solving very high-dimensional (up to $10000$ dimensions) nonlinear BSDEs.

In this paper we proposed two new quasi-boundary value methods for regularizing the ill-posed backward heat conduction problems. With a standard finite difference discretization in space and time, the obtained all-at-once nonsymmetric sparse linear systems have the desired block $ω$-circulant structure, which can be utilized to design an efficient parallel-in-time (PinT) direct solver that built upon an explicit FFT-based diagonalization of the time discretization matrix. Convergence analysis is presented to justify the optimal choice of the regularization parameter. Numerical examples are rep…
This paper addresses a backward heat conduction problem with fractional Laplacian and time-dependent coefficient in an unbounded domain. The problem models generalized diffusion processes and is well-known to be severely ill-posed. We investigate a simple and powerful variational regularization technique based on mollification. Under classical Sobolev smoothness conditions, we derive order-optimal convergence rates between the exact solution and regularized approximation in the practical case where both the data and the operator are noisy. Moreover, we propose an order-optimal a-posteriori par…

Li, Chen, Tai & E. (J. Machine Learning Research, 2018) have proposed a regularization of the forward-backward sweep iteration for solving the Pontryagin maximum principle in optimal control problems. The authors prove the global convergence of the iteration in the continuous time case. In this article we show that their proof can be extended to the case of numerical discretization by symplectic Runge-Kutta pairs. We demonstrate the convergence with a simple numerical experiment.
This paper presents a steady-state and transient heat conduction analysis framework using the polygonal scaled boundary finite element method (PSBFEM) with polygon/quadtree meshes. The PSBFEM is implemented with commercial finite element code Abaqus by the User Element Sub-routine (UEL) feature. The detailed implementation of the framework, defining the UEL element, and solving the stiffness/mass matrix by the eigenvalue decomposition are presented. Several benchmark problems from heat conduction are solved to validate the proposed implementation. Results show that the PSBFEM is reliable and a…
In this paper, we study the numerical method for solving forward-backward stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion ($G$-FBSDEs) which correspond to fully nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). First, we give an approximate conditional $G$-expectation and obtain feasible methods to calculate the distribution of $G$-Brownian motion. On this basis, some efficient numerical schemes for $G$-FBSDEs are then proposed. We rigorously analyze errors of the proposed schemes and prove the convergence results. Finally, several numerical experiments are given to demonstrate …

In this paper, we propose a stochastic version of the classical Tseng's forward-backward-forward method with inertial term for solving monotone inclusions given by the sum of a maximal monotone operator and a single-valued monotone operator in real Hilbert spaces. We obtain the almost sure convergence for the general case and the rate $\mathcal{O}(1/n)$ in expectation for the strong monotone case. Furthermore, we derive $\mathcal{O}(1/n)$ rate convergence of the primal-dual gap for saddle point problems.
