We study the effect of twisting on bilayer graphene. The effect of lattice relaxation is included; we look at the electronic structure, piezo-electric charges and spontaneous polarisation. We show that the electronic structure without lattice relaxation shows a set of extremely flat in-gap states similar to Landau-levels, where the spacing scales with twist angle. With lattice relaxation we still have flat bands, but now the spectrum becomes independent of twist angle for sufficiently small angles. We describe in detail the nature of the bands, and study appropriate continuum models, at the same time explaining the spectrum We find that even though the spectra for both parallel an anti-parallel alignment are very similar, the spontaneous polarisation effects only occur for parallel alignment. We argue that this suggests a large interlayer hopping between boron and nitrogen.
Employing graphene as a template, we fabricate moiré superlattices by stacking bilayer or folded bilayer-bilayer graphene (BLG or fBBLG) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), i.e., hBN/BLG/hBN or hBN/fBBLG/hBN stacks, with a small twist angle between the graphene and one of the two hBN layers. Because of the modulation due to the hBN, higher-generation Dirac points can emerge with a narrow bandwidth and van Hove singularities. In the moiré superlattice devices, we can therefore access the higher-generation Dirac points by in-situ gate tuning. This study is based on our previous paper (Appl. Phys.…
We study spin transport in a fully hBN encapsulated monolayer-graphene van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure, at room temperature. A top-layer of bilayer-hBN is used as a tunnel barrier for spin-injection and detection in graphene with ferromagnetic cobalt electrodes. We report surprisingly large and bias induced (differential) spin-injection (detection) polarizations up to 50% (135%) at a positive voltage bias of +0.6 V, as well as sign inverted polarizations up to -70% (-60%) at a reverse bias of -0.4 V. This demonstrates the potential of bilayer-hBN tunnel barriers for practical graphene spin…
We study the superlattice minibands produced by the interplay between moiré pattern induced by hexagonal BN substrate on graphene layer and the interlayer coupling in bilayer graphene with Bernal stacking (BLG). We compare moiré miniband features in BLG, where they are affected by the interlayer asymmetry of BLG-hBN heterostructure and trigonal warping characteristic for electrons in Bernal-stacked bilayers with those found in monolayer graphene.
We report on transport properties in dual-gated hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/bilayer-graphene (BLG) superlattices. Here, BLG is nontwisted, i.e., plain. This paper focuses on the charge neutrality point (CNP) for a plain BLG. Under a perpendicular magnetic field, transitions between two insulating phases at the CNP are detected by varying a displacement field with the study on the resistance-temperature characteristics and the magnetoresistance. This work opens avenues for exploring the global phase diagram of the hBN/BLG superlattices beyond the CNP.
We study the spin injection efficiency into single and bilayer graphene on the ferrimagnetic insulator Yttrium-Iron-Garnet (YIG) through an exfoliated tunnel barrier of bilayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The contacts of two samples yield a resistance-area product between 5 and 30 k$Ωμ$m$^2$. Depending on an applied DC bias current, the magnitude of the non-local spin signal can be increased or suppressed below the noise level. The spin injection efficiency reaches values from -60% to +25%. The results are confirmed with both spin valve and spin precession measurements. The proximity induce…
When using hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) as a substrate for graphene, the resulting moiré pattern creates secondary Dirac points. By encapsulating a multilayer graphene within aligned hBN sheets the controlled moiré stacking may offer even richer benefits. Using advanced tight-binding simulations on atomistically-relaxed heterostructures, here we show that the gap at the secondary Dirac point can be opened in selected moiré-stacking configurations, and is independent of any additional vertical gating of the heterostructure. On the other hand, gating can broadly tune the gap at the principal Di…
In this paper we discuss the optical response due to the excitonic effect of two types of hBN bilayers: AB and AA'. Understanding the properties of these bilayers is of great utility to the study of twisted bilayers at arbitrary angles, since these two configurations correspond to the limit cases of 0 and 60 degree rotation. To obtain the excitonic response we present a method to solve a four-band Bethe-Salpeter equation, by casting it into a 1D problem, thus greatly reducing the numerical burden of the calculation when compared with strictly 2D methods. We find results in good agreement with …
We investigate the magnetic minibands of a heterostructure consisting of bilayer graphene (BLG) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) by numerically diagonalizing a two-band Hamiltonian that describes electrons in BLG in the presence of a moire potential. Due to inversion-symmetry breaking characteristic for the moire potential, the valley symmetry of the spectrum is broken, but despite this, the zero-energy Landau level in BLG survives, albeit with reduced degeneracy. In addition, we derive effective models for the low-energy features in the magnetic minibands and demonstrate the appearance of se…
We theoretically investigate the electronic structures of moiré superlattices arising in monolayer / bilayer graphene stacked on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in presence and absence of magnetic field. We develop an effective continuum model from a microscopic tight-binding lattice Hamiltonian, and calculate the electronic structures of graphene-hBN systems with different rotation angles. Using the effective model, we explain the characteristic band properties such as the gap opening at the corners of the superlattice Brillouin zone (mini-Dirac point). We also investigate the energy spectrum a…
Moiré superlattices (MSL) formed in angle-aligned bilayers of van der Waals materials have become a promising platform to realize novel two-dimensional electronic states. Angle-aligned trilayer structures can form two sets of MSLs which could potentially interfere with each other. In this work, we directly image the moiré patterns in both monolayer graphene aligned on hBN and twisted bilayer graphene aligned on hBN, using combined scanning microwave impedance microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy. Correlation of the two techniques reveals the contrast mechanism for the achieved ult…
In this paper a systematic examination of graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (g/hBN) bilayers is presented, through a recently developed two-dimensional phase field crystal model that incorporates out-of-plane deformations. The system parameters are determined by closely matching the stacking energies and heights of graphene/hBN bilayers to those obtained from existing quantum-mechanical density functional theory calculations. Out-of-plane deformations are shown to reduce the energies of inversion domain boundaries in hBN, and the coupling between graphene and hBN layers leads to a bilayer defec…
The effect of an hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layer close aligned with twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is studied. At sufficiently low angles between twisted bilayer graphene and hBN, $θ_{hBN} \lesssim 2^\circ$, the graphene electronic structure is strongly disturbed. The width of the low energy peak in the density of states changes from $W \sim 5 - 10$ meV for a decoupled system to $\sim 20 - 30$ meV. Spikes in the density of states due to van Hove singularities are smoothed out. We find that for a realistic combination of the twist angle in the TBG and the twist angle between the hBN and the…
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is sometimes observed in twisted bilayer graphene (tBG) when it is nearly aligned with an encapsulating hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layer. We propose that the appearance or absence of the QAH effect in individual devices could be related to commensurability between the graphene/graphene and graphene/hBN moiré patterns. We identify a series of points in the $(θ_{\rm GG},θ_{\rm GBN})$ twist-angle space at which the two moiré patterns are commensurate, allowing moiré band theory to be applied, and show that the band Chern numbers are in this case sensitiv…
Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is the supporting substrate of choice for two-dimensional material devices because it is atomically flat and chemically inert. However, due to the small size of mechanically exfoliated hBN flakes, electronic structure studies of 2D materials supported by hBN using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) are challenging. Here we investigate the electronic band structure of a Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene sheet on a hexagonal boron nitride (BLG/hBN) flake using nanospot ARPES (nanoARPES). By fitting high-resolution energy vs. momentum electronic band spe…
Graphene superlattices have recently been attracting growing interest as an emergent class of quantum metamaterials. In this paper, we report the observation of nonlocal transport in bilayer graphene (BLG) superlattices encapsulated between two hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers, which formed hBN/BLG/hBN moiré superlattices. We then employed these superlattices to detect a long-range charge-neutral valley current using an all-electrical method. The moiré superlattice with broken inversion symmetry leads to a hot spot with Berry curvature accumulating at the charge neutral point (CNP), and it…
The recently observed unconventional ferroelectricity in AB bilayer graphene sandwiched by hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) presents a new platform to manipulate correlated phases in multilayered van der Waals heterostructures. We present a low-energy continuum model for AB bilayer graphene encapsulated by the top and bottom layers of either hBN or graphene, with two independent twist angles. For the graphene/hBN heterostructures, we show that twist angle asymmetry leads to a layer polarization of the valence and conduction bands. We also show that an out-of-plane displacement field not only tune…

Twisted bilayer graphenes with magical angle exhibit strongly correlated electronic properties because of the isolated flat band at the Fermi level. We studied the twisted bilayer graphene with substrates on both layers. The substrate induce Kekul$\acute{e}$ distortion for each graphene layer. The systems are investigated by both continuous Dirac Fermion model and tight binding model. The two investigations give similar conclusion that isolated flat band with ultra-narrow bandwidth could appear.
The relative twist angle in heterostructures of two-dimensional (2D) materials with similar lattice constants result in a dramatic alteration of the electronic properties. Here, we investigate the electrical and magnetotransport properties in bilayer graphene (BLG) encapsulated between two hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) crystals, where the top and bottom hBN are rotationally aligned with bilayer graphene with a twist angle $θ_t\sim 0^{\circ} \text{and}~ θ_b < 1^{\circ}$, respectively. This results in the formation of two moiré superlattices, with the appearance of satellite resistivity peaks at…
We show that the twisted graphene bilayer can reveal unusual topological properties at low energies, as a consequence of a Dirac-point splitting. These features rely on a symmetry analysis of the electron hopping between the two layers of graphene and we derive a simplified effective low-energy Hamiltonian which captures the essential topological properties of twisted bilayer graphene. The corresponding Landau levels peculiarly reveal a degenerate zero-energy mode which cannot be lifted by strong magnetic fields.
We study the edge states of twisted bilayer graphene and their topological origin. We show that the twisted bilayer graphene has special edge states associated with the moiré pattern, and the emergence of these moiré edge states is linked with the sliding Chern number, which describes topological charge pumping caused by relative interlayer sliding. When one layer of the twisted bilayer is relatively slid with respect to the other layer, the edge states are transferred from a single band to another across the band gap, and the number of the edge states pumped in a sliding cycle is shown to be …
We introduce a minimum tight-binding model with only three parameters extracted from graphene and untwisted bilayer graphene. This model reproduces quantitatively the electronic structure of not only these two systems and bulk graphite near the Fermi level, but also that of twisted bilayer graphene including the value of the magic angle, at which bands at $E_F$ flatten without overlap and two gaps open, one above and one below $E_F$. The Hamiltonian is sufficiently transparent and flexible to be adopted to other twisted layered systems.
Twisted bilayer graphene with tiny rotation angles have drawn significant attention due to the observation of the unconventional superconducting and correlated insulating behaviors. In this paper, we employ a full tight-binding model to investigate collective excitations in twisted bilayer graphene near magic angle. The polarization function is obtained from the tight-binding propagation method without diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix. With the atomic relaxation considered in the simulation, damped and undamped interband plasmon modes are discovered near magic angle under both room te…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of high-quality chemical vapor-deposited (CVD) bilayer graphene (BLG). In particular, we demonstrate that CVD-grown BLG can mechanically be detached from the copper foil by an hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) crystal after oxidation of the copper-to-BLG interface. Confocal Raman spectroscopy reveals an AB-stacking order of the BLG crystals and a high structural quality. From transport measurements on fully encapsulated hBN/BLG/hBN Hall bar devices we extract charge carrier mobilities up to 180,000 cm$^2$/(Vs) at 2 K and up to 40,000 cm$^2$/(Vs) at…
Angle disorder is an intrinsic feature of twisted bilayer graphene and other moiré materials. Here, we discuss electron transport in twisted bilayer graphene in the presence of angle disorder. We compute the local density of states and the Landauer-Büttiker transmission through an angle disorder barrier of width comparable to the moiré period, using a decimation technique based on a real space description. We find that barriers which separate regions where the width of the bands differ by 50% or more lead to a minor suppression of the transmission, and that the transmission is close to one for…
Twisted bilayer graphene provides a new two-dimensional platform for studying electron interaction phenomena and flat band properties such as correlated insulator transition, superconductivity and ferromagnetism at certain magic angles. Here, we present strong evidence of correlated insulator states and superconductivity signatures in p-type twisted double-bilayer WSe$_2$. Enhanced interlayer interactions are observed when the twist angle decreases to a few degrees as reflected by the high-order satellites in the electron diffraction patterns taken from the 2H/3R-stacked domains reconstructed …
Theory predicts that the application of an electric field breaks the inversion symmetry of AB and BA stacked domains in twisted bilayer graphene, resulting in the formation of a triangular network of one-dimensional valley-protected helical states. This two-dimensional network of one-dimensional states has been observed in several studies, but direct experimental evidence that the electronic transport in these one-dimensional states is valley-protected is still lacking. In this study, we report the existence of the network in small-angle twisted bilayer graphene at room temperature. Moreover, …
We numerically calculate the optical conductivity of twisted graphene bilayers within the continuum model. To obtain the imaginary part, we employ the regularized Kramers-Kronig relation allowing us to discuss arbitrary twist angles, chemical potential and temperature. We find that the Drude weight $D$ as function of the chemical potential $μ$ closely follows the shell structure of twisted bilayer displayed by the density of states. For certain angles, this results in a transport gap D=0 at finite $μ$. We also discuss the loss function which, for low doping, is characterized by acoustic interb…
We apply a multiscale modeling approach to study lattice reconstruction in marginally twisted bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). For this, we develop DFT-parametrized interpolation formulae for interlayer adhesion energies of MoSe$_2$, WSe$_2$, MoS$_2$, and WS$_2$, combine those with elasticity theory, and analyze the bilayer lattice relaxation into mesoscale domain structures. Paying particular attention to the inversion asymmetry of TMD monolayers, we show that 3R and 2H stacking domains, separated by a network of dislocations develop for twist angles $θ^{\circ}<θ^{\circ}_P\…
Incommensurately twisted graphene bilayers are described by long-wavelength theories, but to date such theories exist only at small angles of interlayer rotation. We construct a long wavelength theory without such a restriction, instead requiring nearness to commensuration. The theory inherits its energy scale from the exactly commensurate bilayer that it is close to. It is a spatial interpolation between the low-energy theories of commensurate structures with the two possible sublattice exchange (SE) symmetries: SE even and SE odd. In addition to generalizing existing theories, our theory bri…
We report that two rotated layers of blue phosphorene behave as a direct band gap semiconductor. The optical spectrum shows absorption peaks in the visible region of the spectrum and in addition the energy of these peaks can be tuned with the rotational angle. These findings makes twisted bilayer blue phosphorene a strong candidate as a solar cell or photodetection device. Our results are based on ab initio calculations of several rotated blue phosphorene layers.

Recently, the twist angle between adjacent sheets of stacked van der Waals materials emerged as a new knob to engineer correlated states of matter in two-dimensional heterostructures in a controlled manner, giving rise to emergent phenomena such as superconductivity or correlated insulating states. Here,we use an ab initio based approach to characterize the electronic properties of twisted bilayer MoS2. We report that, in marked contrast to twisted bilayer graphene, slightly hole-doped MoS2 realizes a strongly asymmetric px-py Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice, with two almost entirely di…
We show that a sliding motion between the two layers of a \moire superlattice induces an electric current and realizes a two-dimensional version of the topological Thouless pump when the Fermi energy lies in one of the minigaps. Interestingly, a chiral charge pump, namely, a transverse current induced by the sliding motion, is possible in twisted homobilayers. This result is confirmed by a concrete calculation of the adiabatic current in twisted bilayer graphene. Our work reveals an interesting link between mechanical motion and electricity unique to \moire superlattices, and may find applicat…
We study the transport properties of a twisted bilayer graphene flake contacted by two monolayer nanoribbons which act as leads. We analyze the conductance in terms of the spectra of the bilayer nanoribbon and the monolayer contacts. The low-energy transport properties are governed by the edge states with AB stacking. Remarkably, the electronic conductance in this energy region does not depend much on the relative position of the leads, in contrast with that of bilayer flakes with more symmetric stackings. We attribute this feature to the localization of these low-energy states in the AB edge …
Selection rules and interference effects in angle resolved photoemission spectra from twisted graphene bilayers are studied within a long wavelength theory for the electronic structure. Using a generic model for the interlayer coupling, we identify features in the calculated ARPES momentum distributions that are controlled by the singularities and topological character of its long wavelength spectrum. We distinguish spectral features that are controlled by single-layer singularities in the spectrum, their modification by gauge potentials in each layer generated by the interlayer coupling, and …
We identify a mapping between two-dimensional (2D) electron transport in a minimally twisted graphene bilayer and a 1D quantum walk, where one spatial dimension plays the role of time. In this mapping a magnetic field B perpendicular to the bilayer maps onto an electric field. Bloch oscillations due to the periodic motion in a 1D Bloch band can then be observed in purely DC transport as magnetoconductance oscillations with periodicity set by the Bloch frequency.
A new implementation of stochastic many-body perturbation theory for periodic 2D systems is presented. The method is used to compute quasiparticle excitations in twisted bilayer phosphorene. Excitation energies are studied using stochastic $G_0W_0$ and partially self-consistent $\bar ΔGW_0$ approaches. The approach is inexpensive; it is used to study twisted systems with unit cells containing $>2,700$ atoms ($>13,500$ valence electrons), which corresponds to a minimum twisting angle of $\approx 3.1^\circ$. Twisted bilayers exhibit band splitting, increased localization and formation of localiz…
The electric structure of twisted bilayer GeSe, which shows a rectangular moiré pattern, is analyzed using a $\bm{k}\cdot\bm{p}$ type effective continuum model. The effective model is constructed on the basis of the the local approximation method, where the local lattice structure of a twisted bilayer system is approximated by its untwisted bilayer with parallel displacement, and the required parameters are fixed with the help of the first-principles method. By inspecting the twist angle dependence of the physical properties, we reveal a relation between the effective potential under moiré pat…
