The pattern speed with which galactic bars rotate is intimately linked to the amount of dark matter in the inner regions of their host galaxies. In particular, dark matter haloes act to slow down bars via torques exerted through dynamical friction. Observational studies of barred galaxies tend to find that bars rotate fast, while hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of galaxy formation and evolution in the $Λ$CDM framework have previously found that bars slow down excessively. This has led to a growing tension between fast bars and the $Λ$CDM cosmological paradigm. In this study we revisit this issue, using the Auriga suite of high resolution, magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxy formation and evolution in the $Λ$CDM framework, finding that bars remain fast down to $z=0$. In Auriga, bars form in galaxies that have higher stellar-to-dark matter ratios and are more baryon-dominated than in previous cosmological simulations; this suggests that in order for bars to remain fast, massive spiral galaxies must lie above the commonly used abundance matching relation. While this reduces the aforementioned tension between the rotation speed of bars and $Λ$CDM, it accentuates the recently reported discrepancy between the dynamically inferred stellar-to-dark matter ratios of massive spirals and those inferred from abundance matching. Our results highlight the potential of using bar dynamics to constrain models of galaxy formation and evolution.
The high luminosity displayed by an active galactic nucleus (AGN) requires that gas be transported to the centre of the galaxy by some mechanism. Bar-driven processes are often pointed out in this context and a number of studies have addressed the bar-AGN connection, but with conflicting results. Some of the inconsistencies can be explained by the different spatial- and timescales involved in bar-driven gas inflows, accretion by the central black hole, and AGN emission. However, the discrepant results could also be due to sample biases, because both the AGN activity determination and the bar d…

More than 50 per cent of present-day massive disc galaxies show a rotating stellar bar. Their formation and dynamics have been widely studied both numerically and observationally. Although numerical simulations in the $Λ$CDM cosmological framework predict the formation of such stellar components, there seems to be a tension between theoretical and observational results. Simulated bars are typically larger in size and have slower pattern speed than observed ones. We study the formation and evolution of barred galaxies, using two $Λ$CDM zoom-in hydrodynamical simulations of the CLUES project tha…
We study the shape and kinematics of simulated dwarf galaxy discs in the APOSTLE suite of $Λ$CDM cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We find that a large fraction of these gas-rich, star-forming discs show weak bars in their stellar component, despite being dark matter-dominated systems. The bar pattern shape and orientation reflect the ellipticity of the dark matter potential, and its rotation is locked to the slow figure rotation of the triaxial dark halo. The bar-like nature of the potential induces non-circular motions in the gas component, including strong bisymmetric flows that can …
In this work we analyse the structural and photometric properties of 21 barred simulated galaxies from the Auriga Project. These consist of Milky Way-mass magneto-hydrodynamical simulations in a $Λ$CDM cosmological context. In order to compare with observations, we generate synthetic SDSS-like broad-band images from the numerical data at z = 0 with different inclinations (from face-on to edge-on). Ellipse fits are used to determine the bar lengths, and 2D bulge/disc/bar decompositions with galfit are also performed, modelling the bar component with the modified Ferrer profile. We find a wide r…
The dynamic evolution of galactic bars in standard $Λ$CDM models is dominated by angular momentum loss to the dark matter haloes via dynamical friction. Traditional approximations to dynamical friction are formulated using the linearized collisionless Boltzmann equation and have been shown to be valid in the fast limit, i.e. for rapidly slowing bars. However, the linear assumption breaks down within a few dynamical periods for typical slowly evolving bars, which trap a significant amount of disc stars and dark matter in resonances. Recent observations of the Galactic bar imply this slow regime…
Bose-Einstein-condensed dark matter, also called scalar-field dark matter (SFDM), has become a popular alternative to cold dark matter (CDM), because it predicts galactic cores, in contrast to the cusps of CDM halos ("cusp-core problem"). We continue the study of SFDM with a strong, repulsive self-interaction; the Thomas-Fermi regime of SFDM (SFDM-TF). In this model, structure formation is suppressed below a scale related to the TF radius $R_\text{TF}$, which is close to the radius of central cores in these halos. We investigate for the first time the impact of baryons onto realistic galactic …
The dark matter halos in $Λ$CDM cosmological simulations are triaxial and highly flattened. In many cases, these triaxial equilibria are also tumbling slowly, typically about their short axes, with periods of order a Hubble time. Halos may therefore exert a slowly changing external torque on spiral galaxies that can affect their dynamical evolution in interesting ways. We examine the effect of the external torques exerted by a tumbling quadrupolar tidal field on the evolution of spiral galaxies using N-body simulations with realistic, disk galaxy models. We measure the amplitude of the externa…
We present a realistic modeling of the dipole component of the projected sky distribution of NVSS radio galaxies. The modeling relies on mock catalogs generated within the context of $Λ$CDM cosmology, in the linear regime of structure formation. After removing the contribution from the solar motion, the mocks show that the remaining observed signal is mostly (70\%) due to structures within $z\lesssim0.1$. The amplitude of the model signal depends on the bias factor $b$ of the NVSS mock galaxies. For sources with flux density, $ S> 15 \; \rm mJy$, the bias recipe inferred from higher order mome…
The stellar velocity ellipsoid (SVE) in galaxies can provide important information on the processes that participate in the dynamical heating of their disc components (e.g. giant molecular clouds, mergers, spiral density waves, bars). Earlier findings suggested a strong relation between the shape of the disc SVE and Hubble type, with later-type galaxies displaying more anisotropic ellipsoids and early-types being more isotropic. In this paper, we revisit the strength of this relation using an exhaustive compilation of observational results from the literature on this issue. We find no clear co…
Astronomical observations reveal a major deficiency in our understanding of physics $-$ the detectable mass is insufficient to explain the observed motions in a huge variety of systems given our current understanding of gravity, Einstein's General theory of Relativity (GR). This missing gravity problem may indicate a breakdown of GR at low accelerations, as postulated by Milgromian dynamics (MOND). We review the MOND theory and its consequences, including in a cosmological context where we advocate a hybrid approach involving light sterile neutrinos to address MOND's cluster-scale issues. We t…
Here we utilise recent measures of galaxy total dynamical mass and X-ray gas luminosities (L$_{X,Gas}$) for a sample of 29 massive early-type galaxies from the SLUGGS survey to probe L$_{X,Gas}$--mass scaling relations. In particular, we investigate scalings with stellar mass, dynamical mass within 5 effective radii (R$_e$) and total virial mass. We also compare these relations with predictions from $Λ$CDM simulations. We find a strong linear relationship between L$_{X,Gas}$ and galaxy dynamical mass within 5 R$_e$, which is consistent with the recent cosmological simulations of Choi et al. th…
Recent cosmological hydrodynamical simulations suggest that integral field spectroscopy can connect the high-order stellar kinematic moments h3 (~skewness) and h4 (~kurtosis) in galaxies to their cosmological assembly history. Here, we assess these results by measuring the stellar kinematics on a sample of 315 galaxies, without a morphological selection, using 2D integral field data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. A proxy for the spin parameter ($λ_{R_e}$) and ellipticity ($ε_e$) are used to separate fast and slow rotators; there exists a good correspondence to regular and non-regular rotators, r…
Scalar Field Dark Matter (SFDM) comprised of ultralight ($\gtrsim 10^{-22}$ eV) bosons is an alternative to standard, collisionless Cold Dark Matter (CDM) that is CDM-like on large scales but inhibits small-scale structure formation. As a Bose-Einstein condensate, its free-field ("fuzzy") limit (FDM) suppresses structure below the de Broglie wavelength, $λ_\text{deB}$, creating virialized haloes with central cores of radius $\simλ_\text{deB}$, surrounded by CDM-like envelopes, and a halo mass function (HMF) with a sharp cut-off on small scales. With a strong enough repulsive self-interaction (…
The formation of galaxies and their various components can be stringent tests of dark matter models and of gravity theories. In the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model, spheroids are formed through mergers in a strongly hierarchical scenario, and also in the early universe through dynamical friction in clumpy galaxies. More secularly, pseudo-bulges are formed by the inner vertical resonance with bars. The high efficiency of bulge formation is in tension with observations in the local universe of a large amount of bulge-less spiral galaxies. In the present work, the formation of bulges in ver…
We compile an updated list of 38 measurements of the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ between redshifts $0.07 \leq z \leq 2.36$ and use them to place constraints on model parameters of constant and time-varying dark energy cosmological models, both spatially flat and curved. We use five models to measure the redshift of the cosmological deceleration-acceleration transition, $z_{\rm da}$, from these $H(z)$ data. Within the error bars, the measured $z_{\rm da}$ are insensitive to the model used, depending only on the value assumed for the Hubble constant $H_0$. The weighted mean of our measurements is $z…
We focus on exploring the metal enrichment of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in Cold and Warm (1.5 and 3 keV) Dark Matter (DM) cosmologies, and the constraints this yields on the DM particle mass, using a semi-analytic model, Delphi, that jointly tracks the Dark Matter and baryonic assembly of galaxies at $z \simeq 4-20$ including both Supernova and (a range of) reionization feedback (models). We find that while ${\rm M_{UV}} \geq -15$ galaxies contribute half of all IGM metals in the Cold Dark Matter model by $z \simeq 4.5$, given the suppression of low-mass halos, larger halos with ${\rm M_{…
The cold dark matter (CDM) scenario predicts that galactic halos should host a huge amount of subhalos possibly lighter than planets, depending on the nature of dark matter. Predicting their abundance and distribution has important implications for dark matter searches and searches for subhalos themselves, as they could provide a decisive test of the CDM paradigm. A major difficulty in subhalo population model building is to account for the gravitational stripping induced by baryons, which strongly impact on the overall dynamics inside galaxies. In this paper, we focus on these "baryonic" tide…
