The minimal standard model of quarks and leptons is extended with a set of vectorlike fermions to allow baryon number $B$ to become a gauged $U(1)_B$ symmetry. The $B$ assignments of the new particles are determined by renormalizable interactions with the known quarks through a color triplet scalar diquark. The spontaneous breaking of $U(1)_B$ by a scalar with $B=3$ results in a conserved residual global $B$ symmetry. A singlet neutral scalar with $B=2$ is a possible long-lived dark-matter candidate.
We consider the inclusion of TeV-scale, fermionic dark matter in an asymptotically safe model of gauged baryon number that has been recently proposed [Phys. Rev. D 106, no. 3, 035015 (2022)]. The new gauge boson serves as a portal between the dark and the visible sectors. The range of the baryon number gauge coupling and the kinetic mixing between baryon number and hypercharge are constrained by the requirement that nontrivial ultraviolet fixed points are reached. We show that this asymptotically safe dark matter model can achieve the correct dark matter relic density while remaining consisten…
Vertex operators for photo- and electro-production of baryon states with arbitrary spin-parity, $ γ+ N\to B(J^P)$, are constructed. The operators obey gauge invariance and analyticity constraints. Analyticity is realized as a requirement of the generalized Siegert theorem for vertex form factors.
A scenario for the generation of the baryon asymmetry in the early Universe is proposed in which cosmic string loops, predicted by theories where the baryon and/or lepton numbers are gauged symmetries, collapse during the friction dominated period of string evolution. This provides a mechanism for the departure from thermal equilibrium necessary to have a nonvanishing baryon asymmetry. Examples of models are given where this idea can be implemented. In particular, the model with the gauge symmetry $SU(3)_{c}\otimes SU(2)_{L}\otimes U(1)_{Y}\otimes U(1)_{B} \otimes U(1)_{L}$ has the interesting…
In unification models based on SU(15) or SU(16), baryon number is part of the gauge symmetry, broken spontaneously. In such models, we discuss various scenarios of important baryon number violating processes like proton decay and neutron-antineutron oscillation. Our analysis depends on the effective operator method, and covers many variations of symmetry breaking, including different intermediate groups and different Higgs boson content. We discuss processes mediated by gauge bosons and Higgs bosons parallely. We show how accidental global or discrete symmetries present in the full gauge invar…
We discuss the effective action for QCD gauge fields at finite temperatures and densities, obtained after integrating out the hardest momentum scales from the system. We show that a non-vanishing baryon density induces a charge conjugation (C) odd operator to the gauge field action, proportional to the chemical potential. Even though it is parametrically smaller than the leading C even operator, it could have an important effect on C odd observables. The same operator appears to be produced by classical kinetic theory, allowing in principle for a non-perturbative study of such processes.
We investigate the Q-ball decay into the axino dark matter in the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. In our scenario, the Q ball decays mainly into nucleons and partially into axinos to account respectively for the baryon asymmetry and the dark matter of the universe. The Q ball decays well before the big bang nucleosynthesis so that it is not affected by the decay. We show the region of the parameters which realizes this scenario.
Baryon number (B) is automatically conserved in the standard SU(2) X U(1) electroweak gauge model, but not in its supersymmetric extension where it must be imposed as an extra condition. This undesirable feature is avoided in the conventional left-right supersymmetric extension, but then flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC) are not naturally suppressed. A new version is proposed with automatic B conservation as well as FCNC suppression (except for u quarks through scalar exchange).
A simple extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in which baryon and lepton numbers are local gauge symmetries spontaneously broken at the supersymmetry scale is reported. This theory provides a natural explanation for proton stability. Despite violating R-parity, it contains a dark matter candidate carrying baryon number that can be searched for in direct detection experiments. The model accommodates a light active neutrino spectrum and predicts one heavy and two light sterile neutrinos. It also allows for lepton number violating processes testable at the Large Hadron Collider.
In an extension of the standard model where baryon number and lepton number are local gauge symmetries, we analyze the effect of corrections from exotic fermions and scalars on the oblique parameters $S,\;T,\;U$. Because a light neutral Higgs $h_0$ with mass around $124-126{\rm GeV}$ strongly constrains the corresponding parameter space of this model, we also investigate the gluon fusion process $gg\rightarrow h_0$ and two photon decay of lightest neutral Higgs $h_0\rightarrowγγ$ at the Large Hadron Collider.
An introduction to the subject of baryon number non-conservation in the electroweak theory at high temperatures or energies is followed by a summary of our discovery of an infinite surface of sphaleron-like configurations which play a key role in baryon-number non-conserving transitions in a hot electroweak plasma.
We comment on a statement made in arXiv:1107.0403, which implies that the model of gravitino dark matter from Q-ball decay we presented in arXiv:1101.5328 is generally ruled out by the effect of NLSP decay on BBN. We explain why this statement is incorrect.
Assuming that the Yukawa couplings between the Higgs and exotic quarks cannot be ignored, we analyze the signals of decay channels $h\rightarrowγγ$ and $h\rightarrow VV^*\;(V=Z,\;W)$ with the Higgs mass around $125\;{\rm GeV}$ in a supersymmetric extension of the standard model where baryon and lepton numbers are local gauge symmetries. Adopting some assumptions on relevant parameter space, we can account for the experimental data on Higgs from ATLAS and CMS naturally.
We recently showed that a new gauge boson $γ_B$ coupling only to baryon number is phenomenologically allowed, even if $m_B<m_Z$ and $α_B \approx 0.2$. In our previous work we assumed that kinetic mixing between the baryon number and hypercharge gauge bosons (via an $F^{μν}_B F_{μν}^Y$ term) was small enough to evade constraints from precision electroweak measurements. In this paper we propose a class of models in which this term is naturally absent above the electroweak scale. We show that the generation of a mixing term through radiative corrections in the low-energy effective theory does not…
Baryon triality (B3) is a Z3 discrete symmetry that can protect the proton from decay. Although its realization does not require supersymmetry, it is particularly appealing in the supersymmetry as an alternative to the popular R-parity. We discuss the issues in gauging B3, and present the minimal supersymmetric model with B3 as the remnant discrete symmetry of a TeV scale U(1) gauge symmetry. A flavor-dependent U(1) charge is necessary to achieve this, and it results in very distinguishable and flavorful predictions for the LHC experiments. We find a complementarity between a 2-lepton sneutrin…
In the grand-unified models based on SU(15) and SU(16) in which the quarks and leptons are un-unified at the intermediate stages, we show that ${\rm BR}\; (K_L \to μe) \leq 10^{-14}$ and ${\rm BR}\; (K^+ \to π^+μe) \leq 10^{-14}$ despite the presence of leptoquark gauge bosons. Thus, the observation of these processes in the ongoing or upcoming experiments will rule out the models.
We propose a constraint on the noncommutative gauge theory with U(N) gauge group which gives rise to a noncommutative version of the SU(N) gauge group. The baryon operator is also constructed.
A lepto-baryonic left-right symmetric theory is considered along with pointing out stable dark matter candidates whose stability is ensured automatically where leptons and baryons are defined as local gauge symmetries. These theories are generally anomalous and the possible gauge anomaly free solutions for these theories are presented. It is found that the neutral component of fermion triplets can be a viable dark matter candidate originally introduced for gauge anomaly cancellation. The other dark matter possibilities within this lepto-baryonic left-right symmetric theory are also presented.
In gauge theories like the standard model, the electric charges of the fermions can be heavily constrained from the classical structure of the theory and from the cancellation of anomalies. There is however mounting evidence suggesting that these anomaly constraints are not as well motivated as the classical constraints. In light of this we discuss possible modifications of the minimal standard model which will give us complete electric charge quantisation from classical constraints alone. Because these modifications to the standard model involve the consideration of baryon number violating sc…
We investigate the spontaneous breaking of the Baryon (B) and Lepton (L) number at the TeV scale in supersymmetric models. A simple extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model where B and L are spontaneously broken local gauge symmetries is proposed. The B and L symmetry breaking scales are defined by the supersymmetry breaking scale. By gauging B and L we understand the absence of the baryon and lepton number violating interactions of dimension four and five in the MSSM. Furthermore we show that even though these symmetries are spontaneously broken there are no dangerous operators …
We investigate supersymmetric QCD with gauge group SU(2) and a baryon deformation to the superpotential. The existence of an uplifted vacuum at the origin with tree level metastability is demonstrated. When this model is implemented in a direct gauge mediation scenario we therefore find gaugino masses which are comparable to sfermion masses and parameterised by an effective number of messengers 1/8. All deformations are well motivated by appealing to the electric theory and an R-symmetry. This R-symmetry is explicitly broken by the same term responsible for supersymmetry breaking. Moreover, th…
We study the supersymmetric leptogenesis via $LH_{u}$ flat direction with a gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry. We find that the resultant baryon asymmetry is enhanced compared with the case without a gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry. The baryon asymmetry is proportional to the reheating temperature of inflation, but it is independent of the gravitino mass. If high reheating temperatures of inflation $T_{R}\sim 10^{10}\GEV$ are available, the mass of the lightest neutrino, $m_{ν1}\sim 10^{-4}\EV$, is small enough to explain the baryon asymmetry in the present universe. Furthermore, the gravitino mass in…
We discuss the phenomenology of a light U(1) gauge boson, $γ_B$, that couples only to baryon number. Gauging baryon number at high energies can prevent dangerous baryon-number violating operators that may be generated by Planck scale physics. However, we assume at low energies that the new U(1) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken and that the $γ_B$ mass $m_B$ is smaller than $m_Z$. We show for $m_Υ<m_B<m_Z$ that the $γ_B$ coupling $α_B$ can be as large as $\sim 0.1$ without conflicting with the current experimental constraints. We argue that $α_B\sim 0.1$ is large enough to produce visible …
We analyze several signals at HERA and the Tevatron of a light $U(1)_B$ gauge boson ($γ_B$) coupling to baryon number. We show that the study of the production of $b \bar{b}$ pairs at the (upgraded) Tevatron can exclude $γ_B$ with masses ($m_B$) in the range $40 \lesssim m_B \lesssim 300$ GeV for $γ_B$ couplings ($α_B$) greater than $2 \times 10^{-2}$ ($3 \times 10^{-3}$). We also show that the HERA experiments cannot improve the present bounds on $γ_B$. Moreover, we demonstrate that the production at HERA and the Tevatron of di--jet events with large rapidity gaps between the jets cannot be e…
We show that the Standard Model Lagrangian, including small neutrino masses, has an anomaly-free discrete Z_6 symmetry. This symmetry can emerge naturally from I^{3}_{R}+L_i+L_j-2L_k gauge symmetry (L_i is the i-th lepton number) and ensure the stability of the nucleon even when the threshold of new physics Λis low. All ΔB=1 and ΔB=2 (B is the baryon number) effective operators are forbidden by the Z_6 symmetry. ΔB=3 operators are allowed, but they arise only at dimension 15. We estimate the lifetime for "triple nucleon decay" resulting from these operators and find that Λcan be as low as 10^2…
We argue that simpler fermionic contents, responsible for the extension of the standard model with gauged lepton and baryon charges, can be constructed by assuming existence of so-called leptoquarks (j,k) with exotic electric charges q_j=1/2, q_k=-1/2. Some new features in our model are that (i) as the natural consequences of anomaly cancelation the right-handed neutrinos exist, and the number of the observed fermion families is equal to the number of the fundamental colors; (ii) although the lepton and baryon charges are conserved, the neutrinos can obtain small masses through the type I sees…
We consider a 5D SUSY $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times {\cal U}(1)$ model compactified on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2$ orbifold. To cancel anomalies arising from the presence of ${\cal U}(1)$, we employ a Chern-Simons term and also chiral fields which could reside on the brane or in the bulk depending on the model. The presence of ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry leads to baryon number conservation, gives rise to matter parity, and permits satisfactory neutrino masses and mixings even for a low fundamental scale. The brane Fayet-Iliopoulos D-terms naturally break ${\cal U}(1)$, leaving N=1 SUSY unbroken in…
We discuss the phenomenology of a light U(1) gauge boson, $γ_B$, that couples only to baryon number. We assume that the new U(1) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken and that the $γ_B$ mass is smaller than $m_Z$. Nevertheless, we show that the model survives the current experimental constraints. In addition, we argue that evidence for the existence of such a particle could be hidden in existing LEP and Tevatron data. We determine the allowed regions of the $m_B$-$α_B$ plane, where $m_B$ is the $γ_B$ mass, and where $4 πα_B$ is the squared gauge coupling. We point out that in some parts of th…
We analyze the conventional perturbative treatment of sphaleron-induced baryon number washout relevant for electroweak baryogenesis and show that it is not gauge-independent due to the failure of consistently implementing the Nielsen identities order-by-order in perturbation theory. We provide a gauge-independent criterion for baryon number preservation in place of the conventional (gauge-dependent) criterion needed for successful electroweak baryogenesis. We also review the arguments leading to the preservation criterion and analyze several sources of theoretical uncertainties in obtaining a …
The minimal gauged U(1)$_{L_μ-L_τ}$ model is a simple extension of the Standard Model and has a strong predictive power for the neutrino sector. In particular, the mass spectrum and couplings of heavy right-handed neutrinos are determined as functions of three neutrino Dirac Yukawa couplings, with which we can evaluate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe generated through their decay, i.e., leptogenesis. In this letter, we study leptogenesis in the minimal gauged U(1)$_{L_μ-L_τ}$ model. It turns out that the sign of the resultant baryon asymmetry for the case with the Dirac CP phase, $δ$, lar…
We reinvestigate the scenario that the amount of the baryons and the gravitino dark matter is naturally explained by the decay of the Q balls in the gauge-mediated SUSY breaking. Equipped by the more correct decay rates into gravitinos and baryons recently derived, we find that the scenario with the direct production of the gravitino dark matter from the Q-ball decay works naturally.
Models where the baryon (B) and lepton (L) numbers are local gauge symmetries that are spontaneously broken at a low scale are revisited. We find new extensions of the Standard Model which predict the existence of fermions that carry both baryon and lepton numbers (i.e., leptoquarks). The local baryonic and leptonic symmetries can be broken at a scale close to the electroweak scale and we do not need to postulate the existence of a large desert to satisfy the experimental constraints on baryon number violating processes like proton decay.
The s-wave interaction of $\bar{D} Λ_c, \bar{D} Σ_c, \bar{D} Λ_c, \bar{D}{}^* Σ_c$ and $\bar{D}Σ^*_c, \bar{D}{}^*Σ^*_c$, is studied within a unitary coupled channels scheme with the extended local hidden gauge approach. In addition to the Weinberg-Tomozawa term, several additional diagrams via the pion-exchange are also taken into account as box potentials. Furthermore, in order to implement the full coupled channels calculation, some of the box potentials which mix the vector-baryon and pseudoscalar-baryon sectors are extended to construct the effective transition potentials. As a result, we …
We perform an analysis on ${B^0} - {{\bar B}^0}$ mixing in the extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model where baryon and lepton numbers are local gauge symmetries (BLMSSM) by using the effective Hamiltonian method. And the constraint of a 125 GeV Higgs to the parameter space has also been consid-ered. The numerical results indicate that the contributions of the extra particles can be sizeable in ${B^0} - {{\bar B}^0}$ mixing. For certain parameter sets, the theoretical prediction of mass differences $Δm_{B}$ agrees with the current experimental result. Furthermore, ${B^0} - {{\ba…
We argue that inflationary dynamics may support a scenario where significant matter-antimatter asymmetry is generated from initially small-scale quantum fluctuations that are subsequently stretched out over large scales. This scenario can be realised in extensions of the Standard Model with an extra gauge symmetry having mixed anomalies with the electroweak gauge symmetry. Inflationary baryogenesis in a model with gauged baryon number is considered in detail.
We consider a model with gauged baryon number that may be rendered asymptotically safe when gravitational effects above the Planck scale are taken into account. We study the ultraviolet fixed points in this theory and determine the restrictions on the parameter space of the model at the TeV scale following from the requirement that the asymptotic fixed points are reached. Assuming that the new gauge symmetry is broken at the TeV scale, we comment on the phenomenological implications of these restrictions.
In soliton models expressed in terms of the non-linear chiral field, the electric current has an anomalous gauge-field contribution as the baryon current does. We study the spin polarized Skyrmions coupled with the electromagnetic field via the gauged Wess-Zumino term and calculate configurations of the Skyrmion and the gauge field with boundary conditions to ensure the physical charge number for baryons. Although the electromagnetic field via the gauged Wess-Zumino term affects physical quantities in small amounts, we find that the magnetic field forms a dipole structure owing to a circular e…
The string breaking phenomenon in QCD can be studied using the gauge/string duality. In this approach, one can make estimates of some of the string breaking distances at non-zero temperature and baryon chemical potential. These point towards the enhancement of baryon production in strong decays of heavy mesons in dense baryonic medium.
We investigate the dark matter and the cosmological baryon asymmetry in a simple theory where baryon (B) and lepton (L) number are local gauge symmetries that are spontaneously broken. In this model, the cold dark matter candidate is the lightest new field with baryon number and its stability is an automatic consequence of the gauge symmetry. Dark matter annihilation is either through a leptophobic gauge boson whose mass must be below a TeV or through the Higgs boson. Since the mass of the leptophobic gauge boson has to be below the TeV scale one finds that in the first scenario there is a low…
In grand unified theories with gauge groups larger than SU(5), the multiplets that contain the known quarks and leptons also contain fermions that are singlets under the Standard Model gauge group. Some of these could be the dark matter of the universe. Grand unified theories can also have accidental U(1) global symmetries (analogous to B-L in minimal SU(5)) that can stabilize dark matter. These ideas are illustrated in an SU(6) model.
The Peccei-Quinn (PQ) solution to the Strong CP Problem is expected to fail unless the global symmetry U(1)${}_{\rm PQ}$ is protected from Planck-scale operators up to high mass dimension. Suitable protection can be achieved if the PQ symmetry is an automatic consequence of some gauge symmetry. We highlight that if baryon number is promoted to a gauge symmetry, the exotic fermions needed for anomaly cancellation can elegantly provide an implementation of the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov 'hidden axion' mechanism with a PQ symmetry protected from Planck-scale physics.
We investigate the Q-ball decay in the gauge-mediated SUSY breaking. Q balls decay mainly into nucleons, and partially into gravitinos, while they are kinematically forbidden to decay into sparticles which would be cosmologically harmful. This is achieved by the Q-ball charge small enough to be unstable for the decay, and large enough to be protected kinematically from unwanted decay channel. We can then have right amounts of the baryon asymmetry and the dark matter of the universe, evading any astrophysical and cosmological observational constraints such as the big bang nucleosynthesis, which…
Using a coupled channel unitary approach, combining the heavy quark spin symmetry and the dynamics of the local hidden gauge, we investigate the meson-baryon interaction with hidden beauty and obtain several new states of $N^*$ around 11 GeV. We consider the basis of states $η_b N$, $ΥN$, $B Λ_b$, $B Σ_b$, $B^* Λ_b$, $B^* Σ_b$, $B^* Σ_b^*$ and find four basic bound states which correspond to $B Σ_b$, $B Σ_b^*$, $B^* Σ_b$ and $B^* Σ_b^*$, decaying mostly into $η_b N$ and $ΥN$ and with a binding energy about 50-130 MeV with respect to the thresholds of the corresponding channel. All of them have…
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence for strongly coupled gauge theories, we calculate thermalization of mesons caused by a time-dependent change of a baryon number chemical potential. On the gravity side, the thermalization corresponds to a horizon formation on the probe flavor brane in the AdS throat. Since heavy ion collisions are locally approximated by a sudden change of the baryon number chemical potential, we discuss implication of our results to RHIC and LHC experiments, to find a rough estimate of rather rapid thermalization time-scale t_{th} < 1 [fm/c]. We also discuss universality of ou…
A recent D-brane model designed to accommodate a phenomenologically acceptable fourth generation of chiral fermions was noted to produce an unexpected additional unbroken nonanomalous U(1) gauge group at the string scale. We show that the corresponding charges acting on MSSM fields count baryon and lepton numbers. If broken spontaneously at lower scales, these U(1)_B and U(1)_L symmetries provide potential avenues for preserving baryogenesis while nonetheless explaining the suppression of proton decay (without the need for R parity), as well as the smallness of right-handed neutrino Majorana m…
We consider the string breaking phenomenon within effective string models which purport to mimic QCD with two light flavors, with a special attention to baryon modes. We make some estimates of the string breaking distances at zero and non-zero baryon chemical potentials. Our estimates point towards the enhancement of baryon production in strong decays of heavy mesons in dense baryonic matter. We also suggest that the enhanced production of $Λ_c^+$ baryons in PbPb collisions is mainly due to larger values of chemical potential.
We discuss two cosmological issues in a generic gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY)-breaking model, namely the Universe's baryon asymmetry and the gravitino dark-matter density. We show that both problems can be simultaneously solved if there exist extra matter multiplets of a SUSY-invariant mass of the order of the ``$μ$-term'', as suggested in several realistic SUSY grand-unified theories. We propose an attractive scenario in which the observed baryon asymmetry is produced in a way totally independent of the reheating temperature of inflation without causing any cosmological gravitino proble…
Chimera baryons are an important element of strongly coupled theories that provide a microscopic origin for UV complete composite Higgs models (CHMs), since they play the role of top partners in top partial compositeness. In a particular interesting realisation of CHMs based upon an underlying $Sp(4)$ gauge theory, such exotic objects are composed of two fermion constituents transforming on the fundamental, and one on the 2-index antisymmetric representations. We perform lattice computations of the chimera baryon spectrum in the quenched approximation. We present preliminary results for the ma…
It has recently been suggested that the baryon washout problem of the standard electroweak baryogenesis scenario could be avoided if inflation ends with a period of parametric resonance at a low enough energy density. I present results of numerical simulations in which this process was studied in the Abelian Higgs model. Our results show that because of the masslessness of the gauge field, the parametric resonance takes place naturally, and that the system reaches a quasi-equilibrium state in which the long-wavelength part of the spectrum has a high effective temperature. This enhances baryon …
The baryon asymmetry of the universe may be explained by rotations of the QCD axion in field space and baryon number violating processes. We consider the minimal extension of the Standard Model by a non-Abelian gauge interaction, $SU(2)_R$, whose sphaleron process violates baryon number. Assuming that axion dark matter is also created from the axion rotation by the kinetic misalignment mechanism, the mass scale of the $SU(2)_R$ gauge boson is fixed as a function of the QCD axion decay constant, and vise versa. Significant portion of the parameter space has already been excluded by new gauge bo…
We investigate the Q-ball decay into the axino dark matter in the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. In our scenario, the Q ball decays mainly into nucleons and partially into axinos to account for the baryon asymmetry and the dark matter of the universe simultaneously. The Q ball decays well before the big bang nucleosynthesis so that it is not affected by the decay. The decay into the supersymmetric particles of the minimal supersymmetric standard model is kinematically prohibited until the very end of the decay, and we could safely make their abundances small enough for the successful b…
The linear sigma model with pions and sigma coupled to baryons and a (massive) gauge vector meson is considered for the description of a finite baryonic density system. The stability equation for the bound system is studied in the homogeneous limit considering quantum fluctuations for the scalar and pseudo scalar fields within a variational method with truncations. Nearly exact solutions for the stability equation which also solve the field equations are sought semi-analytically. Bosonic fields are found to have non zero expected classical values at finite density corresponding to condensates …
We show that the baryon asymmetry of the universe can be explained in models where the Higgs couples to the Chern-Simons term of the hypercharge group and is away from the late-time minimum of its potential during inflation. The Higgs then relaxes toward this minimum once inflation ends which leads to the production of (hyper)magnetic helicity. We discuss the conditions under which this helicity can be approximately conserved during its joint evolution with the thermal plasma. At the electroweak phase transition the helicity is then converted into a baryon asymmetry by virtue of the chiral ano…
We argue that the charge fractionalization in quarks has a hidden topological character related to a broken ${\cal Z}_2$ symmetry between integer-charged bare quarks and leptons. The mechanism is a tunneling process occurring in time between standard field configurations of a pure gauge form with different topological winding numbers associated with integer-charged bare quarks in the far past and future. This transition, which nonperturbatively normalizes local bare charges with a universal accumulated value, corresponds to a specific topologically nontrivial configuration of the weak gauge fi…
Instanton solutions of non-abelian Yang-Mills theories generate an effective action that may induce lepton and baryon number violations, namely $ΔB = ΔL = n_f$, being $n_f$ the number of families coupled to the gauge group. In this article we study instanton mediated processes in a $SU(2)_{\ell} \otimes SU(2)_h \otimes U(1)$ extension of the Standard Model that breaks universality by singularizing the third family. In the construction of the instanton Green functions we account systematically for the inter-family mixing. This allows us to use the experimental bounds on proton decay in order to…
The fermion-sign problem at finite density is a persisting challenge for Monte-Carlo simulations. Theories that do not have a sign problem can provide valuable guidance and insight for physically more relevant ones that do. Replacing the gauge group SU(3) of QCD by the exceptional group G2, for example, leads to such a theory. It has mesons as well as bosonic and fermionic baryons, and shares many features with QCD. This makes the G2 gauge theory ideally suited to study general properties of dense, strongly-interacting matter, including baryonic and nuclear Fermi pressure effects. Here we pres…
We introduce a natural origin of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry with a sufficiently good precision. In the standard model, the baryon number symmetry U(1)_B arises accidentally due to the SU(3)_C color gauge symmetry, and it protects the proton from a decay at a sufficient level. Likewise, if there is an SU(N) gauge symmetry in the hidden sector, an accidental hidden baryon number symmetry U(1)_{B_H} can appear. The hidden baryon number is solely obtained by the structure of the SU(N) group. In particular, the quality of the U(1)_{B_H} can be arbitrarily good for an asymptotically-free theory …
