It is well known that classical varieties of $Σ$-algebras correspond bijectively to finitary monads on $\mathsf{Set}$. We present an analogous result for varieties of ordered $Σ$-algebras, i.e., classes presented by inequations between $Σ$-terms. We prove that they correspond bijectively to strongly finitary monads on $\mathsf{Pos}$. That is, those finitary monads which preserve reflexive coinserters. We deduce that strongly finitary monads have a coinserter presentation, analogous to the coequaliser presentation of finitary monads due to Kelly and Power. We also show that these monads are liftings of finitary monads on $\mathsf{Set}$.
In this paper we prove that in the context of varieties with Right Existentially Definable Factor Congruences, definability of the property "e and f are complementary central elements", stability by complements and coextensivity of its respective algebraic category, are equivalent.
We investigate unital, subtractive and strongly unital regular categories with enough projectives and give characterizations of their projective covers. The categorical equation "strongly unital = unital + subtractive" is explored: this leads to proofs of their varietal characterizations in terms of the categorical properties of the corresponding algebraic theories.
In this paper we introduce a description of ordered groupoids as a particular type of double categories. This enables us to turn Lawson's correspondence between ordered groupoids and left-cancellative categories into a biequivalence. We use this to identify which ordered functors are maps of sites in the sense that they give rise to geometric morphisms between the induced sheaf categories, and establish a Comparison Lemma for maps between Ehresmann sites.
Applying (enriched) categorical structures we define the notion of ordered sheaf on a quantaloid Q, which we call `Q-order'. This requires a theory of semicategories enriched in the quantaloid Q, that admit a suitable Cauchy completion. There is a quantaloid Idl(Q) of Q-orders and ideal relations, and a locally ordered category Ord(Q) of Q-orders and monotone maps; actually, Ord(Q)=Map(Idl(Q)). In particular is Ord(Omega), with Omega a locale, the category of ordered objects in the topos of sheaves on Omega. In general Q-orders can equivalently be described as Cauchy complete categories enrich…

In (B-Gran, 2004), was given a categorical formulation of the Shifting Lemma which is a characterization of the Congruence Modular Varieties among all the variety of Universal Algebra, introduced in (Gumm, 1983). Starting from a characterization of this Shifting Lemma by a property of the fibers of the fibration of points $¶\EE$ (B, 2005), on the model of what happens for Mal'tsev categories, we shall investigate three directions:\\ 1) a new one: in following the golden thread of abelian split epimorphisms naturally provided by this characterization;\\ 2) a more or less expected one: in measur…
We prove that the tangent developables of the varieties appearing in the third row of the Tits-Freudenthal magic square admit categorical crepant resolutions of singularities.
In this paper we prove Homological Projective Duality for crepant categorical resolutions of several classes of linear determinantal varieties. By this we mean varieties that are cut out by the minors of a given rank of a n x m matrix of linear forms on a given projective space. As applications, we obtain pairs of derived-equivalent Calabi-Yau manifolds, and address a question by A. Bondal asking whether the derived category of any smooth projective variety can be fully faithfully embedded in the derived category of a smooth Fano variety. Moreover we discuss the relation between rationality an…
This paper supplements [17], showing that categorically the layered theory is the same as the theory of ordered monoids (e.g. the max-plus algebra) used in tropical mathematics. A layered theory is developed in the context of categories, together with a "tropicalization functor" which permits us to pass from usual algebraic geometry to the tropical world. We consider tropical varieties from this categorical viewpoint, with emphasis on polynomial functions and their roots.
In universal algebra, it is well known that varieties admitting a majority term admit several Mal'tsev-type characterizations. The main aim of this paper is to establish categorical counterparts of some of these characterizations for regular categories. We prove a categorical version of Bergman's Double-projection Theorem: a regular category is a majority category if and only if every subobject $S$ of a finite product $A_1 \times A_2 \times \cdots \times A_n$ is uniquely determined by its two-fold projections. We also establish a categorical counterpart of the Pairwise Chinese Remainder Theore…
Finitary monads on $\mathsf{Pos}$ are characterized as the precisely the free-algebra monads of varieties of algebras. These are classes of ordered algebras specified by inequations in context. Analagously, finitary enriched monads on $\mathsf{Pos}$ are characterized: here we work with varieties of coherent algebras which means that their operations are monotone.
A lifting of a semilattice S is an algebra A such that the semilattice of compact (=finitely generated) congruences of A is isomorphic to S. The aim of this work is to give a categorical theory of partial algebras endowed with a partial subalgebra together with a semilattice-valued distance, that we call gamps. This part of the theory is formulated in any variety of (universal) algebras. Let V and W be varieties of algebras (on a finite similarity type). Let P be a finite lattice of order-dimension d>0. Assume that we have a diagram of semilattice with a lifting in V, but with no "partial lift…
We introduce and study the notion of affine varieties associated to ordered bases and establish Galois connection between the power set of $A^n_K$ and the power set of $K[x_1, . . ., x_n]$, and then induce a Galois correspondence. We generalize the idea by defining affine varieties associated to linear operators. We produce Hilbert's Nullstellensatz version for such varieties and show that there is a 1-1 correspondence between this kind of varieties in $A^n_K$ and the "usual" affine varieties in $A^n_K$. We prove that the \usual" affine varieties forms a skeleton for the category of all affine…
The purpose of the present paper is to show that: Eilenberg-type correspondences = Birkhoff's theorem for (finite) algebras + duality. We consider algebras for a monad T on a category D and we study (pseudo)varieties of T-algebras. Pseudovarieties of algebras are also known in the literature as varieties of finite algebras. Two well-known theorems that characterize varieties and pseudovarieties of algebras play an important role here: Birkhoff's theorem and Birkhoff's theorem for finite algebras, the latter also known as Reiterman's theorem. We prove, under mild assumptions, a categorical vers…
We establish, generalizing Di Nola and Lettieri's categorical equivalence, a Morita-equivalence between the theory of lattice-ordered abelian groups and that of perfect MV-algebras. Further, after observing that the two theories are not bi-interpretable in the classical sense, we identify, by considering appropriate topos-theoretic invariants on their common classifying topos, three levels of bi-intepretability holding for particular classes of formulas: irreducible formulas, geometric sentences and imaginaries. Lastly, by investigating the classifying topos of the theory of perfect MV-algebra…
