This paper examines the community formed by the Twitter users that used a city-level hashtag. In particular, we provide a network perspective of the city of Athens, Greece, as demonstrated by the analysis and visualization of the relevant Twitter hashtag data, in order to present both an overview and deeper insights at the microblogging practices of this geographic local network. Further analysis suggests that the Twitter community defined by the members of the network shows strong signs of a real-life community.
The rapid diffusion of "microblogging" services such as Twitter is ushering in a new era of possibilities for organizations to communicate with and engage their core stakeholders and the general public. To enhance understanding of the communicative functions microblogging serves for organizations, this study examines the Twitter utilization practices of the 100 largest nonprofit organizations in the United States. The analysis reveals there are three key functions of microblogging updates-"information," "community," and "action." Though the informational use of microblogging is extensive, nonp…
Twitter (one example of microblogging) is widely being used by researchers to understand human behavior, specifically how people behave when a significant event occurs and how it changes user microblogging patterns. The changing microblogging behavior can reveal patterns that can help in detecting real-world events. However, the Twitter data that is available has limitations, such as, it is incomplete and noisy and the samples are irregular. In this paper we create a model, called Twitter Behavior Agent-Based Model (TBAM) to simulate Twitter pattern and behavior using Agent-Based Modeling (ABM…
Microblogging services such as Twitter are an increasingly important way to communicate, both for individuals and for groups through the use of hashtags that denote topics of conversation. However, groups can be easily blocked from communicating through blocking of posts with the given hashtags. We propose #h00t, a system for censorship resistant microblogging. #h00t presents an interface that is much like Twitter, except that hashtags are replaced with very short hashes (e.g., 24 bits) of the group identifier. Naturally, with such short hashes, hashtags from different groups may collide and #…
This paper studies for the first time the usage and propagation of hashtags in a new and fundamentally different type of social media that is i) without profiles and ii) location-based to only show nearby posted content. Our study is based on analyzing the mobile-only Jodel microblogging app, which has an established user base in several European countries and Saudi Arabia. All posts are user to user anonymous (i.e., no displayed user handles) and are only displayed in the proximity of the user's location (up to 20 km). It thereby forms local communities and opens the question of how informati…

Large scale analysis and statistics of socio-technical systems that just a few short years ago would have required the use of consistent economic and human resources can nowadays be conveniently performed by mining the enormous amount of digital data produced by human activities. Although a characterization of several aspects of our societies is emerging from the data revolution, a number of questions concerning the reliability and the biases inherent to the big data "proxies" of social life are still open. Here, we survey worldwide linguistic indicators and trends through the analysis of a la…
The Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) is widely accepted to hold true under certain assumptions. One of its implications is that the prediction of stock prices at least in the short run cannot outperform the random walk model. Yet, recently many studies stressing the psychological and social dimension of financial behavior have challenged the validity of the EMH. Towards this aim, over the last few years, internet-based communication platforms and search engines have been used to extract early indicators of social and economic trends. Here, we used Twitter's social networking platform to model…
People use microblogging platforms like Twitter to involve with other users for a wide range of interests and practices. Twitter profiles run by different types of users such as humans, bots, spammers, businesses and professionals. This research work identifies six broad classes of Twitter users, and employs a supervised machine learning approach which uses a comprehensive set of features to classify users into the identified classes. For this purpose, we exploit users' profile and tweeting behavior information. We evaluate our approach by performing 10-fold cross validation using manually ann…

Sentiment analysis can largely influence the people to get the update of the current situation. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a contagious illness caused by the coronavirus 2 that causes severe respiratory symptoms. The lives of millions have continued to be affected by this pandemic, several countries have resorted to a full lockdown. During this lockdown, people have taken social networks to express their emotions to find a way to calm themselves down. People are spreading their sentiments through microblogging websites as one of the most preventive steps of this disease is the socialization to …
We describe a methodology of rating the influence of a Twitter ac-count in this famous microblogging service. We then evaluate it over real ac-counts, under the belief that influence is not only a matter of quantity (amount of followers), but also a mixture of quality measures that reflect interaction, awareness, and visibility in the social sphere. The authors of this paper have created InfluenceTracker, a publicly available website where anyone can rate and compare the recent activity of any Twitter account.
Microblogging websites, especially Twitter have become an important means of communication, in today's time. Often these services have been found to be faster than conventional news services. With millions of users, a need was felt to classify users based on ambient metadata associated with their user accounts. We particularly look at the effectiveness of the profile description field in order to carry out the task of user classification. Our results show that such metadata can be an effective feature for any classification task.
Complex networks are important tools for analyzing the information flow in many aspects of nature and human society. Using data from the microblogging service Twitter, we study networks of correlations in the appearance of words from three different categories, international brands, nouns and US major cities. We create networks where the strength of links is determined by a similarity measure based on the rate of coappearance of words. In comparison with the null model, where words are assumed to be uncorrelated, the heavy-tailed distribution of pair correlations is shown to be a consequence o…
There has been a tremendous rise in the growth of online social networks all over the world in recent times. While some networks like Twitter and Facebook have been well documented, the popular Chinese microblogging social network Sina Weibo has not been studied. In this work, we examine the key topics that trend on Sina Weibo and contrast them with our observations on Twitter. We find that there is a vast difference in the content shared in China, when compared to a global social network such as Twitter. In China, the trends are created almost entirely due to retweets of media content such as…
A particular challenge in the area of social media analysis is how to find communities within a larger network of social interactions. Here a community may be a group of microblogging users who post content on a coherent topic, or who are associated with a specific event or news story. Twitter provides the ability to curate users into lists, corresponding to meaningful topics or themes. Here we describe an approach for crowdsourcing the list building efforts of many different Twitter users, in order to identify topical communities. This approach involves the use of ensemble community finding t…
News recommendation is one of the most challenging tasks in recommender systems, mainly due to the ephemeral relevance of news to users. As social media, and particularly microblogging applications like Twitter or Weibo, gains popularity as platforms for news dissemination, personalized news recommendation in this context becomes a significant challenge. We revisit news recommendation in the microblogging scenario, by taking into consideration social interactions and observations tracing how the information that is up for recommendation spreads in an underlying network. We propose a deep-learn…
The communication revolution has perpetually reshaped the means through which people send and receive information. Social media is an important pillar of this revolution and has brought profound changes to various aspects of our lives. However, the open environment and popularity of these platforms inaugurate windows of opportunities for various cyber threats, thus social networks have become a fertile venue for spammers and other illegitimate users to execute their malicious activities. These activities include phishing hot and trendy topics and posting a wide range of contents in many topics…
Twitter, a microblogging service, has evolved into a powerful communication platform with millions of active users who generate immense volume of microposts on a daily basis. To facilitate effective categorization and easy search, users adopt hashtags, keywords or phrases preceded by hash (#) character. Successful prediction of the spread and propagation of information in the form of trending topics or hashtags in Twitter, could help real time identification of new trends and thus improve marketing efforts. Social theories such as consistency theory suggest that people prefer harmony or consis…
Twitter is one of the most popular microblogging services in the world. The great amount of information within Twitter makes it an important information channel for people to learn and share news. Twitter hashtag is an popular feature that can be viewed as human-labeled information which people use to identify the topic of a tweet. Many researchers have proposed event-detection approaches that can monitor Twitter data and determine whether special events, such as accidents, extreme weather, earthquakes, or crimes take place. Although many approaches use hashtags as one of their features, few o…
Twitter is a social media giant famous for the exchange of short, 140-character messages called "tweets". In the scientific community, the microblogging site is known for openness in sharing its data. It provides a glance into its millions of users and billions of tweets through a "Streaming API" which provides a sample of all tweets matching some parameters preset by the API user. The API service has been used by many researchers, companies, and governmental institutions that want to extract knowledge in accordance with a diverse array of questions pertaining to social media. The essential dr…
In the contemporary world, a significant number of people use social networking services for a variety of purposes, including, but not limited to, communicating, exchanging messages and searching for information. A popular social network in the political arena is Twitter, a microblogging service for posting messages of up to 280 characters, called "tweets," where influential politicians from various countries often use this medium to spread ideas and make public statements. In this work, an analysis was made of the connections of candidates for the presidency of the Republic of Brazil in the y…
Twitter is a popular microblogging platform. When users send out messages, other users have the ability to forward these messages to their own subgraph. Most research focuses on increasing retweetability from a node's perspective. Here, we center on improving message style to increase the chance of a message being forwarded. To this end, we simulate an artificial Twitter-like network with nodes deciding deterministically on retweeting a message or not. A genetic algorithm is used to optimize message composition, so that the reach of a message is increased. When analyzing the algorithm's runtim…
Most previous analysis of Twitter user behavior is focused on individual information cascades and the social followers graph. We instead study aggregate user behavior and the retweet graph with a focus on quantitative descriptions. We find that the lifetime tweet distribution is a type-II discrete Weibull stemming from a power law hazard function, the tweet rate distribution, although asymptotically power law, exhibits a lognormal cutoff over finite sample intervals, and the inter-tweet interval distribution is power law with exponential cutoff. The retweet graph is small-world and scale-free,…
In this paper we examine the information sharing practices of people living in cities amid armed conflict. We describe the volume and frequency of microblogging activity on Twitter from four cities afflicted by the Mexican Drug War, showing how citizens use social media to alert one another and to comment on the violence that plagues their communities. We then investigate the emergence of civic media "curators," individuals who act as "war correspondents" by aggregating and disseminating information to large numbers of people on social media. We conclude by outlining the implications of our ob…
Data extracted from social networks like Twitter are increasingly being used to build applications and services that mine and summarize public reactions to events, such as traffic monitoring platforms, identification of epidemic outbreaks, and public perception about people and brands. However, such services are vulnerable to attacks from socialbots $-$ automated accounts that mimic real users $-$ seeking to tamper statistics by posting messages generated automatically and interacting with legitimate users. Potentially, if created in large scale, socialbots could be used to bias or even invali…
Twitter, one of the biggest and most popular microblogging Websites, has evolved into a powerful communication platform which allows millions of active users to generate huge volume of microposts and queries on a daily basis. To accommodate effective categorization and easy search, users are allowed to make use of hashtags, keywords or phrases prefixed by hash character, to categorize and summarize their posts. However, valid hashtags are not restricted and thus are created in a free and heterogeneous style, increasing difficulty of the task of tweet categorization. In this paper, we propose a…
Twitter, a microblogging service, is todays most popular platform for communication in the form of short text messages, called Tweets. Users use Twitter to publish their content either for expressing concerns on information news or views on daily conversations. When this expression emerges, they are experienced by the worldwide distribution network of users and not only by the interlocutor(s). Depending upon the impact of the tweet in the form of the likes, retweets and percentage of followers increases for the user considering a window of time frame, we compute attention factor for each tweet…
As of writing this paper, COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) has spread to more than 220 countries and territories. Following the outbreak, the pandemic's seriousness has made people more active on social media, especially on the microblogging platforms such as Twitter and Weibo. The pandemic-specific discourse has remained on-trend on these platforms for months now. Previous studies have confirmed the contributions of such socially generated conversations towards situational awareness of crisis events. The early forecasts of cases are essential to authorities to estimate the requirements of …
Tumblr, as one of the most popular microblogging platforms, has gained momentum recently. It is reported to have 166.4 millions of users and 73.4 billions of posts by January 2014. While many articles about Tumblr have been published in major press, there is not much scholar work so far. In this paper, we provide some pioneer analysis on Tumblr from a variety of aspects. We study the social network structure among Tumblr users, analyze its user generated content, and describe reblogging patterns to analyze its user behavior. We aim to provide a comprehensive statistical overview of Tumblr and …
There has been a tremendous rise in the growth of online social networks all over the world in recent years. It has facilitated users to generate a large amount of real-time content at an incessant rate, all competing with each other to attract enough attention and become popular trends. While Western online social networks such as Twitter have been well studied, the popular Chinese microblogging network Sina Weibo has had relatively lower exposure. In this paper, we analyze in detail the temporal aspect of trends and trend-setters in Sina Weibo, contrasting it with earlier observations in Twi…
Online hate speech, particularly over microblogging platforms like Twitter, has emerged as arguably the most severe issue of the past decade. Several countries have reported a steep rise in hate crimes infuriated by malicious hate campaigns. While the detection of hate speech is one of the emerging research areas, the generation and spread of topic-dependent hate in the information network remain under-explored. In this work, we focus on exploring user behaviour, which triggers the genesis of hate speech on Twitter and how it diffuses via retweets. We crawl a large-scale dataset of tweets, ret…
Recently, numerous approaches have emerged in the social sciences to exploit the opportunities made possible by the vast amounts of data generated by online social networks (OSNs). Having access to information about users on such a scale opens up a range of possibilities, all without the limitations associated with often slow and expensive paper-based polls. A question that remains to be satisfactorily addressed, however, is how demography is represented in the OSN content? Here, we study language use in the US using a corpus of text compiled from over half a billion geo-tagged messages from t…
Owing to the popularity of Online Social Media (OSM), Internet users share a lot of information (including personal) on and across OSM services every day. For example, it is common to find a YouTube video embedded in a blog post with an option to share the link on Facebook. Users recommend, comment, and forward information they receive from friends, contributing in spreading the information in and across OSM services. We term this information diffusion process from one OSM service to another as Cross-Pollination, and the network formed by users who participate in Cross-Pollination and content …
With the acceptance of Western culture and science, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has become a controversial issue in China. So, it's important to study the public's sentiment and opinion on TCM. The rapid development of online social network, such as twitter, make it convenient and efficient to sample hundreds of millions of people for the aforementioned sentiment study. To the best of our knowledge, the present work is the first attempt that applies sentiment analysis to the domain of TCM on Sina Weibo (a twitter-like microblogging service in China). In our work, firstly we collect twee…

Aggression in online social networks has been studied mostly from the perspective of machine learning which detects such behavior in a static context. However, the way aggression diffuses in the network has received little attention as it embeds modeling challenges. In fact, modeling how aggression propagates from one user to another, is an important research topic since it can enable effective aggression monitoring, especially in media platforms which up to now apply simplistic user blocking techniques. In this paper, we address aggression propagation modeling and minimization on Twitter, sin…
