We compute corrections of order $α_s^3$ to the decay $b \to c \ell \barν$ taking into account massive charm quarks. In the on-shell scheme large three-loop corrections are found. However, in the kinetic scheme the three-loop corrections are below 1\% and thus perturbation theory is well under control. We furthermore provide results for the order $α_s^3$ corrections to $b \to u \ell \barν$ and the third-order QED corrections to the muon decay which will be important input for reducing the uncertainty of the Fermi coupling constant $G_F$.
Contributions of hadronic effects to the muonium physics and anomalous magnetic moment of muon are considered. Special attention is paid to higher-order effects and the uncertainty related to the hadronic contribution to the hyperfine structure interval in the ground state of muonium.
Combining neutrino oscillations at T2K or T2HK with antineutrinos oscillations from muon decay at rest (DAR) allows a determination of the leptonic CP-violating phase delta. The degeneracies of this phase with theta13 and theta23 are broken and delta can be reliably distinguished from 180-delta. We present the sensitivity to delta of T2(H)K together with a muon DAR experiment using Super-K as a near detector and Hyper-K at the Tochibora site as a far detector.
Characteristic patterns of cosmic neutrino spectrum reported by the IceCube collaboration and long-standing inconsistency between theory and experiment in muon anomalous magnetic moment are simultaneously explained by an extra leptonic force mediated by a gauge field with a mass of the MeV scale. With different assumptions for redshift distribution of cosmic neutrino sources, diffuse neutrino flux is calculated with the scattering between cosmic neutrino and cosmic neutrino background through the new leptonic force. Our analysis sheds light on a relation among lepton physics at the three diffe…
The latest measurements of the anomalous muon magnetic moment $a^{}_μ\equiv (g^{}_μ- 2)/2$ show a $4.2σ$ discrepancy between the theoretical prediction of the Standard Model and the experimental observations. In order to account for such a discrepancy, we consider a possible extension of the type-(I+II) seesaw model for neutrino mass generation with a gauged $L^{}_μ- L^{}_τ$ symmetry. By explicitly constructing an economical model with only one extra scalar singlet, we demonstrate that the gauge symmetry $U(1)^{}_{L^{}_μ- L^{}_τ}$ and its spontaneous breaking are crucially important not only f…
We derive the corrections induced by the W-boson propagator to the differential rates of the leptonic decay of a polarized muon and tau lepton. Results are presented both for decays inclusive of inner bremsstrahlung as well as for radiative ones, when a photon emitted in the decay process is measured. The numerical effect of these corrections is discussed. The definition of the Fermi constant is briefly reviewed.
We derive closed expressions and useful expansions for the contributions of the tree-level W-boson propagator to the the muon and tau leptonic decay rates. Calling M and m the masses of the initial and final charged leptons, our results in the limit m=0 are valid to all orders in M^2/M_W^2. In the terms of O(m_j^2/M_W^2) (m_j=M,m), our leading corrections, of O(M^2/M_W^2), agree with the canonical value (3/5) M^2/M_W^2, while the coefficient of our subleading contributions, of O(m^2/M_W^2), differs from that reported in the recent literature. A possible explanation of the discrepancy is presen…
We study the leptonic CP violation by employing the complete set of dimension-six pure leptonic effective operators. Connection among the observable at different energy scales can be made by the running of the renormalization group equations. Explicitly, we study the charged lepton electric dipole moment, muon Michel decay, and the triple spin-momentum correlations at the Linear Collider. We found the electron electric dipole moment, which starts at 2-loop level, severely constrains the possibilities to detect the CP violating signatures in muon decay and at the linear colliders.
We study the nuclear modification factors RAA and RCP of the high transverse momentum 5<pt<60 GeV/c distribution of muons in Pb--Pb collisions at LHC energies. We consider two pseudo-rapidity ranges covered by the LHC experiments: $|η|<2.5$ and $2.5<η<4$. Muons from semi-leptonic decays of heavy quarks (c and b) and from leptonic decays of weak gauge bosons (W and Z) are the main contributions to the muon pt distribution above a few GeV/c. We compute the heavy quark contributions using available pQCD-based programs. We include the nuclear shadowing modification of the parton distribution funct…
The recently proposed MUonE experiment at CERN aims at providing a novel determination of the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment through the study of elastic muon-electron scattering at relatively small momentum transfer. The anticipated accuracy of the order of 10ppm demands for high-precision predictions, including all the relevant radiative corrections. The fixed-order NNLO radiative corrections due to the emission of virtual and real leptonic pairs are described and their numerical impact is discussed for typical event selections of the MUonE experime…
One of the major motivations to search for a dark gauge boson of MeV-GeV scale is the long-standing muon g-2 anomaly. Because of active searches such as fixed target experiments and rare meson decays, the muon g-2 favored parameter region has been rapidly reduced. With the most recent data, it is practically excluded now in the popular dark photon model. We overview the issue and investigate a potentially alternative model based on the gauged lepton number or U(1)_L. The muon g-2 favored parameter region of the U(1)_L survives all the constraints that were critical in the dark photon case, yet…
We address the observed discrepancies in the anomalous magnetic dipole moments (MDM) of the muon and electron by extending the inert two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with SM gauge singlet complex scalar field and singlet Vector-like Lepton (VLL) field. We obtain the allowed parameter space constrained from the Higgs decays to gauge Bosons at LHC, LEP II data and electro-weak precision measurements. The muon and electron MDM's are then explained within a common parameter space for different sets of allowed couplings and masses of the model particles.
We study the five-body decays $μ^- \to e^- e^+ e^- ν_μ \barν_{e}$ and $τ^- \to \ell^- \ell'^+\ell'^-ν_τ\barν_{\ell}$ for $\ell, \ell'=e, μ$ within the Standard Model (SM) and in a general effective field theory description of the weak interactions at low energies. We compute the branching ratios and compare our results with two previous, mutually discrepant, SM calculations. By assuming a general structure for the weak currents we derive the expressions for the energy and angular distributions of the three charged leptons when the decaying lepton is polarized, which will be useful in precise t…
The Michel parameter xi" has been determined from a measurement of the longitudinal polarization of positrons emitted in the decay of polarized and depolarized muons. The result, xi" = 0.981 +- 0.045stat +- 0.003syst, is consistent with the Standard Model prediction of unity, and provides an order of magnitude improvement in the relative precision of this parameter. This value sets new constraints on exotic couplings beyond the dominant V-A description of the leptonic weak interaction.
It is known that muons are scarce just after the birth of a proto-neutron star via a supernova explosion but get more abundant as the proto-neutron star cools via neutrino emissions on the Kelvin-Helmholtz timescale. In this paper we evaluate all the relevant rates of the neutrino interactions with muons at different times in the proto-neutron star cooling. We are particularly interested in the late phase ($ t \gtrsim 10 \operatorname{s}$), which will be accessible in the next Galactic supernova but has not been studied well so far. We calculate both leptonic and semi-leptonic processes, for t…
Higher-order hadronic corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon have been evaluated including next-to-next-to-leading-order insertions of hadronic vacuum polarization and next-to-leading-order corrections to hadronic light-by-light scattering. This leaves a set of mixed leptonic and hadronic corrections in the form of double-bubble topologies as the only remaining hadronic effect at ${\mathcal O}(α^4)$. Here, we estimate these contributions by analyzing the respective cuts of the diagrams, suggesting that the impact is limited to $\lesssim 1\times 10^{-11}$ and thus negligible a…
Ultralight scalars, which are states that are either exactly massless or much lighter than any other massive particle in the model, appear in many new physics scenarios. Axions and majorons constitute well-motivated examples of this type of particle. In this work, we explore the phenomenology of these states in low-energy leptonic observables adopting a model independent approach that includes both scalar and pseudoscalar interactions. Then, we consider processes in which the ultralight scalar $ϕ$ is directly produced, such as $μ\to e \, ϕ$, or acts as a mediator, as in $τ\to μμμ$. Finally, co…
We compute the next-to-leading order QCD predictions for the vertical flux of atmospheric muons and neutrinos from decays of charmed particles, for different PDF's (MRS-R1, MRS-R2, CTEQ-4M and MRST) and different extrapolations of these at small partonic momentum fraction x. We find that the predicted fluxes vary up to almost two orders of magnitude at the largest energies studied, depending on the chosen extrapolation of the PDF's. We show that the spectral index of the atmospheric leptonic fluxes depends linearly on the slope of the gluon distribution function at very small x. This suggests …
We present a model explaining both the 4.2 $σ$ muon $g-2$ anomaly and the relic density of dark matter (DM) in which DM interacts with the Standard Model (SM) via a scalar portal boson $φ$ carrying both dark and SM leptonic numbers, and mediating a nondiagonal interaction between the electron and muon that allows $e \leftrightarrow μ$ transitions. The $φ$ could be produced in high-energy electron scattering off a target nuclei in the reaction $e Z \to μZφ$ followed by the prompt invisible decay $φ~\to$~DM particles and searched for in events with large missing energy accompanied by a single ou…
We propose a novel experimental setup for the determination of the leptonic CP-violating phase delta using the decay at rest (DAR) of mu+ from a single source located at distances of 10 and 30 km from two 20 kton organic liquid scintillator detectors. The mu+ are created by bombarding a target with a 9 mA beam of 800 MeV protons. With this proposal delta can be determined with a precision of about 20 (15) degrees in 6 (12) years. In contrast with the DAEdALUS project, only a single source is required and it runs with a duty factor of 100 percent. Therefore 9 mA is the maximum instanteous curre…
We study vertex corrections to the leptonic electroweak observables in the general MSSM at tan(beta) < 35. In particular, we address the question of whether supersymmetry can be responsible for the observed 2 sigma deviation from the Standard Model prediction in the invisible width of the Z. We find that the presence of a light (around 100 GeV) chargino and sleptons hinted by the muon g-2 measurements makes the agreement with experiment slightly better and improves the electroweak fit.
The Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation (MLFV) framework is discussed after the recent indication for CP violation in the leptonic sector. Among the three distinct versions of MLFV, the one with degenerate right-handed neutrinos will be disfavoured, if this indication is confirmed. The predictions for leptonic radiative rare decays and muon conversion in nuclei are analysed, identifying strategies to disentangle the different MLFV scenarios. The claim that the present anomalies in the semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays can be explained within the MLFV context is critically re-examined concluding that…
We consider massive Dirac electron antineutrino to be observed in the muon decay, $μ^{-} \rightarrow e^- +\barν_{e} + ν_μ$, at rest in the LAB reference frame. A computation of $\barν_{e}$ differential direct spectral shape and angular distribution was performed. This has resulted in transverse component of the neutrino polarization emerging from the nonstandard S, T sector of the Lorentz structure in the Fermi leptonic charged weak interaction. The calculation is based on empirical values of the coupling parameters.
We constrain some lepton flavor violating vertices in the context of the two Higgs doublet model type III, assuming that the lightest scalar Higgs mass $% m_{h^{0}} $is about $115 $GeV. Specifically, based on the $g-2 $muon factor and the decay width of$ μ\to eγ$,$ $the following quite general bounds are obtained:$ 7.62\times 10^{-4}\lesssim ξ_{μτ}^{2}\lesssim 4.44\times 10^{-2}, $ $ξ_{eτ}^{2}\lesssim 2.77\times 10^{-14}$. Additionally, based on the processes $τ\to μγ$, and $τ\to μμμ$, bounds on $ξ_{ττ} $and $ξ_{μμ} $are also gotten, such constraints on these parameters$ $still give enough roo…
If massless leptonic photons associated to electron, muon or tau leptonic number exist they would have been emitted from supernova 1987a via the annihilation process $ν\barν\toγ_{l}γ_{l}$. By requiring that this process does not carry away most of the energy that can be radiated by the supernova we obtain an upper limit on the leptonic photon coupling constants, $α_{l} < 5.4 \times 10^{-11}$. Under certain assumptions about $γ_{l}$ - trapping conditions we find that the region of $α_{l} = 10^{-8} - 10^{-7}$ might be of interest for an experimental search for leptonic photons.
Weakly interacting K --> pi X^0 emission with m_{X^0} \simeq m_{pi^0} is out of sight of the current K^+ --> pi^+ nu nubar study, but it can be sensed by the K_L --> pi^0 nu nubar search. This evades the usual Grossman-Nir bound of B(K_L --> pi^0 nu nubar) < 1.4 x 10^-9, thus the KOTO experiment is already starting to probe New Physics. An intriguing possibility is the Z' gauge boson of a weak leptonic force that couples to L_mu - L_tau (the difference between the muon and tauon numbers), which may explain the long-standing "muon g-2" anomaly, but is constrained by nu_mu N --> nu_mu N mu^+ mu^…
Introducing a leptonic U(1) gauge symmetry, we try to reproduce the gap in the cosmic neutrino spectrum reported by the IceCube collaboration, and at the same time, make an additional contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, which fills the gap between the standard model prediction and the experimental observation.
To aid the effort, the theoretical formulation for the fixed order NNLO QED corrections are described and the virtual NNLO leptonic corrections are calculated with complete mass effects.
We compute two-loop corrections to the vector current matching coefficient involving two heavy quark masses. The result is applied to the computation of the $Υ(1S)$ decay width into an electron or muon pair. We complement the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order corrections of Ref. arXiv:1401.3005 by charm quark mass effects up to second order in perturbation theory. Furthermore, we apply the formalism to $Γ(J/Ψ\to \ell^+\ell^-)$ and compare to the experimental data.
We discuss the minimal theory for quark-lepton unification at the low scale. In this context, the quarks and leptons are unified in the same representations and neutrino masses are generated through the inverse seesaw mechanism. The properties of the leptoquarks predicted in this theory are discussed in detail and we investigate the predictions for the leptonic and semi-leptonic decays of mesons. We study the possibility to explain the current value of $\mathcal{R}_K$ reported by the LHCb collaboration and the value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment reported by the Muon $g-2$ experiment at…
The new results on the muon anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) published by Fermilab in 2021, did not lead to a reduction of its long-pending deviation from the Standard Model (SM) value by more than 4$σ$. The explanation of this discrepancy by adding new particles to the theory puts many new physics models under tension when combined with the null results of the LHC direct searches for new particles. In this paper, we investigate the CP-violating Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the SM (NMSSM) with and without an inverse seesaw mechanism. We compute the one-loop supersymmetric contrib…
The prospects of measuring CP violation in the leptonic sector using the intense neutrino beams arising from muon decay in the straight sections of a muon accumulator ring (the so-called neutrino factory) are discussed.
We study a CP and T violating triple (spin) correlation in the muon to electron conversion in nuclei in the context of the seesaw mechanism. After concluding that the results are negative for all three seesaw types, we turn to the left-right symmetric theories as the original source of seesaw. We find that in general this correlation is of order one which offers a hope of observing CP violation in lepton flavor violating processes for a L-R scale below around 10-30 TeV. We discuss the conditions that could render to (unlikely) conspiracies as to suppress the CP violating effects.
Using dispersion relations, we derive the complete virtual QED contributions to Bhabha scattering due to vacuum polarization effects in photon propagation. We apply our result to hadronic corrections and to heavy lepton and top quark loop insertions. We give the first complete estimate of their net numerical effects for both small and large angle scattering at typical beam energies of meson factories, LEP, and the ILC. The effects turn out to be smaller, in most cases, than those corresponding to electron loop insertions, but stay, with amounts of typically one per mille, of relevance for prec…
An extended Higgs sector may allow for new scalar particles well below the weak scale. In this work, we present a detailed study of a light scalar $S$ with enhanced coupling to leptons, which could be responsible for the existing discrepancy between experimental and theoretical determinations of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We present an ultraviolet completion of this model in terms of the lepton-specific two-Higgs doublet model and an additional scalar singlet. We then analyze a plethora of experimental constraints on the universal low energy model, and this UV completion, along with t…
We revisit rare radiative leptonic decays $B_{s,d}\to γe^+e^-$ and $B_{s,d}\to γμ^+μ^-$ in the Standard Model and provide the updated estimates for various differential distributions (the branching ratios, the forward-backward asymmetry, and $R_{μ/e}$, the ratio of the differential distribution for muons over electrons in the final state). The new ingredients of this work compared to the existing theoretical analyses are the following: (i) we calculate all $B_d\toγ$ and $B_s\toγ$ form factors induced by the vector, axial-vector, tensor and pseudotensor quark currents within the relativistic di…
We point out at the peculiarity of B --> mu nu decay, namely the enhancement of the soft photon events which originate from the structure dependent part of the B --> mu nu gamma amplitude. This may be a dominant source of systematic uncertainty and compromise the projected experimental uncertainty on Gamma(B --> mu nu). We show that the effect of these soft photons can be controlled if the experimental cut on identification of soft photons is lowered and especially if the better resolution in identifying the momentum of muon emerging from B --> mu nu, is made. A lattice QCD computation of the …
Part of eikonal type contributions to $eμ$ large-angle high-energy scattering cross section is considered in a quasi-elastic experimental set-up. Apart from virtual corrections we examine inelastic processes with emission of one and two soft real photons as well as soft lepton and pion pairs. Virtual photon contributions are given within a logarithmic accuracy. Box type Feynman amplitudes with leptonic and hadronic vacuum polarization insertion are considered explicitly as well as double box ones. Wherever appropriate analytic expressions obtained are compared with those predicted by a structu…
Should $U(1)$ long-range forces be associated to electron, muon and/or tau quantum number then their ''fine structure constants" are seen to be bound by nucleosynthesis data to be less than about $1.7 \times 10^{-11}$. For $τ$ and $μ$ this is the best upper limit up to date
We explore the possibility of using the recently proposed THEIA detector to measure the $\bar ν_μ\rightarrow \bar ν_e$ oscillation with neutrinos from a muon decay at rest ($μ$DAR) source to improve the leptonic CP phase measurement. Due to its intrinsic low-energy beam, this $μ$THEIA configuration ($μ$DAR neutrinos at THEIA) is only sensitive to the genuine leptonic CP phase $δ_D$ and not contaminated by the matter effect. With detailed study of neutrino energy reconstruction and backgrounds at the THEIA detector, we find that the combination with the high-energy DUNE can significantly reduce…
The leptonic bound states positronium and muonium are used to constrain galileon contributions to the Lamb shift of muonic hydrogen. Through the application of a variety of bounds on lepton compositeness, it is shown that either the assumption of equating the charge radius of a particle with its galileon scale radius is incompatible with experiments or the scale of galileons must be $M>1.33$ GeV, too large to solve the muon problem. The possibility of stronger constraints in the future from true muonium are discussed.
The experimental observations of the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moment present discrepancies with respect to the Standard Model predictions. A class of flavor conserving Two Higgs Doublet model, stable under renormalization, that is capable of explaining both anomalies simultaneously is presented. This model can also explain an excess observed by ATLAS in $σ(pp\to S)_{[\text{ggF}]}\times \text{Br}(S\toτ^+τ^-)$.
The extension of the standard model with new high-scale weakly coupled physics involving right-handed neutrinos in an effective field theory framework (SMNEFT) allows for a systematic study of heavy neutrinos phenomenology in current and future experiments. We exploit the outstanding angular resolution in future lepton colliders to study the sensitivity of forward-backward asymmetries to discover the possible single production of heavy Majorana neutrinos via $e^{+}e^{-} \to N ν$, followed by a purely leptonic decay $N \to μ^{-} μ^{+} ν$ or a semi-leptonic decay $N \to μ^{-} \mathrm{j} \mathrm{…
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to W+γ production, including the leptonic decay of the W boson and taking into account all off-shell effects of the W boson, where the finite width of the W boson is implemented using the complex-mass scheme. Corrections induced by incoming photons are fully included and find particular emphasis in the discussion of phenomenological predictions for the LHC. The corresponding next-to-leading-order QCD corrections are reproduced as well. In order to separate hard photons from jets, a quark-to-photon fragmentation funct…
Secondary radiation of hadrons from a tau pair produced in electron positron collisions may constitute an important obstacle for precision measurements of the production cross section and of branching ratios. The rate for real and virtual radiation is calculated and various distributions are presented. For Z decays a comprehensive analysis is performed which incorporates real and virtual radiation of leptons. The corresponding results are also given for primary electron and muon pairs. Compact analytical formulae are presented for entirely leptonic configurations. Measurements of $Z$ partial d…
We investigate the structure of the experimentally significant electroweak bosonic loop corrections to the leptonic weak mixing angle, the leptonic Z-boson decay width, and the W-boson mass. It is shown that the bosonic corrections that have a sizable effect at the present level of experimental accuracy are directly related to the use of the Fermi constant G_F as input parameter for analyzing the LEP observables. Indeed, if the (theoretical value of the) leptonic width of the W boson is used as input parameter instead of the low-energy parameter G_F determined from muon decay, fermion-loop cor…
The measured rate for D_s -> l nu decays, where l is a muon or tau, is larger than the standard model prediction, which relies on lattice QCD, at the 3.8 sigma level. We discuss how robust the theoretical prediction is, and we show that the discrepancy with experiment may be explained by a charged Higgs boson or a leptoquark.
Leptoquarks are hypothetical new particles, which couple quarks directly to leptons. They experienced a renaissance in recent years as they are prime candidates to explain the so-called \textit{flavor anomalies}, i.e. the deviations between the Standard Model predictions and measurements in $b\to s\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ and $b\to cτν$ processes and in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. At the one-loop level these particles unavoidably generate effects in the purely leptonic processes like $Z\to\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$, $Z\toν\barν$, $W\to\ellν$ and $h\to\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ and can even generate non-…
We present a minimal extension of the Standard Model that can simultaneously account for the anomalies in semi-leptonic B meson decays and the muon g-2, give large CP violation in charm decays (up to the value recently measured by LHCb), and provide thermal-relic dark matter, while evading all constraints set by other flavour observables, LHC searches, and dark matter experiments. This is achieved by introducing only four new fields: a vectorlike quark, a vectorlike lepton, and two scalar fields (a singlet and a doublet) that mix due to the electroweak symmetry breaking and provide the dark ma…
We will examine the Left-Right Twin Higgs(LRTH) Models as a solution of muon g-2 anomaly with the background of the Higgs global fit data. In the calculation, the joint constrains from the theory, the precision electroweak data, the 125 GeV Higgs data, the leptonic flavor changing decay μ\to eγdecays, and the constraints m_{ν_R}>m_T>m_{W_H} are all considered. And with the small mass of the ϕ^0, the direct searches from the $h\to ϕ^0ϕ^0$ channels can impose stringent upper limits on Br(h\to ϕ^0ϕ^0) and can reduce the allowed region of m_{ϕ^0} and f. It is concluded that the muon g-2 anomaly ca…
There are several anomalous measurements in the decays induced by the quark level transition $b \to s μ^+ μ^-$, which do not agree with the predictions of the Standard Model. These measurements could be considered as signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model. Working within the framework of effective field theory, several groups have performed global fits to all $b \to s μ^+ μ^-$ data to identify the Lorentz structure of possible new physics. Many new physics scenarios have been suggested to explain the anomalies in the $b \to s μ^+ μ^-$ sector. In this work, we investigate the impact of…
