It is shown that an internal control based on a moving indicator function is able to stabilize the state of parabolic equations evolving in rectangular domains. For proving the stabilizability result, we start with a control obtained from an oblique projection feedback based on a finite number of static actuators, then we used the continuity of the state when the control varies in relaxation metric to construct a switching control where at each given instant of time only one of the static actuators is active, finally we construct the moving control by traveling between the static actuators. Numerical computations are performed by a concatenation procedure following a receding horizon control approach. They confirm the stabilizing performance of the moving control.
It is shown that an explicit oblique projection nonlinear feedback controller is able to stabilize semilinear parabolic equations, with time-dependent dynamics and with a polynomial nonlinearity. The actuators are typically modeled by a finite number of indicator functions of small subdomains. No constraint is imposed on the sign of the polynomial nonlinearity. The norm of the initial condition can be arbitrarily large, and the total volume covered by the actuators can be arbitrarily small. The number of actuators depend on the operator norm of the oblique projection, on the polynomial degree …
Stabilization of a class of time-varying parabolic equations with uncertain input data using Receding Horizon Control (RHC) is investigated. The diffusion coefficient and the initial function are prescribed as random fields. We consider both cases, uniform and log-normal distributions of the diffusion coefficient. The controls are chosen to be finite-dimensional and enter into the system as a linear combination of finitely many indicator functions (actuators) supported in open subsets of the spatial domain. Under suitable regularity assumptions, we study the expected (averaged) stabilizability…
An oblique projections based feedback stabilizability result in the literature is extended to a larger class of reaction-convection terms. A discussion is presented including a comparison between explicit oblique projections base feedback controls and Riccati based feedback controls. Advantages and limitations of each type of feedback are addressed as well as their finite-elements implementation. Results of numerical simulations are presented comparing their stabilizing performances for the case of time-periodic dynamics. It is shown that the solution of the periodic Riccati based feedback can…
In recently proposed stabilisation techniques for parabolic equations, a crucial role is played by a suitable sequence of oblique projections in Hilbert spaces, onto the linear span of a suitable set of M actuators, and along the subspace orthogonal to the space spanned by the first M eigenfunctions of the Laplacian operator. This new approach uses an explicit feedback law, which is stabilising provided that the sequence of operator norms of such oblique projections remains bounded. The main result of the paper is the proof that, for suitable explicitly given sequences of sets of actuators, th…
We study nonlinear systems with observation errors. The main problem addressed in this paper is the design of feedbacks for globally asymptotically controllable (GAC) control affine systems that render the closed loop systems input to state stable with respect to actuator errors. Extensions for fully nonlinear GAC systems with actuator errors are also discussed.
We consider an initial and boundary value problem the one dimensional wave equation with damping concentrated at an interior point. We prove a result of a logarithmic decay of the energy of a system with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The method used is based on the resolvent estimate approach which derives from the Carleman estimate technique. Under an algebraic assumption describing the right location of the actuator, we prove a logarithmic decay of the energy of solution. We show that this assumption is lower than the one given by [Tuc] and [AHT] which depends on the diophantine…
In this paper, we consider boundary stabilization for a cascade of ODE-heat system with state delay under actuator saturation. To stabilize the system, we design a state feedback controller via the backstepping method and find a bound on the domain of attraction. The latter bound is based on Lyapunov method, whereas the exponential stability of the delayed cascaded systems is proved by using Halanay's inequality. Numerical examples illustrate the efficiency of the method.
This is the first part of four series papers, aiming at the problem of actuator dynamics compensation for linear systems. We consider the stabilization of a type of cascade abstract linear systems which model the actuator dynamics compensation for linear systems where both the control plant and its actuator dynamics can be infinite-dimensional. We develop a systematic way to stabilize the cascade systems by a full state feedback. Both the well-posedness and the exponential stability of the resulting closed-loop system are established in the abstract framework. A sufficient condition of the exi…
In this paper, we investigate the problem of semi-global minimal time robust stabilization of analytic control systems with controls entering linearly, by means of a hybrid state feedback law. It is shown that, in the absence of minimal time singular trajectories, the solutions of the closed-loop system converge to the origin in quasi minimal time (for a given bound on the controller) with a robustness property with respect to small measurement noise, external disturbances and actuator noise.
It is shown that an oblique projection based feedback control is able to stabilize the state of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, evolving in rectangular domains, to a given time-dependent trajectory. The number of actuators is finite and consists of a finite number of indicator functions supported in small subdomains. Simulations are presented, in the one-dimensional case, showing the stabilizing performance of the feedback control.
Control systems over networks with a finite data rate can be conveniently modeled as hybrid (impulsive) systems. For the class of nonlinear systems in feedfoward form, we design a hybrid controller which guarantees stability, in spite of the measurement noise due to the quantization, and of an arbitrarily large delay which affects the communication channel. The rate at which feedback packets are transmitted from the sensors to the actuators is shown to be arbitrarily close to the infimal one.
The present work is concerned with the stabilization of a general class of time-varying linear parabolic equations by means of a finite-dimensional receding horizon control (RHC). The stability and suboptimality of the unconstrained receding horizon framework is studied. The analysis allows the choice of the squared $\ell_1$-norm as control cost. This leads to a nonsmooth infinite-horizon problem which provides stabilizing optimal controls with a low number of active actuators over time. Numerical experiments are given which validate the theoretical results and illustrate the qualitative diffe…
In this paper, we are concerned with the stabilization of linear port-Hamiltonian systems of arbitrary order $N \in \mathbb{N}$ on a bounded $1$-dimensional spatial domain $(a,b)$. In order to achieve stabilization, we couple the system to a dynamic boundary controller, that is, a controller that acts on the system only via the boundary points $a,b$ of the spatial domain. We use a nonlinear controller in order to capture the nonlinear behavior that realistic actuators often exhibit and, moreover, we allow the output of the controller to be corrupted by actuator disturbances before it is fed ba…
In this paper input-to-state practically stabilizing control laws for retarded, control-affine, nonlinear systems with actuator disturbance are investigated. The developed methodology is based on the Arstein's theory of control Liapunov functions and related Sontag's formula, extended to retarded systems. If the actuator disturbance is bounded, then the controller yields the solution of the closed-loop system to achieve an arbitrarily fixed neighborhood of the origin, by increasing a control tuning parameter. The considered systems can present an arbitrary number of discrete as well as distrib…
In this paper, we consider the boundary stabilization and observation of the multidimensional unstable heat equation. Since we consider the heat equation in a general domain, the usual partial differential equation back-stepping method is hard to apply to the considered problems. The unstable dynamics of the heat equation are treated by combining the finite-dimensional spectral truncation method and the dynamics compensation method. By introducing additional finite-dimensional actuator/sensor dynamics, the unbounded stabilization/observation turns to be a bounded one. As a result, the controll…
In this expository paper, which covers material presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Nonlinear Analysis, Differential Equations, and Control" (Montreal, Jul/Aug 1998), we deal with several questions related to stability and stabilization of nonlinear finite-dimensional continuous-time systems. We review the basic problem of feedback stabilization, placing an emphasis upon relatively new areas of research which concern stability with respect to "noise" (such as errors introduced by actuators or sensors). The table of contents is as follows: Review of Stability and Asymptotic Controll…
This work concerns the internal stabilization of underactuated linear systems of $m$ heat equations in cascade, where the control is placed internally in the first equation only and the diffusion coefficients are distinct. Combining the modal decomposition method with a recently introduced state-transformation approach for observation problems, a proportional-type stabilizing control is given explicitly. It is based on a transformation for the ODE system corresponding to the comparatively unstable modes into a target one, where calculation of the stabilization law is independent of the arbitra…
In this paper, the control problem for underactuated systems in the presence of external disturbances and model uncertainties is considered. An adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller (AFSMC) is proposed to solve the problem, satisfying the robustness properties against uncertainties and disturbances. The designed controller can be applied to a wide class of underactuated systems and have fewer restrictions, compared with many pervious works. To evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm, it is applied to an underactuated inverted pendulum and a Translational Oscillator/Rotational Actuator …
In this paper we consider feedback stabilization for parabolic variational inequalities of obstacle type with time and space depending reaction and convection coefficients and show exponential stabilization to nonstationary trajectories. Based on a Moreau-Yosida approximation, a feedback operator is established using a finite (and uniform in the approximation index) number of actuators leading to exponential decay of given rate of the state variable. Several numerical examples are presented addressing smooth and nonsmooth obstacle functions.
The plant to be stabilized is a system node $Σ$ with generating triple $(A,B,C)$ and transfer function $\bf G$, where $A$ generates a contraction semigroup on the Hilbert space $X$. The control and observation operators $B$ and $C$ may be unbounded and they are not assumed to be admissible. The crucial assumption is that there exists a bounded operator $E$ such that, if we replace ${\bf G}(s)$ by ${\bf G}(s)+E$, the new system $Σ_E$ becomes impedance passive. An easier case is when $\bf G$ is already impedance passive and a special case is when \mm $Σ$ has colocated sensors and actuators. Such…
In this investigation we use a simple model of the dynamics of an inviscid vortex sheet given by the Birkhoff-Rott equation to obtain fundamental insights about the potential for stabilization of shear layers using feedback control. As actuation we consider two arrays of point sinks/sources located a certain distance above and below the vortex sheet and subject to the constraint that their mass fluxes separately add up to zero. First, we demonstrate using analytical computations that the Birkhoff-Rott equation linearized around the flat-sheet configuration is in fact controllable when the numb…
This work is devoted to the problem of boundary stabilization of a mixture of two viscous and incompressible fluids in a three dimensional channel-like domain $(x,y,z)\in \mathbb{R}\times (0,1)\times\mathbb{R}$. The model consists of the Navier-Stokes equations, governing the fluid velocity, coupled with a convective Cahn-Hilliard equation for the relative density of the atoms of one of the fluids. The feedback controller, we design here, is with actuation only on the tangential component of the velocity field on both walls $y=0,1$. Moreover, it is given in a simple and explicit form, easy to …
This paper proposes an event-triggered boundary control for the safe stabilization of the Stefan PDE system with actuator dynamics. The control law is designed by applying Zero-Order Hold (ZOH) to the continuous-time safe stabilizing controller developed in our previous work. The event-triggering mechanism is then derived so that the imposed safety conditions associated with high order Control Barrier Function (CBF) are maintained and the stability of the closed-loop system is ensured. We prove that under the proposed event-triggering mechanism, the so-called ``Zeno" behavior is always avoided…
Polymer 3D-printing has been commercialized rapidly during recent years, however, there remains a matter of improving the manufacturing speed. Screw extrusion has a strong potential to fasten the process through simultaneous operation of the filament production and the deposition. This paper develops a control algorithm for screw extrusion-based 3D printing of thermoplastic materials through an observer-based output feedback design. We consider the thermodynamic model describing the time evolution of the temperature profile of an extruded polymer by means of a partial differential equation (PD…
This work is concerned with practical stabilization of nonlinear systems by means of inf-convolution-based sample-and-hold control. It is a fairly general stabilization technique based on a generic non-smooth control Lyapunov function (CLF) and robust to actuator uncertainty, measurement noise, etc. The stabilization technique itself involves computation of descent directions of the CLF. It turns out that non-exact realization of this computation leads not just to a quantitative, but also qualitative obstruction in the sense that the result of the computation might fail to be a descent directi…
In systems where the ability to actuate is a scarce resource, e.g., spacecrafts, it is desirable to only apply a given controller in an intermittent manner--with periods where the controller is on and periods where it is off. Motivated by the event-triggered control paradigm, where state-dependent triggers are utilized in a sample-and-hold context, we generalize this concept to include state triggers where the controller is off thereby creating a framework for intermittent control. Our approach utilizes certificates--either Lyapunov or barrier functions--to design intermittent trigger laws tha…

In this paper, we propose, discuss, and validate an online Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) method for multi-rotor aerial systems with arbitrarily positioned and oriented rotors which simultaneously addresses the local reference trajectory planning and tracking problems. This work brings into question some common modeling and control design choices that are typically adopted to guarantee robustness and reliability but which may severely limit the attainable performance. Unlike most of state of the art works, the proposed method takes advantages of a unified nonlinear model which aims …
Sensor and actuator selection problems (SASP) are some of the core problems in dynamic systems design and control. These problems correspond to determining the optimal selection of sensors (measurements) or actuators (control nodes) such that certain estimation/control objectives can be achieved. While the literature on SASP is indeed inveterate, the vast majority of the work focuses on linear(ized) representation of the network dynamics, resulting in the placements of sensors or actuators (SA) that are valid for confined operating regions. As an alternative, herein we propose a new general fr…
This paper concerns feedback stabilization of point vortex equilibria above an inclined thin plate and a three-plate configuration known as the Kasper Wing in the presence of an oncoming uniform flow. The flow is assumed to be potential and is modeled by the 2D incompressible Euler equations. Actuation has the form of blowing and suction localized on the main plate and is represented in terms of a sink-source singularity, whereas measurement of pressure across the plate serves as system output. We focus on point-vortex equilibria forming a one-parameter family with locus approaching the traili…
