A general class of time-varying regression models is considered in this paper. We estimate the regression coefficients by using local linear M-estimation. For these estimators, weak Bahadur representations are obtained and are used to construct simultaneous confidence bands. For practical implementation, we propose a bootstrap based method to circumvent the slow logarithmic convergence of the theoretical simultaneous bands. Our results substantially generalize and unify the treatments for several time-varying regression and auto-regression models. The performance for ARCH and GARCH models is studied in simulations and a few real-life applications of our study are presented through analysis of some popular financial datasets.
We propose a difference-based nonparametric methodology for the estimation and inference of the time-varying auto-covariance functions of a locally stationary time series when it is contaminated by a complex trend with both abrupt and smooth changes. Simultaneous confidence bands (SCB) with asymptotically correct coverage probabilities are constructed for the auto-covariance functions under complex trend. A simulation-assisted bootstrapping method is proposed for the practical construction of the SCB. Detailed simulation and a real data example round out our presentation.
In this paper, we develop a complete methodology for detecting time-varying/non time-varying parameters in ARCH processes. For this purpose, we estimate and test various semiparametric versions of the time-varying ARCH model (tv-ARCH) which include two well known non stationary ARCH type models introduced in the econometric literature. Using kernel estimation, we show that non time-varying parameters can be estimated at the usual parametric rate of convergence and for a Gaussian noise, we construct estimates that are asymptotically efficient in a semiparametric sense. Then we introduce two sta…
We provide some comments on the article `High-dimensional simultaneous inference with the bootstrap' by Ruben Dezeure, Peter Buhlmann and Cun-Hui Zhang.
We consider asymptotic distributions of maximum deviations of sample covariance matrices, a fundamental problem in high-dimensional inference of covariances. Under mild dependence conditions on the entries of the data matrices, we establish the Gumbel convergence of the maximum deviations. Our result substantially generalizes earlier ones where the entries are assumed to be independent and identically distributed, and it provides a theoretical foundation for high-dimensional simultaneous inference of covariances.
In this paper the class of ARCH$(\infty)$ models is generalized to the nonstationary class of ARCH$(\infty)$ models with time-varying coefficients. For fixed time points, a stationary approximation is given leading to the notation ``locally stationary ARCH$(\infty)$ process.'' The asymptotic properties of weighted quasi-likelihood estimators of time-varying ARCH$(p)$ processes ($p<\infty$) are studied, including asymptotic normality. In particular, the extra bias due to nonstationarity of the process is investigated. Moreover, a Taylor expansion of the nonstationary ARCH process in terms of st…
Let $X_1, \ldots, X_n\in\mathbb{R}^p$ be i.i.d. random vectors. We aim to perform simultaneous inference for the mean vector $\mathbb{E} (X_i)$ with finite polynomial moments and an ultra high dimension. Our approach is based on the truncated sample mean vector. A Gaussian approximation result is derived for the latter under the very mild finite polynomial ($(2+θ)$-th) moment condition and the dimension $p$ can be allowed to grow exponentially with the sample size $n$. Based on this result, we propose an innovative resampling method to construct simultaneous confidence intervals for mean vecto…
We describe the asymptotic behavior of the conditional least squares estimator of the offspring mean for subcritical strongly stationary Galton--Watson processes with regularly varying immigration with tail index $α\in (1,2)$. The limit law is the ratio of two dependent stable random variables with indices $α/2$ and $2α/3$, respectively, and it has a continuously differentiable density function. We use point process technique in the proofs.
We consider parameter estimation, hypothesis testing and variable selection for partially time-varying coefficient models. Our asymptotic theory has the useful feature that it can allow dependent, nonstationary error and covariate processes. With a two-stage method, the parametric component can be estimated with a $n^{1/2}$-convergence rate. A simulation-assisted hypothesis testing procedure is proposed for testing significance and parameter constancy. We further propose an information criterion that can consistently select the true set of significant predictors. Our method is applied to autor…
We propose new simultaneous inference methods for diagnostic trials with elaborate factorial designs. Instead of the commonly used total area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, our parameters of interest are partial areas under ROC curve segments that represent clinically relevant biomarker cut-off values. We construct a nonparametric multiple contrast test for these parameters and show that it asymptotically controls the family-wise type one error rate. Finite sample properties of this test are investigated in a series of computer experiments. We provide empirical and th…
We propose a pointwise inference algorithm for high-dimensional linear models with time-varying coefficients. The method is based on a novel combination of the nonparametric kernel smoothing technique and a Lasso bias-corrected ridge regression estimator. Due to the non-stationarity feature of the model, dynamic bias-variance decomposition of the estimator is obtained. With a bias-correction procedure, the local null distribution of the estimator of the time-varying coefficient vector is characterized for iid Gaussian and heavy-tailed errors. The limiting null distribution is also established …
In this article, we introduce a system of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) consisting of time-dependent covariates and consider both fixed and random effects set-ups. We also allow the functional part associated with the drift function to depend upon unknown parameters. In this general set-up of SDE system we establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the M LE through verification of the regularity conditions required by existing relevant theorems. Besides, we consider the Bayesian approach to learning about the population parameters, and prove consistency and asymptotic normali…
We study semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear models when some linear covariates are not observed, but ancillary variables are available. Semiparametric profile least-square based estimation procedures are developed for parametric and nonparametric components after we calibrate the error-prone covariates. Asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are established. We also propose the profile least-square based ratio test and Wald test to identify significant parametric and nonparametric components. To improve accuracy of the proposed tests for small or moderate sample size…
Some units from a population receive the same treatment that is different from treatments available for other reservoir populations. The minimal sufficient statistic $s$ for the pre-treatment $x$-covariates's distributions in the populations is the coarsest balancing score. $s$ is used to select matching units for simultaneous causal comparisons of multiple treatments.Necessary and sufficient conditions on the posterior distribution of the treatment variable (given $x$) determine whether a statistic is either sufficient or minimal sufficient for the x-covariates' distributions. Results in the …
The computational complexity of simultaneous inference methods in high-dimensional linear regression models quickly increases with the number variables. This paper proposes a computationally efficient method based on the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse. Under a symmetry assumption on the available regressors, the estimators are normally distributed and accompanied by a closed-form expression for the standard errors that is free of tuning parameters. We study the numerical performance in Monte Carlo experiments that mimic the size of modern applications for which existing methods are computationall…
Simultaneous inference allows for the exploration of data while deciding on criteria for proclaiming discoveries. It was recently proved that all admissible post-hoc inference methods for true discoveries must employ closed testing. In this paper, we investigate efficient closed testing with local tests of a special form: thresholding a function of sums of test scores for the individual hypotheses. Under this special design, we propose a new statistic that quantifies the cost of multiplicity adjustments, and we develop fast (mostly linear-time) algorithms for post-hoc inference. Paired with re…
This paper proposes a bootstrap-assisted procedure to conduct simultaneous inference for high dimensional sparse linear models based on the recent de-sparsifying Lasso estimator (van de Geer et al. 2014). Our procedure allows the dimension of the parameter vector of interest to be exponentially larger than sample size, and it automatically accounts for the dependence within the de-sparsifying Lasso estimator. Moreover, our simultaneous testing method can be naturally coupled with the margin screening (Fan and Lv 2008) to enhance its power in sparse testing with a reduced computational cost, or…
We consider kernel estimation of marginal densities and regression functions of stationary processes. It is shown that for a wide class of time series, with proper centering and scaling, the maximum deviations of kernel density and regression estimates are asymptotically Gumbel. Our results substantially generalize earlier ones which were obtained under independence or beta mixing assumptions. The asymptotic results can be applied to assess patterns of marginal densities or regression functions via the construction of simultaneous confidence bands for which one can perform goodness-of-fit test…
We consider covariate adjusted regression (CAR), a regression method for situations where predictors and response are observed after being distorted by a multiplicative factor. The distorting factors are unknown functions of an observable covariate, where one specific distorting function is associated with each predictor or response. The dependence of both response and predictors on the same confounding covariate may alter the underlying regression relation between undistorted but unobserved predictors and response. We consider a class of highly flexible adjustment methods for parameter estima…

Simultaneous inference after model selection is of critical importance to address scientific hypotheses involving a set of parameters. In this paper, we consider high-dimensional linear regression model in which a regularization procedure such as LASSO is applied to yield a sparse model. To establish a simultaneous post-model selection inference, we propose a method of contraction and expansion (MOCE) along the line of debiasing estimation that enables us to balance the bias-and-variance trade-off so that the super-sparsity assumption may be relaxed. We establish key theoretical results for th…
Inference and prediction under the sparsity assumption have been a hot research topic in recent years. However, in practice, the sparsity assumption is difficult to test, and more importantly can usually be violated. In this paper, to study hypothesis test of any group of parameters under non-sparse high-dimensional linear models, we transform the null hypothesis to a testable moment condition and then use the self-normalization structure to construct moment test statistics under one-sample and two-sample cases, respectively. Compared to the one-sample case, the two-sample additionally require…
We study the rank of the instantaneous or spot covariance matrix $Σ_X(t)$ of a multidimensional continuous semi-martingale $X(t)$. Given high-frequency observations $X(i/n)$, $i=0,\ldots,n$, we test the null hypothesis $rank(Σ_X(t))\le r$ for all $t$ against local alternatives where the average $(r+1)$st eigenvalue is larger than some signal detection rate $v_n$. A major problem is that the inherent averaging in local covariance statistics produces a bias that distorts the rank statistics. We show that the bias depends on the regularity and a spectral gap of $Σ_X(t)$. We establish explicit mat…
Strict stationarity is a common assumption used in the time series literature in order to derive asymptotic distributional results for second-order statistics, like sample autocovariances and sample autocorrelations. Focusing on weak stationarity, this paper derives the asymptotic distribution of the maximum of sample autocovariances and sample autocorrelations under weak conditions by using Gaussian approximation techniques. The asymptotic theory for parameter estimation obtained by fitting a (linear) autoregressive model to a general weakly stationary time series is revisited and a Gaussian …
We propose a distributed bootstrap method for simultaneous inference on high-dimensional massive data that are stored and processed with many machines. The method produces an $\ell_\infty$-norm confidence region based on a communication-efficient de-biased lasso, and we propose an efficient cross-validation approach to tune the method at every iteration. We theoretically prove a lower bound on the number of communication rounds $τ_{\min}$ that warrants the statistical accuracy and efficiency. Furthermore, $τ_{\min}$ only increases logarithmically with the number of workers and the intrinsic di…

We consider the least-squares regression problem with unknown noise variance, where the observed data points are allowed to be corrupted by outliers. Building on the median-of-means (MOM) method introduced by Lecue and Lerasle Ann.Statist.48(2):906-931(April 2020) in the case of known noise variance, we propose a general MOM approach for simultaneous inference of both the regression function and the noise variance, requiring only an upper bound on the noise level. Interestingly, this generalization requires care due to regularity issues that are intrinsic to the underlying convex-concave optim…
A standard assumption for causal inference about the joint effects of time-varying treatment is that one has measured sufficient covariates to ensure that within covariate strata, subjects are exchangeable across observed treatment values, also known as "sequential randomization assumption (SRA)". SRA is often criticized as it requires one to accurately measure all confounders. Realistically, measured covariates can rarely capture all confounders with certainty. Often covariate measurements are at best proxies of confounders, thus invalidating inferences under SRA. In this paper, we extend the…
In this paper, we consider the time-inhomogeneous nonlinear time series regression for a general class of locally stationary time series. On one hand, we propose sieve nonparametric estimators for the time-varying regression functions which can achieve the min-max optimal rate. On the other hand, we develop a unified simultaneous inferential theory which can be used to conduct both structural and exact form testings on the functions. Our proposed statistics are powerful even under locally weak alternatives. We also propose a multiplier bootstrapping procedure for practical implementation. Our …
In various applications of regression analysis, in addition to errors in the dependent observations also errors in the predictor variables play a substantial role and need to be incorporated in the statistical modeling process. In this paper we consider a nonparametric measurement error model of Berkson type with fixed design regressors and centered random errors, which is in contrast to much existing work in which the predictors are taken as random observations with random noise. Based on an estimator that takes the error in the predictor into account and on a suitable Gaussian approximation,…
Sequential importance sampling algorithms have been defined to estimate likelihoods in models of ancestral population processes. However, these algorithms are based on features of the models with constant population size, and become inefficient when the population size varies in time, making likelihood-based inferences difficult in many demographic situations. In this work, we modify a previous sequential importance sampling algorithm to improve the efficiency of the likelihood estimation. Our procedure is still based on features of the model with constant size, but uses a resampling technique…
We establish asymptotic properties of $M$-estimators, defined in terms of a contrast function and observations from a continuous-time locally stationary process. Using the stationary approximation of the sequence, $θ$-weak dependence, and hereditary properties, we give sufficient conditions on the contrast function that ensure consistency and asymptotic normality of the $M$-estimator. As an example, we obtain consistency and asymptotic normality of a localized least squares estimator for observations from a sequence of time-varying Lévy-driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Furthermore, for a s…
