We theoretically investigate multiple-$Q$ spin textures, which are composed of superpositions of spin density waves with different wave numbers, for an effective spin model of centrosymmetric itinerant magnets. Our focus is on the interplay between biquadratic interactions arising from the spin-charge coupling and magnetic anisotropy caused by the spin-orbit coupling. Taking into account two types of the magnetic anisotropy, single-ion anisotropy and bond-dependent anisotropy, we elucidate magnetic phase diagrams for an archetypal triangular-lattice system in the absence and presence of an external magnetic field. In the case of the single-ion anisotropy, we find a plethora of multiple-$Q$ instabilities depending on the strength and the sign of the anisotropy (easy plane or easy axis), including a skyrmion crystal with topological number of two. In an external magnetic field, we find that a skyrmion crystal with topological number of one is stabilized by the in-plane (out-of-plane) magnetic field under the easy-plane (easy-axis) anisotropy. We also examine the stability of the field-induced skyrmion crystal by rotating the field direction. As a biproduct, we show that a triple-$Q$ state with nonzero chirality appears in the presence of the biquadratic interaction and the easy-axis anisotropy. Meanwhile, we find that the bond-dependent anisotropy also stabilizes both types of skyrmion crystals. We show that, however, for the skyrmion crystal with topological number of one, Bloch- and Néel-type skyrmion crystals are selectively realized depending on the sign of the bond-dependent anisotropy. Moreover, we find yet another multiple-$Q$ states, including two types of meron crystals with the skyrmion numbers of one and two. The systematic investigation will provide a reference to complex magnetic textures in centrosymmetric magnetic metals.
Exchange interaction tends to favor collinear or coplanar magnetic orders in rotationally invariant spin systems. Indeed, such magnetic structures are usually selected by thermal or quantum fluctuations in highly frustrated magnets. Here we show that a complex noncoplanar magnetic order with a quadrupled unit cell is stabilized by itinerant electrons on the pyrochlore lattice. Specifically we consider the Kondo-lattice and Hubbard models at quarter filling. The electron Fermi 'surface' at this filling factor is topologically equivalent to three intersecting Fermi circles. Perfect nesting of th…
Noncollinear and noncoplanar magnetic textures including skyrmions and vortices act as emergent electromagnetic fields and give rise to novel electronic and transport properties. We here report a unified understanding of noncoplanar magnetic orderings emergent from the spin-charge coupling in itinerant magnets. The mechanism has its roots in effective multiple spin interactions beyond the conventional Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) mechanism, which are ubiquitously generated in itinerant electron systems with local magnetic moments. Carefully examining the higher-order perturbations in t…
We study noncoplanar magnetic ordering in frustrated itinerant magnets. For a family of Kondo square lattice models with classical local moments, we find that a double-$Q$ noncoplanar vortex crystal has lower energy than the single-$Q$ helical order expected from the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction whenever the lattice symmetry dictates four global maxima in the bare magnetic susceptibility. By expanding in the small Kondo exchange and the degree of noncoplanarity, we demonstrate that this noncoplanar state arises from a Fermi surface instability, and it is generic for a wide range o…
We study double-exchange models with itinerant t2g electrons in spinel and pyrochlore crystals. In both cases the localized spins form a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. We show that the strong directional dependence of t2g orbitals leads to unusual Fermi surfaces that induce spin superstructures and noncoplanar orderings for a weak coupling between itinerant electrons and localized spins. Implications of our results to ZnV2O4 and Cd2Os2O7 are also discussed.
Effective actions, such as nonlinear sigma models, are important tools in studying low-energy fluctuations of magnetically ordered states. Here we derive an effective action for the smooth order-parameter distortions of noncoplanar magnetic textures [with an SO(3) order parameter, as opposed to the SO(3)/SO(2)=S^2 of collinear magnets] coupled to itinerant electrons. Noncoplanar magnetic textures commonly arise in the presence of electron-mediated long-range spin exchange interactions, giving rise to the emergence of rich electronic phenomena such as anomalous quantum Hall effect. We parameter…
The Hubbard model with geometrical frustration is investigated in a metallic phase close to half-filling. We calculate the single particle spectral function for the triangular lattice within dynamical cluster approximation, which is further combined with non-crossing approximation and fluctuation exchange approximation to treat the resulting cluster Anderson model. It is shown that frustration due to non-local correlations suppresses short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations and thereby assists the formation of heavy quasi-particles near half-filling.
We study the double-exchange model at half-filling with competing superexchange interactions on a triangular lattice, combining exact diagonalization and Monte-Carlo methods. We find that in between the expected itinerant ferromagnetic and $120^{\circ}$ Yafet-Kittel phases a robust scalar-chiral, insulating spin state emerges. At finite temperatures the ferromagnet - scalar-chiral quantum critical point is characterized by anomalous bad-metal behavior in charge transport as observed in frustrated itinerant magnets R$_2$Mo$_{2}$O$_7$.
Ground state of the periodic Anderson model on a cubic lattice is investigated by mean-field calculations, with focusing on the possibility of charge ordering. We show that three different charge-ordered phases appear at 3/2 filling, which are accompanied by ferromagnetic, noncoplanar triple-Q, and ferrimagnetic order, respectively. The triple-Q magnetic order is likely stabilized by emergent geometrical frustration in the charge-ordered phase with the ordering wave vector (pi,pi,pi). We show that the nearest-neighbor hopping between localized electrons stabilizes the triple-Q phase relative t…
A skyrmion crystal (SkX) expressed as a multiple number of spiral modulations manifests itself not only in its peculiar magnetic texture but also in nontrivial transport properties originating from an emergent magnetic field. We here report our numerical results for multiple SkXs in a centrosymmetric tetragonal crystal system. By performing simulated annealing for an effective spin model for itinerant magnets, we find that three types of the SkXs with the skyrmion numbers of one and two, which are characterized by different superpositions of helices, are stabilized in the ground state, and are…
Spin textures with nontrivial topology, such as vortices and skyrmions, have attracted attention as a source of unconventional magnetic, transport, and optical phenomena. Recently, a new generation of topological spin textures has been extensively studied in itinerant magnets; in contrast to the conventional ones induced, e.g., by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric systems, they are characterized by extremely short magnetic periods and stable even in centrosymmetric systems. Here we review such new types of topological spin textures with particular emphasis on their st…
Effect of the coupling to mobile carriers on the 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic state is investigated in a ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model on a frustrated triangular lattice. Using a variational calculation for various spin orderings up to a four-site unit cell, we identify the ground-state phase diagram with focusing on the lightly-doped region. We find that an electron doping from the band bottom immediately destabilizes a 120$^\circ$ coplanar antiferromagnetic order and induces a noncoplanar three-sublattice ordering accompanied by an intervening phase separation. This noncoplanar phase ha…
Localized spins and itinerant electrons rarely coexist in geometrically-frustrated spinel lattices. We show that the spinel CoV2O4 stands at the crossover from insulating to itinerant behavior and exhibits a complex interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons. In contrast to the expected paramagnetism, localized spins supported by enhanced exchange couplings are frustrated by the effects of delocalized electrons. This frustration produces a non-collinear spin state and may be responsible for macroscopic spin-glass behavior. Competing phases can be uncovered by external perturbati…
Whereas magnetic frustration is typically associated with local-moment magnets in special geometric arrangements, here we show that SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is a candidate for frustrated itinerant magnetism. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we find that antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations develop in the square Co layers of SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ below $T\approx100$ K centered at the stripe-type AF propagation vector of $(\frac{1}{2},~\frac{1}{2})$, and that their development is concomitant with a suppression of the uniform magnetic susceptibility determined via magnetization measurements. …
Employing the self-learning quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, we investigate the frustrated transverse-field triangle-lattice Ising model coupled to a Fermi surface. Without fermions, the spin degrees of freedom undergoes a second-order quantum phase transition between paramagnetic and clock-ordered phases. This quantum critical point (QCP) has an emergent U(1) symmetry and thus belongs to the (2+1)D XY universality class. In the presence of fermions, spin fluctuations introduce effective interactions among fermions and distort the bare Fermi surface towards an interacting one with hot spots and …
Interplay between itinerant electrons and localized spins in itinerant magnets gives rise to a variety of noncoplanar multiple-$Q$ spin textures, such as the skyrmion, hedgehog, meron, and vortex. We elucidate that another type of multiple-$Q$ state consisting of collinear sinusoidal waves, a magnetic bubble crystal, appears at finite temperatures in a centrosymmetric itinerant electron system. The results are obtained for the classical Kondo lattice model with easy-axis single-ion anisotropy on a triangular lattice by a large-scale numerical simulation. We find that a finite-temperature topol…
Using a hybrid method based on fermionic diagonalization and classical Monte Carlo, we investigate the interplay between itinerant and localized spins, with competing double- and super-exchange interactions, on a honeycomb lattice. For moderate superexchange, a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice of hexagons forms spontaneously. For slightly larger superexchange a dimerized groundstate is stable that has macroscopic degeneracy. The presence of these states on a non-frustrated honeycomb lattice highlights a novel phenomenon in this itinerant electron system: emergent geometrical frustra…
Frustrated itinerant ferromagnets, with non-collinear static spin structures, are an exciting class of material as their spin chirality can introduce a Berry phase in the electronic scattering and lead to exotic electronic phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). This study presents a reexamination of the magnetic properties of Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, a metallic ferromagnet, based on the 2-dimensional kagome bilayer structure. Previously thought of as a conventional ferromagnet, we show using a combination of SQUID measurements, symmetry analysis and powder neutron diffraction, that Fe$_3$Sn$_…
Magnetic skyrmions are swirling spin textures with topologically protected noncoplanarity. Recently, skyrmions with the topological number of unity have been extensively studied in both experiment and theory. We here show that a skyrmion crystal with an unusually high topological number of two is stabilized in itinerant magnets at zero magnetic field. The results are obtained for a minimal Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice by an unrestricted large-scale numerical simulation and variational calculations. We find that the topological number can be switched by a magnetic field as $2\lef…
We theoretically investigate the origin of the square-type skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets, motivated from the recent experimental finding in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ [N. D. Khanh $\mathit{et}$ $\mathit{al.}$, Nat. Nanotech. $\mathbf{15}$, 444 (2020)]. By simulated annealing for an effective spin model derived from the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice, we find that a square skyrmion crystal composed of a superposition of two spin helices is stabilized in a magnetic field by synergy between the positive biquadratic, bond-dependent anisotropic, and easy-axis anisotropic intera…
We propose a general mechanism of multiple-Q ordering with noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures in itinerant magnets. By analyzing the fourth-order perturbation with respect to the spin-charge coupling, we find that the instability toward multiple-Q ordering is caused by (d-2)-dimensional connections of the Fermi surfaces in the extended Brillouin zone by the multiple-Q wave vectors: zero(one)-dimensional point (line) connections in the two(three)-dimensional systems. The instabilities are obtained as the "fixed points" in the two-parameter flow diagram, irrespective of lattice structure…
Noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures in solids manifest themselves not only in their peculiar magnetism but also in unusual electronic and transport properties. We here report our theoretical studies of a noncoplanar order on a simple cubic lattice and its influence on the electronic structure. We show that a four-sublattice triple-Q order induces three-dimensional massless Dirac electrons at commensurate electron fillings. The Dirac state is doubly degenerate, while it splits into a pair of Weyl nodes by lifting the degeneracy by an external magnetic field; the system is turned into a W…
As discussed in several chapters of this volume, frustration leads to unconventional (insulating) ground states. On the other hand, doped holes are known to have profound effects in Mott insulators. Therefore doped frustrated systems offer the prospect of novel phases with some of the most fascinating, challenging and exotic behavior. In addition, at commensurate electron fillings and in the presence of strong (screened) Coulomb repulsion, geometrical frustration can also manifests itself as an extensive degeneracy of the classical ground-state manifold providing profound similarities with the…
We study the classical Heisenberg model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland (SS) lattice with additional Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of an external magnetic field. We show that several noncollinear and noncoplanar magnetic phases, such as the flux, all-in/all-out, 3in-1out/3out-1in, and canted-flux phases are stabilized over wide ranges of parameters in the presence of the DM interaction. We discuss the role of DM interaction in stabilizing these complex magnetic phases. When coupled to these noncoplanar magnetic phases, itinerant electrons experience …
We explore the magnetic phases in a Kondo lattice model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice at metallic electron densities, searching for noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures. Motivated by experimental observations in many rare-earth-based frustrated metallic magnets, we treat the local moments as classical spins and set the coupling between the itinerant electrons and local moments as the largest energy scale in the problem. Our results show that a noncollinear flux state is stabilized over an extended range of Hamiltonian parameters. These spin states can be quen…
These three metallic systems do not exhibit any magnetic ordering despite experiments show the existence of localized moments with large antiferromagnetic exchange: this is a consequence of the strong geometric frustration (Y(Sc)Mn_{2} and LiV_{2}O_{4} have the Pyrochlore structure, while beta-Mn has a more complicated frustrated structure). Another common feature is their very large specific heat coefficient γ=C/T (420 mJ mole^{-1} K^{-2} for LiV_{2}O_{4}). Several explanations have been proposed for this ''3d heavy fermion behavior'', including a 3d-Kondo effect. However the similarities bet…
Magnetic domain walls, which are crucially important in both fundamental physics and technical applications, often have a preference in their form due to many different origins, such as the crystalline shape, lattice symmetry, and magnetic anisotropy. We theoretically investigate yet another origin stemming from the coupling to mobile charges in itinerant magnets. Performing a large-scale numerical simulation in a minimal model for itinerant magnets, i.e., the Kondo lattice model with classical localized spins, we show that the shape of magnetic domain walls depends on the electronic band stru…
We theoretically study noncoplanar spin textures in polar magnetic conductors. Starting from the Kondo lattice model with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we derive an effective spin model with generalized Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions including the anisotropic and antisymmetric exchange interactions. By performing simulated annealing for the effective model, we find that a vortex crystal of Néel type is stabilized even in the absence of a magnetic field. Moreover, we demonstrate that a Bloch-type vortex crystal, which is usually associated with the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling,…
We report the results of magnetic, heat-capacity, electrical and magnetoresistance measurements on Ho4RhAl and Er4RhAl, characterized by 3 sites for rare-earths (R). Antiferromagnetic ordering sets in at (T_N =) about 8.8 and 4.0 K respectively. While Ho compound appears to enter into a complex spin-glass phase at T less thanT_N (at nearly 5 K), spin-glass component appears to set in essentially almost at T_N for the Er case. The loss of the spin-disorder contribution in the magnetically ordered state is not pronounced, mimicking that in Gd2PdSi3, a compound which now attracts interest in the …
We prove that Nagaoka's theorem, that the large-$U$ Hubbard model with exactly one hole is ferromagnetic, holds for any balanced Hamiltonian. Simply put, if a positive bond encodes friendship and a negative bond encodes enmity, then balance implies when that enemy of one's enemy is one's friend. We argue that, in itinerant electron systems, a balanced Hamiltonian, rather than bipartite lattice, defines an unfrustrated system. The proof is valid for multi-orbital models with arbitrary two-orbital interactions provided that no exchange interactions are antiferromagnetic: a class of models includ…
A mutual interplay between the charge and spin degrees of freedom in itinerant magnets leads to a plethora of topological spin textures, such as magnetic skyrmion and vortex crystals, in both centrosymmetric and noncentrosymmetric hosts. Meanwhile, their stabilization has been extensively studied in the system including the classical localized spins. We here study a realization of the skyrmion crystal in the centrosymmetric triangular-lattice Hubbard model, where the itinerant nature of electrons plays a more significant role. By performing the self-consistent mean-field calculations, we find …
We report our numerical results for the effect of magnetic anisotropy on a Skyrmion crystal with a high topological number of two, which was recently discovered in an itinerant electron model [R. Ozawa, S. Hayami, and Y. Motome, Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 147205 (2017)]. By performing numerical simulations based on the kernel polynomial method and the Langevin dynamics for the Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice, we find that the topological property remains robust against the single-ion anisotropy, while the magnetic texture is deformed continuously. The resultant spin structure is charact…
The realization of magnetic frustration in a metallic van der Waals (vdW) coupled material has been sought as a promising platform to explore novel phenomena both in bulk matter and in exfoliated devices. However, a suitable material platform has been lacking so far. Here, we demonstrate that CeSiI hosts itinerant electrons coexisting with exotic magnetism. In CeSiI, the magnetic cerium atoms form a triangular bilayer structure sandwiched by van der Waals stacked iodine layers. From resistivity and magnetometry measurements, we confirm the coexistence of itinerant electrons with magnetism with…
It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that the spin chirality associated with a noncoplanar spin configuration produces a magneto-optical effect. Numerical study of the two-band Hubbard model on a triangle cluster shows that the optical Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ is proportional to the spin chirality. The detailed comparative experiments on pyrochlore-type molybdates $R_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ with $R=$Nd (Ising-like moments) and $R=$Gd (Heisenberg-like ones) clearly distinguishes the two mechanisms, i.e., spin chirality and spin-orbit interactions. It is concluded that for $R$=Nd,…
Magnetic frustration in metals is scarce and hard to pinpoint, but exciting due to the possibility of the emergence of fascinating novel phases. The cubic intermetallic compound HoInCu$_4$ with all holmium atoms on an fcc lattice, exhibits partial magnetic frustration, yielding a ground state where half of the Ho moments remain without long-range order, as evidenced by our neutron scattering experiments. The substitution of In with Cd results in HoCdCu$_4$ in a full breakdown of magnetic frustration. Consequently we found a fully ordered magnetic structure in our neutron diffraction experiment…
Geometrical frustration describes situations where interactions are incompatible with the lattice geometry and stabilizes exotic phases such as spin liquids. Whether geometrical frustration of magnetic interactions in metals can induce unconventional quantum critical points is an active area of research. We focus on the hexagonal heavy fermion metal CeRhSn where the Kondo ions are located on distorted kagome planes stacked along the c axis. Low-temperature specific heat, thermal expansion and magnetic Grüneisen parameter measurements prove a zero-field quantum critical point. The linear therma…

The Hubbard model in the Heisenberg limit is studied by Kondo-lattice theory. The Kondo temperature T_K or k_BT_K, which is an energy scale of low-energy local quantum spin fluctuations, is enhanced by the resonating valence bond (RVB) mechanism, so that T_K\simeq T_MF/(2D), where T_MF is the Neel temperature in the mean-field approximation of the corresponding Heisenberg model and D is the spatial dimensionality. Electrons certainly behave as localized spins at T\gg T_K, but they are still itinerant at T\ll T_K unless an antiferromagnetic complete gap opens. When the Neel temperature T_N is s…
We investigate the necessary conditions for the emergence of complex, noncoplanar magnetic configurations in a Kondo lattice model with classical local moments on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice and their evolution in an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that topologically nontrivial spin textures, including a new canted flux state, with nonzero scalar chirality arise dynamically from realistic short-range interactions. Our results establish that a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is necessary for the emergence of these novel magnetic states when the …
Non-trivial spin structures in itinerant magnets can give rise to topological Hall effect (THE) due to the interacting local magnetic moments and conductive electrons. While, in series of materials, THE has mostly been observed at low temperatures far below room temperature (RT) limiting its potential applications. Here, we report the anisotropic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) near RT in LaMn2Ge2, a noncollinear ferromagnetic (FM) with Curie temperature TC=325 K. Large topological Hall resistivity of ~1.0 10-6 ohmcm in broad temperature range (190 K <T< 300 K) is realized as field (H) parallel to…
Applying linear response and the magnetic force theorem in correlated density functional theory, the inter-sublattice exchange constants of antiferromagnetic Eu are calculated and found to vanish near the pressure of P$_c$=82 GPa, just where magnetic order is observed experimentally to be lost. The Eu $4f^7$ moment remains unchanged at high pressure, again in agreement with spectroscopic measurements, leaving the picture of perfect frustration of interatomic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida couplings in a broad metallic background, leaving a state of electrons strongly exchange coupled to arbitr…
The crossover from localized- to itinerant-electron behavior is associated with many intriguing phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this paper, we investigate the crossover from localized to itinerant regimes in the spinel system Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_4$. At low Co doping, orbital order (OO) of the localized electrons on the V3+ ions suppresses magnetic frustration by triggering a tetragonal distortion. With Co doping, electronic itinerancy melts the OO and suppresses the structural phase transition while the reduced spin-lattice coupling produces magnetic frustration. Neutron scatteri…
We study the transport properties of frustrated itinerant magnets comprising localized {\it classical} moments, which interact via exchange with the conduction electrons. Strong frustration stabilizes a liquidlike spin state, which extends down to temperatures well below the effective Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction scale. The crossover into this state is characterized by spin structure factor enhancement at wave vectors smaller than twice the Fermi wave vector magnitude. The corresponding enhancement of electron scattering generates a resistivity upturn at decreasing temperatures.
We study the interplay between magnetic frustration and itinerant electrons. For example, how does the coupling to mobile charges modify the properties of a spin liquid, and does the underlying frustration favor insulating or conducting states? Supported by Monte Carlo simulations, our goal is in particular to provide an analytical picture of the mechanisms involved. The models under considerations exhibit Coulomb phases in two and three dimensions, where the itinerant electrons are coupled to the localized spins via double exchange interactions. Because of the Hund coupling, magnetic loops na…
We investigate how to engineer an antisymmetric spin-split band structure under spin density waves with finite ordering wave vectors in centrosymmetric systems without the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. On the basis of a perturbative analysis for the spin-charge coupled model in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets, we show that nonzero chiral-type bilinear and biquadratic spin cross products in momentum space under the magnetic orderings are related to an antisymmetric spin polarization in the electronic band structure. We apply the derived formula to the single-$Q$ cycloidal spiral and doubl…
We report on a ternary intermetallic compound, "YMn2Zn20", comprising a pyrochlore lattice made of Mn atoms. A series of In-doped single crystals undergo no magnetic long-range order down to 0.4 K, in spite of the fact that the Mn atom carries a local magnetic moment at high temperatures, showing Curie-Weiss magnetism. However, In-rich crystals exhibit spin-glass transitions at approximately 10 K due to a disorder arising from the substitution, while, with decreasing In content, the spin-glass transition temperature is reduced to 1 K. Then, heat capacity divided by temperature approaches a lar…
The intermetallic compound Nd$_2$Co$_{0.85}$Si$_{2.88}$ having a triangular lattice could be synthesized in single-phase only with defect crystal structure. Investigation through different experimental techniques indicate the presence of two magnetic transitions in the system. As verified experimentally and theoretically, the high-temperature transition T$_H$ ~ 140 K is associated with the development of ferromagnetic interaction between itinerant Co moments, whereas the low-temperature transition at T$_L$ ~ 6.5 K is due to the coupling among Nd-4f and Co-3d moments, which is antiferromagnetic…
Motivated by the iron-based superconductors, we develop a self-consistent electronic theory for the itinerant spin excitations in the regime of coexistence of the antiferromagnetic stripe order with wavevector ${\bf Q}_{1} = (π,0)$ and $s^{+-}$ superconductivity. The onset of superconductivity leads to the appearance of a {\em magnetic} resonance near the wavevector ${\bf Q}_{2} = (0,π)$ where magnetic order is absent. This resonance is isotropic in spin space, unlike the excitations near ${\bf Q}_{1}$ where the magnetic Goldstone mode resides. We discuss several features which can be observed…
We report the electronic and magnetic behaviour of the frustrated triangular metallic antiferromagnet 2H-AgNiO2 in high magnetic fields (54 T) using thermodynamic and transport measurements. Here localized d electrons are arranged on an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice nested inside a honeycomb lattice with itinerant d electrons. When the magnetic field is along the easy axis we observe a cascade of field-induced transitions, attributed to the competition between easy-axis anisotropy, geometrical frustration and coupling of the localized and itinerant system. The quantum oscillations data …
CaCo$_{2-y}$As$_2$ is an unusual itinerant magnet with signatures of extreme magnetic frustration. The conditions for establishing magnetic order in such itinerant frustrated magnets, either by reducing frustration or increasing electronic correlations, is an open question. Here we use results from inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility measurements and density functional theory calculations to show that hole doping in Ca(Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$)$_{2-y}$As$_{2}$ suppresses magnetic order by quenching the magnetic moment while maintaining the same level of magnetic frustration. The…
The magnetic hedgehog lattice (HL) is a noncoplanar magnetic texture with a periodic array of magnetic monopoles and anti-monopoles. Despite phenomenological and numerical studies thus far, there remain open issues on the microscopic origin, especially with respect to the recent experimental findings of two different types of HLs even at zero magnetic field. Here, we study the stability of the HLs for an effective spin model with long-range interactions arising from itinerant nature of electrons. By variational calculations and simulated annealing, we find that the HLs are stabilized in the gr…
