M31 and M33 serve as ideal places to study distributions of dust in the outskirts of spiral galaxies. In this letter, using about 0.2 million stars selected from the LAMOST data and combining precise photometry and parallaxes from the Gaia DR2, we have constructed a two-dimensional foreground dust reddening map towards the M31 and M33 region ($111.2° {\le} gl {\le} 136.2°, -36.5° {\le} gb {\le} -16.5°$). The map has a typical spatial resolution of about 12 arc-minute and precision of 0.01 mag. The complex structure of dust clouds towards the M31 is revealed. By carefully removing the foreground extinction from the dust reddening map of Schlegel et al. (1998), we thus have obtained a residual map to study dust distributions in the outskirts of M31 and M33. A large amount of dust is detected in the M31 halo out to a distance of over 100 kpc. Dust in the M31 disk is found to extend out to about 2.5 times its optical radius, whose distribution is consistent with either an exponential disk of scale length of 7.2 kpc or two disks with scale length of 11.1 kpc within its optical radius and 18.3 kpc beyond its optical radius. Dust in the disk of M33 is also found to extend out to about 2.5 times its optical radius, its distribution beyond one optical radius is consistent with an exponential disk of scale length of 5.6 kpc. Our results provide new clues on the distributions and cycling of dust in galaxies.
We present HI and radio continuum, narrow-band H$α$ imaging, IFU spectroscopy, and X-ray observations of the FGC 1287 triplet projected $\sim$ 1.8 Mpc west of the galaxy cluster Abell 1367. One triplet member, FGC 1287, displays an exceptionally long, 250 kpc HI tail and an unperturbed stellar disk which are the typical signatures of ram pressure stripping (RPS). To generate detectable RPS signatures the presence of an Intra-cluster medium (ICM)/intra-group medium (IGM) with sufficient density to produce RPS at a realistic velocity relative to the ICM/IGM is a prerequisite. However, XMM-Newton…
By including the most recent observations of HI 21-cm absorption through near-by galactic disks, we confirm our previous assertion that there is an anti-correlation between the abundance of cool neutral atomic gas and impact parameter. Comparing the measured neutral hydrogen column densities of the sample with the absorption strength, we find a peak in the mean spin temperature of ~2310 K at an impact parameter of ~ 14 kpc, with > 1000 K in the remainder of the disk. This is significantly different to the spin temperature distribution in the Milky Way, which exhibits a constant ~ 250 - 400 K o…
The currently known Galactic globular cluster population extends out to a maximum galactocentric distance of $\sim$ 145 kpc, with the peculiarity that the outermost clusters predominantly have an inward velocity. Orbit averaging finds that this configuration occurs by chance about $6\%$ of the time, suggesting that several globular clusters with positive radial velocities remain undiscovered. We evaluate the expected number of undiscovered clusters at large distances under the assumption that the cluster population has a smooth radial distribution and is in equilibrium within the Milky Way's v…
This paper reports detections of H$α$ emission and stellar continuum out to approximately 30 physical kpc, and H$α$ directionality in the outskirts of H$α$-emitting galaxies (H$α$ emitters) at $z=0.4$. This research adopts narrow-band selected H$α$ emitters at $z=0.4$ from the emission-line object catalog by Hayashi et al. (2020), which is based on data in the Deep and Ultradeep layers of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. Deep narrow- and broad-band images of 8625 H$α$ emitters across 16.8 deg$^2$ enable us to construct deep composite emission-line and continuum images. The stack…
Neutral gas is commonly believed to dominate over stars in the outskirts of galaxies, and investigations of the disk-halo interface are generally considered to be in the domain of radio astronomy. This may simply be a consequence of the fact that deep HI observations typically probe to a lower mass surface density than visible wavelength data. This paper presents low surface brightness optimized visible wavelength observations of the extreme outskirts of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2841. We report the discovery of an enormous low-surface brightness stellar disk in this object. When azimuthall…
We present chemical abundances and velocities of five stars between 0.3 kpc to 1.1 kpc from the center of the Tucana II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD) from high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy. We find that every star is deficient in metals (-3.6 < [Fe/H] < -1.9) and in neutron-capture elements as is characteristic of UFD stars, unambiguously confirming their association with Tucana II. Other chemical abundances (e.g., C, iron-peak) largely follow UFD trends and suggest that faint core-collapse supernovae (SNe) dominated the early evolution of Tucana II. We see a downturn in [$α$/Fe] at …

We investigate how the dust temperature is affected by local environmental quantities, especially dust surface density ($Σ_\mathrm{dust}$), dust-to-gas ratio (D/G) and interstellar radiation field. We compile multi-wavelength observations in 46 nearby galaxies, uniformly processed with a common physical resolution of $2~$kpc. A physical dust model is used to fit the infrared dust emission spectral energy distribution (SED) observed with WISE and Herschel. The star formation rate (SFR) is traced with GALEX ultraviolet data corrected by WISE infrared. We find that the dust temperature correlates…

Recent observations of our neighbouring galaxy M31 have revealed that its disk was shaped by widespread events. The evidence for this includes the high dispersion ($V/σ$ $\le$ 3) of stars older than 2 Gyr, and a global star formation episode, 2-4 Gyr ago. Using the modern hydrodynamical code, GIZMO, we have performed 300 high-resolution simulations to explore the extent to which these observed properties can be explained by a single merger. We find that the observed M31 disk resembles models having experienced a 4:1 merger, in which the nuclei coalesced 1.8-3 Gyr ago, and where the first passa…

Context: Planetary nebulae (PNe) are excellent tracers of stellar populations with low surface brightness, and therefore provide a powerful method to detect and explore the rich system of substructures discovered around the main spiral galaxies of the Local Group. Aims: We searched the outskirts of the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 (the Triangulum) for PNe to gain new insights into the extended stellar substructure on the northern side of the disc and to study the existence of a faint classical halo. Methods: The search is based on wide field imaging covering a 4.5 square degree area out to a …
We perform a homogeneous analysis of an unprecedented set of spatially resolved scaling relations (SRs) between ISM components and other properties in the range of scales 0.3-3.4 kpc. We also study some ratios: dust-to-stellar, dust-to-gas, and dust-to-metal. We use a sample of 18 large, spiral, face-on DustPedia galaxies. All the SRs are moderate/strong correlations except the dust-HI SR that does not exist or is weak for most galaxies. The SRs do not have a universal form but each galaxy is characterized by distinct correlations, affected by local processes and galaxy peculiarities. The SRs …
Gaia data are revolutionizing our knowledge of the evolutionary history of the Milky Way. 3D maps of the interstellar dust provide complementary information and are a tool for a wide range of uses. We aimed at building 3D maps of the dust in the Local arm and surrounding regions. To do so, Gaia DR2 photometric data were combined with 2MASS measurements to derive extinction towards stars that possess accurate photometry and relative uncertainties on DR2 parallaxes smaller than 20\%. We applied to the extinctions a new hierarchical inversion algorithm adapted to large datasets and to a inhomogen…
Recent studies have shown that galaxies at cosmic noon are redder in the center and bluer in the outskirts, mirroring results in the local universe. These color gradients could be caused by either gradients in the stellar age or dust opacity; however, distinguishing between these two causes is impossible with rest-frame optical photometry alone. Here we investigate the underlying causes of the gradients from spatially-resolved rest-frame $U-V$ vs. $V-J$ color-color diagrams, measured from early observations with the James Webb Space Telescope. We use $1\, μm - 4\, μm$ NIRCam photometry from th…
We present new, spatially resolved [CI]1-0, [CI]2-1, CO(7-6), and dust continuum observations of 4C 41.17 at $z=3.8$ obtained with the IRAM NOEMA interferometer. This is one of the best-studied radio galaxies in this epoch and is arguably the best candidate of jet-triggered star formation at high redshift currently known in the literature. 4C 41.17 shows a narrow ridge of dust continuum extending over 15 kpc near the radio jet axis. Line emission is found within the galaxy in the region with signatures of positive feedback. Using the [CI]1-0 line as a molecular gas tracer, and multifrequency o…
We examine the three-dimensional structure and dust extinction properties in a ~ 200 pc $\times$ 100 pc region in the southwest bar of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We model a deep Hubble Space Telescope optical color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of red clump and red giant branch stars to infer the dust extinction and galactic structure. We model the distance distribution of the stellar component with a Gaussian and find a centroid distance of 65.2 kpc (distance modulus $μ$ = 19.07 mag) with a FWHM $\approx$ 11.3 kpc. This large extent along the line of sight reproduces results from previous st…
Three-dimensional (3D) maps of Galactic interstellar dust are a tool for a wide range of uses. We aim to construct 3D maps of dust extinction in the Local Arm and surrounding regions. Gaia EDR3 photometric data were combined with 2MASS measurements to derive extinction towards stars with accurate photometry and relative uncertainties on parallaxes of less than 20%. We applied our hierarchical inversion algorithm adapted to inhomogeneous spatial distributions of target stars to this catalogue of extinctions. We present the updated 3D dust extinction distribution and provide an estimate of the e…
Submillimeter rotational lines of H2O are a powerful probe in warm gas regions of the ISM, tracing scales and structures ranging from kpc disks to the most compact and dust-obscured regions of galactic nuclei. The ortho-H2O(423-330) line at 448 GHz, which was recently detected in a local luminous infrared galaxy (Pereira-Santaella et al. 2017), offers a unique constraint on the excitation conditions and ISM properties in deeply buried galaxy nuclei since the line requires high far-IR optical depths to be excited. In this letter, we report the first high-redshift detection of the 448 GHz H2O(42…
We report the discovery of 10-kpc scale [CII] 158um halos surrounding star-forming galaxies in the early Universe. We choose deep ALMA data of 18 galaxies each with a star-formation rate of ~ 10-70 Msun with no signature of AGN whose [CII] lines are individually detected at z=5.153-7.142, and conduct stacking of the [CII] lines and dust-continuum in the uv-visibility plane. The radial profiles of the surface brightnesses show a 10-kpc scale [CII] halo at the 9.2sigma level significantly extended more than the HST stellar continuum data by a factor of ~5 on the exponential-profile basis, as wel…

Massive star formation occurs in the interior of giant molecular clouds (GMC) and proceeds through many stages. In this work, we focus on massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and Ultra-Compact HII regions (UCHII), where the former are enshrouded in dense envelopes of dust and gas, which the latter have begun dispersing. By selecting a complete sample of MYSOs and UCHII from the Red MSX Source (RMS) survey data base, we combine Planck and IRAS data and build their Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs). With these, we estimate the physical properties (dust temperatures, mass, luminosity) of the …

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) continuum observations of a sample of nine star-forming galaxies at redshifts 1.47 and 2.23 selected from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). Four galaxies in our sample are detected at high significance by ALMA at a resolution of 0.25'' at rest-frame 355 $μ$m. Together with the previously observed H$α$ emission, from adaptive optics-assisted integral-field-unit spectroscopy (0.15'' resolution), and F606W and F140W imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope (0.2'' resolution), we study the star-formation activity, stellar and …
We present results obtained from ALMA CO (2-1) data of the double-barred galaxy NGC 3504. With three times higher angular resolution (~ 0."8) than previous studies, our observations reveal an inner molecular gas bar, a nuclear ring, and four inner spiral arm-like structures in the central 1 kpc region. Furthermore, the CO emission is clearly aligned with the two dust lanes in the outer bar region, with differences in shape and intensity between them. The total molecular gas mass in the observed region (50"x57") is estimated to be $\sim 3.1\times 10^9 \, {\rm M}_{\odot}$, which is 17 per cent o…
A panchromatic view of the star forming ring and feeding process in the central kpc of the galaxy NGC 1097 is presented. The assembled IR to UV images at $\sim$10 pc resolution allow us to characterise the population of circa 250 clusters in the ring and disentangle the network of filaments of dust and gas that enshroud and feed them. The ring is a place of intermittent star bursts over the last 100 Myr. Four major episodes covering a proto-cluster phase of eleven mid-IR sources at the molecular clouds core, and two (three) previous bursts with a time separation of 20 - 30 Myr are identified. …
We present the optical linear polarization observation of stars towards the core of the Czernik 3 cluster in the Sloan i-band. The data were obtained using the EMPOL instrument on the 1.2 m telescope at Mount Abu Observatory. We study the dust distribution towards this cluster by combining the results from our polarization observations with the data from Gaia EDR3, WISE, and the HI, $^{12}$CO surveys. In addition, we use the polarimetric data of previously studied clusters within 15$^\circ$ of Czernik 3 to understand the large scale dust distribution. The observational results of Czernik 3 sho…
HST/ACS observations along the major axis of M33 show that the mean age of its stars decreases with increasing distance from the galaxy center. Such a behavior is consistent with an inside-out growth of the disc. However, in the outermost observed field, at r$\simeq$11.6 kpc, a reversal of this gradient is detected, with old stars found in high percentages beyond this radius. In this work we investigate the origin of such a reversal in stellar age gradient, by using a simulated M33 analogue from the Constrained Local UniversE Simulations (CLUES). The simulated M33 is similar to the observed on…
The X-ray regime is a largely underused resource for constraining interstellar dust grain models and improving our understanding of the physical processes that dictate how grains evolve over their lifetimes. This is mostly due to current detectors' relatively low sensitivity and high background, limiting the targets to the brightest sources. The improved sensitivity of the next generation of X-ray detectors will allow studies of much fainter sources, at much higher angular resolution, expanding our sampled sightlines in both quality and quantity.

We calibrate commonly used star formation rate (SFR) prescriptions using observations in five kpc-sized fields in the nearby galaxy Andromeda (M31) at 10\,pc spatial resolution. Our observations at different scales enable us to resolve the star-forming regions and to distinguish them from non star-forming components. We use extinction corrected H$α$ from optical integral field spectroscopy as our reference tracer and have verified its reliability via tests. It is used to calibrate monochromatic and hybrid (H$α$+a$\times$IR and FUV+b$\times$IR) SFR prescriptions, which use FUV (GALEX), 22\,$μ$m…
Knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of Galactic molecular clouds is important for understanding how clouds are affected by processes such as turbulence and magnetic fields and how this structure effects star formation within them. Great progress has been made in this field with the arrival of the Gaia mission, which provides accurate distances to $\sim10^{9}$ stars. Combining these distances with extinctions inferred from optical-IR, we recover the three-dimensional structure of 16 Galactic molecular cloud complexes at $\sim1$pc resolution using our novel three-dimensional dust mappin…
We resolve the host galaxies of seven gravitationally lensed quasars at redshift 1.5 to 2.8 using observations with the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimetre Array. Using a visibility-plane lens modelling technique, we create pixellated reconstructions of the dust morphology, and CO line morphology and kinematics. We find that the quasar hosts in our sample can be distinguished into two types: 1) galaxies characterised by clumpy, extended dust distributions ($R_{\rm eff}\sim2$ kpc) and mean star formation rate surface densities comparable to sub-mm-selected dusty star-forming galaxies ($Σ_{\rm SFR}\s…
We obtained an axi-symmetric model for the large-scale distribution of stars and dust in the Milky Way (MW) using a radiative transfer code that can account for the existing near-infrared (NIR)/mid-infrared/submm all-sky emission maps of our Galaxy. We find that the MW has a star-formation rate of ${ SFR}=1.25\pm0.2\,{ M}_{\odot}$/yr, a stellar mass $M_{*}=(4.9\pm 0.3)\times10^{10}\,{ M}_{\odot}$, and a specific SFR that is relatively constant with radius (except for the inner 1 kpc). We identified an inner radius $R_{ in}= 4.5$\,kpc beyond which the stellar emissivity and dust distribution fa…
