In polymer melts, the interaction between segments are considered to be screened and the ideal Gaussian chain statistics is recovered. The experimental fact that linear viscoelasticity of unentangled polymers can be well described by the Rouse model is naively considered as due to this screening effect. Although various theoretical models are based on the screening effect and the screening effect is believed to be reasonable, the screening effect cannot be fully justified on a solid theoretical basis. In this work, we study the screening effect by utilizing a simple dumbbell type model. We perform simulations for dumbbell systems in which particles interact via the Gaussian soft-core potential. We show that, if the density of dumbbells is high, the Gaussian soft-core interaction is actually screened and the static structures are well described by the ideal model without Gaussian soft-core interaction. We also show that the relaxation moduli of interacting dumbbell systems approximately coincide to those of the non-interacting dumbbell systems. In the low density systems, we observe the deviations from the ideal non-interacting systems. For example, the relaxation moduli become relatively broad. However, the relaxation moduli of such systems can be decomposed into the relaxation modes by the Gaussian soft-core interaction and the bond. The bond relaxation mode can be successfully described by a single Maxwell relaxation with effective relaxation strength and time. Our results support a naive use of the Rouse model to analyze unentangled polymer melts.
The overdamped (inertialess) dumbbell model is widely utilized to study rheological properties of polymers or other soft matters. In most cases, the effect of inertia is merely neglected because the momentum relaxation is much faster than the bond relaxation. We theoretically analyze the effect of inertia on the linear viscoelasticity of the harmonic dumbbell model. We show that the momentum and bond relaxation modes are kinetically coupled and the inertia can affect the bond relaxation if the momentum relaxation is not sufficiently fast. We derive an overdamped Langevin equation for the dumbb…
Two alternative routes are taken to derive, on the basis of the dynamics of a finite number of dumbbells, viscoelasticity in terms of a conformation tensor with fluctuations. The first route is a direct approach using stochastic calculus only, and it serves as a benchmark for the second route, which is guided by thermodynamic principles. In the latter, the Helmholtz free energy and a generalized relaxation tensor play a key role. It is shown that the results of the two routes agree only if a finite-size contribution to the Helmholtz free energy of the conformation tensor is taken into account.…
We show the linear response theory of spatial-scale-dependent relaxation moduli for overdamped Brownian particle systems. We employ the Irving-Kirkwood stress tensor field as the microscopic stress tensor field. We show that the scale-dependent relaxation modulus tensor, which characterizes the response of the stress tensor field to the applied velocity gradient field, can be expressed by using the correlation function of the Irving-Kirkwood stress tensor field. The spatial Fourier transform of the relaxation modulus tensor gives the wavenumber-dependent relaxation modulus. For isotropic and h…
We use numerical simulations to study the phase behavior of a system of purely repulsive soft dumbbells as a function of size ratio of the two components and their relative degree of deformability. We find a plethora of different phases which includes most of the mesophases observed in self-assembly of block copolymers, but also crystalline structures formed by asymmetric, hard binary mixtures. Our results detail the phenomenological behavior of these systems when softness is introduced in terms of two different classes of inter-particle interactions: (a) the elastic Hertz potential, that has …
Using molecular dynamics we investigate the thermodynamics, dynamics and structure of 250 diatomic molecules interacting by a core-softened potential. This system exhibits thermodynamics, dynamics and structural anomalies: a maximum in density-temperature plane at constante pressure and maximum and minimum points in the diffusivity and translational order parameter against density at constant temperature. Starting with very dense systems and decreasing density the mobility at low temperatures first increases, reach a maximum, then decreases, reach a minimum and finally increases. In the pressu…
We introduce a comprehensive scheme to physically quantify both viscous and elastic rheological nonlinearities simultaneously, using an imposed large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) strain. The new framework naturally lends a physical interpretation to commonly reported Fourier coefficients of the nonlinear stress response. Additionally, we address the ambiguities inherent in the standard definitions of viscoelastic moduli when extended into the nonlinear regime, and define new measures which reveal behavior that is obscured by conventional techniques.
Characterizing the softness of deformable materials having partial elastic and partial viscous behaviour via soft lubrication experiments has emerged as a versatile and robust methodology in recent times. However, a straightforward extension of the classical elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory that is commonly employed for characterizing elastic materials turns out to be rather inadequate in explaining the response of such viscoelastic materials subjected to dynamic loading conditions, despite adhering to a mathematically acceptable framework via the complex Young's modulus as a material pro…
For applications of pulmonary surfactant delivery to the lungs, the question of rheology of the existing clinical formulations is of upmost importance. Recently, Ciutara and Zasadsinky (Soft Matter, 2021, 17, 5170-5182) measured the rheological properties of Infasurf, Survanta and Curosurf, three of the most used pulmonary surfactant substitutes. This study revealed that these fluids are shear-thinning and characterized by a yield stress. The results obtained by Ciutara et al. on Curosurf differ from our results published in Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces, 2019, 178, 337-345 and in ACS…
Soft tissues are complex media, they display a wide range of mechanical properties such as anisotropy and non-linear stress-strain behaviour. They undergo large deformations and they exhibit a time-dependent mechanical behaviour, i.e. they are viscoelastic. In this chapter we review the foundations of the linear viscoelastic theory and the theory of Quasi-Linear Viscoelasticity (QLV) in view of developing new methods to estimate the viscoelastic properties of soft tissues through model fitting. To this aim, we consider the simple torsion of a viscoelastic Mooney-Rivlin material in two differen…
Owing to lack of time translational invariance, aging soft glassy materials do not obey fundamental principles of linear viscoelasticity. We show that by transforming the linear viscoelastic framework from the real time domain to the effective time domain, wherein the material clock is readjusted to account for evolution of relaxation time, the soft glassy materials obey effective time translational invariance. Consequently, we demonstrate successful validation of principles of linear viscoelasticity (Boltzmann superposition principle and convolution relation for creep compliance and stress re…
The effects of viscoelasticity on the dynamics and break-up of fluid threads in microfluidic T-junctions are investigated using numerical simulations of dilute polymer solutions at changing the Capillary number ($\mbox {Ca}$), i.e. at changing the balance between the viscous forces and the surface tension at the interface, up to $\mbox{Ca} \approx 3 \times 10^{-2}$. A Navier-Stokes (NS) description of the solvent based on the lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) is here coupled to constitutive equations for finite extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with the closure proposed by Peterlin (FENE-P …
Using molecular dynamics we studied the role of the anisotropy on the phase boundary and on the anomalous behavior of 250 dimeric particles interacting by a core-softened potential. This study led us to an unexpected result: the introduction of a rather small anisotropy, quantified by the distance between the particles inside each dimer, leads to the increase of the size of the regions in the pressure-temperature phase diagram of anomalies when compared to the isotropic monomeric case. However, as the anisotropy increases beyond a threshold the anomalous regions shrinks. We found that this beh…
We investigate the dynamics of a phase-separating binary fluid, containing colloidal dumbbells anchored to the fluid-fluid interface. Extensive Lattice Boltzmann-Immersed Boundary method simulations reveal that the presence of soft dumbbells can significantly affect the curvature dynamics of the interface between phase-separating fluids, even though the coarsening dynamics is left nearly unchanged. In addition, our results show that the curvature dynamics exhibits distinct non-local effects, which might be exploited for the design of new soft mesoscale materials. We point out that the inspecti…
This is an integrated experimental and theoretical study of the dynamics and rheology of self-crosslinked, slightly charged, temperature responsive soft Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) microgels over a wide range of concentration and temperature spanning the sharp change in particle size and intermolecular interactions across the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Dramatic, non-monotonic changes in viscoelasticity are observed with temperature, with distinctive concentration dependences in the dense fluid, glassy, and soft-jammed states. Motivated by our experimental observations…
We describe a high-resolution, high-bandwidth technique for determining the local viscoelasticity of soft materials such as polymer gels. Loss and storage shear moduli are determined from the power spectra of thermal fluctuations of embedded micron-sized probe particles, observed with an interferometric microscope. This provides a passive, small-amplitude measurement of rheological properties over a much broader frequency range than previously accessible to microrheology. We study both F-actin biopolymer solutions and polyacrylamide (PAAm) gels, as model semiflexible and flexible systems, resp…
Originating in the field of biomechanics, Fung's model of quasi-linear viscoelasticity (QLV) is one of the most popular constitutive theories employed to compute the time-dependent relationship between stress and deformation in soft solids. It is one of the simplest models of nonlinear viscoelasticity, based on a time-domain integral formulation. In the present study, we consider the QLV model incorporating a single scalar relaxation function. We provide natural internal variables of state, as well as a consistent expression of the free energy to illustrate the thermodynamic consistency of thi…
Polymer gels behave as soft viscoelastic solids and exhibit a generic nonlinear mechanical response characterized by pronounced stiffening prior to irreversible failure, most often through macroscopic fractures. Here, we aim at capturing the latter scenario for a protein gel using a nonlinear integral constitutive equation built upon ($i$) the linear viscoelastic response of the gel, here well described by a power-law relaxation modulus, and ($ii$) the nonlinear viscoelastic properties of the gel, encoded into a "damping function". Such formalism predicts quantitatively the gel mechanical resp…
This second part of paper develops a theory of linear viscoelastic nematodynamics applicable to LCP. The viscous and elastic nematic components in theory are described by using the LEP approach for viscous nematics and de Gennes free energy for weakly elastic nematic elastomers. The case of applied external magnetic field exemplifies the occurrence of non-symmetric stresses. In spite of multi- (10) parametric character of the theory, the use of nematic operators presents it in an elegant form. When the magnetic field is absent, the theory is simplified for symmetric case with 6 parameters, and…
Computer simulations of bi-continuous two-phase fluids with intersparsed dumbbells show that, unlike rigid colloids, soft dumbbells do not lead to arrested coarsening. However, they significantly alter the curvature dynamics of the fluid-fluid interface, whose probability density distributions are shown to exhibit (i) a universal spontaneous transition from an initial broad-shape distribution towards a highly localized one and (ii) super-diffusive dynamics with long-range effects. Both features may prove useful for the design of novel families of soft porous materials.
When weakly jammed packings of soft, viscous, non-Brownian spheres are probed mechanically, they respond with a complex admixture of elastic and viscous effects. While many of these effects are understood for specific, approximate models of the particles' interactions, there are a number of proposed force laws in the literature, especially for viscous interactions. We numerically measure the complex shear modulus $G^*$ of jammed packings for various viscous force laws that damp relative velocities between pairs of contacting particles or between a particle and the continuous fluid phase. We fi…
We consider gelation of colloidal particles in suspension after cessation of shear flow. Particle aggregation is driven by a temperature-tunable attractive potential which controls the growth of clusters under isothermal conditions. A series of frequency resolved time sweeps is used to systematically reconstruct the frequency dependent dynamic moduli as a function of time and temperature or attraction strength. The data display typical hallmarks of gelation with an abrupt transition from a fluid state into a dynamically arrested gel state after a characteristic gelation time $t_g$ that varies …

We have developed a new technique to measure viscoelasticity in soft materials such as polymer solutions, by monitoring thermal fluctuations of embedded probe particles using laser interferometry in a microscope. Interferometry allows us to obtain power spectra of fluctuating beads from 0.1 Hz to 20 kHz, and with sub-nanometer spatial resolution. Using linear response theory, we determined the frequency-dependent loss and storage shear moduli up to frequencies on the order of a kHz. Our technique measures local values of the viscoelastic response, without actively straining the system, and is …
We study mechanical behavior of soft rubber-like digital materials used in Polyjet multi-material 3D-printing to create deformable composite materials and flexible structures. These soft digital materials are frequently treated as linear elastic materials in the literature. However, our experiments clearly show that these materials exhibit significant non-linearities under large strain regime. Moreover, the materials demonstrate pronounced rate-dependent behavior. In particular, their instantaneous moduli as well as ultimate strain and stress significantly depend on the strain rate. To take in…
Understanding surface mechanics of soft solids, such as soft polymeric gels, is crucial in many engineering processes, such as dynamic wetting and adhesive failure. In these situations, a combination of capillary and elastic forces drives the motion, which is balanced by dissipative mechanisms to determine the rate. While shear rheology (i.e. viscoelasticity) has long been assumed to dominate the dissipation, recent works have suggested that compressibility effects (i.e. poroelasticity) could play roles in swollen networks. We use fast interferometric imaging to quantify the relaxation of surf…
We analyze theoretically the effect of friction on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements that probe soft (viscoelastic) films and biomolecular layers adsorbed from aqueous solutions. While water provides a natural environment for biomolecules, an interface with unknown rheological properties forms between the adsorbed soft molecular layer and the quartz substrate in the latter case. We investigate therefore the dynamics of soft films adsorbed onto a solid quartz surface within a continuum mechanics approach using both the Maxwell and the Voight/Kelvin models of viscoelasticity and the…
We develop a continuum theory of linear viscoelastic response in oriented monodomain nematic elastomers. The expression for dissipation function is analogous to the Leslie-Ericksen version of anisotropic nematic viscosity; we propose the relations between the anisotropic rubber moduli and new viscous coefficients. A new dimensionless number is introduced, which describes the relative magnitude of viscous and rubber-elastic torques. In an elastic medium with an independently mobile internal degree of freedom, the nematic director with its own relaxation dynamics, the model shows a dramatic decr…
The interaction between a rapidly oscillating atomic force microscope tip and a soft material surface is described using both elastic and viscous forces with a moving surface model. We derive the simplest form of this model, motivating it as a way to capture the impact dynamics of the tip and sample with an interaction consisting of two components: interfacial or surface force, and bulk or volumetric force. Analytic solutions to the piece-wise linear model identify characteristic time constants, providing a physical explanation of the hysteresis observed in the measured dynamic force quadratur…
Mixtures of polymers of varying topologies and stiffnesses display complex emergent rheological properties that often cannot be predicted from their single-component counterparts. For example, entangled blends of ring and linear polymers have been shown to exhibit enhanced shear thinning and viscosity, as well as prolonged relaxation timescales, compared to pure solutions of rings or linear chains. These emergent properties arise in part from the synergistic threading of rings by linear polymers. Topology has also been shown to play an important role in composites of flexible (e.g., DNA) and s…
We present a theory of viscoelasticity of amorphous media, which takes into account the effects of confinement along one of three spatial dimensions. The framework is based on the nonaffine extension of lattice dynamics to amorphous systems, or nonaffine response theory. The size effects due to the confinement are taken into account via the nonaffine part of the shear storage modulus $G'$. The nonaffine contribution is written as a sum over modes in $k$-space. With a rigorous argument based on the analysis of the $k$-space integral over modes, it is shown that the confinement size $L$ in one s…
We present a systematic investigation of static and dynamic properties of block copolymer micelles with crosslinked cores, representing model polymer-grafted nanoparticles, over a wide concentration range from dilute regime to an arrested (crystalline) state, by means of light and neutron scattering, complemented by linear viscoelasticity. We have followed the evolution of their scattering intensity and diffusion dynamics throughout the non-ergodicity transition and the observed results have been contrasted against appropriately coarse-grained Langevin Dynamics simulations. These stable model …
We present an analytic scheme to connect the fragility and viscoelasticity of metallic glasses to the effective ion-ion interaction in the metal. This is achieved by an approximation of the short-range repulsive part of the interaction, combined with nonaffine lattice dynamics to obtain analytical expressions for the shear modulus, viscosity, and fragility in terms of the ion-ion interaction. By fitting the theoretical model to experimental data, we are able to link the steepness of the interionic repulsion to the Thomas-Fermi screened Coulomb repulsion and to the Born-Mayer valence-electron o…

Published dielectric relaxation measurements on polypropylene glycol and 1,4-polyisoprene are analyzed to determine the relative effect that thermal energy and volume have on the temperature dependence of the normal mode relaxation times, and compare this to their effect on the temperature dependence of the local segmental relaxation times. We find that for both polymers at temperatures well above Tg, both relaxation modes are governed more by thermal energy than by volume, although the latter's contribution is not negligible. Such a result is consistent with an assumption underlying models fo…
