We theoretically show that materials with perovskite-type crystal structures provide a platform for spin current generation, taking advantage of a mechanism requiring neither the spin-orbit coupling nor a ferromagnetic moment, but is based on spin-split band structures in certain kinds of collinear antiferromagnetic states. By investigating a multiband Hubbard model for transition metal compounds by means of the Hartree-Fock approximation and the Boltzmann transport theory, we find that a pure spin current is induced by an electric field applied to a C-type antiferromagnetic metallic phase. The spin current generation originates from a cooperative effect of spatially anisotropic electron transfer integrals owing to the GdFeO$_3$-type lattice distortion, which is ubiquitous in many perovskites, and the collinear spin configuration. We discuss our finding from the symmetry point of view, in comparison with other spin current generator candidates with collinear antiferomagnetism. We also propose several ways to detect the phenomenon in candidate perovskite materials.
The evolution of spin- and orbital-ordered states has been systematically investigated for a series of insulating perovskites $R$MnO$_3$ ($R$=La,Pr,Nd,...). $R$MnO$_3$ with a large GdFeO$_3$-type distortion is regarded as a frustrated spin system having ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic (AF) next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions within a MnO$_2$ plane. The staggered orbital order associated with the GdFeO$_3$-type distortion induces the anisotropic NNN interaction, and yields the unique sinusoidal and $E$-type ("up-up-down-down") AF ordered states in the distorted perovsk…
Motivated by recent discovery of ferromagnetism in cubic perovskite BaFeO3 under small magnetic field, we investigate spin order in BaFeO3 and isostructual SrFeO3 by the first principles calculation. The on-site Coulomb and exchange interactions are necessary for the helical spin order consistent with experiments. SrFeO3 exhibits stable G-type helical order, while A- and G-type helical orders in BaFeO3 are almost degenerate at short propagating vector with tiny energetic barrier with respect to ferromagnetic spin order, explaining ferromagnetism under small field. The results are consistent wi…
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments show that spin dynamics in the charge ordered insulating ground state of the double-layer perovskite YBaFe2O5 is well described in terms of eg superexchange interactions. Above the Verwey transition at TV = 308 K, t2g double exchange-type conduction within antiferromagnetic FeO2--BaO--FeO2 double layers proceeds by an electron hopping process that requires a spin flip of the five-fold coordinated Fe ions, costing an energy 5<J>S^2 of approximately 0.1 eV. The hopping process disrupts near-neighbor spin correlations, leading to massive damping of zone-bo…
We have studied Ir spin and orbital magnetic moments in the double perovskites La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CoIrO$_6$ by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In La$_2$CoIrO$_6$, Ir$^{4+}$ couples antiferromagnetically to the weak ferromagnetic moment of the canted Co$^{2+}$ sublattice and shows an unusually large negative total magnetic moment (-0.38\,$μ_{\text B}$/f.u.) combined with strong spin-orbit interaction. In contrast, in Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$, Ir$^{5+}$ has a paramagnetic moment with almost no orbital contribution. A simple kinetic-energy-driven mechanism including spin-orbit coupling explains why Ir is …
We have investigated the electronic structure of meta-stable perovskite Ca1-xSrxIrO3 (x = 0, 0.5, and 1) thin films using transport measurements, optical spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. We artificially fabricated the perovskite phase of Ca1-xSrxIrO3, which has a hexagonal or post perovskite crystal structure in bulk form, by growing epitaxial thin films on perovskite GdScO3 substrates using epi-stabilization technique. The transport properties of the perovskite Ca1-xSrxIrO3 films systematically changed from nearly insulating (or semi-metallic) for x = 0 to bad metallic for x =…
Spin wave excitations were measured in the ferromagnetic phase of Nd$_{1/2}$Sr$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$ by neutron scattering. This compound is located in proximity to the A-type antiferromagnetic state, and it shows a clear anisotropy and anomalous softening of the spin wave excitations. The softening in the ferromagnetic phase is induced by the orbital ordering.
A remarkable hardening (~ 30 cm-1) of the normal mode of vibration associated with the symmetric stretching of the oxygen octahedra for the Ba2FeReO6 and Sr2CrReO6 double perovskites is observed below the corresponding magnetic ordering temperatures. The very large magnitude of this effect and its absence for the anti-symmetric stretching mode provide evidence against a conventional spin-phonon coupling mechanism. Our observations are consistent with a collective excitation formed by the combination of the vibrational mode with oscillations of local Fe or Cr 3d and Re 5d occupations and spin m…
Interplay of spin-orbit coupling and vibronic coupling on heavy $d^1$ site of cubic double perovskites is investigated by ab initio calculations. The stabilization energy of spin-orbital-lattice entangled states is found comparable to or larger than the exchange interactions, suggesting the presence of Jahn-Teller dynamics in the systems. In Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$, the pseudo JT coupling enhances the mixing of the ground and excited spin-orbit multiplet states, which results in strong temperature dependence of effective magnetic moments. The entanglement of the spin and lattice degrees of freedom indu…
Normally $4d$ or $5d$ transition metals are in a low-spin state. Here using first-principles calculations, we report on a rare case of a high-spin $S$=1 magnetic state for the Ag$^{3+}$ ion in the double perovskite Cs$_{2}$KAgF$_{6}$. We also explored a possibility of a conventional low-spin $S$=0 ground state and find an associated tetragonal distortion to be 0.29 Å. However, the lattice elastic energy cost and the Hund exchange loss exceed the e$_{g}$ crystal-field energy gain, thus making the low-spin tetragonal structure less favorable than the high-spin cubic structure. We conclude that t…
We formulate and study a spin-orbital model for a family of cubic double perovskites with $d^1$ ions occupying a frustrated fcc sublattice. A variational approach and a complimentary analytical analysis reveal a rich variety of phases emerging from the interplay of Hund's and spin-orbit couplings (SOC). The phase digram includes non-collinear ordered states, with or without net moment, and, remarkably, a large window of a non-magnetic disordered spin-orbit dimer phase. The present theory uncovers the physical origin of the unusual amorphous valence bond state experimentally suggested for Ba$_2…
We present a neutron powder diffraction study of the monoclinic double perovskite systems Nd2NaB'O6 (B' = Ru, Os), with magnetic atoms occupying both the A and B' sites. Our measurements reveal coupled spin ordering between the Nd and B' atoms with magnetic transition temperatures of 14 K for Nd2NaRuO6 and 16 K for Nd2NaOsO6. There is a Type I antiferromagnetic structure associated with the Ru and Os sublattices, with the ferromagnetic planes stacked along the c-axis and [110] direction respectively, while the Nd sublattices exhibit complex, canted antiferromagnetism with different spin arrang…
We introduce a microscopic model which unravels the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed phase diagram of the $R$VO$_3$ perovskites. It reveals a nontrivial interplay between superexchange, the orbital-lattice coupling due to the GdFeO$_3$-like rotations of the VO$_6$ octahedra, and orthorhombic lattice distortions. We find that the lattice strain affects the onset of the magnetic and orbital order by partial suppression of orbital fluctuations. The present approach provides also a natural explanation of the observed reduction of magnon energies from LaVO$_3$ to YVO$_3$.
The magnetic structure of Ca$_2$MnReO$_6$ double perovskite is investigated by neutron powder diffraction and bulk magnetization, showing dominant non-collinear Mn magnetic moments [$4.35(7)$ $μ_B$] that are orthogonally aligned with the small Re moments [$0.22(4)$ $μ_B$]. $Ab$-initio electronic structure calculations show that the strong spin-orbit coupling for Re $5d$ electrons combined with a relatively modest on-site Coulomb repulsion ($U_{eff}^{Re} \gtrsim 0.6$ eV) is sufficient to render this material insulating. This is a rare example of spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator outside the re…
The combined effect of electronic correlation and strong spin-orbit-coupling(SOC) can give rise to a variety of exotic quantum phases. Double perovskites provide a simple structure to study the spin-orbit-lattice entangled states. In this thesis, focusing on the 5d osmate double perovskite system, we conduct a combination of work including theoretical model simulation, first-principle calculation, and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments to understand the fundamental physical properties of this material system.
The quest for Kitaev spin liquids in particular three dimensional solids is long sought goal in condensed matter physics, as these states may give rise to exotic new types of quasi-particle excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers namely Majorana Fermionic excitations. Here we report the experimental signature of this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid via Raman measurements. Sm2ZnIrO6 is a strongly spin orbit coupled Mott insulator, where Jeff = 1/2 controls the physics, which provide striking evidence for this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid. As the temp…
The extraction of exchange parameters from measured spin-wave dispersion relations has severe limitations particularly for magnetic compounds such as the transition-metal perovskites, where the nearest-neighbor exchange parameter usually dominates the couplings between the further-distant-neighbor spins. Very precise exchange parameters beyond the nearest-neighbor spins can be obtained by neutron spectroscopic investigations of the magnetic excitation spectra of isolated multimers in magnetically diluted compounds. This is exemplified for manganese trimers in the mixed three- and two-dimension…
We present the magnetic structure of $\mathrm{TmMn_3O_6}$, solved via neutron powder diffraction - the first such study of any $R\mathrm{Mn_3O_6}$ A-site columnar-ordered quadruple perovskite to be reported. We demonstrate that long range magnetic order develops below 74 K, and at 28 K a spin-flop transition occurs driven by $f$-$d$ exchange and rare earth single ion anisotropy. In both magnetic phases the magnetic structure may be described as a collinear ferrimagnet, contrary to conventional theories of magnetic order in the manganite perovskites. Instead, we show that these magnetic structu…
Quantum magnetic properties in a geometrically frustrated lattice of spin-1/2 magnet, such as quantum spin liquid or solid and the associated spin fractionalization, are considered key in developing a new phase of matter. The feasibility of observing the quantum magnetic properties, usually found in geometrically frustrated lattice of spin-1/2 magnet, in a perovskite material with controlled disorder is demonstrated. It is found that the controlled chemical disorder, due to the chemical substitution of Ru ions by Co-ions, in a simple perovskite CaRuO3 creates a random prototype configuration o…
First-principles calculations reveal large zone-center spin-phonon coupling and magnetically-driven phonon anisotropy in cubic perovskites Sr$M$O$_3$ ($M$=V,Cr,Mn,Fe,Co). In particular, the frequency and splitting of the polar Slater mode is found to depend strongly on magnetic ordering. The coupling is parameterized in a crystal-structure-dependent Heisenberg model and its main features seen to arise from the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. This coupling can be expected to produce distinct low-energy alternative phases, resulting in a rich variety of coupled magnetic, structural and electronic pha…
Muon spin relaxation measurements are reported on samples of dimethylammonium metal formates containing magnetic divalent nickel, cobalt, manganese, and copper ions. These hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites exhibit weak ferromagnetism and are, apart from the copper system, multiferroics with well separated magnetic and antiferroelectric transitions. We use muons to follow the sublattice magnetization, observing the effect of the spin reorientation transitions below TN and the criticality approaching TN. The multiferroic samples have three-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions, but the c…
We consider a model of the double perovskite Ba2FeReO6, a room temperature ferrimagnet with correlated and spin-orbit coupled Re t2g electrons moving in the background of Fe moments stabilized by Hund's coupling. We show that for such 3d/5d double perovskites, strong correlations on the 5d-element (Re) are essential in driving a half-metallic ground state. Incorporating both strong spin-orbit coupling and the Hubbard repulsion on Re leads to a band structure consistent with ab initio calculations. Using our model, we find a large spin polarization at the Fermi level, and obtain a semi-quantita…
The double perovskite ${\rm La}_2{\rm NiTiO}_6$ is identified as a three-dimensional $S=1$ quantum magnet. By means of Density Functional Theory we demonstrate that this material is a high-spin $d$-electron system deep in the Heisenberg limit and establish that its paramagnetic Mott phase persists down to low temperatures ($T_{\rm N}$=25K) not because of frustration effects but rather for the extreme strong coupling physics. Our many-body calculations on an $ab$ $initio$-derived multi-orbital basis predict indeed a kinetic energy gain when entering the magnetically ordered phase. ${\rm La}_2{\…
We develop anisotropic pseudo-spin antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models for monoclinically distorted double perovskites. We focus on these A$_2$BB'O$_6$ materials that have magnetic moments on the 4d or 5d transition metal B' ions, which form a face-centered cubic lattice. In these models, we consider local z-axis distortion of B'-O octahedra, affecting relative occupancy of $t_{2g}$ orbitals, along with geometric effects of the monoclinic distortion, and spin-orbit coupling. The resulting pseudo-spin-1/2 models are solved in the saddle-point limit of the Sp(N) generalization of the Heisenberg …
We investigate the electronic structure of SrRuO3 and CaRuO3 using full potential linearized augmented plane wave method within the local spin density approximations. The ferromagnetic ground state in SrRuO3 could exactly be described in these calculations and the calculated spin magnetic moment is found to be close to the experimentally observed values. Interestingly, the spin polarized calculations for CaRuO3 exhibit large spin moment as observed in the experiments but the magnetic ground state has higher energy than that in the non-magnetic solution. Various calculations for different struc…
The electronic properties of Mott insulators realized in (111) bilayers of perovskite transition-metal oxides are studied. The low-energy effective Hamiltonians for such Mott insulators are derived in the presence of a strong spin-orbit coupling. These models are characterized by the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction and the anisotropic interaction whose form depends on the $d$ orbital occupancy. From exact diagonalization analyses on finite clusters, the ground state phase diagrams are derived, including a Kitaev spin liquid phase in a narrow parameter regime for $t_{2g}$ systems. Slav…
We investigate the effects of compressive strain on the electrical resistivity of 5d iridium based perovskite SrIrO3 by depositing epitaxial films of thickness 35 nm on various substrates such as GdScO3 (110), DyScO3 (110), and SrTiO3 (001). Surprisingly, we find anomalous transport behaviors in the tempeature dependent resistivity, where the temperature exponent evolves continuously from 4/5 to 1 and to 3/2 with an increase of compressive strain. Furthermore, magnetoresistance always remains positive irrespective of resistivity upturns at low temperatures. These observations imply that the de…
We present a microscopic theory of carrier-induced ferrimagnetism in metallic double perovskite compounds such as ${\rm Sr}_{2}{\rm FeMoO}_{6}$ and ${\rm Sr}_{2}{\rm FeReO}_{6}$ which have recently attracted intense interest for their possible applications to magnetotransport devices. The theory is based on an effective "Kondo-like" Hamiltonian treated here within the large-$S$ expansion. We find that depending on the value of the carrier density the ground state is either a ferrimagnet or a layered antiferromagnet. The ferrimagnetic state has a robust half-metallic electronic structure. The t…
A-site ordered perovskites, CaCu$_3$B$_4$O$_{12}$, which are derivatives of conventional ABO$_3$ perovskites, exhibit varying electronic and magnetic properties. With the objective of examining the role of Cu in this work, we have studied CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ and CaCu$_3$Zr$_4$O$_{12}$ and presented the cause of the crystallization of A-site ordered perovskite from conventional ABO$_3$ perovskite and the underlying mechanism leading to the stabilization of non-trivial and experimentally estabilished G-type antiferromagnetic (G-AFM) ordering in these systems. The first-principles electronic s…
We study magnetism on the fcc lattice with tetragonal distortions, with general exotic directional magnetic interactions allowed by symmetry. We consider two models, corresponding to a uniform tetragonal distortion, or a two-sublattice model with a tetragonal screw axis. We establish their low temperature phase diagrams in the semi-classical limit using classical optimization and consideration of fluctuations both analytically and by Monte Carlo simulation. Both order by disorder and exchange anisotropy mechanisms favor a $\langle 110\rangle$ easy axis for magnetization. We also show that spin…

Inelastic neutron-scattering measurements were performed on a single crystal of the layered colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) material La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 (Tc ~ 120K). We found that the spin wave dispersion is almost perfectly two-dimensional with the in-plane spin stiffness constant D ~ 151meVA. The value is similar to that of similarly doped La1-xSrxMnO3 though its Tc is three times higher, indicating a large renormalization due to low dimensionality. There exist two branches due to a coupling between layers within a double-layer. The out-of-plane coupling is about 30% of the in-plane coupling th…
Through a combination of neutron diffraction and Landau theory we describe the spin ordering in the ground state of the quadruple perovskite manganite CaMn7O12 - a magnetic multiferroic supporting an incommensurate orbital density wave that onsets above the magnetic ordering temperature, TN1 = 90 K. The multi-k magnetic structure in the ground state was found to be a nearly-constant-moment helix with modulated spin helicity, which oscillates in phase with the orbital occupancies on the Mn3+ sites via trilinear magneto-orbital coupling. Our phenomenological model also shows that, above TN2 = 48…
Properties and mechanism of the magnetic phase transition of the perovskite-type Ti oxides, which is driven by the Ti-O-Ti bond angle distortion, are studied theoretically by using the effective spin and pseudo-spin Hamiltonian with strong Coulomb repulsion. It is shown that the A-type antiferromagnetic(AFM(A)) to ferromagnetic(FM) phase transition occurs as the Ti-O-Ti bond angle is decreased. Through this phase transition, the orbital state is hardly changed so that the spin-exchange coupling along the c-axis changes nearly continuously from positive to negative and takes approximately zero …
Inelastic neutron scattering was used to systematically investigate the spin-wave excitations (magnons) in ferromagnetic manganese perovskites. In spite of the large differences in the Curie temperatures ($T_C$s) of different manganites, their low-temperature spin waves were found to have very similar dispersions with the zone boundary magnon softening. From the wavevector dependence of the magnon lifetime effects and its correlation with the dispersions of the optical phonon modes, we argue that a strong magneto-elastic coupling is responsible for the observed low temperature anomalous spin d…
We formulate a superexchange theory of insulating double-perovskite compounds such as Sr$_2$FeWO$_6$. An effective spin-orbital Hamiltonian is derived in the strong coupling limit of Hubbard model for d-electrons on Fe and W ions. The relevant degrees of freedom are the spins S=2 and the three-fold orbital degeneracy of Fe$^{2+}$-ions. W-sites are integrated out by means of a fourth-order perturbative expansion. The magnetically and orbitally ordered ground states of the effective Hamiltonia n are discussed as a function of the model parameters. We show that for realistic values of such parame…
We explore the relative strengths of spin orbit coupling and crystal field splitting in the Ir5+ compounds Ba2-xSrxYIrO6. In the case of strong spin orbit coupling and regular Ir5+ octahedra, one expects a nonmagnetic J = 0 state; in the case of distorted octahedra where crystal field effects dominate, the t2g manifold splits into a magnetic ground state. We report the results of continuously transitioning from the cubic Ba2YIrO6 double perovskite with ideal octahedra to the monoclinic Sr2YIrO6 double perovskite with distorted octahedra. We see no emergence of an enhanced Ir5+ magnetic moment …
A fully ab initio scheme based on quantum chemical wavefunction methods is used to investigate the correlated multiorbital electronic structure of a 3d-metal compound, LaCoO3. The strong short-range electron correlations, involving both Co and O orbitals, are treated by multireference techniques. The use of effective parameters like the Hubbard U and interorbital U', J terms and the problems associated with their explicit calculation are avoided with this approach. We provide new insight into the spin-state transition at about 90 K and the nature of charge carriers in the doped material. Our r…
We have performed magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation experiments to investigate the magnetic ground states of the 5$d^2$ double perovskites Sr$_2$YReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$InReO$_6$. We find that Sr$_2$YReO$_6$ is a spin glass, while Sr$_2$InReO$_6$ hosts a non-magnetic singlet state. By making detailed comparisons with other 5$d^2$ double perovskites, we argue that a delicate interplay between spin-orbit coupling, non-cubic crystal fields, and exchange interactions plays a key role in the great variation of magnetic ground states observed for…
Spin-reorientation phase transitions that involve the rotation of a crystal$'$s magnetization have been well characterized in distorted-perovskite oxides such as the orthoferrites. In these systems spin reorientation occurs due to competing rare-earth and transition metal anisotropies coupled via $f$-$d$ exchange. Here, we demonstrate an alternative paradigm for spin reorientation in distorted perovskites. We show that the $R_2\mathrm{CuMnMn_4O_{12}}$ (R = Y or Dy) triple A-site columnar-ordered quadruple perovskites have three ordered magnetic phases and up to two spin-reorientation phase tra…
Layered oxide heterostructures are the new routes to tailor desired electronic and magnetic phases emerging from competing interactions involving strong correlation, orbital hopping, tunnelling and lattice coupling phenomena. Here, we propose a half-metal/insulator superlattice that intrinsically forms spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) following a mechanism very different from the widely reported 2DEG at the single perovskite polar interfaces. From DFT$+U$ study on Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$/La$_2$CoMnO$_6$ (001) superlattice, we find that a periodic quantum well is created along [001] w…
We report the structural transformation of hexagonal Ba3YIr2O9 to a cubic double perovskite form (stable in ambient conditions) under an applied pressure of 8GPa at 1273K. While the ambient pressure (AP) synthesized sample undergoes long-range magnetic ordering at 4K, the high pressure(HP) synthesized sample does not order down to 2K as evidenced from our susceptibility, heat capacity and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Further, for the HP sample, our heat capacity data have the form gamma*T+beta*T3 in the temperature (T) range of 2-10K with the Sommerfeld coefficient gamma=10mJ…
The spin order in cubic perovskite SrFeO3 and BaFeO3 under high pressure is studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculation with local spin density approximation plus Hubbard U (LSDA+U). At ambient pressure, A-type and G-type helical spin orders are almost degenerate in BaFeO3 whose lattice constant is 3.97Å . When the lattice constant is reduced to 3.85 Å which is same as the lattice constant of SrFeO3 at ambient pressure, G-type helical spin order becomes stable, being consistent with SrFeO3. This is because superexchange interaction is enhanced as compared with double exchange intera…
We consider strongly spin-orbit coupled double perovskites A$_2$BB'O$_6$ with B' magnetic ions in either $d^1$ or $d^2$ electronic configuration and non-magnetic B ions. We provide insights into several experimental puzzles, such as the predominance of ferromagnetism in $d^1$ versus antiferromagnetism in $d^2$ systems, the appearance of negative Curie-Weiss temperatures for ferromagnetic materials, and the size of effective magnetic moments. We develop and solve a microscopic model with both spin and orbital degrees of freedom within the Mott insulating regime at finite temperature using mean …
We use the LDA+U method to study the possibility of exciton condensation in perovskites of transition metals with $d^6$ electronic configuration such as LaCoO$_3$. For realistic interaction parameters we find several distinct solutions exhibiting spin-triplet exciton condensate, which gives rise to a local spin density distribution while the ordered moments are vanishingly small. Rhombohedral distortion from the ideal cubic structure suppresses the ordered state, contrary to the spin-orbit coupling which enhances the excitonic condensation energy. We explain the trends observed in the numerica…
High formal valence Os-based double perovskites are a focus of current interest because they display strong interplay of large spin orbit coupling and strong electronic correlation. Here we present the electronic and magnetic characteristics of a sequence of three cubic Os based double perovskites Ba$_{2}$$A$OsO$_{6}$, ($A=$Na, Ca, Y), with formal valences (charge states) of Os$^{+7}~(d^{1})$, Os$^{+6}(d^{2})$, Os$^{+5}(d^{3})$. For these first principles based calculations we apply an ``exact exchange for correlated electrons'' functional, with exact exchange applied in a hybrid fashion solel…
We present first principles LDA+U calculations of electronic structure and magnetic state for LaCoO3 and HoCoO3. Low Spin to Intermediate Spin state transition was found in our calculations using experimental crystallographic data for both materials with a much higher transition temperature for HoCoO3, which agrees well with the experimental estimations. Low Spin state t6e0 (non-magnetic) to Intermediate Spin state t5e1 (magnetic) transition of Co(3+) ions happens due to the competition between crystal field t_2g-e_g splitting and effective exchange interaction between 3$d$ spin-orbitals. We s…
We report on the unconventional magnetism in the cubic B-site ordered double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, using AC and DC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and muSR. No magnetic order is observed down to 2 K while the Weiss temperature is ~ -160 K. This is ascribed to the geometric frustration in the lattice of edge-sharing tetrahedra with orbitally degenerate Mo5+ s=1/2 spins. Our experimental results point to a gradual freezing of the spins into a disordered pattern of spin-singlets, quenching the orbital degeneracy while leaving the global cubic symmetry unaffected, and providing a rare exampl…
The perovskite-type iron oxide Sr$_{2/3}$La$_{1/3}$FeO$_3$ is known to show characteristic spin-charge ordering (SCO), where sixfold collinear spin ordering and threefold charge ordering are coupled with each other. Here, we report the discovery of a spin-charge decoupling and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state competing with the SCO phase in perovskites (Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$)$_{2/3}$La$_{1/3}$FeO$_3$. By comprehensive measurements including neutron diffraction, M$ö$ssbauer spectroscopy, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we found that the isovalent Ba$^{2+}$ substitution systematically reduces the …
We have performed dielectric measurements and neutron diffraction experiments on the double perovskite In2NiMnO6. A ferroelectric polarization, P ~ 30 μC/m2, is observed in a polycrystalline sample below TN = 26 K where a magnetic phase ransition occurs. The neutron diffraction experiment demonstrates that a complex noncollinear magnetic structure with "cycloidal" and "proper screw" components appears below TN, which has the incommensurate propagation vector k = (ka,0,ks; ka ~ 0.274, ks ~ -0.0893). The established magnetic point group 21' implies that the macroscopic ferroelectric polarization…
The magnetic properties of polycrystaline La0.5Ba0.5CoO2.5+d (d = 0.44 and 0.485) where investigated using muon spin relaxation and bulk magnetization experiments. Below a Curie temperature of T_C = 160 K and 180 K, respectively, a magnetic phase with a macroscopic ferromagnetic moment forms. muSR proves that the full volume inhomogeneously orders at T_C but that there is microscopically a phase separation into phase volumes possessing a fully static and a slow magnetic dynamic behavior. A peak in the dynamic relaxation rate 35 K respectively 55 K below the Curie temperature indicates the free…
We construct an effective spin model from the coupled spin-fermion problem appropriate to double perovskites of the form A_2BB'O_6. The magnetic model that emerges is reminiscent of double exchange and we illustrate this `reduction' in detail for the case of perfect B-B' structural order, i.e, no antisite disorder. We estimate the effective exchange between the magnetic B ions in terms of the electronic parameters, study the `classical' magnetic model using Monte Carlo techniques, and compare this approach to a full numerical solution of the spin-fermion problem. The agreement is reasonable, a…
The quantum spin continuum and classical spin freezing, associated with a glassy state, represent two opposite extremes of a correlated electronic material. Here, we report the coexistence of a quantum spin continuum with a weak spin glass order in Co-doped CaRuO$_{3}$ perovskite near the chemical doping dependent metal-insulator transition boundary. Inelastic neutron measurements on Ca(Co$_{0.15}$Ru$_{0.85}$)O$_{3}$ at low temperature, $T$ = 1.5 K, reveal a continuum spectrum in the $Q-E$ space due to uncorrelated spin fluctuations. This persists across the glass transition at $T_G \simeq$23 …
We present the self-interaction corrected local spin density (SIC-LSD) electronic structure and total energy calculations, leading also to valencies of the ground state configurations, for the half-metallic double perovskites such as Sr$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$, Ba$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$, Ca$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$, and Ca$_{2}$FeReO$_{6}$. We conclude that the Fe and Mo (or Re) spin magnetic moments are anti-parallel aligned, and the magnitude of the hybridization induced moment on Mo does not vary much between the different compounds. The hybridization spin magnetic moment on Re is of the order of -1.1 $μ_{B}$, …
We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations …
We formulate a theory of double perovskite coumpounds such as Sr$_2$FeReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ which have attracted recent attention for their possible uses as spin valves and sources of spin polarized electrons. We solve the theory in the dynamical mean field approximation to find the magnetic transition temperature $T_c$. We find that $T_c$ is determined by a subtle interplay between carrier density and the Fe-Mo/Re site energy difference, and that the non-Fe same-sublattice hopping acts to reduce $T_c$. Our results suggest that presently existing materials do not optimize $T_c$.
Hole dynamics in spin and orbital ordered vanadates with perovskite structure is investigated. A mobile hole coupled to the spin excitation (magnon) in the spin G-type and orbital C-type (SG/OC) ordered phase, and that to the orbital excitation (orbiton) in the spin C-type and orbital G-type (SC/OG) one are formulated on an equal footing. The observed fragile character of the (SG/OC) order is attributed to the orbiton softening caused by a reduction of the taggered magnetic order parameter. It is proposed that the qualitatively different hole dynamics in the two spin-orbital ordered phases in …
We report on a Ni L$_{2,3}$ edges x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites. These compounds exhibit a metal to insulator ($MI$) transition as temperature decreases. The L$_{3}$ edge presents a clear splitting in the insulating state, associated to a less hybridized ground state. Using charge transfer multiplet calculations, we establish the importance of the crystal field and 3d spin-orbit coupling to create a mixed-spin ground state. We explain the $MI$ transition in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites in terms of modifications in the Ni$^{3+}$ crystal field splitting that induc…
Nontrivial magnetic orders in the inverse-perovskite manganese nitrides are theoretically studied by constructing a classical spin model describing the magnetic anisotropy and frustrated exchange interactions inherent in specific crystal and electronic structures of these materials. With a replica-exchange Monte-Carlo technique, a theoretical analysis of this model reproduces the experimentally observed triangular Γ^{5g} and Γ^{4g} spin ordered patterns and the systematic evolution of magnetic orders. Our work solves a 40-year-old problem of nontrivial magnetism for the inverse-perovskite mang…
